On a Linux VPS, the safest deployment is to install the distribution package and PHP’s PostgreSQL extension, publish the application through Apache or Nginx with PHP-FPM, connect it to PostgreSQL on localhost:5432, and keep the interface behind HTTPS and an IP allow-list.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Do not expose PostgreSQL itself to the public internet just to make phpPgAdmin work. Keep extra_login_security enabled, use a least-privilege database role for routine administration, and verify that the phpPgAdmin release actually supports your PostgreSQL major version before you deploy.

What you are installing
phpPgAdmin is a PHP web application. It does not replace PostgreSQL and it does not run a second database server. Your VPS still needs a working PostgreSQL service; phpPgAdmin supplies a web interface for connecting to that service, browsing databases and schemas, running SQL, and administering roles and objects.
The normal request path is:
- A browser reaches Apache or Nginx over HTTPS.
- The web server serves phpPgAdmin’s static files and sends PHP requests to PHP or PHP-FPM.
- phpPgAdmin opens a PostgreSQL connection to the host and port configured in
config.inc.php. - PostgreSQL authenticates the database user and applies that role’s existing privileges.
Because the web application can issue SQL with the privileges of the account that logs in, treat it as an administrative surface, not as an ordinary public website.

Check prerequisites and version support first
Server prerequisites
- A supported Linux distribution with administrator access through
sudoor the root account. - A running PostgreSQL instance on the VPS, preferably bound to its loopback interface when phpPgAdmin and PostgreSQL are on the same machine.
- A web server: Apache is the simpler package-based route because distributions commonly ship an alias configuration; Nginx requires a PHP-FPM location block.
- PHP plus the PostgreSQL extension. On Debian and Ubuntu the extension package is commonly named
php-pgsql; on CentOS or RHEL, install the distribution’s PHP PostgreSQL module separately from the phpPgAdmin package. - A firewall policy that permits administration traffic only where it is needed. A typical small VPS allows SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS, while PostgreSQL remains inaccessible from the public network.
Confirm the phpPgAdmin/PostgreSQL combination
Version compatibility is the most easily missed prerequisite. The official releases page currently marks phpPgAdmin 7.13.0 as the latest release. Its announcement says that release supports PostgreSQL 13 and offers provisional support for PostgreSQL 14. That does not establish support for every newer PostgreSQL major version.
| Evidence | What it establishes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| phpPgAdmin 7.13.0 release announcement | PostgreSQL 13 support and provisional PostgreSQL 14 support | Suitable starting point for PostgreSQL 13; test carefully with 14 |
| Debian bug report concerning phppgadmin 7.13.0 | The package does not support PostgreSQL 15 | Do not assume a Debian package is usable with PostgreSQL 15 |
| FreshPorts package tracker | Lists version 7.14.8 and records a 7.14.3 change adding PostgreSQL 15 support | Packager information, not an upstream release guarantee |
| Official repository pull request #171 | Title refers to PostgreSQL 15–17 support and a speed update | Merge status and release inclusion were not confirmed |
| PostgreSQL 16 and 17 | No confirmed support was established | Check the upstream release notes and HISTORY file for your exact combination |
Record the PostgreSQL major version before installation:
psql --version
sudo -u postgres psql -c "SHOW server_version;"
Then read the release notes and HISTORY file for the phpPgAdmin version supplied by your distribution. If the package is older than the version you need, stop and resolve compatibility rather than disabling security checks or forcing an untested connection.
Install phpPgAdmin on Debian or Ubuntu
Debian-family distributions package phpPgAdmin and keep its configuration under /etc/phppgadmin/. Installing the package is preferable to copying an old release tarball into the web root because package updates, permissions, and web-server integration are handled by the distribution.
- Refresh package metadata:
sudo apt update - Install phpPgAdmin and PHP’s PostgreSQL extension:
sudo apt install phppgadmin php-pgsqlAccept any additional PHP or web-server dependencies that your distribution selects.
- Confirm the configuration directory exists:
sudo ls -la /etc/phppgadmin/The principal application configuration is normally
/etc/phppgadmin/config.inc.php. - Check which Apache configuration file the package installed. Package versions commonly provide an alias configuration in Apache’s available-configuration directory:
ls /etc/apache2/conf-available/ | grep -i phppgadmin
If apt reports that no package is available, do not silently substitute a random archive. Verify the distribution release and enabled repositories, then check the compatibility notes for the package version that would actually be installed.
Install phpPgAdmin on CentOS or RHEL
On CentOS and RHEL, install phpPgAdmin with yum when it is available in the repositories configured on the server. The PHP PostgreSQL module is installed separately.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Refresh repository metadata:
sudo yum makecache - Install the application:
sudo yum install phppgadmin - Install the PHP PostgreSQL extension:
sudo yum install php-pgsqlThe exact package name can vary with the distribution generation; use the package manager’s search output if this name is unavailable.
- Locate the installed configuration and web files:
rpm -ql phppgadmin | lessLook for
config.inc.phpand the web-server configuration supplied by the package. - Restart the PHP handler and web server after changing configuration. Service names differ by release, so list the installed units before restarting them:
systemctl list-unit-files | grep -E 'httpd|php-fpm|nginx'
If the package cannot be found, first confirm that the repositories for your exact CentOS or RHEL release still provide it. A manual tarball install is possible, but one commonly cited tutorial warns that its method may not represent the current approach; package installation is the safer default.
Publish it with Apache
Apache is usually the shortest path on Debian and Ubuntu because the phpPgAdmin package commonly ships an alias configuration. The alias maps a URL path such as /phppgadmin to the installed application directory.

/etc/apache2/conf-available/and use the exact filename installed by your package. - Check the Apache configuration before reloading:
sudo apachectl configtestProceed only when the result reports that the syntax is valid.
- Reload Apache without dropping existing connections:
sudo systemctl reload apache2 - Open the alias URL from an allowed client, for example
https://server.example/phppgadminafter you have configured TLS and any access restrictions. If you have not yet configured TLS, use HTTP only for a brief local test; do not send database credentials over an unencrypted public connection.
On systems using httpd rather than Debian’s apache2 service name, use the distribution’s corresponding service and configuration-test commands. The important sequence is to enable the shipped alias, validate syntax, and reload the server.
Publish it with Nginx and PHP-FPM
Nginx does not interpret PHP itself. It must serve phpPgAdmin’s files and pass requests ending in .php to PHP-FPM through the Unix socket or TCP listener used by your distribution.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Find the package’s installed web directory and PHP-FPM socket. On Debian-family systems, inspect the package manifest; on RPM systems, use
rpm -ql phppgadmin. For PHP-FPM, inspect the pool configuration or the service status to identify the active socket. - Create a dedicated Nginx server block or add a protected location to the existing HTTPS server. A representative configuration is:
location /phppgadmin/ {
root /usr/share/phppgadmin;
index index.php;
try_files $uri $uri/ /phppgadmin/index.php?$query_string;
location ~ ^/phppgadmin/.+.php$ {
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
}
The directory and socket shown above are examples of the directives’ shape, not universal paths. Replace them with the paths installed on your VPS. Debian and Ubuntu often use a versioned socket such as /run/php/php8.x-fpm.sock; other distributions can use a different filename or a TCP listener. The Nginx worker and PHP-FPM pool must be able to read the application files, and the fastcgi_pass value must exactly match the running PHP-FPM endpoint.
- Test Nginx syntax:
sudo nginx -t - Reload Nginx and PHP-FPM after validating the configuration:
sudo systemctl reload nginx sudo systemctl reload php-fpmUse the versioned PHP-FPM service name when
php-fpmis not a valid unit. - Request the alias over HTTPS. A 404 usually means the alias or root path is wrong; a 502 usually means Nginx cannot reach the PHP-FPM socket or the service is stopped.
Set the PostgreSQL connection
Edit the package configuration file, normally /etc/phppgadmin/config.inc.php:
sudoedit /etc/phppgadmin/config.inc.php
Set the server host to the loopback name and the PostgreSQL port to the local default:
$conf['servers'][0]['host'] = 'localhost';
$conf['servers'][0]['port'] = 5432;
Keep the setting aligned with the actual PostgreSQL listener. If your database uses a non-default port, use that port instead of changing PostgreSQL or opening a new firewall path merely for phpPgAdmin.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not put a database password in this file unless your deployment specifically requires a stored credential and you have protected the file appropriately. phpPgAdmin can prompt for the database account at login, which avoids embedding a reusable administrator password in the web configuration.
After saving, verify that the file remains readable by the web process but is not downloadable as source code. A correctly configured Apache or Nginx/PHP-FPM stack should execute the PHP file and display the login page, never show its contents.

Secure the login before using it
Keep localhost as the database endpoint
When PostgreSQL and phpPgAdmin run on one VPS, localhost avoids sending credentials across a network interface. Keep PostgreSQL bound to loopback where possible. Do not follow guides that open port 5432 to the internet as a routine installation step; that is a deliberate relaxation of security and is unnecessary for a local web application.
Leave extra_login_security enabled
The default security setting blocks logins without a password and rejects the names postgres, root, and administrator. Leave it enabled:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
$conf['extra_login_security'] = true;
Some tutorials turn this setting off so that the PostgreSQL superuser can sign in. That makes password attacks and configuration mistakes more damaging. Create a named role with only the privileges required for routine work, and reserve the PostgreSQL superuser for tasks that genuinely require it.
Understand what owned_only does
The owned_only option controls what appears in the database list; it is not an authorization boundary. A user can still reach another database with SQL if PostgreSQL grants that capability. Enforce access with PostgreSQL roles, database ownership, schema privileges, and network policy rather than relying on a hidden list.
Restrict the web interface
The default phpPgAdmin configuration limits access to localhost. If administrators must connect from another machine, change the web-server access rule deliberately and restrict it to known source addresses. An IP allow-list at Apache or Nginx is stronger than relying on an obscure URL.
You can also change the default /phppgadmin alias as a basic obscurity measure. This may reduce automated scanning noise, but it is not authentication and must never replace an allow-list, strong database passwords, or HTTPS.
Use HTTPS and an additional boundary
Terminate HTTPS with a valid certificate before allowing remote logins. Consider placing the interface behind HTTP Basic Authentication, a VPN, or both. These controls reduce exposure of the login page and provide a second barrier if a database credential is leaked.
Apply a narrow firewall policy
A small VPS commonly needs only SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS at the host firewall. For UFW, a starting policy is:

sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable

Adapt the rules to your existing remote-access method before enabling the firewall so you do not lock yourself out. There should be no public UFW rule for TCP port 5432 when PostgreSQL is serving only the local phpPgAdmin instance.

- Browse to the protected alias, such as
https://server.example/phppgadmin. - Enter a PostgreSQL role name and its password. Use a role created for administration rather than automatically using
postgres. - Confirm that the displayed server is the expected host and port. A local deployment should show the configured loopback connection and port
5432, unless you intentionally selected another port. - Log out when finished, especially on a shared workstation.
Browse databases and schemas
The server tree exposes databases available to the logged-in role. Select a database to inspect its schemas, tables, views, sequences, functions, and extensions. What you can see and change is determined by PostgreSQL privileges, not by the web page alone. If an object is absent, check the role’s grants and the object’s schema.
Run SQL carefully
Use the SQL or query page to run a statement against the selected database. Review the database name and the SQL text before executing destructive commands. For changes such as DROP, bulk DELETE, or migration scripts, take a current backup and run the statement first in a staging database when possible. phpPgAdmin is a client; it does not add an undo facility to PostgreSQL.
Manage roles and privileges
Role administration is where least privilege matters most. Grant only the database, schema, table, and sequence permissions a service or human actually needs. Avoid making application accounts owners of every object, and avoid sharing the superuser password among operators. After changing a role, test with a separate session using that role so you verify the effective permissions rather than assuming the form submission succeeded.
Export and import
Use phpPgAdmin’s database export and import controls for small, interactive jobs, but monitor large operations. Browser requests can time out, and a failed upload or interrupted connection may leave you unsure whether a statement completed. For large or production-critical backups, use PostgreSQL’s command-line tools and verify the resulting backup independently; treat the web interface as a convenience, not the only copy of your data.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
The package is unavailable
Check the operating-system release, enabled repositories, and package spelling. Compare the candidate package’s phpPgAdmin version with your PostgreSQL major version. If the available package is known not to support your database, do not solve the problem by disabling extra_login_security or exposing PostgreSQL remotely.
The alias returns 404
On Apache, confirm that the packaged configuration is enabled and that Apache was reloaded after enabling it. On Nginx, verify the location prefix, the installed application directory, and whether a trailing slash changes the matching rule.

The browser displays PHP source
PHP is being served as a static file. Check that PHP and, for Nginx, PHP-FPM are installed and active. Confirm that the request matches the PHP location block and that the web server was reloaded after configuration changes. Do not leave the site online while source code is visible.
Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway
Check the PHP-FPM service status and compare its configured socket with fastcgi_pass. Confirm that the Nginx worker can access the socket and that the PHP-FPM pool is listening. A versioned socket filename is a frequent cause after a PHP upgrade.
The login page cannot connect
Verify that PostgreSQL is running, listening on the configured port, and accepting local connections. Confirm the host and port in config.inc.php, then test independently:
psql -h localhost -p 5432 -U your_role -d postgres
If the command-line connection fails, fix PostgreSQL authentication or role privileges first; changing phpPgAdmin’s web settings will not correct a database-level rejection.
The server list is empty or objects are missing
Check the logged-in role’s privileges and the owned_only setting. Remember that hiding databases from the list is presentation filtering, not authorization. Test the role directly with psql and inspect PostgreSQL grants.
PostgreSQL 15, 16, or 17 behaves unexpectedly
Do not infer support from a package’s successful installation. phpPgAdmin 7.13.0 is documented for PostgreSQL 13 and provisionally 14; a Debian report records a PostgreSQL 15 incompatibility. Packager records and an unconfirmed upstream pull request mention later support, but they do not prove that your installed release includes it. Check the exact upstream release notes and HISTORY file, test against a non-production database, and choose a supported combination.
Operate and maintain the installation
- Apply operating-system, PHP, web-server, and phpPgAdmin package updates through the normal package-management process.
- After updates, rerun the web-server configuration test and verify the PHP-FPM socket name; PHP upgrades often change versioned socket paths.
- Review access logs for unexpected requests to the phpPgAdmin alias and investigate repeated authentication failures.
- Keep PostgreSQL backups independent of the web interface and test restoration.
- Recheck the compatibility matrix before upgrading PostgreSQL to a new major version.
- Remove unused database roles and revoke privileges that are no longer required.
To remove a package-based installation, first disable its Apache or Nginx configuration, confirm that no other site uses its files, and then remove the package with the distribution package manager. Preserve database data and backups; uninstalling phpPgAdmin does not uninstall PostgreSQL, and uninstalling PostgreSQL can destroy the databases it serves.
