To move a Windows Steam Palworld world to a dedicated server, stop both games, back up the saves, copy the complete world folder into Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, and set DedicatedServerName to that folder’s exact name, including capitalization. Start the server only after the copy and configuration change are complete.

This procedure preserves the world, bases, storage, Pals and most player data. A co-op host normally receives a new character identity on the dedicated server unless the old player save is repaired. PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store saves require conversion first; Xbox console saves cannot be downloaded directly for this migration.

What you need before moving the world
A save migration is a file operation, not an in-game export. You need access to the source computer, the destination server’s files, and permission to stop and start that server. The safest sequence is to make every copy while the game and server are closed.
- A Windows Steam installation for the ordinary direct-copy method.
- SFTP access or a hosting-panel file manager for the server.
- Permission to edit the server’s
GameUserSettings.ini. - Enough storage for an untouched backup of both the source and destination saves.
- Matching Palworld game and server versions, especially when importing a converted Game Pass save.
Load the source world once, wait for the game to save, leave to the title screen, and quit completely. Stop the dedicated server before downloading, deleting or uploading any save. Copying while either process is writing can leave out files or produce a corrupt world.

Make two independent backups
- Copy the entire source world folder to a location outside the Palworld save directory. Keep the original folder unchanged.
- Download the destination server’s current
SaveGames/0/directory, even if the server appears to contain only a newly generated world. - Give each backup a date and identify which one is the source and which one is the destination.
Do not overwrite the only copy of a save while troubleshooting. If a migration fails, restore the destination backup, correct the configuration, and try again.
Find the Windows Steam world folder
For a Windows Steam single-player or co-op world, open this path in File Explorer:
%LOCALAPPDATA%PalSavedSaveGames<SteamID64><world-folder>
You can paste the path into File Explorer’s address bar. Replace <SteamID64> with the numeric Steam account directory on that computer. Inside it, each alphanumeric directory is a separate world. The correct directory is the one containing the save files and the Players subfolder.

If one of these expected items is missing, stop and recheck that you selected the world directory rather than the parent SteamID64 directory or a different world.
Upload a Steam world to a dedicated server
The following procedure applies to a normal Windows Steam source and a dedicated server whose files are accessible through SFTP or a control panel.

- Stop the destination server. Use the hosting panel’s Stop command and wait until its status confirms that the process has exited.
- Create the destination save directory if necessary. If the server has never run, start it once, allow it to create its folders, then stop it again. The target directory is
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. - Open the target directory. Existing content may include a test world generated by the first launch. Keep it in your destination backup; do not mix its files with the source world.
- Upload the world directory. Upload the complete source folder, or all of its contents, into
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. Preserve the original alphanumeric folder name exactly. The resulting layout should bePal/Saved/SaveGames/0/<world-folder>/Level.sav, with the other files andPlayers/alongside it. - Edit the server configuration. Open
Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/GameUserSettings.ini. Some Windows-based server installations use the equivalentWindowsServerpath instead. FindDedicatedServerName=and set it to the exact uploaded folder name, including letter case:DedicatedServerName=Ab12Cd34Ef56. - Save the configuration without changing the folder name. A typo, an extra space, different capitalization or a reference to the parent directory causes the server to look for another save and generate a fresh world.
- Choose how to handle world options. Follow the
WorldOption.savdecision below before starting the server. - Start the server. Do not launch it until the upload has finished and the configuration file has been saved.
Why the folder name matters
DedicatedServerName is a selector, not a display title. The value must match the directory directly under SaveGames/0/. If the directory is named Ab12Cd34Ef56, values such as ab12cd34ef56, Ab12Cd34Ef56 or MyWorld do not select it. The usual symptom is a server that starts normally but contains a new map.

Decide whether to keep WorldOption.sav
WorldOption.sav stores local or co-op settings. Those settings can override values in the server’s PalWorldSettings.ini, including rates and death-related behavior. Keeping it is appropriate when the dedicated server should reproduce the source world’s options. Removing it is appropriate when the server configuration should be authoritative.
Keep the file when
- You want the transferred world to retain its local or co-op rules.
- You have not yet prepared a server-specific settings file.
- You are testing a faithful copy before making configuration changes.
Remove the file when
- You have deliberately configured rates, difficulty or death settings for the server.
- The server keeps ignoring changes made in
PalWorldSettings.ini. - You want to prevent old local settings from overriding the dedicated-server setup.
Make a backup before deleting it. Remove only WorldOption.sav; do not delete Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav, LocalData.sav or the Players/ directory.
Verify the imported world
Join after the server reports that it is running and check more than the map name. A successful migration should show the existing terrain changes and bases, stored items, captured Pals and the transferred players’ characters.
- Confirm that recognizable bases are present at their old locations.
- Open several chests and verify that their contents are not from the newly generated test world.
- Check that Pals assigned to bases and boxes are present.
- Ask a non-host co-op player to join and verify that their character and inventory appear.
- Make a small, harmless change, leave the server, restart it and confirm that the change persists.
If the map is empty, stop before creating new buildings or replacing files. Troubleshooting is easier when the destination has not been modified after the failed launch.

The co-op host usually gets a new character
World data and player identity are separate. In a co-op source, the host is commonly stored as Players/00000000000000000000000000000001.sav. A dedicated server assigns a new player GUID when the former host first connects, so the original host normally starts with a new character even though the world and other players transfer.
This is not evidence that the world upload failed. It is an identity-mapping issue. The affected player may need to recreate progression, inventory or appearance unless the old save is patched.
GUID repair option
The community-maintained palworld-host-save-fix tool can patch the old player file to the new GUID. Treat it as experimental: make a separate backup first, follow the tool’s version-specific instructions, and expect possible guild or Pal ownership edge cases. If the patch produces unexpected ownership or inventory results, restore the untouched backup rather than repeatedly editing the live save.
Move a world from one dedicated server to another
A dedicated-to-dedicated migration is simpler because the server already uses dedicated-server player IDs.
- Stop the old server and download
SaveGames/0/<name>/in full. - Stop the new server and back up its existing
SaveGames/0/directory. - Upload the old world folder to the new server’s
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. - Set
DedicatedServerNamein the new server’s applicableGameUserSettings.inito the exact folder name. - Start the new server and verify the map, bases and players.
Existing dedicated-server player IDs remain valid in this scenario, so the host-character problem associated with converting a co-op save normally does not occur.

Import a PC Game Pass or Microsoft Store save
PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store saves are stored differently from Steam saves. The usual location is:

- Close Palworld and back up the entire
wgsdirectory. - Use a current community converter, such as XGP Save Extractor or PalworldSaveTools, to extract the container into a normal Palworld world folder.
- Check that the extracted result contains the expected save files and
Players/directory. - Match the game build and dedicated-server build before attempting the import. Converter compatibility can change when the game save format changes.
- Upload the resulting world folder to
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, setDedicatedServerNameto its exact name, and follow the Steam verification steps.
Keep the original encrypted containers until the converted world has been tested. If extraction fails, changing file names manually will not turn the containers into a valid dedicated-server save.

Xbox console saves are not directly downloadable as ordinary files. Without first obtaining a normal world folder through a supported conversion or transfer route, there is nothing to upload to the server. Direct Xbox import is therefore not a standard file-manager operation.

PC Game Pass conversion and Xbox-console transfer are different cases: the former may provide container files that a compatible converter can process, while the console does not normally expose a downloadable save directory. Compatibility is version-sensitive, so confirm the converter and server support for the specific game build before altering the only copy.

Pocketpair’s cited dedicated-server guide identifies support for Steam, Xbox/Microsoft Store PC and macOS in its documented version. Its version 0.5.0 guidance states that Steam cross-play with Xbox is unavailable for that setup, and Xbox players must use a community-server listing rather than entering an IP address directly. PlayStation 5 cross-play was unavailable in that cited guidance. Platform policies can change with later releases, so check the current official version documentation when the platform is important to your group.
Troubleshoot a server that starts a new world
The server launches but the map is empty
- Stop the server immediately.
- Confirm the uploaded folder is directly under
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, not one level deeper. - Confirm that
Level.savis inside that folder. - Compare every character in the folder name with
DedicatedServerName, including capitalization. - Check that the configuration file edited is the active
LinuxServerorWindowsServerfile for that installation. - Restore the destination backup if the failed launch created additional files, then retry with the corrected path.
The upload appears incomplete
Compare the source and destination directory listings. A transfer that copied only Level.sav but omitted Players/, LevelMeta.sav or LocalData.sav is not a complete migration. Re-upload the entire folder with the server stopped.
Server settings do not take effect
Check whether WorldOption.sav contains the local settings that are overriding PalWorldSettings.ini. Back it up, remove it, and restart only after confirming the server settings file is correctly configured.
One player is missing or has a new character
Verify that the full Players/ directory was copied. If every non-host player is present but the former co-op host is new, the GUID behavior described above is expected; use a backed-up community repair tool only if preserving that character is worth the risk.

Restore the original containers, verify that the converter supports the current game build, and ensure the server is running a compatible version. Do not diagnose a conversion problem by deleting files from the only source copy.
How to choose a hosting route for migration
The important difference between hosting options is not a brand name; it is whether the service gives you safe control over the files and process.

A managed server is useful when you do not want to handle SFTP, backups or configuration files, but verify those capabilities before ordering. No hosting panel can bypass the co-op host identity limitation or make an Xbox console save downloadable.
