Check compatibility before downloading anything
GriefDefender is not one universal file for every Minecraft server type. Choose the build that matches the server software and Minecraft/API version. The Bukkit path is the normal installation route for Paper and Spigot.

The GitHub README has listed Java 8 for the Bukkit version, but that note may be outdated. Check the current GriefDefender and server documentation against the Java runtime used by your Minecraft version before changing Java. The current GriefDefender release number and release date are not established here, so download the current file shown by the official listing rather than relying on an old filename.
What you need before installation
- A server directory you can edit, including its
pluginsfolder andserver.properties. - A Paper or Spigot server that starts normally without GriefDefender.
- LuckPerms v5 for Bukkit. GriefDefender requires LuckPerms; another permissions plugin does not satisfy that dependency.
- The GriefDefender jar from its current Spigot listing, matched to the Bukkit platform.
- Permission to stop and start the server. Never edit plugin configuration while the server is writing files.
- A recent backup of the server directory, especially world folders,
server.properties, thepluginsdirectory and any existing GriefDefender data.
Use a staging copy or an empty test world for the first launch if the server is already populated. A claim-protection plugin can affect how players build, interact with containers and modify terrain, so testing with a small group is safer than changing a live public world without warning.

Install GriefDefender on Paper or Spigot
1. Stop the server and make a backup
Stop the Minecraft process cleanly from the server console or hosting panel. Wait until the console confirms that saving and shutdown are complete. Copy the server files to a separate backup location. If the server is managed by a host, use its file manager or SFTP access and preserve the existing directory structure.
2. Install LuckPerms v5 for Bukkit
Download the current LuckPerms build for Bukkit and place its jar in the server’s plugins/ directory. GriefDefender supports LuckPerms version 5 only. Do not place multiple LuckPerms jars in the directory, and remove an obsolete duplicate before starting the server.
If your server runs a fork or a compatibility mode, confirm that it is actually exposing the Bukkit plugin API. A jar intended for Sponge, Fabric or another loader will not satisfy a Bukkit installation.
3. Add the GriefDefender jar
Download GriefDefender from the current Spigot listing and copy the Bukkit jar into the same plugins/ directory. Keep the original filename unless your host specifically requires a naming convention. Do not unzip the jar and do not put it in a nested folder such as plugins/GriefDefender/; the jar itself belongs directly in plugins/.
Check that the file is for Bukkit/Paper/Spigot, not a Sponge or a Patreon-only mod build. A server can appear to start while silently skipping an incompatible file, so platform matching matters more than the filename alone.
4. Start once and verify the load
Start the server and watch the console from the beginning of the boot sequence. Look for a successful enable message for both LuckPerms and GriefDefender. The exact wording changes by release, but the important result is that neither plugin is reported as missing, disabled or failed to load.

- If LuckPerms loads but GriefDefender reports a missing dependency, stop the server and re-check that the LuckPerms jar is the Bukkit v5 build.
- If GriefDefender is ignored, check that the jar is directly inside
plugins/and that you downloaded a Bukkit build. - If the console reports a Java or API error, verify the server version, the plugin build and the Java runtime before trying another file.
Once the startup messages show that GriefDefender has loaded, stop the server again. The first launch normally creates the plugin’s data and configuration directories; editing those files while the process is running risks having your changes overwritten.
5. Disable vanilla spawn protection
Open server.properties while the server is stopped and set:
spawn-protection=0Save the file and restart the server after the remaining configuration is ready. Vanilla spawn protection is checked before GriefDefender in relevant interactions. If it remains enabled, players can be blocked near the world spawn even when a GriefDefender claim or permission should allow the action. Setting it to zero lets GriefDefender make the protection decision.
This setting removes the built-in radius protection; it does not make spawn unprotected. Create a GriefDefender claim or apply another deliberate protection rule around spawn if that area should remain restricted.
Configure files and permissions
Find the GriefDefender configuration
After the first successful start, look for a folder named GriefDefender. Depending on the platform and build, it is under the server’s configuration area or inside the plugins directory. The generated folder is the authoritative location for the files used by your installation; do not create a second folder with a similar name.
Stop the server before changing a file. Make one change at a time, retain a backup of the original, and restart to test. Configuration keys and defaults can change between releases, so use the comments in the generated files and the documentation for your exact build rather than copying an older configuration wholesale.

Grant ordinary players the basic user node
Players receive no GriefDefender claiming rights by default. In LuckPerms, grant the player group:
griefdefender.user.*Apply this to the group that should be able to use normal GriefDefender features. If you use several groups, grant it to the intended member group rather than to every account individually. Verify the node is assigned in the world or context where players will claim; a permission limited to a different world will not help in the target world.

Staff who must manage GriefDefender need both:
griefdefender.admin.*
griffdefender.user.*The second line is intentionally the same user node granted to ordinary players. Administration permissions do not replace the user permissions. Correct the spelling when entering the node: it is griefdefender.user.*, not griffdefender.user.*. (Use the exact first line shown above in your permission manager.)
Because wildcard permissions are broad, give the admin group only to trusted staff. If your policy requires narrower access, use the individual nodes documented for your GriefDefender release instead of assuming that an undocumented node behaves as expected.
Complete the first in-game test
After restarting with spawn-protection=0 and the permission groups assigned, join with a normal test account. Test in a disposable area rather than on an important build.

griefdefender.user.*. - Use the claim workflow documented for the installed GriefDefender release and create a small claim.
- Log out or switch to a second account that does not have the user node.
- Attempt a representative protected action, such as placing or breaking a block inside the claim, and confirm that the protection response is enforced.
- Test a permitted action outside the claim so you can distinguish claim protection from a general server restriction.
- Repeat the check with a staff account containing both the admin and user nodes.
The exact claim tool, command names and interface can vary by release and platform. Use the commands shown by the installed version’s documentation or in-game help rather than relying on syntax from a different version.

Sponge installation
Sponge is a separate installation path. The supported versions identified for GriefDefender are Sponge 1.12.2 and Sponge 1.16.5; do not infer support for another Sponge release from the existence of a similarly named jar.
Match the LuckPerms build to the Sponge API
- For Sponge API 8 or API 9, use the latest LuckPerms release for that API level.
- For Sponge API 7, use LuckPerms v5.3.98.
Install the GriefDefender build intended for Sponge through the official distribution channel. The Sponge download path is not a single fixed link, and one hosting guide directs users to the GriefDefender Discord for downloads, so verify that the file is authentic and matches your Sponge version before uploading it.
Start the server and inspect the console for both LuckPerms and GriefDefender. Stop before editing generated configuration. The same principles apply: players need the user permissions, staff need user plus admin permissions, and you should test claims in a disposable area first. Sponge’s configuration layout and command syntax can differ from Bukkit’s, so do not copy a Bukkit configuration file into a Sponge installation.
Forge, NeoForge and Fabric: what the listing means
GriefDefender builds for Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are listed as Patreon-only. A Bukkit jar will not convert a modded server into a supported GriefDefender installation. If you have access to one of those builds, follow the platform-specific installation instructions supplied with that build, including its loader and Minecraft-version requirements. If you do not, use the supported Paper, Spigot or Sponge path instead of placing unrelated jars in the server directory.

“GriefDefender failed to load” or it never appears
- Confirm the jar is directly in
plugins/and is not still compressed or nested. - Confirm LuckPerms v5 for Bukkit is installed and loads first.
- Check that the jar matches Paper/Spigot rather than Sponge, Fabric or another loader.
- Read the first error in the console, not only the final shutdown line. A Java or API mismatch often causes later messages that look unrelated.
- Remove duplicate or outdated copies, restore the backup if a partial configuration was generated, and try again with the current build.
Players cannot claim anything
- Verify that the player’s effective permissions include
griefdefender.user.*. - Check the permission context: a world-specific or temporary assignment may not apply in the world being tested.
- Confirm that
spawn-protection=0is saved in the active server’sserver.properties, then restart. - Make sure the test is not being performed inside another plugin’s protected region or a server area with separate build restrictions.
- Use the installed release’s help output to confirm the claim procedure rather than assuming that a command from another platform is valid.
Staff still receive “no permission”
Assign both griefdefender.admin.* and griefdefender.user.* to the staff group. Check for an explicit negative permission, a higher-priority group, or a world context that overrides the assignment. Reconnect after changing permissions if your permission manager does not refresh a player’s session immediately.
Actions fail only near spawn
This pattern usually indicates vanilla spawn protection rather than a GriefDefender claim. Stop the server, set spawn-protection=0, save, and restart. Then create the protection you actually want around spawn with GriefDefender or another intentional rule.

The configuration keeps reverting
Stop the server before editing. A running server may write its in-memory values over your file during a reload or shutdown. Edit the generated GriefDefender folder, keep the syntax and indentation already present, and restart to apply the change. If a key is not present in your release, do not invent it; consult that release’s documentation.

Check all three version axes: Sponge release, Sponge API level and LuckPerms build. GriefDefender’s listed Sponge support is limited to 1.12.2 and 1.16.5, and API 7 specifically calls for LuckPerms v5.3.98. A jar built for another API can load incompletely or fail during startup.
Updating, moving or removing GriefDefender
Before an update
- Read the release notes for the target GriefDefender build and check its Minecraft, platform and Java requirements.
- Back up worlds, the
GriefDefenderdata folder,server.properties, LuckPerms data and the existing jar. - Stop the server cleanly. Do not overwrite a jar while the server is running.
After replacing the jar
Start the server and confirm that LuckPerms and GriefDefender both enable without errors. Check a test claim with a normal user and an administrator. If the new release generates new configuration files, compare them with your backup and migrate settings deliberately rather than replacing the entire folder blindly.
Removing the plugin
Stop the server, remove or move the GriefDefender jar out of plugins/, and retain the data folder and backup until you have decided how existing claims should be handled. Removing the jar does not automatically make a safe migration plan for protected builds; document the change and test the world on a copy first.
Production checklist
- Paper or Spigot is current enough for the selected Bukkit build.
- LuckPerms v5 loads successfully.
- The matching GriefDefender jar is directly in
plugins/. - The console shows a successful GriefDefender enable message.
spawn-protection=0is present in the activeserver.properties.- The generated
GriefDefenderfolder is backed up. - Players who should claim have
griefdefender.user.*. - Staff who administer claims have both
griefdefender.admin.*andgriefdefender.user.*. - A normal user, an unprivileged account and a staff account have each been tested in a disposable area.
- The server team knows which platform, Minecraft version, Java runtime and GriefDefender build are installed.
Once those checks pass, GriefDefender is installed in the way its supported Bukkit workflow expects: LuckPerms supplies the permissions, GriefDefender evaluates claims, and vanilla spawn protection no longer intercepts actions before the plugin can evaluate them.
