Download the OptiFine installer for the Minecraft version you plan to play, run it, then choose the OptiFine profile in the Minecraft Launcher. If the server is modded, your client must also use the server’s Minecraft version and mod loader.
Why OptiFine is installed on your computer, not Aternos
Aternos describes OptiFine as a client-side mod and recommends it for client-side fog settings. For ordinary play, there is no OptiFine installation step in the Aternos dashboard. Each player who needs OptiFine installs it on their own computer. Aternos’s fog guidance gives the installer-and-launcher-profile sequence.

Install OptiFine for an Aternos server
- Check the server setup. In Aternos, identify the server’s Minecraft version and whether it is vanilla or modded. If it is modded, note the mod loader and the mods installed on the server.
- Get the matching OptiFine installer. Download the OptiFine build for the Minecraft version you intend to launch. Compatibility can vary by OptiFine release, Minecraft version, and mod loader combination; do not assume every combination works.
- Run the installer. Complete the OptiFine installer for the Minecraft installation you use.
- Select the OptiFine profile. Open the Minecraft Launcher, choose the OptiFine profile, and launch the game.
- Join the server. For a modded server, make sure your client has the same Minecraft version and loader as the server, along with the mods installed on the server.
Aternos documents support for mod-capable Java server software including Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt. Its instructions say players need the same loader and version as the server, and should install the server’s mods on their client. See Aternos’s mod installation guidance.
What changes if the server is modded?
OptiFine on your client does not replace the server’s loader or its required mods. Set up the loader and required mods on your computer to match the Aternos server, then use OptiFine only if that particular combination is supported. Aternos’s general setup guidance does not provide a compatibility chart for every OptiFine release and loader, so check the release-specific requirements before combining them.

If a resource pack requires OptiFine
Some server resource packs require OptiFine features. If the pack for your Aternos server has that requirement, each player who wants to use it must install the required OptiFine version on their own device before joining. Aternos explains this in its OptiFine guidance.
Troubleshooting
The OptiFine profile does not appear
Check that the installer completed and that it was run for the same Minecraft installation the Launcher is using. Aternos documents the general installer and profile-selection steps, but not launcher-specific recovery instructions.

The server rejects the connection
For a modded server, compare your client’s Minecraft version, loader, and required mod versions with the server configuration. A mismatch can cause connection errors; OptiFine alone does not make an incompatible client match the server.

No—not as the ordinary way to use OptiFine. Aternos’s documented instructions treat it as a client-side mod and separately direct server mod setup through supported mod-loader software. Aternos points users who specifically need custom mod uploads and full file access to exaroton, but that is an optional hosting alternative, not a requirement for installing OptiFine on your computer.
