To install a Modrinth mod on a Minecraft Java dedicated server, first match the mod to the server’s Minecraft version and mod loader, install that loader, place the server-side JAR files and their dependencies in the instance’s mods directory, then restart and read the logs. For a complete modpack, deploy its .mrpack file with a server-capable installer instead of copying the pack’s client files by hand.

Decide what you are installing
There are two different jobs that are often described as “installing a Modrinth mod.” The correct method depends on whether you need one project or an entire pack.

Do not treat a modpack as a folder of arbitrary client files. A dedicated server needs only the files marked for server use, while each player’s client may need a different set.
Check the server version and loader first
Write down the exact Minecraft Java Edition version the server will run. Then identify the loader already installed, or choose one before downloading anything. Modrinth projects can target Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt, and those loaders are not interchangeable.

- Version: The mod’s Minecraft version must match the server version. A file built for one patch can fail on another patch even when the numbers look closely related.
- Loader: The project must list the loader that the server runs. Do not put a Fabric build into a Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt installation, or mix loader families in one instance.
- Edition: This procedure is for Minecraft Java Edition dedicated servers. A Java mod JAR is not a Bedrock add-on.
- Java runtime: Use the Java runtime required by the chosen Minecraft server and loader. If the loader itself does not start, solve that prerequisite before diagnosing a mod.
Check the project’s version and loader filters on Modrinth before downloading. For a pack, check the pack’s Minecraft and loader metadata rather than assuming that every included project supports the version you want.
Prepare a safe server instance
- Stop the server. Never replace mod files while the server is actively writing world data or loading classes.
- Back up the world and configuration. Keep a copy outside the live instance so a bad mod or configuration change can be rolled back.
- Record the current loader and launch method. A local installation, Docker container, and hosting panel expose different file paths and restart controls.
- Confirm persistent storage. In Docker or managed hosting, make sure the directory containing the world,
mods, and configuration is persistent; otherwise a container replacement can remove your changes.
Keep one known-good copy of the server files until the new installation has started successfully and players can connect.

The loader is the software that discovers and initializes loader-compatible mods. Install the dedicated-server loader first, start the server once to verify that it runs, stop it, and only then add mods.
Fabric
For a Fabric server, select Fabric builds of every compatible mod. The majority of Fabric mods also require Fabric API. Download the API from a trusted source and place its server-compatible JAR in the same mods directory. A server that starts with Fabric but stops while loading a project commonly has a missing or incompatible API version.

Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt
Use the loader named by the project or pack. Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, and Fabric builds are separate artifacts; installing the wrong one is not a fallback. If a pack specifies a loader version, keep that version aligned with the pack instead of upgrading it independently during the first installation.
Verify the empty loader installation
Start the server with no third-party mods. The console should identify the expected loader and Minecraft version without a loader error. Shut it down cleanly before copying files.
Install individual Modrinth mods
This path is appropriate when you are assembling a small collection rather than deploying a complete pack.
- Open each project’s version list. Select a file whose Minecraft version and loader both match the server. Do not rely only on the project name; one project can publish separate files for different loaders and patches.
- Read the dependency list. Download every required dependency, including Fabric API when the Fabric project requires it. Optional dependencies should be installed only when you understand what feature they enable.
- Check side information. Keep files intended only for a client off the dedicated server. A server-side or both-sides file can be considered for the server; a client-only file belongs in each player’s client instance.
- Download the JAR files. Preserve the original filenames so that identifying a dependency or a version mismatch in the log is easier.
- Open the server instance directory. Find or create the instance’s
modsdirectory. In a local server it is alongside the server’s world and configuration; in Docker or a hosting panel it is inside the persistent server data directory exposed by that environment. - Copy the files. Upload the server-required mod JARs and their required dependencies into
mods. Do not copy every JAR from a client mod folder automatically. - Start the server. Watch the console from the first line of loader initialization through world loading. A normal startup should not report a missing dependency, unsupported loader, or incompatible Minecraft version.
- Test with a matching client. Every player’s client must have the client-side files required by the mod set and the same relevant Minecraft, loader, and mod versions. A client-only visual or interface mod does not belong on the server, but a player may still need it locally.
Adding a second mod does not change the basic process: verify its metadata, add its required dependencies, place only the server-appropriate files in mods, and restart.

Understand server-side and client-side metadata
Modrinth pack metadata distinguishes how a file is installed on each side. The .mrpack specification uses side values such as required, optional, and unsupported, and records server and client installation separately.

Client-only performance, graphics, interface, or input projects are common examples of files that should remain on players’ installations. Installing one on a dedicated server can produce a side error rather than adding a useful feature. Conversely, removing a required server project can prevent the world from loading or make a connecting client fail its compatibility check.

Install a complete Modrinth modpack from a .mrpack
A .mrpack is a ZIP-format package designed to describe a modpack rather than duplicate every downloaded file. It contains modrinth.index.json, file download records, dependency declarations, and optional override directories. A server-capable installer reads that index, retrieves the declared files, and applies the appropriate overrides.
Choose a server-capable installer
Modrinth identifies Modrinth Servers, mrpack-install, and the itzg/minecraft-server Docker image as options for using a Modrinth modpack in a server-side environment. Select the option that matches your administration model:

- Managed server: Use the provider’s Modrinth or
.mrpackimport workflow. Confirm that the service supports the pack’s Minecraft version and loader before replacing an existing instance. - Local or scripted server: Use a server-capable
mrpackinstaller. Point it at the persistent server directory and the pack file, then review the generated files before starting the server. - Docker: Configure the
itzg/minecraft-serverimage or another image that explicitly supports Modrinth packs. Keep the server data directory mounted persistently and make the pack import part of the container’s documented configuration rather than copying files into a temporary container layer.
Pack installation procedure
- Stop the existing instance and back up its world and configuration.
- Obtain the pack’s
.mrpackfile from the pack’s Modrinth release page. Use the release that matches the Minecraft version and loader you intend to run. - Check the pack metadata. Confirm the declared Minecraft version, loader, dependencies, and side settings before importing it.
- Run the server-capable installer against the persistent server directory. The installer should read
modrinth.index.jsonand fetch the listed files instead of treating the archive as an ordinary client folder. - Review the resulting layout. Confirm that server-required mods are in
mods, the expected loader files are present, and configuration overrides were written to the instance. - Start the server and inspect the log. Stop immediately if the loader, Minecraft version, or a required dependency is reported as incompatible.
- Give players the matching client pack. A server import does not automatically install the client half on every player’s computer. Players need the corresponding client installation and any required client-side files.
How overrides work in a modpack
Pack overrides provide files such as configuration, scripts, or other instance data that are not represented as ordinary downloaded mods. The .mrpack format can include regular overrides and server-specific overrides. Server overrides are applied after regular overrides, so a pack can supply a shared baseline and then replace or add files specifically for the dedicated server.
This ordering is useful when the server needs different configuration from a client. It also means that a server override can intentionally supersede a value supplied by the common pack. If you edit an overridden file manually, a later reinstallation or pack update may replace your edit; keep local changes documented and compare them before updating.

Always restart after adding, removing, or replacing mod files. The loader resolves dependencies and class compatibility during startup, so a server that was already running cannot reliably reflect a file change.
- Missing dependency: The log names a required project that is absent. Download the compatible release for the same Minecraft version and loader, place it in
mods, and restart. - Wrong loader: The log says a Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt component is unsupported. Remove the wrong build and install the project release for the server’s loader; do not mix loaders.
- Version mismatch: The log identifies a different Minecraft patch or an incompatible dependency version. Replace the file with a release whose metadata matches the server and the rest of the mod set.
- Client-only error: A file reports that it cannot run on a dedicated server. Remove it from the server and install it only on player clients if the project supports that use.
- Pack import appears incomplete: Check that the installer was given the
.mrpackfile and a persistent server directory, not an extracted client cache or a temporary container path. Verify thatmodrinth.index.jsonwas processed and that server overrides were applied. - Server starts but a feature is missing: Recheck optional side metadata and dependencies. An optional file may not have been selected, while a client-only file may correctly have been excluded from the server.
- Players cannot connect: Compare the client and server Minecraft versions, loaders, and required mod versions. A server can start successfully while a client with a different mod set is rejected at connection time.
Keep the first startup log from each change. It shows the exact filename and version that triggered a failure, which is more useful than deleting several files at once and guessing which one mattered.

Updating, removing, and rolling back mods
Updating an individual mod
- Stop the server and back up the world and configuration.
- Check that the new release supports the server’s Minecraft version and loader.
- Read its dependency changes before replacing the old JAR.
- Remove the old file so two releases of the same project are not loaded together.
- Copy the new JAR, start the server, and review the complete startup log.
Updating a modpack
Use the pack’s updated .mrpack metadata with the same server-capable tool. Compare server overrides and configuration before accepting changes, because the pack may deliberately replace server-specific files. Keep the previous pack and a world backup until the new version has been tested.

Stop the server, remove the JAR, and check whether other projects list it as a required dependency. A world may also contain data created by the removed project; retain a backup before testing the removal. If the server fails on startup, restore the previous file set rather than continuing to modify the live world.
Installation checklist

- The exact Minecraft version is recorded.
- The installed loader is known and matches every selected project.
- The server was started successfully before third-party mods were added.
- Every required dependency is present; Fabric installations commonly require Fabric API.
- Only server-supported files are in the server’s

- A modpack was installed from its
.mrpackmetadata with a server-capable tool. - Server overrides were allowed to apply after regular overrides.
- The server was restarted after file changes, and the startup log was checked.
- The world and configuration can be restored from a backup.

The essential rule is simple: match the Minecraft version and loader, install the loader first, keep server and client files separate, and let a server-aware .mrpack installer handle complete packs.
