To install mods on a Project Zomboid Build 42 dedicated server, add numeric Steam Workshop item IDs to WorkshopItems= and the mods’ text package IDs to Mods= in the server preset that the server actually launches. Restart the server, confirm the download and load messages in the logs, and require every player to use the same compatible mod set and order.

What the two server lists do
Project Zomboid uses two different identifiers for a Steam Workshop mod. Confusing them is the most common reason a server downloads content but does not load it.

A Workshop item can contain one or several packages. Therefore, its numeric Workshop ID and its text Mod ID are not interchangeable. A numeric value in Mods= will not enable the package, and a text Mod ID in WorkshopItems= can trigger an invalid-ID error.
Both settings belong in the active server preset under Zomboid/Server. The exact file name depends on the server name; a common default is Zomboid/Server/servertest.ini.

Before you edit anything
- Stop the dedicated server. Do not edit the preset while the process is writing it. A running server can overwrite your changes or leave a partially written file.
- Back up the Zomboid data directory and the active save. Include the server preset, map data, player data, and any configuration files. Keep the backup outside the live server directory so an update cannot replace it.
- Confirm the Build 42 branch and release. Mod support and configuration syntax can change between unstable releases. Check that each Workshop page identifies the same Build 42 branch and supports multiplayer.
- Record the server name and launch command or panel setting. This tells you which preset the process is intended to load and helps detect a second preset later.
Announce the planned restart to players. A mod change is a server change, not merely a client download, and a failed migration can make a world unavailable until you restore the backup.
Find the preset the server really uses
Open the server’s Zomboid/Server directory and identify the .ini file named by the launch configuration. If the command starts a server named servertest, the expected file is usually servertest.ini. A hosting panel may expose a different server name, and a Docker deployment may mount the Zomboid directory at a path inside the container.
Check for the wrong-world problem
If you edit one file and nothing changes, do not immediately change the mod syntax. First check the startup log for the preset or server name being loaded. Multiple .ini files are common after testing different worlds. The server may be launching another file, or a panel may generate a preset from its own configuration screen at startup.
Preserve existing values
Do not delete existing Workshop or Mod entries unless you intend to remove them. Keep the separators used by the generated file. For multiple entries, Build 42 presets commonly use semicolons, for example WorkshopItems=123456789;987654321.
Collect the two identifiers for every mod
Numeric Workshop item ID
Open the mod’s Steam Workshop page and copy the numeric id= value from its URL. The ID is the item identifier Steam uses for downloading. Copy only the digits, not the full URL, title, or creator name.
For example, if the page URL contains ?id=123456789, enter 123456789 in WorkshopItems=. Separate several IDs with semicolons and do not add spaces unless the generated preset already uses them.

Text Mod ID
Find the package’s Mod ID in its mod.info file. The Workshop description may also publish it, but the package file is the more direct check when the description lists several modules. The value is a case-sensitive text identifier, not the Workshop number.
A single Workshop item can include multiple folders, each with its own Mod ID. Add every package that the mod author says must be enabled. If a package lists dependencies, collect those Mod IDs and Workshop IDs as well; downloading only the visible main item may leave a dependency missing.
Edit the Build 42 server preset
With the server stopped, open the active .ini file in a plain-text editor. Locate the existing WorkshopItems= and Mods= lines. If they are absent, add them in the same configuration section and style used by the generated preset.

Put numeric Steam item IDs on the WorkshopItems= line:

Put the text package IDs on Mods=. Build 42 examples and generated presets commonly show a leading backslash before each Mod ID:

Mods=MyVehicleMod;AnotherPackageConfiguration syntax has changed during Build 42 development. If the server downloads an item but does not load it, compare your line with a freshly generated preset from the exact Build 42 release you are running. Use the spelling, capitalization, separators, and leading-backslash style produced for that release rather than copying syntax from an older guide.
Ordering and dependencies
Use the order required by the mod author. Some packages need a core library before an add-on, while map and spawn packages may have their own order requirements. Keep the same order for the server and every client. Do not alphabetize a working list unless the author says order is irrelevant.

Save the file as plain text with its original name and extension. Avoid word processors that add formatting or change backslashes, quotation marks, or line endings.
Restart and verify the result
- Start the server using the same command, service, panel, or container definition that normally launches it.
- Watch the startup log while Steam content is downloaded. The first start after a change can take longer because Workshop files must be fetched or updated.
- Confirm that each numeric Workshop ID downloads without an invalid-ID or Steam failure message.
- Confirm that each text Mod ID is recognized and enabled after the download phase. A successful download alone is not proof that the package loaded.
- Join with a test account and check the server’s mod requirement prompt or connection messages. Test the features that matter before inviting the whole player group.
If the server starts but a feature is absent, return to the distinction between the two lists: the Workshop item may be downloaded while its package ID is missing, misspelled, or formatted incorrectly in Mods=.
Make clients use the same compatible set
Every client must have the same compatible mod set and order. Depending on the package, a client may download the Workshop content automatically when joining, or may need to subscribe and update it first. A client with an extra, missing, outdated, or differently ordered package can fail the connection or desynchronize from the server.
Give players a precise change notice
- List the mod names and exact Workshop pages, not just a collection title.
- State the Build 42 branch and the date of the change.
- Tell players to let Steam finish updates before joining.
- Tell them to remove obsolete versions or duplicate local copies when the author instructs it.
- Ask players to report the first connection error and the mod name shown in it.
Do not enable a package merely because it works in single-player. Check its Workshop description for Build 42 and multiplayer support, and test it on a copy of the world when possible.

Troubleshoot a mod that downloads but does not load
The server is using another preset
Inspect the startup output for the server name and preset path. Compare it with the file you edited. Correct the launch setting or make the change in the preset actually being loaded. This is especially common when a panel creates servertest.ini but the service starts a custom server name.
The Mod ID is wrong or missing
Open the downloaded package and read its mod.info. Copy the exact text ID, including capitalization. If the Workshop item contains several packages, add the required IDs individually. Recheck the Build 42 leading-backslash syntax and semicolon separators.
An invalid Workshop ID appears
Check that every value in WorkshopItems= is a numeric Steam item ID copied from a Workshop URL. Remove text Mod IDs, collection names, spaces copied from surrounding prose, and punctuation. If the item was deleted or made private, Steam cannot download it even when the number is correctly formatted.

Read the mod author’s dependency list and add each required Workshop item and Mod ID. Dependencies may be separate items, so a successful download of the main package does not prove that all required libraries are present.
Steam download or disk-space failures
Check the log for Steam authentication, network, timeout, permission, and disk-space messages. Verify that the account or service running the server can write to the Workshop and Zomboid directories, that the disk has room for updates, and that Steam access is available to the deployment. Retry only after correcting the underlying failure; repeated restarts can leave partial files.
Linux or Docker case sensitivity
Linux filesystems and many container volumes are case-sensitive. Animation or asset references with incorrect capitalization may work on a case-insensitive desktop but fail on the server. Follow the deployment’s documented workaround for the affected package, and inspect the log for the exact missing path. Also verify that the container volume maps the same Zomboid and Workshop directories you edited on the host.

Players still cannot join
Compare the server’s enabled list with the client’s list and versions. Remove stale local copies, let Steam complete the update, and test with one client using a clean, matching set. A connection failure after a mod update can indicate that the server and clients are on different package revisions rather than that the preset syntax is wrong.

Back up the active save before enabling anything that changes maps, cells, loot tables, spawns, or world generation. Adding a mod does not automatically retrofit its content into an existing world. Some map packages require a new world; others require a carefully planned migration and a specific map order.
Read the author’s migration instructions before restarting the production world. If the package is unsafe to remove after objects have spawned, record that limitation in the server change notice. When testing, use a copy of the save so that a failed load or incompatible update cannot damage the live world.
Choose an installation route

For a managed Project Zomboid server hosting service, confirm Build 42 support, Workshop download behavior, access to the active preset, backup controls, and a way to inspect logs before moving a live world. A panel that hides WorkshopItems= and Mods= may still generate them, so verify the resulting file rather than trusting a saved form.
Updating, removing, and rolling back mods
Update safely
- Stop the server and back up the preset, save, and Workshop content.
- Check the mod page for Build 42 compatibility and changed dependencies.
- Allow the server to download the new Workshop revision.
- Read the change notes for migration or load-order requirements.
- Start the server and test on a backup copy before returning to the live world.
Remove a mod
Stop the server, remove its numeric ID from WorkshopItems= and its package ID from Mods=, then check whether the author warns that removal can corrupt existing objects or map cells. Removing only one of the two entries leaves an inconsistent configuration.
Roll back
If an update breaks startup or joining, stop the server, restore the backed-up preset and save, and use the package version supported by the author’s rollback instructions. Do not assume that simply re-adding the old ID restores an older Workshop revision; Steam may provide the current item unless the author documents a versioning method.
Build 42 multiplayer stability warning
Build 42 multiplayer availability has been release-specific. The Indie Stone’s Build 42 multiplayer announcement, reproduced in a Steam discussion, states: “Multiplayer is WIP and has been released for stress testing.” That announcement also advises disabling all mods for that unstable release and warns that later unstable updates can disrupt ongoing multiplayer games.
Treat that warning as applying to the release described by the announcement, not as a permanent statement about every later Build 42 build. Before production use, read the current Build 42 notes, confirm that multiplayer is supported for your branch, and test the exact mod set on a disposable world. Unstable updates can change syntax, break dependencies, or invalidate a running game even when the preset was previously correct.
