Mods must support your exact Minecraft version and Fabric Loader setup; a mod for another release may not work.
Before you start: check your Minecraft edition and version
Fabric mods are for Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition. In the Minecraft Launcher, note the exact Java Edition version you plan to mod. Choose mods that explicitly support that game version and Fabric. Fabric’s mod-installation guide warns that a mod made for one Minecraft version may not work on another.

Use the version filters on a trusted mod distribution site, such as Modrinth or CurseForge, then check the individual project page for its supported versions and requirements. Do not assume a mod for an older release will work just because Minecraft still starts.
Install Fabric Loader
- Download and run the official Fabric Installer from Fabric’s player installation guide.
- In the installer, choose the Minecraft version you intend to play and install the Fabric profile.
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher, select the Fabric profile from the installations or version selector, and launch it once. This confirms that the profile starts before you add mods.
These steps describe the official Minecraft Launcher workflow. If you use a third-party launcher, follow that launcher’s own instructions for creating a Fabric instance and locating its game directory; the directory may differ from the standard one.

Download mods and check their dependencies
Download the mod’s .jar file for the exact Minecraft version and Fabric loader combination you are using. Read the project page before downloading: some mods require other mods, and dependency versions must also match your game.
Fabric API is a separate mod, not a component installed automatically with Fabric Loader. Fabric says most mods require it, but not all do. Install it only when the mod’s project page lists it as a requirement, and choose a version compatible with your Minecraft release.

Fabric Loader checks dependencies and conflicts declared by mods. If a required dependency is missing or incompatible, or mods declare conflicting requirements, the game may fail to launch. Loader documentation explains how these declarations affect loading: Fabric mod metadata and dependencies.
Put the mod files in the active game directory
Move each downloaded mod .jar file—and any required dependency file—into the mods folder for the game directory used by your Fabric installation. For the standard directory in the official launcher, the locations are:

If the mods folder does not exist, create it. If you selected a custom game directory, put the files in that directory’s mods folder instead. A mod placed in another Minecraft installation’s folder will not load in the active one.
Launch Fabric and confirm the mods load
- In the Minecraft Launcher, select the Fabric profile that matches the game version and directory where you installed the files.
- Start the game. Check the mod’s own instructions for how to confirm it is active; some mods add a menu or visible content, while others work without a prominent in-game indicator.
- If the game reaches the title screen, the Fabric profile has launched. Test the mod in a suitable world or menu according to its project instructions.
Troubleshoot a missing mod or failed launch
- The mod does not appear to load: Confirm you launched the Fabric profile, not an unmodded Minecraft profile, and that the mod file is in that profile’s active
modsfolder. - The game crashes on startup: Check the mod’s supported Minecraft and loader versions, then verify that every required dependency is present and compatible. A declared dependency or conflict that Fabric cannot resolve can prevent launch.
- The file is in the right folder but has no effect: Make sure you downloaded the Fabric build rather than a file for another mod loader, and recheck the project’s instructions for required setup or in-game activation.
- You use a custom directory or another launcher: Confirm the instance’s actual game directory and use its launcher-specific Fabric instructions; the standard paths above may not apply.
For a crash that persists after those checks, use Fabric’s crash-report and log-upload guidance to collect useful diagnostic details, or ask for help in the Fabric player-support channel.

Java requirements depend on the Minecraft version
Do not treat one Java version as universal. Fabric’s current Java guide says Minecraft 26.1 requires Java 25 at minimum. For ordinary play through the official Minecraft Launcher, Java is bundled; Fabric’s Windows .exe installer uses that bundled Java as well. A JAR-based installer or a server JAR may require you to manage Java separately. Check the requirements for the specific Minecraft release and installation method in Fabric’s Java requirements guide.
