To defeat an ocean monument, kill its three elder guardians first, keep hard cover between you and charging guardian beams, and carry a way to breathe and retreat. The elders are the real objective: each has 80 HP, the three together impose Mining Fatigue III within 50 blocks, and the effect lasts five minutes. Once the elders are dead, ordinary guardians are manageable and their wet sponges can help you drain the monument.

Which mobs live in an ocean monument?
Ocean monuments contain two hostile aquatic mobs: guardians and elder guardians. Ordinary guardians are numerous and control the open water around the structure. Exactly three elder guardians generate in every monument: one in the upper area and one in each wing. They are slower, tougher and responsible for the Mining Fatigue effect that makes emergency mining nearly useless.

How guardian lasers work
Ordinary guardian beam
A guardian locks on, charges its beam for several seconds, and deals magic damage when the charge completes. The beam is a line-of-sight threat rather than an attack you should absorb while swimming in open water. Pillars, monument rooms, corners and any solid block between you and the guardian interrupt that line of sight. If several guardians are charging at once, moving into cover is safer than trying to outswim them.
Guardians also have orange spikes. When those spikes are extended, melee attacks cause 2 damage in retaliation. A sword can still finish a guardian, but repeatedly striking a spiked target turns every hit into a trade. Use a bow when distance allows, or attack from a position where you can immediately retreat behind a block.

Elder guardian beam
An elder guardian uses the same basic lock-on idea but with a stronger beam that deals 8 HP. Its 80 HP pool means it takes substantially more punishment than a common guardian. Do not stand in a doorway or corridor and wait for the elder to finish charging: use the monument’s geometry as cover, expose yourself briefly to attack, and return to safety before another charge completes.
Mining Fatigue III: what it does and how the editions differ
Each elder guardian applies Mining Fatigue III to players within 50 blocks. The effect lasts five minutes. In practice, that means a player who enters the monument and tries to mine an emergency exit may find the block-breaking time so long that the route is not useful during a fight.

Using milk
Milk removes Mining Fatigue, but it removes Water Breathing and every other active status effect at the same time. Drinking milk underwater can therefore exchange one emergency for another. Carrying it is useful as a temporary reset, especially if you can reach an air pocket, but it is not a substitute for killing all three elders. The safest order is to clear the elders first, then use milk only when you have a controlled reason to remove the remaining effect.
Preparation: equipment that solves the actual problems
No single armor set is mandatory, and there is no authoritative minimum gear level or average success time. Prepare for three specific risks instead: beam damage, running out of air and losing your retreat route.
Core equipment
- Strong armor: Protection IV and Mending armor are recommendations from an adventure tutorial, not requirements.
- Underwater movement: Depth Strider boots are a recommended option for reaching cover and repositioning in rooms.
- Reliable damage: Bring a melee weapon, a bow, or both. A bow lets you punish guardians without triggering spike retaliation.
- Food: Carry enough to recover between engagements; do not count on finding a safe place to pause.
- Blocks: Bring blocks that are easy to place so you can create a sightline break, mark a route or seal a dangerous opening.
- Breathing support: Water Breathing potions, air pockets and a known retreat route all matter. Night Vision improves visibility; Regeneration and Invisibility are additional potion options cited for monument adventures.
Potions and trade-offs
Night Vision makes room layouts and approaching guardians easier to read. Water Breathing gives you time to fight instead of repeatedly surfacing. Regeneration helps recover from a beam, while Invisibility can reduce unwanted attention in some situations. These are preparation choices rather than a checklist of mandatory consumables. If you use milk, remember that it also removes Water Breathing, Night Vision, Regeneration and Invisibility.

Plan the exit before the entrance
Choose where you will retreat before crossing the monument boundary. An air pocket, a vertical route to open water, or a blocked-off room can all work. Put spare blocks where you can reach them quickly. If Mining Fatigue is already active, assume that mining a new escape route will be too slow and use the route you prepared.

The practical priority is not the shortest entrance. It is the route that gives you cover, water-breathing time and a way out while at least one elder remains alive.
Step-by-step: a safe monument clear
- Establish a safe starting point. Approach from above or through the front, then create an air pocket or confirm a retreat route. Keep spare blocks accessible rather than buried in a chest outside.
- Enter under cover. Move from pillar to pillar, room to room or corner to corner. If multiple guardians begin charging, stop swimming in the open and wait behind solid blocks until the lines of attack are broken.
- Reach the upper elder when practical. The top elder is often the first target in a route that enters from above. Expose yourself only long enough to attack, then return to cover. Do not tunnel as your primary emergency plan once Mining Fatigue is active.
- Clear the two wing elders. Work through the left and right wings, preserving a known route back to your air supply. You need all three elders dead before the monument is truly safe; killing one does not stop the other two from applying the effect.
- Use player kills for the elders. Kill them yourself so their wet-sponges drops are retained. Avoid relying on environmental damage if preserving those drops is part of your plan.
- Recover and reset. Once the elders are dead, return to your air pocket, eat, refresh your breathing support and organize the inventory before clearing ordinary guardians.
- Clear remaining guardians. Fight from cover, use ranged attacks when spikes are extended and collect drops as each room becomes safe.
- Drain only after control is established. Dry the wet sponges in a furnace or in the Nether, then use them to remove water from rooms. Draining improves visibility and movement, but doing it before the elders are dealt with can leave you exposed.
How to kill elder guardians
Use a cover-and-peek rhythm
An elder’s 8-HP laser makes standing in its beam especially costly. Place or use a solid block so the elder cannot maintain line of sight, step out to land attacks, and retreat before the next charge completes. The method is slower than charging directly, but it prevents a single open-water exchange from deciding the fight.
Keep the three targets separate
Do not treat the monument as one giant health bar. The top elder and the two wing elders are separate objectives, and each can contribute Mining Fatigue while alive. After every kill, navigate back to cover and verify your route before committing to the next wing. A wing that contains one elder is not safe merely because the top room has been cleared.
Do not let milk replace the objective
Milk can buy a short window without Mining Fatigue, but it also removes Water Breathing. If you drink it while still surrounded by water and elders, you may lose the breathing support that made the approach possible. Reserve milk for a controlled reset and continue prioritizing the remaining elders.

How to fight ordinary guardians after the elders
Break line of sight first
Guardians are most dangerous when several have an uninterrupted view of you. Use monument pillars, room walls and corners to make each guardian reacquire you instead of allowing a group to charge simultaneously. Place blocks to extend cover around doorways or open pockets.
Choose melee or ranged damage deliberately
Use a bow when you can attack from behind cover or when orange spikes are extended. Use melee when a guardian is trapped in a position where you can strike and retreat safely. The 2-damage spike retaliation is a reason to change timing, not a reason to abandon melee entirely.
Clear in sections
After the elders are dead, clear one room or corridor at a time. Mark the boundary between cleared and uncleared areas with placed blocks, and keep your air route open. This prevents a guardian from driving you into an unexplored wing while you are low on health or food.
Draining the monument with sponges
Wet sponges are one of the most useful practical rewards. After the elder fight, dry them in a furnace or in the Nether. A dried sponge can then remove water from sections of the monument, improving visibility and turning a three-dimensional swimming fight into a more controlled room clear.
Drain progressively rather than trying to empty the entire structure at once. Start with the room where you need reliable footing or a safe staging point, dry the sponges again, and continue into adjacent sections. Keep an undrained water route available if your movement plan depends on swimming, and do not block your only exit while placing sponges.

What guardians and monuments drop
Guardian drops
Guardians can drop prismarine shards or prismarine crystals, plus a raw fish. The official description also notes that an elder guardian can drop a cooked fish if it somehow burns to death. Wet sponges are associated with elder guardians and are especially valuable for the follow-on draining work.
Monument rewards
The cited monument rewards include eight gold blocks, wet sponges, prismarine variants, sea-lantern materials and the tide armor trim. Secure the structure before collecting everything: an item pickup is not worth crossing an uncleared corridor with multiple beams charging.

Do guardians respawn after you clear a monument?
Guardians require water and spawn only in ocean monuments. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different guardian-spawning rules, so the exact behavior around a particular cleared structure is edition-dependent. Destroying the visible monument does not automatically make every guardian permanently renewable or permanently impossible: if suitable water remains under the relevant spawning conditions, guardians can remain renewable after the structure itself is destroyed.
For a definitive test in your world, remove or retain the water around the monument deliberately, leave the area loaded, and observe whether new guardians appear under your edition’s rules. Treat a cleared monument as a potential farm site only after checking the actual water volume and spawning spaces you left behind.

Before building, decide whether the goal is drops, experience or both. A farm that maximizes spawn throughput may require extensive water clearing, while a simpler design can be easier to maintain but produce less. Preserve safe access to the monument until the farm works; the structure is still dangerous while guardians remain and Mining Fatigue can make construction mistakes difficult to repair.

The universal tactic is edition-proof: prepare breathing support, break laser line of sight, kill all three elders and only then treat the monument as a routine guardian-clearing job.
Troubleshooting common failures
“I cannot mine out after entering.”
Mining Fatigue III is active because an elder is within 50 blocks, or the effect was recently reapplied. Stop treating a new tunnel as the escape route. Follow the prepared path, move behind existing walls and pillars, or reach an air pocket. Milk is only a temporary reset and removes Water Breathing.
“I lose health while attacking a guardian.”
The orange spikes were extended and your melee hits triggered 2 damage of retaliation. Switch to a bow, wait behind cover for a safer opening, or strike only when you can retreat immediately.
“Several beams hit me before I reach a room.”
You crossed open water with too many guardians in line of sight. Backtrack to the last solid cover, place blocks to connect cover points and advance in short exposures rather than swimming directly toward the next target.
“Milk made the situation worse.”
Milk removes Water Breathing along with Mining Fatigue. Drink it only with an air pocket, a reliable surface route or another breathing plan already available. Continue hunting the elders instead of repeatedly cycling milk.
“I expected guardians to stop spawning forever.”
Guardians require water, and Java and Bedrock use different spawning rules. If suitable water remains, guardians may remain renewable even after the monument’s visible blocks are removed. Control the water and verify behavior in your edition before assuming the area is permanently quiet.
