What a VALORANT black screen on startup means
Riot Games lists “The screen is black when the game is launched” as a VALORANT crash symptom in its Troubleshooting Game Crashes in VALORANT guidance dated May 24, 2026. The symptom does not identify one universal cause. A stale graphics driver, outdated Windows or DirectX components, a forced GPU-control-panel profile, overheating, a Windows display failure, or a Vanguard boot-security restriction can all lead to a launch that produces no visible image.

The safest approach is to match the remedy to the scope of the failure. Do not change BIOS security settings when Windows itself is the problem, and do not begin with Safe Mode if only the VALORANT window is black and the desktop remains usable.

Do this 60-second triage first
- Check whether Windows is responsive. Move the pointer, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, or use Alt + Tab. If another application appears, Windows is running and the issue is probably confined to VALORANT.
- Reset the graphics driver. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen may flicker or beep while Windows reloads the display driver. This is Microsoft’s documented blank-screen shortcut and does not uninstall anything.
- Cycle the output mode. Press Windows + P, press P again to move through the modes, and press Enter. This corrects a mistaken duplicate, extend, second-screen-only or PC-screen-only selection.
- Restart Explorer when a cursor is visible. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer, and choose Restart. If Explorer is not listed, choose Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
If these actions restore the desktop but VALORANT remains black, continue with the game-specific sequence below. If Windows stays blank in other applications or before VALORANT starts, skip to the Windows-wide section.

Fix a VALORANT-only black screen
1. Identify and update the graphics driver
Riot treats a current video driver as a first-line crash-prevention check. To identify the installed GPU without opening the computer, press Windows + R, type dxdiag, press Enter, and open the Display or Render tab. Note the manufacturer and model.
- Download the current driver for that exact model from the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel driver channel.
- Install the package using its standard installation option. Do not use a driver intended for a different GPU family or notebook model.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not insist on a reboot.
- Launch VALORANT before changing several other variables. If the picture returns, the driver was the relevant change; leave the rest of the configuration alone.
Riot’s guidance also calls for current operating-system software. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install pending updates, and restart. DirectX is maintained through Windows components and updates; avoid downloading an unrelated “DirectX fix” from an unofficial site.
2. Remove NVIDIA or AMD profile overrides
Per-game settings in a graphics control panel can override what VALORANT requests. Riot specifically recommends restoring defaults when these profiles interfere.

- NVIDIA: Open NVIDIA Control Panel, find Manage 3D settings and the program profile for VALORANT, then use the option to restore that profile to defaults. If you created a global override, restore the global defaults as well.
- AMD: Open AMD’s graphics-control software, select the VALORANT game profile, and use its reset or restore-defaults command. The exact label can vary by Adrenalin release.
Do not stack a global “maximum performance,” forced anti-aliasing, sharpening, scaling or synchronization setting on top of the game profile while diagnosing the problem. Test with the manufacturer defaults first; you can add a deliberate setting later and identify whether it causes the black screen.
3. Start with conservative in-game graphics
If you can reach the menu after the driver and profile reset, open VALORANT’s video-quality controls and begin with Riot’s low-stability baseline:
- Set material, texture, detail and user-interface quality to Low.
- Disable VSync, anti-aliasing, bloom, distortion and first-person shadows.
Apply the changes, exit the game normally, and launch it again. These settings are a diagnostic starting point, not a guarantee that every crash is graphics-related. Once launches are reliable, raise one option at a time so a return of the black screen identifies the setting that needs to stay off.

Check heat, power and airflow
Riot also advises checking heat and ventilation when crashes continue. A GPU or CPU that becomes unstable under load can leave the game window black even though Windows remains active.
- Connect the computer to its normal AC power source. On a laptop, test while plugged in rather than on a battery-saver profile.
- In Windows, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and select the High performance plan if it is available. Some systems expose an equivalent performance mode in the manufacturer utility.
- Make sure desktop intake and exhaust vents are not against a wall, carpet or fabric. Keep a laptop’s underside and side vents clear.
- Turn the computer off, unplug it, and remove visible dust from vents and filters. Short bursts from a compressed-air duster are the directly relevant physical method; hold a fan still while blowing so it does not spin freely.
- Retry VALORANT after the system has cooled. If the black screen appears only after several minutes of play, record that timing for support instead of repeatedly force-closing the game.
Cleaning airflow can remove one source of instability, but it cannot repair a failing GPU, damaged power supply or defective cooling fan. Stop and seek hardware service if you smell burning, hear a failing fan or see visual corruption outside VALORANT.
When Vanguard is the reason VALORANT will not launch
Vanguard restrictions are different from an ordinary rendering failure. Riot says a restriction can prevent VALORANT from launching and display a pop-up stating which requirement must be enabled. The prompt may concern Secure Boot, virtualization-based security (VBS), IOMMU or a motherboard-firmware update.

- Read the complete VAN message and copy its code or wording.
- Use Riot’s instructions for that specific restriction and the official support documentation for your motherboard model.
- If a firmware update is required, verify the exact board model and revision, connect reliable power, and follow the manufacturer’s update procedure. A wrong firmware image can make a system unbootable.
- Restart Windows and test VALORANT after each required change.
Do not disable Secure Boot, VBS or IOMMU merely to bypass a prompt. Those features are security controls, and changing them can create a different problem. If there is no VAN message, complete the driver, Windows, profile and heat checks before investigating firmware.

When other applications, the taskbar or the sign-in screen are also affected, treat this as a Windows display problem rather than a VALORANT setting.

- If a cursor appears, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager.
- Install pending Windows updates when you can reach Settings.
- Enter Windows Safe Mode through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then choose the startup option for Safe Mode. On Windows 10, the equivalent entry is under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- In Safe Mode, update the display driver from the official GPU channel. If the black screen began immediately after a driver update, use Device Manager’s display-adapter properties to roll that driver back when the rollback option is available.
- Restart normally and test the desktop before launching VALORANT.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment, not a permanent gaming mode. If Windows is still blank after the driver is updated or rolled back, document whether the failure appears before sign-in, only after sign-in, or only when VALORANT starts; that distinction helps Microsoft or the PC manufacturer isolate the display path.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Changing everything at once: Updating Windows, changing BIOS settings and installing multiple driver packages at the same time removes the evidence that identifies the cause. Make one controlled change, restart, and test.
- Using an unofficial driver mirror: A package for the wrong model can introduce another black screen. Use the GPU maker’s official channel.
- Flashing firmware casually: BIOS or motherboard-firmware changes belong only in the Vanguard branch, and only when Riot’s prompt requires them.
- Assuming a black window proves Vanguard is broken: Vanguard restrictions normally include a VAN code or security prompt. Without one, start with graphics and Windows checks.
- Repeating force-shutdowns: Hold the power button only when Windows cannot respond. Repeated hard shutdowns can interrupt updates and make recovery more difficult.

When to contact Riot Support
If the documented sequence does not restore the image, stop adding random launch options or registry edits. Open Riot Support’s ticket flow and include the exact time the screen turns black, whether Windows remains usable, whether audio continues, the GPU model, Windows edition, driver version, any VAN code and which steps changed the behavior. Attach the logs requested by the support form. A precise timeline is more useful than saying only that “the game crashes.”

For a VALORANT-only black screen, update the official GPU driver, Windows and DirectX components, restore NVIDIA or AMD profile defaults, and test Riot’s low graphics baseline. For a blank desktop, reset the display driver and output mode first, then use Safe Mode to update or roll back the display driver. Treat a VAN security prompt as a separate Vanguard and firmware matter, and change those settings only when Riot and the motherboard manufacturer require it.
