Steam Error Code 80 usually means Steam or the game is still running as a hidden or stale process, even though its window has closed. Steam’s support descriptions cover this condition as a client process that remains visible in Task Manager without opening its interface, or a game that failed to close cleanly and is still reported as running. Start with a complete Steam and computer restart, then end the stuck process on Windows and verify the game’s files. Only repair Steam’s client files after those reversible steps fail.
What Steam Error Code 80 means
The number 80 is not separately defined in the Steam support pages that describe this failure. The closest official explanations are two related launch states. First, Steam may be running in the background while its user interface never appears; its process remains listed in Task Manager. Second, a game may have closed after a silent crash or improper shutdown, leaving Steam convinced that the title is still running. Steam also notes that another Windows user account can have the same game open.

That is why you may see messages such as “Steam is already running,” “Failed to start game (app already running),” or a game that does nothing when you click Play. In most cases this is a process or launch-state problem, not evidence of a failed graphics card, hard drive, or other hardware. Hardware and driver problems can still prevent a launch, so they are addressed after the stuck-process checks.

Work through the sections in order. A restart or file verification is safer than deleting client files, and it also gives you a clear way to identify which layer is failing.

1. Exit Steam completely and restart the computer
- Close any open game windows.
- In Steam, open the Steam menu and choose Exit. Do not merely click the window’s X if Steam remains in the notification area.
- Wait a few seconds. If Steam asks you to wait for a game or download, allow that operation to finish or cancel it normally.
- Restart the computer. Steam recommends restarting both Steam and the computer because a reboot clears temporary system states and caches and releases file or process locks.
- Open Steam from the normal shortcut and wait for it to finish signing in and updating. Launch the affected game once.
If the game starts after this step, the cause was a temporary process or lock. If the same message returns, leave Steam closed and continue with the process check below instead of repeatedly clicking Play.
2. End a stuck process on Windows
Find and close the game process
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- On the Processes tab, look for the game’s name, its executable name, or a launcher associated with the title. Expand grouped entries when necessary.
- Select the entry, choose End task (or End Process on an older Windows build), and confirm.
- Also check for a second copy of the game or a remaining Steam process if Steam’s interface is not opening. End only processes you can identify as belonging to Steam or the affected game.
- Wait a few seconds, start Steam, and test the title.
A game can have more than one helper process. If the main process closes but a helper remains, end the remaining game-related entries and try again. Do not terminate unrelated Windows services simply because they use CPU or memory.
If Windows will not close it
A process that refuses to end may be holding a file or waiting on a driver. Do not force-delete game files while it is active. Restart Windows and test again. If the process reappears immediately after login, note its name; that information is useful when checking overlays, security software, and the game developer’s support instructions.

macOS and Linux
The Windows Task Manager steps do not apply to macOS or Linux. Restart the computer first, then open Steam and test the game. If the title is still reported as running, use the operating system’s normal process viewer only if you are comfortable identifying the game process; otherwise, perform another clean restart and move to file verification. A forced process kill can lose unsaved data.
3. Verify the game’s installed files
Use this step when Steam opens but one game still will not launch, or when ending the process did not clear the “already running” state. Steam compares local files with the expected installation and replaces damaged or missing game files.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game. You can also select the game, click the gear icon, and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish before launching the game. Steam says verification may take several minutes.
One or more failed checks can be normal because local configuration files may intentionally differ from the files distributed by Steam. The useful result is whether Steam downloads replacements and whether the next launch succeeds. If verification repeatedly finds the same files, check available disk space, security software quarantine logs, and the game’s own support page before deleting anything manually.

4. Check beta participation and other user sessions
Opt out of the Steam client beta
- Open Steam and select Steam > Settings.
- Choose Interface.
- Under Client Beta Participation, select No beta chosen.
- Restart Steam when prompted, then test the game.
Beta client code can change how processes close or how the library reports launch status. Opting out is reversible: you can rejoin a beta later after the stable client works.
Sign out other computer users
Steam’s game-launch guidance says the title may still be running under another operating-system account. On Windows, use Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose Sign out for accounts you control, or ask the other user to close Steam and the game. A shared family computer, remote session, or fast-user-switching session can leave a game process active even though it is absent from your desktop. After all accounts are signed out, log in again and launch the game.
5. Remove common launch conflicts
Once stale processes and damaged files are ruled out, check software that can block or inject into a game. Change one item at a time so you know which change affects the result.

- Update Windows. Install pending operating-system updates, restart, and test.
- Update hardware drivers. Graphics, audio, chipset, network, and storage drivers can affect game startup. Use the hardware maker’s official support channel and select the driver for your exact model and Windows edition.
- Temporarily close overlays and recording tools. Exit game overlays, screen recorders, RGB utilities, performance tuners, and similar nonessential software. Re-enable them individually after the game works.
- Check antivirus and firewall behavior. Follow your security vendor’s documented, temporary troubleshooting procedure. Do not leave protection disabled while browsing or downloading, and restore the normal rules after the test.
- Pause proxy, cleaner, and performance-booster utilities. These can lock files or alter network and process settings. Close them through their own interfaces rather than deleting their folders.
- Compare the game with its system requirements. Confirm the required Windows version, processor, memory, graphics feature level, storage space, and supporting software. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee that every overlay or mod will work.
If the game launches after one of these changes, restore items one by one until you identify the conflict. Keep the conflicting utility closed during play or update it through its vendor’s supported method.

Use client repair only when Steam’s own interface fails to open, several games are affected, and restarting, process cleanup, beta opt-out, and conflict checks have not helped. The operation below is more invasive than verifying one game.

Check Compatibility settings for Steam
- Locate the Steam installation folder. The usual Windows path is
C:Program Files (x86)Steam, although you may have chosen another drive or folder. - Right-click
steam.exeand choose Properties. - Open the Compatibility tab.
- Ensure compatibility mode and other forced compatibility options are unchecked unless you deliberately need one for a documented reason.
- Select Apply, then OK, and launch
steam.exefrom the folder.
Forced compatibility settings can make the client start under a different Windows behavior than the one it was installed for. If Steam opens normally afterward, use the shortcut again and test the game.

Refresh Steam’s client files without removing your library
- Exit Steam completely. Confirm that no Steam process remains in Task Manager.
- Open the Steam installation folder.
- Keep the
steamappsfolder andsteam.exe. Thesteamappsfolder contains the installed game data that you want Steam to rediscover. - Remove the other Steam client files from that folder, following Steam’s current client-troubleshooting directions. Do not delete
steamappsorsteam.exe. - Run
steam.exe. Steam will download fresh client files and rebuild its installation around the existing library.
Steam states that reinstalling into the same location preserves installed games. An uninstall performed by another method can remove game and userdata content, so do not use Windows uninstall or delete the entire Steam folder unless you have confirmed backups and understand what will be removed. If your library is on another drive, make a note of that library location before changing the client.
7. Know when to escalate
Contact the game developer for a title-specific failure
Use the game’s Steam Library Support tab when Steam launches correctly but one title still reports that it is running or closes immediately. Include the exact message, your Windows or Linux distribution or macOS version, whether verification replaced files, and the name of any process that would not close. The developer can address game-specific launchers, anti-cheat components, configuration files, and known patches that Steam cannot repair.
Use a local IT specialist for computer-specific problems
Seek local technical help when multiple unrelated applications fail, Windows itself reports file or driver errors, the computer restarts or freezes, or you cannot safely identify processes and account sessions. Steam recommends a local IT specialist for advanced computer-specific troubleshooting. Bring the computer’s model, operating-system edition, driver version, and the steps that already worked or failed.

What to record before asking for help
- The exact wording of the Steam message and whether it appears for one game or every game.
- Your operating system and edition, plus whether Steam client beta participation is enabled.
- Whether a full Steam and computer restart changed the behavior.
- The game executable or Steam process name seen in Task Manager, if applicable.
- The result of Verify integrity of game files, including whether files were redownloaded.
- Recent Windows, driver, antivirus, overlay, proxy, or cleaner changes.
- Whether another operating-system account may still be logged in.
This information separates a stale process from a damaged installation or a wider system conflict, reducing the chance that you will be asked to repeat safe steps or reinstall unnecessarily.
