What Midnight Commander does on a server
GNU Midnight Commander (usually started with the command mc) is a full-screen, text-mode file manager. It runs in a regular console, a terminal emulator, or an SSH session, so it is useful on servers that have no graphical desktop.

The display is organized around two directory panels. You can browse different locations side by side, select one or more entries, and perform filesystem operations without typing every source and destination path manually. The project documents support for copying, moving, renaming and deleting files or directory trees; searching; an internal viewer and editor; a diff viewer; shell commands; virtual file systems for archives and remote locations; and background operations.
That convenience does not make operations harmless. Copy, move, rename and delete change the server’s filesystem, and the subshell executes commands with the permissions and environment of your SSH account. Use the least-privileged account that can complete the job and verify both panel paths before confirming a bulk operation.

Install the package from your distribution
Use the distribution package manager rather than downloading an unrelated binary. The project lists these as the easiest installation paths.
Debian and Ubuntu
- Refresh the package index:
sudo apt update- Install Midnight Commander:
sudo apt install mcOn a server where you do not have administrative rights, ask an administrator to install the package or use an account with the appropriate delegated privilege. Do not turn a routine file-management task into a reason to log in as root.

- Install the package with DNF:
sudo dnf install mcRepository names and package availability can differ between distributions and enabled repositories. If DNF reports that no package is available, check the server’s configured repositories and distribution release rather than downloading a random executable.
Confirm the installed version
After installation, verify that the command is on your path:
mc --versionThe manual documents both -V and --version for printing the version. A version response confirms that the executable can be found; it does not test whether your terminal can render every key combination or whether subshell support was compiled in.
Start Midnight Commander in an SSH session
Connect first, then launch it
Open an SSH session to the server in your normal terminal:

ssh [email protected]Once the remote shell prompt appears, run:
mcMidnight Commander takes over the terminal with its full-screen interface. Quit it using the quit action shown in the function-key bar or the corresponding key documented by your build; you will return to the same SSH shell.
Choose predictable starting directories
You can pass one or two directory paths when launching:
mc /var/log /tmpWith two paths, the first path appears in the active panel and the second in the other panel. This is useful for a known transfer, such as reviewing logs while preparing a temporary export location.

Supplying both paths removes guesswork before a copy or move. Check that each path exists and that your account can read or write it before beginning.
Understand the two-panel interface
The two directory panels occupy most of the screen. Each shows a directory path and a listing of files and subdirectories. The current panel has the selection bar, which identifies where navigation and selection commands apply. The other panel is commonly used as the destination for a file operation.
Near the bottom is a shell command line. Below that, the function-key bar displays the actions available in your terminal session. Press F9 to reveal the menu bar if it is hidden, and press F1 for context-sensitive help. F2 opens the configurable user menu.

Press Tab to switch the active panel. Make a habit of watching the selection bar and the path header after every switch; confusing the active panel with the destination panel is one of the easiest ways to send files to the wrong location.
Navigate and select entries
- Use the arrow keys or the panel navigation bindings documented by your build to move through the listing.
- Enter a directory to browse it and use the parent-directory entry or the documented parent navigation command to go back.
- Switch panels with Tab and confirm the path shown at the top.
- Use the panel’s selection controls to mark one or more files or directories.
- Invoke the desired action from the visible function-key bar instead of assuming that a key mapping from another terminal or distribution is identical.
Filename completion is available with Alt-Tab. If your terminal intercepts that combination, type the path manually or adjust the terminal’s key settings.
Copy, move, rename and delete files safely
Copy or move between panels
For a straightforward transfer, place the source in one panel and the intended destination directory in the other.
- Navigate the active panel to the source directory.
- Press Tab and navigate the other panel to the destination directory.
- Press Tab again if necessary so the source panel is active.
- Select the files or directories to transfer.
- Choose the copy or move action shown in the function-key bar.
- Read the destination prompt carefully, including the full path and any overwrite choices, then confirm only when it matches your plan.
The manual notes that copy and rename commonly use the unselected panel as the destination and ask for confirmation. That relationship is convenient, but it is also why checking the other panel immediately before confirming matters.
Rename in place
To rename without changing directories, keep both panels pointed at the relevant location or use the rename action with the correct item selected. Review the proposed new name and watch for an overwrite prompt. A rename can change the path expected by services, scripts or users even though the file contents remain unchanged.
Delete files or directory trees
Treat deletion as irreversible unless you have a tested backup or recovery plan. Select only the intended entries, verify the active panel’s path, invoke the delete action, and read every confirmation prompt. For a directory tree, confirm that the hierarchy and item count are what you expect before accepting.

Inspect, edit and compare content
Use the internal viewer first
The built-in viewer lets you inspect a file without opening a separate program. It is useful for checking a configuration file, reading a log excerpt, or confirming that a transfer produced the expected content. Viewing is safer than editing when you only need to verify a file.
Edit only when you intend to change the server
The internal editor can modify text files directly from the panel interface. Before saving, confirm the file path, ownership context and intended encoding or syntax. Editing a service configuration can have consequences beyond the current session; make a backup or copy when the change is difficult to reproduce.
Compare files with the diff viewer
When two files should be similar, use Midnight Commander’s diff viewer to identify changes before replacing one with the other. Comparing first is especially useful for configuration revisions and for validating a generated file against the version currently deployed.
Search and locate files
Use the search feature when you know a name, pattern or piece of content but not its exact directory. Narrow the search to the relevant filesystem branch on large servers; scanning an entire mounted volume can be slow and may produce more results than the terminal can conveniently display.

Run shell commands without leaving mc
The command line near the bottom of the screen accepts shell commands while the panels remain visible. This is useful for checking permissions, printing a short status, or running a command against the directory currently displayed. Remember that the command executes on the server, as the SSH account, with that account’s environment and permissions.
Use subshell mode with Ctrl-O
Midnight Commander can provide a concurrent shell (often called subshell mode). Press Ctrl-O to hide the panels and expose the shell, run a command, then press Ctrl-O again to return to the panels. The exact behavior depends on terminal key handling and how the package was built.

The manual documents -u or --nosubshell to disable concurrent shell support and -U or --subshell to enable it when the build supports it. Do not assume that enabling the option can add support to a build that lacks the required feature.
Browse archives, remote locations and long operations
The project README documents virtual file systems for archives and remote machines. These let you inspect supported locations through the same panel model, but they do not remove the need to understand permissions, network reachability or archive semantics. Test a small, reversible operation before starting a bulk transfer.

Monitor the operation and confirm its result before deleting the source. On a slow SSH connection, a large transfer can outlive your terminal session; plan for interruption and verify which files completed.
Fix common SSH and terminal problems
“mc: command not found”
- Confirm that the package installation completed without errors.
- Run
mc --versionin the same account and SSH session where you plan to use it. - Check that the package manager installed the executable in a directory on your
PATH. - If the distribution repository does not provide the package, consult the enabled repository configuration for that release.
The screen is garbled or the interface does not refresh correctly
- Use a terminal emulator with normal support for full-screen text applications.
- Reconnect through SSH if the terminal was resized or suspended during startup.
- Check your terminal’s character encoding and function-key settings.
- Use F1 and the visible key labels rather than relying on a copied key sequence from a different terminal.
Ctrl-O does nothing
Check the issue in this order:
- Login shell: the FAQ states that only
bash,tcshandzshcan be used as the subshell. - Terminal handling: some terminal programs intercept control or function-key combinations. Try the visible alternate key sequence supported by your terminal, adjust its key bindings, or test with another terminal configuration.
- Build options: verify whether the installed package supports subshell mode. Starting with
mc -udeliberately disables it;mc -Urequests it when the build supports it. - Session state: test the key in a simple SSH session and after reconnecting if the current terminal has become confused.
If subshell mode remains unavailable, use the command line at the bottom of the panel or open a second SSH session. File management does not depend on Ctrl-O.
A copy or move went to an unexpected place
- Stop and inspect both panel headers.
- Remember that the unselected panel is commonly used as the destination.
- Check the confirmation dialog’s complete destination path before accepting.
- If the operation already ran, use the viewer, search function or shell commands to locate the resulting files before attempting another transfer.
Server safety checklist
- Log in with the least-privileged account that can complete the task.
- Use
sudoonly for the specific operation that requires elevated rights. - Verify both panel paths before every copy, move, rename or delete operation.
- Remember that commands in the subshell inherit the SSH account’s permissions and environment.
- Do not launch
mcinside automation that expects plain standard output; it is an interactive full-screen application. - For archives, remote locations and background transfers, test a small reversible operation first.
- Keep a backup or rollback plan before editing production configuration or deleting a directory tree.

When Midnight Commander is the right tool
Choose it when you need a visual, keyboard-driven view of a server filesystem over SSH, especially when comparing two locations, inspecting files before moving them, or performing a small number of deliberate interactive changes. Its panels reduce path-typing errors, while the viewer, editor, search, archive and remote features keep related work in one terminal.
Use a different approach when a task must be unattended, reproducible and machine-readable. Because mc is an interactive full-screen program, scripts should use purpose-built non-interactive commands and explicit logging instead of trying to parse its screen output.
