To install mods on an Enshrouded dedicated server, first install and launch Keen Games’ official server from Steam’s Tools section. Then install the community Enshrouded Mod Loader (EML): place dbghelp.dll beside the dedicated-server executable, create a neighboring mods folder, and put every mod in its own subfolder with that mod’s mod.json. Restart the server and test one mod at a time.

This is an unofficial mod path. The researched documentation does not identify an official Workshop or Keen Games-supported dedicated-server mod framework, so updates can break EML or individual mods. Keep an untouched backup of the server and save files, record versions, and check whether each mod also requires files on every player’s computer.

Prepare the server before copying community files. The official dedicated server is supported on Windows in the installation guidance discussed here; Linux support was described as planned rather than established. If your server runs another operating system, verify compatibility with the current official documentation and with the loader release before proceeding.
- A legitimate Enshrouded Dedicated Server installation through Steam.
- Access to the server’s installed-files directory and permission to create folders and copy DLL files.
- A full backup of the dedicated-server directory and the world/save files.
- The EML release and mods that explicitly match your current game and server build.
- A way to stop and start the server while testing, plus access to its startup output or logs.
Do not treat a mod description as optional reading. Requirements such as a specific loader build, dbghelp.dll, a game version, or client-side files are part of that mod’s installation instructions.

Install the official Enshrouded dedicated server
1. Show Steam’s Tools library
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Use the library filter and enable Tools.
- Find Enshrouded Dedicated Server and install it.
The dedicated server is a separate tool entry, not the normal game shortcut. If it does not appear, check that the Tools filter is enabled and that Steam has finished updating the library list.
2. Open the installed-files location
Use Steam’s option to browse the tool’s installed files. You need the directory containing Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe; this directory becomes the server root for the loader files later. Avoid placing dbghelp.dll in the game client’s installation directory by mistake.

3. Run the executable once
Launch Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe directly from the installed-files directory. The official installation guidance recommends running the executable rather than relying on Steam’s Launch button. Allow it to finish its initial startup, then stop the server cleanly.
That first run creates enshrouded_server.json, the official server configuration file. Keep the generated file as a baseline before changing settings or adding mods.
Back up the clean server and configuration
Before installing EML, copy the entire server directory and the save files to a separate location. Include your current enshrouded_server.json. A backup lets you remove a broken loader or restore a known-good world without guessing which file caused the failure.

Make a short inventory alongside the backup:
- Game and dedicated-server build shown by Steam.
- EML release number.
- Each mod name, release number, and stated requirements.
- Whether each mod is server-only or requires client installation.
- The date and time of the last known successful startup.
The official settings guidance notes that a stale or incorrectly updated JSON can be deleted so the server recreates it at the next start. Use that recovery only after preserving a copy of the old file, because regeneration removes your manual settings from the discarded file.

Install Enshrouded Mod Loader (EML)
1. Match EML to your build
Download an EML release that explicitly supports the current Enshrouded game and dedicated-server build. A loader built for an older executable can fail before the server reaches its normal online state, even when the folder layout is correct.
2. Place the loader DLL in the server root
Stop the server. Copy dbghelp.dll into the same directory as Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe. The two files must be side by side. Do not put the DLL inside a mod folder, inside a separate downloads folder, or in the client’s game directory.
3. Create the mods directory
In that same server-root directory, create a folder named exactly mods. It should be a sibling of dbghelp.dll, not a folder inside the DLL’s location hierarchy.
4. Give each mod its own subfolder
Create one subfolder per mod under mods. Keep the mod’s supplied mod.json in its own subfolder with the mod files it requires. Do not merge files from different mods into one directory unless the mod author specifically instructs you to do so.

Check whether a mod also belongs on every client
There is no universal client rule. Some changes are server-side and only the host needs the files. Other mods alter client assets, interface elements, or behavior and require every player to install matching client files.
For each mod, read its requirement list and release notes before inviting players:
- Server-side only: install it on the dedicated server and tell players which server build and mod version are active.
- Server plus client: distribute the exact client files and installation steps to every player, including anyone who joins later.
- Client-only: do not copy it to the dedicated server unless its instructions say the server component is also required.
Client mismatches can appear as connection failures, missing features, visual errors, or a player being unable to join. Update the server and all required clients as a coordinated change rather than mixing releases.

Use official server settings when they already provide the change
enshrouded_server.json contains documented gameplay presets and other server controls. If your goal is a supported difficulty, loot, or gameplay adjustment, configure the official JSON first. This route avoids adding a loader and is generally easier to reverse and revalidate after a game update.
Stop the server before editing the JSON, preserve valid JSON syntax, and change one setting group at a time. If the server refuses to start after an edit, restore the backup or delete the faulty JSON so the official executable can recreate it on the next launch, then reapply only verified settings.

- Confirm that the server is stopped and that your backup is complete.
- Check the EML release and every mod’s stated game-version requirement.
- Copy
dbghelp.dll, createmods, and verify each mod subfolder contains its ownmod.json. - Start
Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exedirectly. - Wait for the server to reach its normal online state and inspect the startup output or logs for loader and mod errors.
- Connect with a test character before announcing the server to the whole group.
Add only one new mod between successful tests. If several packages are introduced at once, a failure cannot be attributed reliably to one of them.

Do not infer the category from a mod’s name. Use its own documentation and release notes.

Troubleshoot a server that will not start
It stops immediately after adding EML
- Remove
dbghelp.dlltemporarily and start the clean server. If the clean server works, verify that EML matches the current server build. - Check that the DLL is beside
Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe, not inmodsor the client directory. - Restore the clean backup if the executable or another server file was overwritten.
It starts cleanly but fails after adding a mod
- Remove the newest mod subfolder and test again.
- Confirm that the mod has its own
mod.jsonand that the package was not nested one folder too deeply. - Compare the mod’s required game, server, and EML versions with the versions installed on the machine.
- Reintroduce the mod only after a clean startup, then test it by itself before adding another package.
The server starts, but players cannot join
Check whether the mod requires client files and whether every player installed the same release. A server-side rules mod and a client asset mod have different distribution requirements; follow the individual mod’s instructions rather than copying every server file to every player.

Assume compatibility is the first suspect. Stop the server, preserve logs and the current backup, and test the unmodded server. Then check for an EML release and mod releases that explicitly support the new game/server build. Update one component at a time. Do not overwrite a working backup until the updated combination has completed a full startup and a test connection.
The configuration file appears invalid
Restore the last known-good enshrouded_server.json. If no valid copy remains, remove the stale JSON and start the official executable so it can recreate the file, then rebuild your settings carefully from the documented options.
When self-hosting cannot be reached
A mod installation cannot solve a network that cannot expose the server. Carrier-grade NAT, blocked inbound traffic, or unavailable port forwarding can prevent friends from reaching a self-hosted instance. In that situation, managed Enshrouded hosting is a practical fallback.

Confirm mod-loader support with the provider before paying, because a managed panel may restrict DLL files or replace server files during automatic updates.
A maintenance routine that prevents most mod failures
- Keep a clean, unmodded server backup and a separate current modded backup.
- Record the game/server build, EML release, and every mod release.
- Read release notes before applying an update.
- Back up saves and configuration before every change.
- Update one item at a time and perform a startup plus test connection.
- Tell players exactly which client files, if any, changed.
- Keep the previous working package until the new combination is proven.
The practical rule is simple: use the official JSON for supported gameplay controls, and use EML only when a maintained community mod is necessary. Because this route is unofficial, backups and controlled updates are part of the installation, not optional cleanup.
