Yes, pfSense can run on a cloud VPS. The reliable method is to provision an amd64 virtual machine with persistent storage, console recovery, Internet access during installation, an attachable pfSense AMD64 ISO, and two usable virtual network interfaces. Mount the ISO, install pfSense to the virtual disk, remove the ISO, map the upstream interface as WAN and the private interface as LAN, then verify routing before exposing management services.

What you need before installing pfSense on a VPS

pfSense runs in both bare-metal and hosted (Type-2) virtualization environments. A VPS is therefore a supported deployment model, but the provider must expose the controls that a firewall needs. A normal single-interface VPS intended only for a web server is usually not enough: pfSense needs a dependable upstream path and a separate private-side interface if it is going to route or NAT traffic for other systems.

Minimum and practical resources

Netgate’s documented non-Netgate minimum is a 64-bit amd64 CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, and at least one compatible network interface. A basic virtual-firewall example uses 1 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of disk with two virtual adapters. Treat those figures as starting points, not a performance guarantee. Packages, VPN encryption, logging, traffic inspection, and many simultaneous connections can require more CPU, memory, and disk.

Item Documented baseline Practical VPS guidance
CPU 64-bit amd64 processor Use a plan with predictable CPU time; add vCPU capacity for VPN or inspection workloads.
Memory 1 GB RAM 1 GB can support a minimal firewall; allocate more for packages, VPNs, or larger state tables.
Disk 8 GB persistent storage At least 16 GB is used in the basic virtual-firewall example; leave room for logs and upgrades.
Network One or more compatible NICs Two virtual NICs are strongly preferred: one upstream/WAN and one private/LAN.
Access Not stated as a hardware minimum Require serial or graphical console access, custom ISO mounting, and a way to detach the ISO after installation.

Provider features that matter

  • Custom ISO support: You must be able to upload or select an AMD64 ISO and attach it as a virtual CD/DVD device.
  • Out-of-band console: A serial or graphical console is your recovery path if the web interface, firewall rules, or network assignment fails.
  • Two usable virtual interfaces: Confirm that the second NIC can connect to a private network, VLAN, virtual switch, or other VPS network rather than merely being listed in the control panel.
  • Stable address assignment: Understand whether the WAN address is DHCP, a manually assigned static address, or a routed/floating address.
  • Clear anti-spoofing rules: Some clouds require approval for additional MAC addresses, routed subnets, or traffic whose source address differs from the VPS’s assigned address.
  • Persistent disks and snapshots: Ephemeral storage can erase the firewall on deallocation. A snapshot or configuration-backup facility is useful after the first stable configuration.

Design the VPS network before you create it

Draw the traffic path first. In the common two-interface design, the provider-facing NIC is WAN and receives the address used to reach the Internet. The second NIC is LAN and connects to private workloads, a private switch, or another virtual network. pfSense then routes between them and applies NAT or explicit routing rules.

Decision axis Questions to answer before deployment
ISO and boot Can you attach a custom AMD64 ISO, choose it in boot order, and remove it after installation?
Console recovery Is a serial or graphical console available when the network is down?
Virtual NICs Can you attach two interfaces, and are their MAC addresses and names stable after reboot?
WAN addressing Does the provider supply DHCP, a static address/gateway, PPPoE, or a routed/floating address?
Private LAN Is there a private network or second interface for downstream systems?
Filtering policy Do security groups, port filters, MAC limits, or anti-spoofing controls block routed traffic?
Recovery Can you snapshot the disk, restore it, and access the console during a failed upgrade?
Capacity consistency Are CPU, bandwidth, and I/O limits predictable enough for the traffic you plan to protect?

A single-NIC installation can be useful for testing or for a design where the provider delivers a tagged trunk, but it is easier to misconfigure and gives you no naturally separate LAN side. Do not assume that adding a second virtual NIC automatically creates a connected private network; verify the provider’s switching model.

Download and verify the pfSense installation image

Use the official pfSense AMD64 ISO. The AMD64 image is intended for a physical or virtual optical drive and is suitable for virtual machines. Do not use an ARM image or a disk image intended for a different boot method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the current AMD64 ISO from the official pfSense distribution channel.
  2. Download the SHA-256 checksum supplied for that exact file.
  3. Calculate the checksum locally with a trusted utility and compare it character-for-character with the published value.
  4. Reject and download the image again if the values differ; do not mount an unverified image on an Internet-facing firewall.

The installer is an online installer: after booting, it downloads installation data from pfSense servers. The VPS therefore needs a working Internet path during installation. A blocked management network, missing default route, or provider firewall that permits console access but not outbound traffic can leave the installer unable to complete.

Create the VPS and set firmware options

Generic cloud setup

  1. Create a VM with an amd64 CPU, persistent disk, and the RAM and disk capacity selected for your workload.
  2. Attach the upstream/WAN virtual NIC and a second NIC connected to the intended private network.
  3. Upload or select the verified AMD64 ISO and attach it to the VM’s virtual CD/DVD drive.
  4. Place the virtual optical drive first in boot order for the initial installation.
  5. Record the provider’s WAN addressing details, gateway, prefix length, and any private-network information before opening the console.

Proxmox-style UEFI configuration

The documented Proxmox recipe uses the q35 machine type, OVMF UEFI firmware, an EFI disk, and a serial port. Secure boot is disabled for the UEFI guest. Other providers may label these controls differently, but the principle is the same: firmware, disk partitioning, and boot mode must agree.

If a VM installs successfully but will not boot from its disk, check whether it was installed in UEFI mode while the VM is configured for legacy BIOS, or the reverse. Some BIOS implementations do not boot GPT or ZFS layouts correctly and require UEFI. Changing firmware after installation can make a healthy disk appear unbootable, so choose the mode before installing and keep it consistent.

Install pfSense to the virtual disk

  1. Open the provider console. Use the serial or graphical console rather than relying on a network connection that does not exist yet.
  2. Boot the ISO. Confirm that the VM actually starts from the attached optical drive. If it boots the empty disk instead, correct the boot order or attachment.
  3. Accept the license terms when prompted by the installer.
  4. Choose the installation target. Select the VM’s persistent virtual disk, not the ISO device. Review the disk identifier and size before confirming, because installation erases the selected target.
  5. Select the default installation options unless your design specifically requires another filesystem or partition layout. Keep the firmware mode consistent with the VM configuration.
  6. Allow the installer to copy files and finish. The online installer may need Internet connectivity to obtain installation components.
  7. Reboot when prompted. Before the VM starts again, detach the ISO or move the virtual disk ahead of the optical drive. Leaving the ISO mounted can repeatedly launch the installer or present confusing recovery choices.

After reboot, pfSense presents a text console menu. At this stage the interfaces may have generic names such as vtnet0 and vtnet1, and their order can differ from the order you expected. Use the MAC addresses or the provider’s NIC list to identify them rather than guessing from the names.

Assign WAN and LAN from the pfSense console

  1. Choose the interface-assignment option in the console menu.
  2. Decline VLAN creation unless your design explicitly requires VLAN tagging. Creating an unused VLAN during first boot adds another dependency while you are still establishing basic connectivity.
  3. Select the interface connected to the provider’s upstream network as WAN.
  4. Select the interface connected to the private network as LAN.
  5. Confirm the assignment and allow pfSense to apply it.
  6. Read the console summary carefully. It should show the expected interface names and the current LAN address used for web configuration.

The VMware installation procedure illustrates this same mapping process: identify the two virtual adapters, assign the upstream adapter to WAN, assign the private adapter to LAN, and use the resulting console address to continue in the web configurator. On a different hypervisor, the labels may change but the traffic roles do not.

Complete the initial web configurator

From a host that can reach the LAN interface, open the HTTPS address shown on the console. If no private test host can reach it, use the console to verify the LAN address and connect a permitted system to the same private network.

  1. Sign in with the credentials shown by the initial setup process.
  2. Change the default administrator credentials immediately. Do this before exposing the web configurator to the WAN.
  3. Set the hostname, domain, and DNS choices appropriate for your environment.
  4. Choose the WAN addressing method supplied by the VPS provider: DHCP, static IPv4, or PPPoE. The online installer and initial configuration support these upstream methods; selecting the wrong one prevents a usable default route.
  5. For a static WAN, enter the exact address, prefix length, gateway, and DNS information supplied by the provider. Do not invent a gateway based only on the address.
  6. For DHCP, ensure the provider’s network actually offers DHCP on that NIC and that any required DHCP client identifier is configured.
  7. For PPPoE, enter the provider’s credentials and confirm that the VPS presents the required upstream Ethernet path.
  8. Keep management access on the LAN side while you test. Add narrowly scoped WAN management rules only if there is a documented need, and restrict them by source address.
  9. Save and apply the configuration, then reconnect using the new administrator credentials.

Fix VirtIO network problems before chasing firewall rules

pfSense includes VirtIO drivers and commonly exposes VirtIO adapters as vtnet interfaces. Netgate’s guidance warns that FreeBSD’s VirtIO behavior can require hardware checksum offloading to be disabled. A symptom can be deceptively broad: the interface appears up, but traffic between guests or between a guest and the host is corrupted, stalls, or fails intermittently.

Disable checksum offloading in pfSense

  1. Open System > Advanced.
  2. Select the Networking tab.
  3. Disable hardware checksum offloading.
  4. Save the change and reboot pfSense when prompted or when the interface state remains unreliable.

If traffic is still broken, review equivalent checksum, segmentation, or offload controls on the hypervisor and virtual switch. Change one layer at a time and test after each change so you can identify whether the fault is in pfSense, the virtual NIC, or the host network.

Validate the installation from the inside out

Do not declare the VPS firewall ready merely because the console has an IP address. Verify the control plane, the WAN data plane, and the LAN data plane separately.

  • Console identity: Confirm that the displayed WAN and LAN names match the physical roles you designed, and record their addresses.
  • WAN reachability: From pfSense diagnostics tools, test DNS resolution and outbound reachability over WAN. A successful ping to one address does not prove that DNS, routing, and return traffic all work.
  • LAN management: From a permitted private-side host, open the web configurator and confirm that the connection stays on the LAN interface.
  • NAT and routing: From a LAN test host, obtain the intended gateway and DNS settings, then test an external destination. Confirm that pfSense creates state entries and translates traffic as designed.
  • Provider controls: Review security groups, floating-IP bindings, MAC restrictions, and anti-spoofing rules. A provider can drop packets before they reach pfSense, making a correct firewall rule appear ineffective.
  • Reboot persistence: Reboot the VM from the console and confirm that the disk, firmware mode, NIC order, addresses, and configuration all return as expected.
  • Recovery artifact: After the configuration is stable, take a provider snapshot or export a pfSense configuration backup. Keep at least one copy outside the VM.

Common failure modes and precise fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Installer cannot download files No usable Internet path during the online installation Check the WAN NIC attachment, provider route, DHCP/static values, security-group egress, and DNS. Use the console to test before restarting the installer.
VM returns to the installer after reboot ISO is still mounted or remains first in boot order Detach the ISO and boot from the persistent virtual disk.
Disk is installed but will not boot UEFI/BIOS mismatch or firmware cannot boot the selected partition layout Use the same firmware mode used during installation. If the layout is GPT or ZFS, verify that the provider’s firmware supports it; UEFI may be required.
WAN and LAN are reversed NIC order or interface names were assumed Use MAC addresses and the provider NIC list, then reassign interfaces from the console.
Console works but LAN clients have no Internet Wrong WAN method, missing gateway, provider anti-spoofing, or absent NAT/rules Verify the WAN address method, default route, LAN gateway settings, outbound firewall policy, and provider filtering.
VirtIO link is up but packets fail or stall Hardware checksum or related offload incompatibility Disable hardware checksum offloading under System > Advanced > Networking, reboot, and review hypervisor offload settings.
Web configurator is unreachable Testing from the wrong side, incorrect LAN address, or a restrictive rule Read the console address, connect from the private network, and use the console to correct interface assignment or reset access.
Addresses change after a provider action Floating-IP, DHCP, or MAC binding behavior differs from the design Document the provider’s assignment model and update pfSense and upstream rules to match it.

Security and operational hardening

A VPS firewall is exposed to the provider’s virtualization layer and to the public Internet. Keep the management plane on the private interface whenever possible. If remote administration over WAN is unavoidable, allow only the required protocol from known source addresses and use an encrypted administrative path rather than opening the configurator broadly.

  • Replace default credentials before enabling any WAN-side management.
  • Keep the pfSense base system and installed packages updated through a maintenance process that includes a rollback plan.
  • Back up the configuration after every material network or policy change and test that the backup can be restored.
  • Use provider snapshots before upgrades, but do not treat a snapshot as a substitute for an exportable pfSense configuration.
  • Record the provider’s console URL, recovery procedure, IP assignment rules, private-network identifiers, and anti-spoofing requirements.
  • Monitor disk usage if verbose logging or packages are enabled; the minimum disk figures leave little room for uncontrolled log growth.

When a VPS is an appropriate perimeter firewall

Virtualized pfSense is supported, but Netgate’s virtualization guidance notes that organizations often choose standalone hardware for perimeter-firewall deployments to reduce attack surface. A VPS is most defensible when the provider offers reliable console recovery, stable virtual networking, predictable address assignment, and a clearly documented private-LAN design.

Use the VPS model when you need a remotely hosted router, a lab, a private-network gateway, or a resilient site-to-site design and you can tolerate dependence on the provider’s hypervisor and network. Reconsider it for a critical edge where a provider outage, host maintenance event, or ambiguous failover process would interrupt essential traffic. Before production, document how the VM is restored, how addresses are reattached, what happens to the second NIC, and how you will reach the console during an outage.

Final readiness checklist

  • amd64 VM with persistent storage is running in a deliberately chosen BIOS or UEFI mode.
  • Verified AMD64 ISO was detached after installation.
  • WAN and LAN roles were assigned using confirmed NIC identities, not assumed interface order.
  • WAN addressing matches the provider’s DHCP, static, or PPPoE requirements.
  • LAN management works from a permitted private-side host.
  • DNS and outbound reachability work from pfSense diagnostics.
  • LAN clients can route and, where intended, NAT to the Internet.
  • Provider security groups, floating-IP rules, MAC policies, and anti-spoofing controls match the traffic design.
  • VirtIO checksum offloading was disabled and the VM rebooted if vtnet traffic was unreliable.
  • A tested configuration backup and a provider recovery path are documented.
