The appointment replaced PlayStation’s short-lived parallel CEO arrangement. Hermen Hulst did not leave PlayStation: he remained CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group, reporting to Nishino.
The change was part of a wider Sony management transition, with Hiroki Totoki becoming president and CEO of Sony Group Corporation and Lin Tao moving from SIE to become Sony Group’s chief financial officer.

What Sony changed
The January announcement established a clearer hierarchy inside SIE:
| Executive | Role from April 1, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Hideaki Nishino | President and CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment |
| Hermen Hulst | CEO, Studio Business Group, reporting to Nishino |
| Hiroki Totoki | President and CEO, Sony Group Corporation |
| Lin Tao | Chief financial officer, Sony Group Corporation |
Sony’s official announcement described the move as an evolution of SIE’s leadership structure intended to maximize cooperation across the company. It did not identify a specific game, financial result, product decision, or crisis as the reason for the change.

How this differed from the 2024 two-CEO structure
In May 2024, Sony divided SIE into two business groups, effective June 1. Hideaki Nishino led the Platform Business Group, while Hermen Hulst led the Studio Business Group. Both were presented as CEOs of their respective groups and reported to Hiroki Totoki, who was then interim SIE CEO and later became SIE chairman.
Nishino’s group covered PlayStation’s technology, hardware, products, services, platform experience, third-party publisher and developer relations, and commercial operations. Hulst’s group covered first-party game development, publishing, studio operations, PC releases, and PlayStation Productions.
Under the arrangement that took effect on April 1, 2025, Nishino became the overall SIE president and CEO. Hulst continued leading the studio side, but his reporting line changed: he now reports to Nishino rather than sharing overall SIE CEO authority as a parallel leader.
Sony’s original explanation of the 2024 structure emphasized clearer responsibilities and cooperation between the platform and content businesses. The 2025 change preserved those specialized areas while placing one executive in charge of the entire PlayStation organization.
Who is Hideaki Nishino?
Nishino is a longtime Sony executive, not an outside hire. He joined Sony in 2000 and had already been responsible for many of PlayStation’s platform, product, technology, service, and commercial functions before taking the top SIE role.

His previous responsibilities included hardware, services, platform experience, relationships with third-party publishers and developers, and sales and marketing for hardware, services, and peripherals. That background makes him the executive most closely associated with the platform and technology side of PlayStation.
His promotion therefore represents a change in reporting structure more than a wholesale change in personnel. Many of the functions he previously oversaw remain central to his new role, but he now has overall authority for SIE.

What remains Hermen Hulst’s responsibility?
Hulst remained CEO of the Studio Business Group. Sony said that role includes:
- First-party game development
- Publishing
- Studio business operations
- Games released across PlayStation consoles and PCs
- Expansion of PlayStation game intellectual property into film and television through PlayStation Productions
This means the announcement did not remove Hulst from PlayStation Studios or from the company’s first-party content operation. The important change was that he no longer shared overall SIE CEO status with Nishino.
It is also important to distinguish Hulst’s title from the broader SIE CEO role. “Hermen Hulst remains CEO” is accurate only when it refers to the Studio Business Group; Nishino became CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment as a whole.

Why did Sony make the change?
Sony characterized the appointment as an evolution of the structure created in 2024. The company said the new arrangement was designed to maximize synergies across SIE, while retaining separate leadership for platform and studio operations.

At the same time, keeping Hulst in charge of the Studio Business Group preserves dedicated leadership for game development, publishing, PC releases, and PlayStation Productions.
However, Sony did not say that the two-CEO arrangement had failed. The announcement also did not tie the change to a particular game’s performance, a disagreement over strategy, layoffs, studio closures, or a change in financial policy. Those explanations should not be treated as established facts.
The wider Sony leadership transition
The SIE appointment was connected to a broader Sony Group transition that also took effect on April 1, 2025.
Hiroki Totoki became president and CEO of Sony Group Corporation. He also stepped down as chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment. Lin Tao left her SIE finance and strategy role to become Sony Group’s CFO.

What the change means for players
For PlayStation users, this was primarily a governance and reporting-line change. The announcement did not announce:
- A new PlayStation console
- A PlayStation Plus change
- A price change
- A new game-release policy
- A change to PlayStation account policies
- A change to backward compatibility
- A specific restructuring of individual studios
- New layoffs or studio closures
It also did not establish that PlayStation will release fewer games on PC, produce more console exclusives, expand or reduce its live-service plans, or change its hardware strategy. Those outcomes cannot be inferred from the leadership announcement alone.

What it means for developers and publishers
The new structure puts platform partnerships and first-party content under a single SIE CEO while retaining specialized executives for each area. Nishino’s platform remit includes third-party publisher and developer relations. Hulst’s remit includes first-party development and publishing.

PlayStation leadership timeline
- September 2023: Sony announced Jim Ryan’s retirement after nearly three decades with the company.
- April 1, 2024: Hiroki Totoki became interim SIE CEO after Ryan’s departure.
- May 13, 2024: Sony announced the two-business-group structure, with Nishino leading Platform and Hulst leading Studios, effective June 1.
- January 28–29, 2025: Sony announced Nishino’s appointment as SIE president and CEO.
- April 1, 2025: Nishino’s SIE appointment took effect, while Totoki became Sony Group CEO and Tao became Sony Group CFO.
The 2024 structure is detailed in Sony’s leadership announcement. Sony also published a June 2024 explanation of how Nishino and Hulst would work together under that model.
What the restructuring does—and does not—signal
The clearest conclusion is that Sony moved from parallel leadership to a more conventional hierarchy: one overall SIE CEO, with separate leaders for the platform and studio businesses.
That can improve clarity over who is ultimately accountable for PlayStation-wide decisions. It may also help align hardware, services, commercial operations, third-party relationships, first-party games, PC publishing, and entertainment adaptations. But the announcement provides no measurable evidence that execution, game output, pricing, exclusivity, or PC policy will change.
Nor was Sony merging SIE with Sony Pictures or Sony Music. PlayStation Productions remains part of Hulst’s studio remit, but that does not amount to a corporate merger of Sony’s entertainment divisions.
