Use PHP’s PDO_MYSQL driver and point the DSN at the database server’s DNS name or IP address—not localhost. A working remote connection also depends on MySQL listening on a reachable interface, the port being allowed through every firewall, and a MySQL account permitted to connect from the PHP server.

<?php
$dsn = 'mysql:host=db.example.com;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4';
$options = [
    PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION,
    PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,
    PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
];

$pdo = new PDO($dsn, getenv('DB_USER'), getenv('DB_PASSWORD'), $options);

The sections below show how to prepare the network and database, choose the correct host and port, add TLS, diagnose each common error, and deploy the connection without exposing credentials.

What a remote PHP-to-MySQL connection requires

PHP runs on one machine and MySQL runs on another. PHP must resolve the database hostname, route packets to it, open the MySQL listening port, complete TLS if required, and authenticate a MySQL account whose host rules allow the PHP server’s source address. PDO creates the connection; it does not open firewalls, change MySQL listening settings, or grant account privileges.

  • PHP driver: the pdo_mysql extension must be installed and enabled in the PHP runtime that executes the application.
  • Endpoint: obtain the database DNS name or IP address and its listening port. MySQL’s conventional port is 3306, but your server may use another value.
  • Network path: DNS, routing, host firewalls, cloud security groups, and network ACLs must permit traffic from the PHP host to the database port.
  • MySQL listener: the server’s bind_address configuration must include an interface reachable from the PHP host.
  • Database account: use a dedicated, least-privilege user whose permitted host or network includes the PHP server.
  • Security: use TLS whenever the traffic crosses an untrusted network and keep credentials outside source code.

Test DNS and TCP reachability from the PHP machine before changing application code. A failed network test cannot be fixed by altering the PDO DSN.

Install and verify PDO_MYSQL

PDO is the PHP database abstraction interface; PDO_MYSQL is the driver that lets it speak to MySQL. Install or enable that extension for the same PHP installation used by your web server or worker process. Command-line PHP and the PHP module used by a web server can load different configuration files, so verify both when they differ.

  1. Run php -m and confirm that pdo_mysql appears in the module list.
  2. If it is missing, install the PDO MySQL package supplied by your operating system or PHP distribution, then restart the relevant PHP-FPM, Apache, or application service.
  3. Run a small diagnostic script through the same execution path as the application and inspect phpinfo() or the loaded-module list if the driver still does not appear.

Do not put a password in a diagnostic script that could be served publicly. Remove temporary diagnostics after verification.

Find the correct host, port, and database name

The DSN identifies the server and the database to select after login. The four remote-connection components are:

DSN component Purpose Typical value
mysql: PDO driver prefix mysql:
host DNS name or IP address of the MySQL server db.example.com
port TCP port on which MySQL listens 3306
dbname Database selected for the connection app
charset Client character set utf8mb4

For a managed Amazon RDS instance, use the DB instance endpoint as host and the endpoint’s configured port. Do not substitute the website’s hostname unless that name actually resolves to the MySQL service.

The database name is not necessarily the same as the server name or application name. Ask the database administrator for the exact schema name and whether the account is allowed to use it.

Why localhost fails for a remote database

In PDO_MYSQL, localhost has special behavior: PHP attempts a Unix-domain socket connection on the local machine. It does not mean “the computer where MySQL happens to run.” If MySQL is on another server, use that server’s DNS name or IP address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a local test where MySQL is on the same machine, use 127.0.0.1 when you specifically want TCP/IP. This avoids the socket behavior of localhost. For a genuinely remote service, use the remote endpoint:

$remoteDsn = 'mysql:host=db.example.com;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4';
$localTcpDsn = 'mysql:host=127.0.0.1;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4';

Changing localhost to 127.0.0.1 only changes how PHP reaches a local server; it does not make a remote server available.

Prepare MySQL and the network

Configure the listener

MySQL’s bind_address system variable controls which addresses accept TCP/IP connections. A listener bound only to the loopback interface accepts local connections but cannot receive traffic from the PHP host. Configure a reachable private interface or address appropriate for your network, then restart or reload MySQL according to your operating system’s procedure.

A public, unrestricted bind address is not a substitute for a firewall. Expose only the interface and source networks required by the application.

Open the path to the port

Allow the selected port through the database host firewall and any intervening network controls. In a cloud deployment, inbound security-group rules and network ACLs must allow the PHP server’s source address or private network. Rules should be as narrow as practical: permit the application network, not the entire internet.

Create a restricted account

MySQL accounts include both a username and an allowed source host. Create a dedicated account for the application, grant only the statements and schemas it needs, and ensure its host component matches the PHP server’s address or network. A user that works from an administrator workstation may still receive Access denied from the application host because MySQL sees a different source address.

Check reachability from the PHP host

Resolve the endpoint and test the TCP port from the machine that runs PHP. For example, use your operating system’s DNS lookup utility, then a TCP probe such as nc -vz db.example.com 3306 where netcat is available. These tests distinguish name-resolution and network failures from PHP or credential failures. A successful TCP probe proves that the port is reachable; it does not prove that the username, password, TLS settings, or database privileges are correct.

Build a production PDO connection

Pass the DSN, username, password, and options to PDO. Enable exceptions so connection and query failures are handled explicitly, return associative arrays by default, and disable emulated prepares so values are prepared by the MySQL driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<?php
declare(strict_types=1);

$dsn = sprintf(
    'mysql:host=%s;port=%s;dbname=%s;charset=utf8mb4',
    getenv('DB_HOST'),
    getenv('DB_PORT') ?: '3306',
    getenv('DB_NAME')
);

$options = [
    PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION,
    PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,
    PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
];

try {
    $pdo = new PDO($dsn, getenv('DB_USER'), getenv('DB_PASSWORD'), $options);
} catch (PDOException $e) {
    error_log('Database connection failed: ' . $e->getMessage());
    throw $e;
}

The constructor creates the connection immediately. If it cannot connect, PHP throws PDOException. Log enough context to correlate the failure, but never log the password, full DSN when it contains secrets, or credentials supplied in an exception message.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Use the connection safely

Prepared statements keep user-supplied values out of SQL text. They do not grant privileges or repair a network problem; they protect query values after the connection exists.

$statement = $pdo->prepare(
    'SELECT id, title FROM games WHERE player_id = :player_id'
);
$statement->execute(['player_id' => $playerId]);
$games = $statement->fetchAll();

Choose the intended database in the DSN with dbname, then verify that the account has the required permissions. A connection can succeed while a later SELECT, INSERT, or migration fails because the account is deliberately restricted.

Keep credentials out of source code

Read the username and password from environment variables or a secret manager injected into the PHP process. Set DB_HOST, DB_PORT, DB_NAME, DB_USER, and DB_PASSWORD through your deployment system, protect the process configuration, and rotate the account password without committing it to version control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a separate account per application or environment.
  • Grant only the schemas and operations that application requires.
  • Prevent configuration files containing secrets from being served by the web server.
  • Redact passwords and complete connection strings from logs, stack traces, and support tickets.
  • Use a secret manager when your hosting platform provides one, especially for automated rotation.

Enable TLS for remote traffic

Use TLS whenever packets cross an untrusted network. AWS’s guidance limits unencrypted MySQL connections to clients and servers in the same trusted VPC. A private network reduces exposure but does not automatically provide encryption or eliminate the need for access controls.

PDO_MYSQL exposes options for a certificate authority, client certificate, client key, cipher selection, and server-certificate verification. The exact CA file and certificate paths depend on your deployment. A typical verified configuration is:

Use the CA that issued the database server’s certificate, keep the endpoint hostname consistent with the certificate’s identity, and make sure the PHP host’s clock is correct. Do not disable certificate verification merely to bypass an error; fix the CA path, certificate name, or trust chain instead. If the server requires a client certificate or a particular cipher, configure the corresponding PDO_MYSQL attributes supplied by that service.

Symptom What it means Checks and fixes
Could not resolve host The PHP host cannot translate the endpoint name to an address. Verify the exact DNS name, resolver configuration, private-zone access, and whether the endpoint is available from the PHP network.
Connection refused The address was reached but no service accepted the TCP connection on that port. Confirm MySQL is running, the port is correct, bind_address includes a reachable interface, and host or cloud firewalls allow the connection.
Connection timeout Packets are being dropped or cannot reach the destination. Check routing, security groups, network ACLs, firewalls, VPN or private-link paths, and the source address used by the PHP host.
Access denied for user The server was reached, but authentication or account host permissions failed. Check the username, password, selected database, and the MySQL account’s permitted source host. Confirm that the PHP server’s address is the one MySQL sees.
Authentication-plugin error The PHP client library may not support the server’s configured authentication plugin. Check PHP and mysqlnd versions and upgrade the client where possible. MySQL 8’s caching_sha2_password requires sufficiently recent PHP support; PHP documents support from PHP 7.4.4 and later.
TLS or certificate error The encrypted handshake or certificate validation failed. Verify the CA file, certificate hostname, file permissions, system time, required client certificate, and that server verification is enabled with the correct trust chain.
Connection succeeds but a query fails Transport and authentication work; SQL selection or privileges are the remaining issue. Check dbname, table and schema names, account grants, SQL syntax, and parameter binding.

Use a minimal isolation test

Temporarily test only the constructor with a known account and the intended endpoint. Do not combine connection diagnosis with application routing, migrations, or a large query. Once the constructor works, run a harmless statement such as SELECT 1, then test the application’s actual database and permissions. Remove the test endpoint or protect it before deployment.

PDO and mysqli: choosing the PHP interface

PDO and mysqli are both supported PHP interfaces to MySQL. PDO is used here because its documented DSN separates host, port, database, and character set cleanly, and its options array makes exception handling, fetch mode, prepared statements, and TLS settings explicit.

Choose mysqli when an existing codebase already depends on it or when you need a MySQL-specific API that your team has standardized on. The underlying prerequisites do not change: DNS, routing, listener configuration, firewall and security-group rules, MySQL account host permissions, TLS policy, and credential handling must still be correct. Switching APIs cannot fix a refused connection or an account that is not authorized from the PHP server.

Managed endpoint versus self-managed MySQL

The connection code is similar whether MySQL runs on a self-managed server or a managed service, but the operational work differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision area Self-managed MySQL Amazon RDS for MySQL
Endpoint and port You choose the server address and configure the listener. The service supplies a DB instance endpoint and endpoint port.
Network controls You maintain host firewalls, routing, and any cloud rules. You configure suitable inbound security-group rules and network controls for the PHP client.
TLS You select certificates, trust stores, renewal, and verification policy. The service provides certificate guidance; the PHP client still needs the correct CA and verification settings.
Backups and maintenance Your team schedules, tests, and monitors backups, upgrades, and maintenance. The service supplies managed maintenance features, but you still choose settings, verify restores, and plan application compatibility.
Operational responsibility You own the database host, operating system, MySQL configuration, capacity, and failure recovery. The provider operates the database infrastructure; you remain responsible for schema design, credentials, grants, network policy, and application behavior.
Trade-offs to evaluate More control and potentially different costs, with more administration. Less infrastructure administration, with service-specific pricing, limits, latency, and provider controls to evaluate.

For either option, keep the database on a private network where practical, restrict inbound access to the PHP application, encrypt traffic, and monitor failed logins and connection saturation.

Deployment checklist

  1. Confirm the PHP runtime has pdo_mysql enabled.
  2. Record the exact database hostname, port, database name, username, and TLS requirements.
  3. Resolve the hostname and test the TCP port from the PHP host.
  4. Verify MySQL is running and its bind_address permits the intended network.
  5. Allow the port only from the PHP host or application network in host firewalls, security groups, and ACLs.
  6. Create or verify a least-privilege MySQL account whose host permissions include the PHP source address.
  7. Set PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE to PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION, use associative fetches, and disable emulated prepares.
  8. Load credentials from environment variables or a secret manager, never from committed source.
  9. Enable TLS and server-certificate verification whenever the network is not fully trusted.
  10. Run a minimal connection test, then a permission test against the intended database.
  11. Remove diagnostic endpoints and ensure logs cannot expose passwords or sensitive DSN data.

Common fixes that do not solve the real problem

  • Changing only the password: this cannot fix a DNS failure, blocked port, or MySQL listener bound to loopback.
  • Replacing the endpoint with localhost: this redirects PDO to a local Unix socket and is incorrect when MySQL is remote.
  • Opening port 3306 to everyone: broad exposure increases risk and hides the need for a precise source-network rule.
  • Disabling TLS verification: this suppresses a safety check instead of correcting the CA, hostname, or certificate chain.
  • Granting an administrator account: it may make a test pass while creating unnecessary damage if application credentials leak.
  • Logging the entire exception publicly: errors can disclose hostnames, usernames, SQL details, or other operational information.
