Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMost classic SingStar microphones do not need a special PC driver. Connect the original USB converter—or the matching receiver for a wireless model—to your computer, let the operating system detect it as a USB audio device, then select and configure it in karaoke software.
The important distinction is that “installing” a SingStar microphone usually means connecting and configuring hardware. It does not install the original SingStar game. For a computer-native karaoke experience, UltraStar Deluxe is generally the simplest option. If you want to run the original PlayStation game, PCSX2 is a separate and more complicated project.

First, identify your SingStar microphone
The setup depends on which hardware you own:
- Wired PS2/PS3 microphones: two microphones connect to the original SingStar USB converter. This is the common setup covered by Sony’s SingStar Microphone Pack manual.
- Wireless PS3 microphones: these require their matching USB receiver. The receiver is not interchangeable with the wired converter.
- Third-party SingStar-compatible microphones: compatibility varies. Check the exact model and confirm that it includes the required USB adapter or receiver.
Sony’s documentation describes the original hardware for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, not as a current officially supported PC accessory. Computer use is therefore practical, community-supported use rather than a documented Sony PC installation path.

Do not download random “SingStar drivers” from unofficial driver websites. If the device is missing from your computer’s audio settings, the more likely causes are a faulty converter or receiver, a damaged cable, an unsuitable USB port, missing microphone permissions, or incompatible third-party hardware.
Connect the wired microphones
- Plug the blue microphone into the blue socket on the converter.
- Plug the red microphone into the red socket.
- Push each plug in firmly until it clicks.
- Connect the converter’s USB plug directly to the computer.
- Wait for the operating system to install its generic audio-device support.
Use a direct USB port rather than a hub while testing. A powered hub may work later, but removing the hub makes it easier to diagnose power and connection problems. The manual’s blue status light is documented for PlayStation use; do not treat its behavior as proof that PC software has configured the device correctly.
For a wireless set, connect only the receiver that belongs to the microphones. If the receiver is missing or belongs to another set, the microphones may not work even if the receiver itself appears in the computer.
Check detection in Windows
On current Windows versions, open Settings → System → Sound and look under Input. You can also open More sound settings → Recording, or use the classic path Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Sound → Recording. Labels vary by Windows edition and by converter.
The most reliable way to identify the device is to open the recording-device list, unplug the converter or receiver, and plug it back in. The entry that disappears and reappears is the relevant input.
Select it and speak into each microphone. The input-level meter should respond. Test the microphones separately:
- Speak into the blue microphone and note whether one channel responds.
- Speak into the red microphone and check the other channel.
- Record a short sample in a basic audio recorder if you need to confirm the result.
A successful test produces input from both microphones and allows you to distinguish their channels. If both microphones produce the same signal, either Windows or the application may be treating the stereo input as mono.
Configure both microphones as stereo input
The original two-microphone converter commonly exposes the microphones as one stereo audio device, not as two independent USB microphones. One microphone occupies the left channel and the other occupies the right channel. Which color becomes Player 1 is determined by the software’s channel assignment, so do not assume that one color is permanently Player 1.

For UltraStar Deluxe on Windows, its documentation recommends starting with a two-channel, 44,100 Hz format when using both microphones. This is a recommended UltraStar configuration, not a universal requirement for every application.
- Open the recording device’s properties.
- Choose Properties → Advanced.
- Select a format with 2 channels, if available.
- Start with 44,100 Hz or CD Quality.
- Apply the change and test both microphones again.
- Close and relaunch the karaoke program.
Menu wording can differ between Windows versions and audio drivers. If the device offers only mono formats, the converter, driver, or application may not support the two-channel arrangement correctly.
Use the microphones with UltraStar Deluxe
UltraStar Deluxe is a free, open-source karaoke game inspired by SingStar, with releases for Windows, Linux, and macOS. It is not the original SingStar software, but it is usually the most straightforward way to use SingStar microphones on a computer.
Recommended Free Tools
- Download the current release shown on the official UltraStar Deluxe downloads page.
- Connect the SingStar converter or wireless receiver before launching the game.
- Open UltraStar Deluxe’s microphone or recording settings.
- Select the SingStar or USB stereo recording device.
- Assign the left channel to one player and the right channel to the other.
- Adjust microphone volume and test both players.
- Use the microphone-delay or calibration control if scoring appears out of sync with the music.
If you connect the microphone after starting the game, UltraStar may not see it until you restart the program. Also remember that UltraStar Deluxe and UltraStar Play are related but distinct projects. Their recording menus and channel-routing controls should not be assumed to be identical.
UltraStar Deluxe does not automatically provide commercial song content. Song files and their organization are a separate matter from installing the microphone.
macOS and Linux
macOS
Open System Settings → Sound → Input and select the converter or receiver if it appears. Also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and grant the karaoke application permission to use audio input. Select the device inside UltraStar and restart the application after changing permissions or connecting the hardware.
If you are using two unrelated USB microphones rather than the original stereo converter, macOS software may require an aggregate or combined audio device. That is not normally necessary for the original SingStar converter.

Replace the filename with the actual downloaded application name. This command applies to the UltraStar Play application, not to the microphone. Use it only when necessary; do not disable Gatekeeper globally.
Linux
Check the input device in your desktop’s sound settings or audio mixer. Confirm that the converter or receiver appears at the operating-system level before troubleshooting UltraStar. Then select it in the game’s recording settings and verify the left and right channels separately.
UltraStar Deluxe documents Windows, Linux, and macOS support, although menu names and the level of platform-specific documentation vary.
Can you use a SingStar microphone with PCSX2?
Possibly, but connecting the microphone is not enough to make the original SingStar game work correctly. PCSX2 requires legally obtained PlayStation software and BIOS files, plus emulator, controller, graphics, and audio configuration.
There is also an important two-player limitation. Community reports indicate that PCSX2 may detect the stereo USB device but expose the same device to both players without independently routing the left and right channels. In that situation, both player inputs can respond to the same microphone.
If your goal is original SingStar emulation, test your exact PCSX2 version and configuration before buying replacement hardware. Hardware detection and correct two-player channel separation are separate problems. For ordinary computer karaoke, UltraStar Deluxe is the less complicated route.

The computer does not detect the microphone
- Disconnect and reconnect the converter or receiver.
- Try another direct USB port.
- Remove any hub or extension from the setup.
- Check whether a new recording device appears in Windows Sound settings.
- Test the hardware on another computer if possible.
- For wireless microphones, confirm that the receiver belongs to the set.
If no computer detects the hardware, suspect the converter, receiver, cable, or USB connection. If the device works elsewhere but not on one computer, check operating-system permissions and audio-device settings.
Only one microphone works
First, recheck the colored plugs and make sure both have clicked into place. Then confirm that both microphones produce input in an audio recorder. If they do, set the device to two-channel stereo and assign the channels separately in the karaoke software. Restart the application after changing the device format.

If the application has no left/right channel controls, it may support only separate microphone devices or only one channel of a stereo input. Try another karaoke program or use two PC-compatible USB microphones.
Both players respond to the same microphone
This usually indicates incorrect channel routing in the application or an emulator that cannot expose the converter’s left and right channels independently. Recheck the player assignments in UltraStar. With PCSX2, the limitation may be inherent to the current emulator configuration rather than a faulty microphone.
The microphone works in Windows but not in the game
- Connect it before launching the game.
- Select the device explicitly in the game’s recording settings.
- Confirm the left/right channel assignments.
- Grant microphone permission to the application.
- Raise the input level and temporarily disable audio enhancements.
- Restart the game after changing any audio setting.
Testing the device in UltraStar Deluxe can help establish whether the fault is hardware-wide or limited to a particular game or emulator.
The microphone is too quiet
Raise the Windows input level and the application’s microphone gain if available. Hold the microphone approximately 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) from your mouth, as Sony’s original instructions recommend, and sing toward the microphone head. Check for a microphone-boost option if the input remains low.
There is delay, echo, or feedback
For delayed scoring, use wired microphones where possible, enable your display’s game mode, calibrate microphone delay in the karaoke software, and use wired headphones or speakers. TVs and monitors can add processing delay when picture enhancements are enabled; UltraStar’s documentation recommends game mode and disabling unnecessary display processing.
For feedback, move away from speakers, disable “Listen to this device” or input monitoring, reduce gain, and use headphones. Keep the microphone pointed away from speakers.
When replacement hardware makes more sense
If the original converter is missing or defective, you can consider a dual USB karaoke microphone set explicitly marketed for PC use, such as the Pyle PGMM9. Do not assume that a product listing mentioning SingStar will guarantee compatibility with every karaoke application or emulator.

- whether the required wired converter or wireless receiver is included;
- whether the device exposes two-channel stereo input or two separate USB devices;
- whether Windows, macOS, or Linux compatibility is explicitly documented;
- the condition of cables, plugs, and receivers;
- the seller’s return policy.
Generic PC-compatible microphones may be easier to configure, but they may not reproduce the original SingStar two-player stereo arrangement.
