To install Minecraft mods, use Minecraft: Java Edition, choose a loader that matches both the mod and your game version, then place the mod’s .jar file and every required dependency in that loader profile’s mods folder. A manual Fabric installation gives you direct control; a managed app such as CurseForge can create compatible profiles and install modpacks for you. The instructions below cover both approaches and the most common crash causes.
What you need before installing a mod
Minecraft Java Edition
The documented community-mod workflow is for Minecraft Java Edition. The Bedrock edition uses a different add-on system, so a Java mod file will not install in a Bedrock world. Confirm the edition in the Minecraft Launcher before downloading anything.

Decide which exact game version you intend to run. A mod built for one version may not load on another, even when the game and mod have similar names. Keep the version visible while you download the loader, the mod and its dependencies.
A compatible mod loader
Mods are packaged for a loader family. Common choices are Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The loader selected in your launcher profile must match the label on every mod you install. A Fabric mod does not become a Forge mod by changing its file name, and mixing loader families in one profile commonly prevents launch.

Trusted downloads and backups
Download JAR files only from a source you trust, and read the project’s dependency list before launching. Back up worlds that matter to you before changing a profile. A mod can alter saved data; a backup gives you a way to return to an earlier state if a configuration change goes wrong.
Choose manual installation or a managed profile

Both routes still depend on exact version and loader matching. Automation does not make an incompatible mod compatible; it simply makes profile and file management easier.

1. Confirm the edition and record the target version
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and verify that you own and can start Minecraft Java Edition.
- Write down the exact Minecraft version you want to mod. Use that same value when selecting the Fabric installer and when evaluating every mod download.
- If you already have other profiles, treat the new Fabric profile as a separate environment. Do not assume that a mod from another profile will work here.
2. Install Fabric for that version
Use Fabric’s official installer and select the Minecraft version you recorded. The installer creates a Fabric profile that the Minecraft Launcher can select. Fabric’s player documentation emphasizes that a mod must be made for Fabric, the selected Minecraft version and Java Edition; all three checks matter.
When the installer offers a profile option, leave the launcher profile enabled unless you have a specific reason to manage profiles yourself. Finish the installation, then open the launcher once so it can recognize the new profile.
3. Download the mod and its dependencies
Find a release that explicitly identifies Fabric and your target Minecraft version. Read the project page for required libraries. Fabric documentation notes that the majority of Fabric mods also require Fabric API, which is available through established mod platforms such as Modrinth or CurseForge.

- Download the mod’s JAR file, not a source archive intended for developers.
- Download Fabric API when the project lists it as a requirement, using a Fabric API release compatible with your game version.
- Repeat the dependency check for every additional library named by the project.
- Keep the downloaded files together temporarily so you can identify which JAR belongs to which project.
4. Open the correct mods folder
The folder is inside the Minecraft game directory used by the profile. Use the path for your operating system:

On Windows, press Win+R, enter %appdata%.minecraft, and press Enter. On macOS, in Finder choose Go > Go to Folder, enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft, and press Return. On Linux, enable hidden files in your file manager if necessary and open ~/.minecraft.
If the mods directory does not exist, create a folder named exactly mods in the game directory. A folder named Mod, mods-old or a directory inside another profile will not be scanned by the launcher.
5. Copy the JAR files
Move or copy the downloaded mod JAR and every required dependency JAR into the same mods folder. Leave the files as JAR files; do not unzip them and do not place the download page, a ZIP source archive or a shortcut in the folder.
For a first test, install one mod plus its required libraries. A small initial set makes it clear which project is responsible if the game fails to start.

6. Launch the Fabric profile
- Return to the Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the installation/profile selector and choose the Fabric profile created for your target version.
- Press Play and wait for the game to finish loading.
- Check the title screen or the loader’s mod list, when available, to confirm that the mod was detected.
If the launcher starts a vanilla profile instead, the files in mods will not be loaded. Stop the game, select Fabric explicitly and launch again.
Using Forge, NeoForge or Quilt
The same sequence applies to other loader families, but you must use the installer and profile for the chosen family. Select the exact Minecraft version, install that loader, download releases tagged for that loader, place the JAR files and dependencies in the profile’s mods folder, and launch the matching profile.
- Forge: use Forge-tagged mods and a Forge profile.
- NeoForge: use NeoForge-tagged mods and a NeoForge profile.
- Quilt: use Quilt-tagged mods and a Quilt profile.
Do not combine a Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt profile simply because the mod names look similar. Some projects publish separate files for several loaders; choose the file whose loader tag matches your profile and install any dependencies listed for that file.
Install mods with CurseForge
CurseForge’s Minecraft app provides managed profiles for Vanilla, Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt. Its support documentation describes filtering a profile by Minecraft version and loader, then installing individual mods or a complete modpack.

- Open the Minecraft section of the CurseForge app and create a new profile, or select an existing one.
- Set the profile’s Minecraft version to the version you intend to play.
- Choose the loader family required by the mod or modpack.
- Use the profile’s install controls to add a mod or modpack. Review the displayed dependencies and let the profile install them when prompted.
- Launch Minecraft from that profile, not from an unrelated launcher installation.
For a manual workflow inside a managed profile, CurseForge’s Java guidance allows downloaded JAR files to be placed in that profile’s own mods folder. Do not assume that the global .minecraftmods folder is the one being used: managed profiles can have their own game directories. Open the profile’s folder from the app before copying files.

CurseForge filters reduce the chance of selecting the wrong release, but you should still read each project’s dependency notes and verify that the profile’s loader and Minecraft version remain unchanged after an update.

The launcher has no loader profile
Re-run the installer for the intended Minecraft version and confirm that the launcher profile option was enabled. Restart the launcher after installation. If you use a managed profile, select its loader in the profile settings rather than expecting the standard launcher list to change.
The game opens but the mod is absent
- Confirm that you launched the matching loader profile, not Vanilla.
- Check that the JAR is directly inside the active profile’s
modsfolder. - Verify the file is tagged for your Minecraft version and loader.
- Check the project’s dependency list, especially Fabric API for Fabric projects.
The game crashes immediately
Read the crash report or latest log before deleting files. Look for a named mod, a missing dependency, a version mismatch or a loader error. Remove the last mod you added, then launch with the remaining set. If the crash disappears, add the removed mod back only after checking its release and dependencies.
A reliable isolation method is to move all JARs out of the active mods folder, start with only the loader and required API, and then return mods one at a time or in small groups. Keep a note of each change so you can reproduce the working combination.
A dependency is reported as missing
Return to the project page named in the error and download the dependency release for the same Minecraft version and loader. Place its JAR beside the original mod. A dependency built for another loader is not an equivalent substitute.

The error mentions an incompatible loader or game version
Choose one of two consistent solutions: change the profile to the mod’s supported version, or download a mod release that supports the profile you want to keep. Do not solve this error by renaming the file or placing it in a different folder.

Undo the newest change first. Restore the previously working JAR or profile when you have a backup, then test the update by itself. Updating several mods and the loader at once makes the failing change difficult to identify.
The world will not open after removing a mod
Do not overwrite your only save. Restore the profile and mod that created the world, or open a backup in a separate test profile. A world can depend on blocks or items supplied by a mod, so removing that mod may make the save unsafe to continue using.
Safe download and maintenance habits
Keep profiles separate
Use one profile for each major Minecraft version or modpack. Separate profiles prevent a test JAR from silently affecting a stable installation and make it easier to identify the folder being used.
Record what you install
Keep a simple list of the mod name, release, loader and Minecraft version. Include dependencies such as Fabric API. This record helps you rebuild a profile after a reinstall and gives support volunteers the information they need.
Update deliberately
Before updating, back up worlds and note the current working versions. Update one component at a time, launch a test world, and inspect the log. If an update fails, revert that component instead of repeatedly replacing unrelated files.
Use official project documentation and support channels
Minecraft Support states that modding is not officially supported and cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage. For a crash, consult the loader’s documentation, the mod project’s instructions, its issue tracker or its support channel, and provide the relevant crash report rather than only saying that the game “does not work.”
Removing a mod cleanly
- Close Minecraft and the launcher.
- Back up the world and note the profile’s current mod list.
- Open the active profile’s
modsfolder. - Move the target mod JAR to a temporary backup folder instead of deleting it immediately.
- Remove dependencies that are no longer needed only after checking whether another installed mod uses them.
- Launch the same loader profile and test a copy of the world.
For a managed CurseForge profile, remove the mod through the profile’s content list when possible. For a manual profile, moving the JAR out of the folder provides an easy rollback.
