The installation method depends on your edition. Minecraft Java Edition uses mod loaders such as Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt and usually loads .jar files. Minecraft Bedrock Edition uses add-ons, resource packs, and behavior packs instead. Do not download Java mods until you have confirmed which edition you own.
First, check whether you have Java or Bedrock
Open Minecraft and check the title screen:
- Java Edition: the title identifies itself as Minecraft: Java Edition. This is the version used by the traditional PC modding ecosystem.
- Bedrock Edition: the title generally says Minecraft and includes features such as the Marketplace. Windows players may have access to both editions through the Minecraft Launcher.
Java and Bedrock remain separate modding environments. A Java .jar file cannot be installed as a Bedrock add-on, and a Bedrock add-on cannot be loaded by a Java mod loader. Console and mobile players generally use Marketplace content or platform-supported Bedrock add-ons rather than manually copying Java mod files.

The quickest way to install Java mods
For most beginners, a launcher or mod manager is easier than manually maintaining files. Choose the tool based on where your mod or modpack is hosted:
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- CurseForge App: a guided option for Java profiles and modpacks hosted on CurseForge. It supports vanilla profiles and loaders including Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt. It normally keeps modded profiles in a dedicated modding folder.
- Modrinth App: an open-source launcher for Modrinth mods and modpacks, with profiles, updates, and offline play. Its official page currently describes it as a public beta; it is not a Mojang or Microsoft service.
- Prism Launcher: an instance-focused launcher whose documentation describes downloading content from both Modrinth and CurseForge. It offers excellent profile isolation but exposes more settings than the most beginner-oriented apps.
Menu names can change between app versions, but the basic process is the same:
- Create a new profile or instance.
- Select the exact Minecraft version.
- Select the loader required by the mod or modpack.
- Open the profile’s mod browser or content-management screen.
- Install compatible mods, dependencies, or the complete modpack.
- Launch that profile, not the ordinary vanilla Minecraft profile.
Use the CurseForge getting-started guide, Modrinth App page, or Prism Launcher mod guide for the current interface.
What is a Minecraft mod loader?
A mod loader is the software layer that enables Java Edition to load mods. The loader must match the mod:
- Fabric: common for performance, quality-of-life, and lightweight mods. Most Fabric mods require Fabric API or another listed dependency, although not every Fabric mod does.
- Forge: widely used by many established mods and modpacks.
- NeoForge: a separate loader used by some newer content-heavy projects and modpacks.
- Quilt: another Java loader with its own compatibility requirements.
There is no universally best loader. The project’s download page or modpack profile should determine your choice. A Fabric file is not automatically compatible with Forge or NeoForge just because both target the same Minecraft release.

How to install one Java mod manually
Fabric is a useful example because its player documentation clearly describes the process. Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt follow the same broad pattern, but you must install their own loader and use mods built for that loader.
Before you begin
- Install and launch Minecraft Java Edition at least once.
- Choose the exact Minecraft release you want to mod.
- Check whether the mod supports that release and Fabric.
- Check the required dependencies, including Fabric API where listed.
- Download from the project’s official page or an established repository such as Modrinth or CurseForge.
Fabric installation steps
- Download and install Fabric Loader for your chosen Minecraft version. The Fabric installer may use the Java runtime bundled with the official launcher, depending on your system and setup.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select the Fabric installation.
- Launch it once, wait for the title screen, then close Minecraft. This creates the relevant folders.
- Download the mod’s
.jarfile and every dependency listed on its project page. - Open the game directory used by that profile.
- Open or create the
modsfolder. - Copy the compatible
.jarfiles into that folder. Do not unzip a mod unless its author specifically tells you to. - Launch the Fabric profile again and confirm that Minecraft reaches the title screen.
Default Fabric paths are:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%.minecraftmods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
These paths may not apply to CurseForge, Modrinth, Prism, or another launcher using an isolated instance. Always use the game directory shown by that launcher. Fabric’s current player instructions are available in its mod-installation guide.
How to install a modpack
A modpack is a curated collection that can include mods, configuration files, resource packs, and carefully selected versions. Installing it as a separate profile is safer and easier than mixing its files into an unrelated installation.
- Open CurseForge, Modrinth App, or Prism Launcher.
- Choose the modpack from the relevant catalog or import its supported file.
- Check its Minecraft version and loader.
- Select Install or the equivalent command.
- Let the launcher install the listed dependencies and configuration.
- Launch the new profile from the launcher’s modpack or instance list.
Do not casually add individual mods to a modpack. Extra files can cause crashes, broken recipes, world-generation problems, or balance changes. Make a copy of an existing world before testing a pack.

How to install Bedrock add-ons
Bedrock uses add-ons rather than Java loader-based .jar mods. Add-ons can include resource packs and behavior packs that add or change blocks, items, mobs, recipes, and other content.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Activate an add-on in a new world
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Select Create New World.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Find the add-on under Available.
- Select Activate.
- Create the world.
Activate an add-on in an existing world
- Select Play.
- Select the pencil or edit icon beside the world.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Activate the add-on, then load the world.
Marketplace add-ons are obtained through the supported Bedrock Marketplace. Third-party files such as .mcpack, .mcaddon, and .mcworld generally open through Minecraft when imported, after which the pack or world appears in the relevant menus. Use extra caution with downloads from unknown sites. Microsoft’s Bedrock add-on documentation and Minecraft Help instructions cover the supported workflow.
Compatibility checklist
Before installing a Java mod, verify every item:
- Edition: Java Edition, not Bedrock.
- Exact Minecraft release: do not rely on a broad label such as “1.21” if the project specifies a particular release.
- Loader: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt.
- Dependencies: APIs and libraries named by the project.
- Side: client-side, server-side, or both.
- Environment: single-player, multiplayer client, or dedicated server.
- Java runtime: use the launcher’s bundled runtime or the version documented by the loader or modpack when possible.
- File type: Java mods are usually
.jarfiles. Do not run them by double-clicking. - Source: use the project page or a recognized repository, not a random mirror.
Established repositories provide creator pages, moderation, and compatibility metadata, but no repository makes every download risk-free. Avoid suspicious installers, executable files disguised as mods, and pages that pressure you into unrelated downloads.

Mods, shaders, resource packs, and data packs are different
These categories use different installation locations and may require different tools:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Mods: Java code loaded through a compatible mod loader.
- Resource packs: change textures, sounds, fonts, or models.
- Shaders: change rendering and may require a compatible shader system or mod.
- Data packs: change supported game data and mechanics, generally within a world’s data-pack settings.
- Plugins: usually run on particular server platforms and are not interchangeable with client mods.
- Bedrock add-ons: use Bedrock resource and behavior packs.
A shader pack should not automatically be placed in the mods folder.
Why Minecraft mods crash—and how to recover
The game crashes immediately
- Remove the most recently added mod.
- Launch the same profile again.
- If it works, check the removed mod’s Minecraft version, loader, dependencies, and required Java version.
- Add compatible mods back one at a time.
- Read
latest.logor the crash report and search the exact error on the project’s issue tracker or support channel.
“Incompatible mod set” or loader errors
- Confirm that every file targets the same loader.
- Remove Forge files from a Fabric profile, or the reverse.
- Confirm the exact Minecraft release.
- Install the dependency named in the error.
- Do not substitute a similarly named library or API.
The mods folder is missing
Launch the selected loader profile once, close Minecraft, and open the actual game directory used by that profile. Create a folder named mods if the loader documentation calls for it. With a third-party launcher, use the instance folder rather than assuming it is .minecraft.
The game loads but the mod is absent
Check that you launched the modded profile, used the correct instance folder, kept the .jar extension, selected the right loader and Minecraft release, installed dependencies, and confirmed that the mod is intended for the client. Some launchers can also disable individual mods.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The launcher starts vanilla Minecraft
You probably selected the standard installation instead of the modded profile, or the launcher is pointing at a different game directory. Open the launcher’s profile or instance list and start the entry that names Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, or the modpack.
The profile runs poorly
Performance problems can come from a demanding mod, shaders, too many entities, a large modpack, or insufficient memory. Follow the modpack’s documented memory guidance rather than assigning all available RAM. More memory is not automatically better, and the correct amount depends on the pack, system, and launcher.
Multiplayer and existing worlds
A mod working in single-player does not guarantee that it will work on a server. Client-only mods may run only on your computer. Mods that add blocks, items, mobs, dimensions, or gameplay systems generally require matching installations on both the server and connecting clients.
For multiplayer, follow the server owner’s loader, Minecraft version, and modpack instructions exactly. A server may also use server-side plugins or mods that are not intended for a client installation.
Back up worlds before adding content or world-generation mods. If a world will not load after removing a mod, restore the backup and reinstall the removed mod or follow its documented removal procedure. Never remove a content mod from the only copy of an important world.

| Situation | Best route | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One or two Java mods | Manual loader and mods folder |
You must manage dependencies and file placement. |
| Beginner installing a modpack | CurseForge or Modrinth App | The experience is closely tied to that platform’s catalog. |
| Mods from both Modrinth and CurseForge | Prism Launcher | It offers more settings than a guided one-click app. |
| Several Minecraft versions | Separate launcher instances | Instances use more disk space but prevent version conflicts. |
| Bedrock Edition | Official add-ons or Marketplace content | Java .jar mods are not compatible. |
| Multiplayer server | The server’s exact loader and modpack | Client and server requirements must agree. |
You do not need to pay for a launcher to install Java mods. Minecraft itself requires a legitimate purchased account if you do not already own it. CurseForge Premium is an optional convenience subscription, not a compatibility fix or installation requirement. Bedrock Marketplace add-ons are a separate purchase category from Java mods.
Removing a mod safely
- Close Minecraft and the launcher.
- Back up the world and, if possible, the entire instance.
- Remove the mod from that profile’s mod list or
modsfolder. - Launch a test world first.
- Do not remove world-generation or content mods from an important world without checking the project’s instructions and keeping a backup.
The Bottom Line
The reliable rule is: identify Java or Bedrock first, match the exact Minecraft version and loader, install required dependencies, and keep every modded world in a backed-up, separate profile. Java uses loaders and .jar files; Bedrock uses add-ons.
