To install a custom vehicle on a FiveM server, place the vehicle’s resource folder inside the server-data resources/ directory, keep its fxmanifest.lua intact, preserve the package’s streamed assets and metadata layout, then load it with ensure resource-name. Run refresh first if the server does not recognize a newly added folder.
There is no universal vehicle package layout. The creator’s README determines the model name, required files, dependencies, and any game-build or configuration requirements. The procedure below shows the reliable FiveM workflow while identifying the points that must remain package-specific.

How FiveM custom vehicles are packaged
FiveM treats add-ons as resources: folders containing files that the server can start, stop, and restart. Cfx.re describes a resource as a collection that can include client scripts, server scripts, and streaming assets. A vehicle download is therefore not installed by copying individual files into the GTA V installation. It is installed as a resource under the server’s server-data directory.

The resource folder must contain a manifest named fxmanifest.lua. That manifest tells FiveM how to parse the resource, which game it targets, and which additional files the game should mount. The usual streamed assets live in a stream/ directory, while metadata files may need explicit data_file declarations. Those two mechanisms are related but not interchangeable.
Read the package instructions before changing anything. The name of the folder is not necessarily the vehicle’s in-game spawn name, and a resource can depend on other resources or on a particular server configuration. Cfx.re’s resource guidance recommends checking dependencies and usage terms before installing a download (Introduction to Resources; Finding Resources).
Prepare the vehicle package
1. Back up the server configuration
Before adding a resource, save a copy of server.cfg and note the current resource state. If the new package causes a startup error, you can remove its ensure line and return to the previous configuration without guessing which change caused the problem.

2. Unpack and inspect, rather than blindly copying
Extract the download to a temporary location and look for:
- A README or creator-provided installation document.
- The actual resource folder containing
fxmanifest.lua. - The documented vehicle model or spawn name.
- Metadata files and any supplied
data_fileinstructions. - Dependencies, required scripts, or a specified game build.
- Terms of use and, for a paid package, the seller’s identity and support channel.
A compressed archive may contain an extra wrapper folder. For example, the path might initially be download-name/vehicle-resource/fxmanifest.lua. The resource is vehicle-resource, not the outer archive directory, unless the creator explicitly says otherwise.
3. Check the package’s expected file inventory
Do not delete unfamiliar files simply because they are not models or textures. Vehicle resources can include several kinds of streamed assets and metadata. Conversely, do not invent missing files from another vehicle package. If the README says a file is optional, follow that instruction; if it lists a dependency, install or enable that dependency before testing the vehicle.

Place the resource in the server-data tree
1. Find the correct resources/ directory
Open the server-data folder used by the running instance and locate resources/. Put the complete vehicle resource folder somewhere inside that directory. Cfx.re supports both direct folders and category folders, commonly written with brackets, such as:
server-data/

└── other-resource/
The bracketed directory is only a category container. FiveM parses the folder that actually contains fxmanifest.lua. Keep the manifest inside example_vehicle, not only in [cars]. A common “resource not found” error comes from nesting the resource one directory too deep.
2. Preserve the folder name and case
Use a simple resource name without spaces unless the creator supplied a different name and your configuration already references it. The name used in ensure resource-name must match the resource directory exactly. On case-sensitive filesystems, capitalization differences can matter.
3. Keep the manifest at the resource root
When you open the resource folder, fxmanifest.lua should be immediately visible. If it is inside another subfolder, FiveM will not parse the package as the resource you intended. Cfx.re’s resource documentation explains the directory and manifest requirements (Cfx.re resource introduction).
Check and understand fxmanifest.lua
Use the supplied manifest when one is included
The creator’s manifest may contain file lists, client or server scripts, dependencies, and data-file registrations. Keep those entries unless the creator’s instructions tell you to edit them. Replacing the file with a two-line template can make the resource appear to start while preventing the vehicle’s metadata from loading.

game 'gta5'
gta5 identifies the target game, and fx_version identifies the manifest format. The current resource-manifest reference documents these declarations and the other directives available to resource authors (Resource Manifest reference).
Data files are package-specific
Some vehicle metadata must be registered with a data_file declaration. A manifest might contain an entry in this form:
data_file 'VEHICLE_METADATA_FILE' 'vehicles.meta'
This is an example of the syntax, not a universal line to paste into every car resource. The file name and data-file type must correspond to the files actually supplied by the creator. The official data-file reference lists VEHICLE_METADATA_FILE among the supported types (Cfx.re data files). If the package already contains the correct declarations, do not duplicate them.

Do not use the deprecated legacy filename
Older resources may contain __resource.lua. Cfx.re identifies that filename as deprecated; a modern package should use fxmanifest.lua. If a download has only the legacy file, check the creator’s documentation before converting it, because the old manifest may use syntax or declarations that need more than a filename change.
Preserve the streamed asset layout
The stream/ folder is where a resource commonly places game assets that FiveM should stream to clients. Cfx.re’s asset tutorial demonstrates the general pattern of putting streamed files in a resource’s stream folder and then enabling that resource in the server configuration (Placing Assets and Creating Simple Map Mods). That tutorial uses map assets, so it establishes the resource pattern rather than a promise that every vehicle has identical filenames or subfolders.
Follow the vehicle package’s own layout for its model, textures, metadata, handling information, audio, and other files. Do not rename files to match a different tutorial. A vehicle can start as a resource while still failing to appear if its expected files have been moved, renamed, or placed outside the paths declared by the manifest.

Enable the vehicle resource on the server
1. Add a persistent ensure entry
Open the server.cfg used by your server and add the resource name:

Replace example_vehicle with the exact folder name that contains fxmanifest.lua. Cfx.re documents ensure as starting a resource if it is stopped and starting it when it is not running (Server Commands).
Put the line in the same configuration file that starts your normal resources. A line in an unused example configuration has no effect on the live server.
2. Rescan after adding a folder while the server is running
If you copied the resource while the server was already online and the console says it cannot find the resource, run:
refresh
ensure example_vehicle
refresh rescans the resources directory and loads resource manifests. Run ensure afterward to start the resource. These commands can be entered in the server console or supplied through the server’s configuration workflow, as documented by Cfx.re.
3. Use the normal lifecycle tool for your administration workflow
A persistent ensure line is appropriate when the vehicle should start on every server boot. Administrators who use txAdmin can also manage resource start, stop, and restart actions from its interface; txAdmin includes resource controls and an in-game vehicle menu (txAdmin documentation). Choose one routine and keep the configuration authoritative so a manual test does not disappear at the next restart.

Test the vehicle in game
1. Confirm the resource start message
Watch the server console after ensure. A successful start message only proves that FiveM loaded the resource manifest and attempted to start it; it does not prove that the model, textures, metadata, or dependencies are correct.
2. Use the documented spawn name
Use the model or spawn name supplied by the creator with your server’s vehicle-spawning resource or administrative workflow. The directory name, display name, and spawn name can be different. If txAdmin is your normal tool, its vehicle menu can be used for the in-game check.
3. Test the functions that matter
- Spawn the vehicle on a client connected to the server.
- Check that the expected model and textures load.
- Enter, drive, and exit the vehicle.
- Test any documented extras or configuration-specific features.
- Have another player connect if the package documentation calls for multiplayer verification.
Do not advertise the installation as successful until the vehicle has been spawned and checked in the actual server environment. The model name, dependencies, and package-specific behavior cannot be established from the generic FiveM documentation alone.

When reporting a problem to the creator, include the resource folder name, the relevant console error, the spawn name you used, and the server configuration entry. Those details distinguish a path problem from a missing dependency or package-specific issue.
Choose a vehicle resource responsibly
Cfx.re points administrators toward the Cfx Marketplace and the FiveM Releases section when looking for resources. Vehicle resources can be free or paid. The important distinction is not price alone but whether the package fits your server and is supported clearly.

Do not assume that a vehicle advertised in a screenshot includes every script, sound, or dependency shown. Compare the listing with the files you actually receive, and retain the purchase information and terms.
Updating or removing a custom vehicle
Update safely
- Stop or disable the current resource through your normal server workflow.
- Back up the existing resource folder and its
server.cfgentry. - Read the new package instructions for changed dependencies, manifest entries, or spawn names.
- Replace the resource files without merging unrelated files from another vehicle.
- Run
refreshif the server is running, thenensure resource-name. - Spawn and test the updated vehicle before declaring the update complete.
Remove it cleanly
Remove or comment out its ensure line, stop the resource through the console or txAdmin, and then delete the resource folder only after you have a backup. Removing the folder while leaving an ensure entry will produce a missing-resource error at the next restart.
