DirectX is already built into Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7. You normally do not install a separate “latest DirectX” package. Check the installed version with dxdiag, use Windows Update to receive the DirectX version supported by your Windows release, and install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer only when an older game needs a missing legacy component.
This distinction matters because the legacy runtime adds side-by-side libraries such as D3DX files; it does not replace or upgrade the core DirectX runtime that Windows supplies.

What “install DirectX” means on these Windows versions
DirectX is a collection of Windows components used by games and multimedia applications for graphics, sound, input, and related tasks. On Windows 10, 8.1, 8, and 7, the core DirectX runtime is an operating-system component. Microsoft distributes updates for that component through normal Windows servicing rather than through one universal installer that works for every edition.

A package intended for one Windows release cannot be used to turn every other release into the same DirectX version. The supported route is to identify your Windows release, check what is installed, and let Windows Update deliver applicable components.

There is a second category of files that older games may require. Games built with older DirectX SDKs can look for optional libraries that are not part of the modern core installation. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer supplies those legacy, side-by-side files. It leaves the core DirectX version already installed in Windows unchanged.
DirectX versions included with Windows
| Windows release | Included DirectX | Supported update path |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 | DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12 | Windows Update; there is no standalone package for the core versions |
| Windows 8.1 | DirectX 11.2 | Windows Update; there is no standalone package for the core version |
| Windows 8 | DirectX 11.1 | Windows Update; there is no standalone package for the core version |
| Windows 7 | DirectX 11.0; DirectX 11.1 is available on Service Pack 1 systems with KB2670838 | Windows servicing, including the required service pack and platform update |
The version shown in this table is the DirectX platform associated with the Windows release, not a promise that every game supports every feature. A game can still require an older optional library even when the computer reports a newer DirectX version.
Step 1: Check the DirectX version with DxDiag
Before changing anything, record what is installed. Windows includes the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, commonly called DxDiag.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Start or Windows Search.
- Type
dxdiag. - Launch DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If Windows asks whether to check digitally signed drivers, choose the option appropriate for your support situation; the version check itself does not require a driver change.
- On the System tab, read the DirectX Version entry under System Information.
Write down the exact game error as well. “DirectX is missing” is less useful than a message naming a file such as d3dx9_43.dll, xinput1_3.dll, or another component. The filename helps determine whether Windows servicing or the legacy runtime is relevant.
The version field tells you the core runtime recognized by Windows. It does not list every optional legacy SDK library installed for older games, so a current-looking version number does not rule out a missing legacy file.
Step 2: Update the core DirectX components through Windows Update
Windows Update is the supported method for updating the DirectX platform included with Windows 10, 8.1, and 8. It also supplies normal servicing for Windows 7; on Windows 7, the platform update requirement described below must be met before the newer platform level is available.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow applicable updates to download and install.
- Restart when Windows requests it. A restart can be required before a game or DxDiag reflects the servicing change.
- Run
dxdiagagain and retry the game.
Windows 10 does not have a separate Microsoft package that upgrades the built-in DirectX 11.3 or DirectX 12 runtime independently of Windows servicing. If Windows Update reports that the system is current, downloading a random “DirectX 12 installer” will not provide a supported alternative.

The core DirectX platform for Windows 8.1 is serviced as part of Windows. The legacy runtime described later is a separate operation for games that request older SDK files.

Windows 8
- Search for Windows Update from the Start screen, or open it through Control Panel.
- Choose the option to check for updates.
- Install applicable updates, restart as required, and verify with
dxdiag.
Installing a legacy runtime does not convert Windows 8 to a newer core DirectX platform. Core updates remain tied to Windows Update and the servicing level of the operating system.
Windows 7
- Open Control Panel and select System and Security, then Windows Update.
- Check for updates and install the updates offered for your system.
- Restart whenever Windows requests it.
- Open
dxdiagand record the reported version.
Windows 7 includes DirectX 11.0. DirectX 11.1 availability requires Windows 7 Service Pack 1 together with platform update KB2670838. If either prerequisite is absent, Windows 7 will not gain that platform level simply by running a generic DirectX installer.
Windows 7: verify Service Pack 1 and KB2670838
If a Windows 7 game specifically needs a feature associated with DirectX 11.1, check the operating-system prerequisites before troubleshooting the game itself.
Check the service pack
- Right-click Computer or open Control Panel > System and Security > System.
- Look at the Windows edition information for Service Pack 1.
- If Service Pack 1 is not shown, use Windows servicing to bring the operating system to the supported service-pack level before looking for the platform update.
Check for KB2670838
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select View installed updates.
- Search the list for KB2670838.
- If it is missing, check Windows Update for the platform update appropriate to the computer, install it, restart, and run
dxdiagagain.
The presence of the update does not guarantee that a particular game will run. It only establishes the Windows 7 platform condition associated with DirectX 11.1; the game may still need legacy libraries, a compatible graphics driver, or its own files.
Step 3: Install the legacy DirectX End-User Runtime when a game names a missing file
Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer when an older game reports a missing legacy component or fails with an error naming one of the optional SDK libraries. The Microsoft Download Center lists version 9.29.1974.1, published July 15, 2024.
The installer supports older games that use legacy technologies including:
- D3DX9, D3DX10, and D3DX11 libraries
- XAudio 2.7
- XInput 1.3
- XACT
- Managed DirectX 1.1
These are side-by-side components. The installer does not change the DirectX version displayed by DxDiag and does not replace the core runtime delivered with Windows.

Installation procedure
- Download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from the Microsoft Download Center. Use the Microsoft source rather than a site offering individual DLL files.
- Run the downloaded installer and review its licence and installation prompts.
- Allow it to install the optional legacy components. The installer may need an internet connection to retrieve the files.
- Restart Windows if the installer or the game requests a restart.
- Launch the game again. If it still fails, record the new exact message instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same package.
Running this installer is appropriate for a legacy-library error, not as a routine way to “upgrade to DirectX 12.” It can coexist with the DirectX platform already in Windows because its purpose is to add older side-by-side files.

Understanding common missing-DLL messages
“d3dx9_43.dll is missing”
This message usually identifies a legacy D3DX9 library expected by an older game. The DirectX End-User Runtime is the supported way to add that optional library. Do not download a single d3dx9_43.dll file from a third-party DLL site: a lone file can be the wrong build, can be packaged with unwanted software, and does not install the related files the game may also need.
Other D3DX, XAudio, or XInput errors
Errors naming D3DX9, D3DX10, D3DX11, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, or Managed DirectX 1.1 point to the same legacy-runtime category. Install the Microsoft runtime as a complete package rather than searching for each filename separately.
When the message does not name a legacy component
A generic graphics or initialization error is not proof that DirectX itself is absent. First complete Windows Update, restart, and check DxDiag. If the game then reports a driver, shader, or hardware-specific problem, troubleshoot that separate layer instead of installing unrelated DLLs.

When a game publisher or support technician asks for diagnostic details, DxDiag can create a report without requiring you to copy individual lines manually.
- Open
dxdiagfrom Start or Search. - Wait for the tool to finish collecting information.
- Select Save All Information….
- Choose a location you can find, save the text report, and provide it only through the support channel you trust.
The report can show the Windows version, DirectX version, display and audio devices, and driver information that help distinguish a missing legacy component from a graphics-driver or configuration issue. It is more useful to send the complete report requested by support than to guess which DirectX file should be replaced.
A practical decision tree for installation problems
The game starts normally but you want the newest DirectX
Do not install a separate package simply because a newer number exists. Run Windows Update for your Windows release, restart if requested, and verify with DxDiag. The operating system determines which core DirectX version is supported.
Windows Update has pending updates
Install them, restart, and check again. If an update repeatedly fails, resolve the Windows Update failure through Windows servicing before trying a DirectX runtime package; the legacy installer is not a replacement for Windows Update.

The game names a legacy DLL
Install the Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, then retry the game. The result should be judged by the game’s exact error, not by whether the DxDiag version number changed.
The game still fails after the legacy runtime
- Capture the complete error text and save a DxDiag report.
- Use the game’s own repair or verification feature if its publisher provides one.
- Reinstall the game only when its files appear damaged or incomplete, and back up saves first.
- Check whether the publisher specifies a required graphics driver or Windows compatibility setting.
- Avoid replacing DLLs manually or mixing files copied from another computer.
These steps separate a missing optional library from a damaged game installation, an incompatible driver, or a problem unrelated to DirectX.
Quick Recap
Safety and compatibility rules
- Use Windows Update for the core DirectX platform on Windows 10, 8.1, and 8, and for normal Windows 7 servicing.
- Use the Microsoft End-User Runtime only for legacy side-by-side components requested by an older application.
- Never treat a third-party “DLL download” as an official DirectX installation method.
- Do not expect a graphics-driver installer to install DirectX; drivers are a separate troubleshooting layer.
- Keep the exact Windows edition and architecture in mind when following support instructions. A package for one release is not a universal upgrade for every Windows computer.
- Restart after servicing or runtime installation when Windows asks you to, then verify the result rather than repeating the installer blindly.
Quick checklist
- Open
dxdiagand read DirectX Version. - Run Windows Update and restart if requested.
- On Windows 7, confirm Service Pack 1 and KB2670838 when DirectX 11.1 is required.
- Retry the game and note the exact error.
- For a named legacy D3DX, XAudio, XInput, XACT, or Managed DirectX component, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.
- Use Save All Information… in DxDiag when support needs a report.
