To install Minecraft, first choose the edition for your device and the friends you want to play with. On PC, download the official Minecraft Launcher from Minecraft.net or install it through Microsoft Store, then sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game. On iOS or Android, install it from the App Store or Google Play; on a console, use that console’s official store or game library.
Choose the right edition for your device
Minecraft has two main editions. Java Edition runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Bedrock Edition is available on supported Windows PCs, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. The Windows 10/11 PC product bundles Java and Bedrock, so buyers of that PC product can choose either edition.

Java and Bedrock players cannot simply join each other’s edition-specific worlds. Bedrock supports cross-play among supported Bedrock platforms; Java multiplayer is for Java players. Java is also the PC edition associated with custom servers and extensive mod support, while Bedrock includes controller and touch support.
Check PC requirements before you install
Use the current Java Edition system requirements to check whether your computer is supported. Minecraft’s requirements article, published July 21, 2026, sets the Java minimum performance target at 1080p and 30 FPS on Fast settings; its recommended target is 1080p and 60 FPS on Fancy settings. These are technical targets, not independent benchmark results.

- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs

- Storage listed on the current PC product page: Java requires 2 GB minimum and 4 GB recommended; Bedrock requires 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended.
The requirements article notes that a computer below minimum specifications may still launch the game, but performance and visual quality are not guaranteed. Technical requirements and compatibility can change. The same article lists operating-system requirements; check it rather than assuming an older Windows or macOS version remains supported. Minecraft Help also says that, as of March 2025, Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 is required for Java online play and continued updates through the Launcher.

Do I need to buy Minecraft again on my new computer?
Not if the Microsoft account you sign into is the account that owns the PC game. Download the Launcher, sign in with that account, and look for Minecraft in your library to install it. The PC product listing describes this library-based reinstall route. If you use a different account, the purchase may not appear. Accounts without an owned copy may instead see a demo or purchase option; see the official Minecraft account guide.

Fix common Minecraft Launcher installation problems
If installation through Microsoft Store fails, check that Store is signed into the Microsoft account you intend to use. Minecraft Help also lists the Xbox App and Minecraft.net as alternate Launcher installation routes. If the Minecraft.net installer fails, the Store account may still need to be signed in; check that account and try the supported alternate route. See Minecraft Launcher troubleshooting for current help.
