For a normal C# plugin, upload the .cs file to <rust-server-root>/carbon/plugins/; a Harmony plugin belongs in <rust-server-root>/carbon/harmony/. Carbon can load the file automatically when ScriptWatchers is enabled, or you can control it from the console with c.load, c.reload, and c.unload. Carbon supports many Oxide/uMod plugins, but every plugin still has its own Rust, Carbon, dependency, and version requirements.

What you need before installing a plugin
Have these items ready before changing the server:
- A working Carbon installation for the operating system and Rust branch you run.
- Access to the Rust server root: the directory containing
RustDedicated.exeon Windows, or the equivalent dedicated-server files on Linux. - Either filesystem/host-panel access for a manual upload or an authenticated in-game administrator account for Carbon’s panel.
- The plugin’s complete distribution file, normally a C#
.csfile, plus its requirements and installation notes. - A recent backup of the server and any existing plugin configuration before replacing or removing files.
Do not treat a file extension as proof that a plugin is safe or compatible. Read the publisher’s notes for required extensions, dependencies, supported Rust versions, permissions, and any other plugins it expects.

Step 1: Install and start Carbon
Choose the appropriate Carbon build
Use Carbon’s current release for your server’s operating system and intended release channel. Production is the stable channel; Carbon also publishes edge and experimental channels for users who deliberately want less-settled builds. Build names and supported Rust branches can change, so select the current package instead of relying on an old filename copied from a tutorial.
Place Carbon at the Rust server root
Download the Carbon archive, unpack it into the Rust server root, and merge the supplied files with the existing dedicated-server installation. On Windows, this is the folder containing RustDedicated.exe. On Linux, follow the package instructions for the selected Carbon build and verify that the archive was extracted into the actual server directory rather than into an extra nested folder.

Launch and verify the first startup
Start the server using your normal launch method. Watch the console for Carbon’s startup and initialization messages, then allow the server to finish loading before installing a plugin. If Carbon itself does not initialize, fix that installation first; a plugin cannot be diagnosed reliably while the framework is missing or starting from the wrong directory.
Keep Carbon and Rust on versions that the plugin author supports. A Rust update can invalidate an otherwise unchanged plugin, and an edge or experimental Carbon build may expose compatibility issues that do not occur on production.

Meet the panel’s access requirement
The documented panel workflow requires an authenticated administrator with Rust auth level 2. Join the server with that account and open chat.
Enable the Plugins tab
- Enter
/cpanelin chat. - Open Modules.
- Select Admin.
- Choose Edit Config.
- Make sure
DisablePluginsTabis not enabled, then save the configuration.
Carbon or a hosting control panel can change labels between releases. If your screen uses slightly different wording, look for the administrator configuration that controls the Plugins tab rather than assuming the feature was removed.
Download and confirm the plugin
- Return to the Carbon panel.
- Open the Plugins tab.
- Choose a listed plugin from the available uMod or Codefling entries.
- Select Download and wait for the panel to finish.
- Open the panel’s local plugin view and confirm that the file appears there.
The panel is convenient when your host exposes it because it combines browsing, downloading, and a local loaded-plugin list. It does not remove the need to read the plugin’s requirements or inspect the server console after installation.

Install a plugin manually
Use the normal Carbon directory
For a standard C# Carbon plugin, upload the original .cs file to:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match<rust-server-root>/carbon/plugins/
That path is relative to the Rust server root, not to a separate web root or a generic server-wide plugins directory. A typical Windows layout therefore resembles:
C:PathToRustServercarbonpluginsPluginName.cs
On Linux, the equivalent is the carbon/plugins directory beneath the directory in which your Rust server files are installed. Use your host’s file manager, SFTP, or shell upload method as appropriate.
Use the Harmony directory only for Harmony plugins
Carbon identifies carbon/harmony as the destination for Harmony plugins:
<rust-server-root>/carbon/harmony/
Do not move an ordinary Oxide/uMod-style C# plugin into this directory merely because it is written in C#. Follow the publisher’s classification. If the release is described as a Harmony plugin, use the Harmony path; otherwise use carbon/plugins.

Preserve the file and inspect its requirements
Keep the publisher’s filename unless its instructions explicitly require a different name. Before uploading, read the release notes for dependencies, required extensions, permissions, configuration steps, and supported Rust or Carbon versions. A plugin downloaded from GitHub, Codefling, uMod, or another publisher source still needs the same review.
Upload without overwriting blindly
If an older copy already exists, back up its configuration and data first. Replace a file only when you know the new release is intended for the same server and that its migration notes have been followed. If you are testing an unfamiliar plugin, use a test server or maintenance window so a compile failure cannot disrupt a live community.
Automatic loading and manual control
How Carbon notices a new file
Carbon’s automatic loading relies on its ScriptWatchers setting. When ScriptWatchers is enabled and the file change is detected, Carbon can compile and load a plugin placed in the correct directory. If the watcher is disabled, delayed, or unable to see a change made through a host panel, use the console commands instead of repeatedly restarting the entire server.
Load, reload, and unload commands
Enter the following commands in the Carbon/server console, replacing plugin-name with the plugin name exactly as Carbon reports it:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
c.load plugin-name
c.reload plugin-name
c.unload plugin-name
c.load plugin-namecompiles and loads a plugin that is not currently loaded.c.reload plugin-namereloads an already loaded plugin after a file or configuration change.c.unload plugin-nameremoves the plugin from the running server without deleting its file.
Plugin names are case-sensitive in these commands. Copy the name shown in Carbon’s local list or in the console rather than guessing from a display title.

Verify the result
After an automatic or manual load, look for a successful compile/load message in the server console and confirm that the plugin appears in Carbon’s local plugin list. A visible file without a successful load message means the file exists but may have failed compilation, missed a dependency, or been placed in the wrong directory.
Panel installation versus manual upload
| Consideration | Carbon panel | Manual upload |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Requires an authenticated in-game administrator, documented as Rust auth level 2. | Requires filesystem, SFTP, or hosting-control-panel access to the Rust server. |
| Where plugins come from | Lists downloadable entries from uMod or Codefling. | Accepts files obtained from GitHub, Codefling, uMod, or another recognized publisher source. |
| Update handling | Managed browsing or host tools may make discovery and updates easier, depending on the panel version. | You track releases, download replacements, back up old files, and upload them yourself. |
| Best use case | Owners who want an in-game, guided workflow and whose host exposes Carbon’s panel. | Owners who need a specific file, use a host without the panel, or want direct control over versions. |
| Diagnosis | Use the local plugin list and server console after downloading. | Use the same local list and console, with c.load, c.reload, and c.unload when watching does not react. |
Both routes end in the same Carbon runtime. The panel does not make an incompatible plugin compatible, and a manual upload does not bypass compilation or dependency checks.
Oxide/uMod compatibility: what Carbon does and does not guarantee
Carbon is designed to provide Oxide backward compatibility, and Rust’s documented Carbon support includes an Oxide-compatible runtime hook system. That makes many existing Oxide/uMod plugins usable without a Carbon-specific rewrite.
Compatibility remains plugin-specific. Check all of the following before enabling a plugin on a production server:
- The plugin’s supported Rust and Carbon versions.
- Required libraries, extensions, or companion plugins.
- Whether it expects Oxide permissions, commands, or configuration behavior that your current build supplies.
- Whether the author has released a fix for the latest Rust update.
- Whether it is a normal plugin or a Harmony plugin, which determines its destination directory.
Do not respond to a compile error by restarting the server repeatedly. A restart does not correct missing dependencies, obsolete APIs, syntax errors, or a plugin built for a different Carbon/Rust combination.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Troubleshoot a plugin that will not load
No plugin appears after upload
- Confirm the file is inside
carbon/plugins, not a similarly named directory or an extra nested folder. - Confirm the file is a complete
.csplugin and that the upload did not rename it with an additional extension such as.cs.txt. - Check whether the release is a Harmony plugin; if so, move it to
carbon/harmony. - Verify ScriptWatchers is enabled, then run
c.load plugin-namemanually. - Check Carbon’s local plugin list and the console rather than relying on the file manager alone.
The console reports a compile error
- Capture the complete error, including the first referenced file, line, and missing type or assembly.
- Read the plugin’s release page for a build matching your current Rust and Carbon versions.
- Install or enable every dependency and extension named by the plugin author.
- Check whether a recent Rust update changed an API used by the plugin.
- Restore the previous working copy or remove the failing plugin if its author does not support the current environment.
Keep the full error when contacting the author or your host. “It does not work” omits the information needed to distinguish a syntax error from a missing dependency or an unsupported game build.
The plugin loads but its feature does not work
- Read the plugin’s permission and command instructions; loading alone may not grant players access.
- Check whether it requires a companion plugin or server extension.
- Review the plugin’s generated configuration and apply only settings documented by its author.
- Use
c.reload plugin-nameafter a documented configuration change. - Inspect the console for runtime exceptions after reproducing the problem in game.
A reload causes errors or lost state
Unload or reload only when the plugin author supports hot reloading. Back up configuration and data first, especially before replacing a major release. If a reload leaves hooks or state in an unexpected condition, stop making repeated changes, restore the known-good file, and perform a controlled server restart during maintenance.
The panel has no Plugins tab
Verify that you are authenticated at level 2 and that DisablePluginsTab is not enabled under Modules > Admin > Edit Config. Hosting panels can expose an older or customized Carbon interface, so consult the host’s current Carbon-panel instructions if those labels are absent. Manual upload remains available when you have server-file access.
A safe update and rollback routine
- Record the current Carbon version, Rust branch, plugin version, and any required dependencies.
- Back up the plugin’s configuration and data, along with the current
.csfile. - Read the new release notes for migrations, renamed settings, or minimum Carbon/Rust versions.
- Unload the plugin with
c.unload plugin-nameif the author recommends unloading before replacement. - Upload the new file to the correct directory, preserving its required filename.
- Load it with
c.load plugin-name, or let ScriptWatchers detect it. - Watch the complete console output and test the plugin’s commands and gameplay behavior.
- If it fails, unload it, restore the backed-up file and configuration, and document the error before seeking an updated build.
This procedure separates a bad plugin update from a Carbon installation problem and gives you a known-good rollback path.
Common questions
Can I install an Oxide plugin without converting it?
Often, yes. Carbon is intended to be Oxide/uMod compatible, but the individual plugin still has to support your current Rust and Carbon environment and satisfy its dependencies. Check the plugin’s own requirements before enabling it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I have to restart the server after every plugin change?
No. With ScriptWatchers enabled, Carbon may detect a file change automatically. You can also use the documented load, reload, and unload commands. A restart is appropriate when the plugin or its author specifically requires one, or when a controlled recovery is safer than repeated hot reloads.
Where should a plugin that includes several files go?
Follow the package’s instructions. The normal C# entry file belongs in carbon/plugins; a package explicitly identified as Harmony belongs in carbon/harmony. Do not scatter supporting files into arbitrary directories, because the plugin may expect a particular layout.
What information should I provide when reporting a failure?
Include the exact plugin version, Carbon and Rust versions, operating system, required dependencies, installation path, and the complete console error. Also state whether the failure occurred during automatic detection, c.load, or a reload.
