Discord works on the ASUS ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally, and ROG Xbox Ally X because each runs Windows. Install the official Windows desktop app from Discord’s download page, then configure your microphone and headphones in User Settings > Voice & Video.
The installation is essentially the same across Ally models, but Armoury Crate SE, Command Center, Xbox Game Bar, and button layouts can differ by model and software version. The touchscreen and Windows virtual keyboard are enough for basic setup; a keyboard or dock makes typing, invitations, and shortcuts easier.

What you need
- A Windows-based ROG Ally-family device
- An internet connection
- A Discord account, or an email address or phone number to create one
- Optional: wired, USB, or Bluetooth headphones
- Optional: a USB-C dock or keyboard
Before troubleshooting audio or overlays, install pending Windows, ASUS, Armoury Crate SE, and device-driver updates. Menu names can change with updates, so the exact screens may not be identical on every Ally.

Install Discord from the official website
- Open a browser from the Windows desktop or Start menu.
- Go to discord.com/download.
- Select Download for Windows.
- Open the downloaded
DiscordSetup.exe. - Follow the installer prompts and launch Discord.
- Sign in, or choose the option to create an account.
Use the official Discord download page rather than an unofficial mirror. The desktop app is the best choice for regular gaming because it supports desktop custom keybinds and Discord’s Windows Game Overlay. The browser version is a useful temporary fallback, but it does not provide the full desktop feature set.

Using Windows without a keyboard
Tap browser controls, installer buttons, and Discord menus on the Ally’s touchscreen. For typing, open the Windows virtual keyboard using the keyboard icon on the taskbar or through Command Center. If the current control profile makes desktop navigation awkward, switch Command Center to Desktop Mode.
A USB, Bluetooth, or dock-connected keyboard is particularly useful for entering account details, accepting server invitations, writing messages, and using Discord shortcuts. It is not required for installation.
Allow microphone access
Windows may ask whether Discord can use the microphone. Select Allow. If you missed the prompt, check Windows microphone privacy settings and make sure desktop applications are permitted to access the microphone.
Discord’s voice and video features also require a current client. Discord says that, beginning March 2, 2026, audio and video conversations require end-to-end-encryption-compatible clients, with a published minimum Windows desktop version of 1.0.9164. Do not manually install that exact version as though it were the latest release; keep Discord updated through the app instead. See Discord’s minimum voice-client requirements.
Configure the microphone and headphones
- Open Discord and select the gear icon beside your account name.
- Choose Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, select the microphone you want to use.
- Under Output Device, select where you want to hear Discord.
- Adjust input and output volume.
- Run Discord’s microphone test, if shown.
Possible input devices include the Ally’s built-in microphone, a wired headset microphone, a USB headset, or a Bluetooth headset. Possible outputs include the built-in speakers, the Ally’s 3.5-mm headset connection, USB audio, Bluetooth headphones, or another connected device.

Windows can change the active audio device when you connect a headset, Bluetooth headphones, a dock, an HDMI display, or another USB device. Recheck Discord’s input and output selections whenever you connect or disconnect hardware.
Voice Activity or Push to Talk?
Choose Voice Activity for the simplest handheld setup. Your microphone activates when Discord detects speech, so you do not need to hold a keyboard key while playing.

Join a server, text channel, and voice channel
To join a server, open an invitation link and accept the invitation. After joining, the server appears in Discord’s left sidebar.
- Select a server from the left sidebar.
- Select a text channel, usually marked with a hashtag.
- Tap the message box and open the Windows virtual keyboard.
- Type a message, then send it. You can also add reactions, images, and links.
Voice channels appear separately in the server’s channel list. Select a voice channel to join. Use the microphone button to mute yourself, the headphones button to deafen yourself, and the leave button to exit the channel. You can also adjust an individual participant’s volume from that person’s profile or context menu, subject to the server’s permissions.

The touchscreen is practical for scrolling, selecting channels, and opening menus. With a keyboard connected, Discord documents these useful desktop shortcuts:

Use Discord while playing a game
Discord can remain open in the background while you launch a game. For the most convenient in-game access, use Discord’s Windows Game Overlay:
- Open Discord User Settings.
- Open Game Overlay.
- Enable the overlay.
- Review or change the overlay keybind.
- Launch a compatible game.
- Use the configured shortcut to display Discord over the game.
Discord documents the default overlay shortcut as Shift + `. That shortcut assumes a keyboard, so it may be impractical on a handheld. Use an external keyboard or map an available control through the Ally’s supported control customisation options where appropriate. Button availability differs across Ally models; do not assume every unit has the same rear buttons or mapping behavior.
The overlay can provide access to voice, video, activity, streams, and notifications without changing windows. It is not guaranteed to work with every game. Fullscreen modes, anti-cheat systems, elevated permissions, other overlays, and game-specific compatibility can prevent it from appearing.

- Discord Game Overlay: Discord’s in-game interface for voice and other Discord features.
- ASUS Command Center: Ally controls such as performance profiles, brightness, volume, and control modes.
- Xbox Game Bar: Microsoft’s Windows gaming layer.
Opening Command Center or Xbox Game Bar does not open Discord’s overlay. If the overlay fails, switch between the game and Discord with Alt + Tab, Windows Task View, or a docked display and keyboard.
Add Discord to Armoury Crate SE
Adding Discord to Armoury Crate SE makes it easier to launch from ASUS’s game library, although the exact labels can vary:
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Open the Game Library management area.
- Choose Manage Library, then Add Game/App to Library.
- Browse to Discord and add it.
If desktop navigation is difficult, use the touchscreen or switch Command Center to Desktop Mode. ASUS documents manual application addition in its ROG Ally FAQ. Xbox Ally models may present a different ASUS or Microsoft interface.
Share your screen or stream
Join a voice channel or start a private call, then use Discord’s screen-share or Go Live control. Select the game or screen you want to share and confirm the stream.
Streaming adds workload to the game, Discord, and the network. Test in a private call or a small server before streaming publicly. If the stream is laggy, Discord recommends checking the connection, restarting Discord and Windows, updating Discord, and trying hardware acceleration off in Discord’s advanced settings. Windows permissions can also affect screen capture.

Streaming behavior depends on the game, network, power mode, and hardware load. Disabling hardware acceleration is a troubleshooting option, not a required Ally setting. On Windows N or KN editions, Discord says the Microsoft Media Feature Pack may improve video functionality; this is an edition-specific fix, not a normal prerequisite for most ROG Ally owners. Discord will not install
- Confirm you downloaded the installer from Discord’s official page.
- Close any existing Discord process and restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer and run it again.
- Use Discord in a browser temporarily if you need immediate access.
If the desktop installation remains broken, follow Discord’s installation guidance rather than downloading an unofficial build. A specific manual AppData deletion procedure is not necessary as a first step.
Discord cannot hear the microphone
- Check Windows microphone permissions.
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Select the intended input device.
- Make sure Input Mode is not accidentally set to Push to Talk.
- Check input volume and run the microphone test.
- Test the Ally’s built-in microphone, then a headset, to isolate the problem.
- Restart Discord after changing Windows audio devices.
- Update Windows, audio drivers, and ASUS device software.
Other people cannot hear you
Check that Discord is not muted, the headset has no physical mute switch enabled, and the server or channel permits you to speak. Select the correct input device, test the microphone in Windows, and try Voice Activity instead of Push to Talk. If the problem persists, use Discord’s Reset Voice and Video Settings option in the debugging area.
You cannot hear Discord
- Check Discord’s Output Device in User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Check the Windows volume mixer.
- Confirm the headset or Bluetooth connection.
- Make sure you are not deafened.
- Reconnect the device and restart Discord.
- If the Ally is docked, check that Windows has not switched output to HDMI or a monitor.
Bluetooth audio changes or sounds poor
Bluetooth headphones can expose separate playback and hands-free microphone profiles in Windows. Disconnect and reconnect the headset, then reselect both Discord input and output devices. If you need the simplest setup and lowest chance of device switching, a wired 3.5-mm or USB headset is usually easier.
The Game Overlay does not appear
- Confirm the overlay is enabled in Discord.
- Try the game in windowed or borderless-windowed mode; Discord specifically recommends these modes for overlay problems.
- Test another game, because support is not universal.
- Check whether the game and Discord are running with compatible permission levels.
- Use
Alt + Tabor Task View if the overlay remains unreliable.
Running Discord as administrator can be a troubleshooting option for some desktop problems, but it is not a universal fix.
Armoury Crate does not show Discord
Open Armoury Crate SE’s library-management area and use Add Game/App to Library to browse for Discord manually. Use Desktop Mode or the touchscreen if the default handheld control profile interferes with Windows navigation.
Command Center or Armoury Crate options are missing
First identify whether you have an original ROG Ally, Ally X, or Xbox Ally model; the interfaces differ. Install pending Windows and ASUS updates. If Desktop Mode or Armoury Crate functionality is broken, ASUS recommends reinstalling Armoury Crate SE from the product support site. Avoid treating a third-party Armoury Crate replacement as a required Discord fix, since it can affect ASUS controls and support.

- Use the official Discord desktop app for regular gaming.
- Choose Voice Activity unless you have a practical Push to Talk mapping.
- Use a wired headset for the simplest audio behavior.
- Use Bluetooth when convenience matters, but recheck devices after connections change.
- Use the virtual keyboard for occasional typing; add a compact keyboard or dock for frequent chat and shortcuts.
- Enable the Game Overlay, but keep window switching as the dependable fallback.
- Keep Discord, Windows, drivers, and ASUS software updated.
- Use the browser version temporarily if the desktop app or overlay is broken.
