Set player_damage to false in the dedicated server’s server_config.sii, then restart the server. Stop the server before editing; otherwise, the running process or hosting panel may overwrite your change. On managed hosts, the same setting is usually exposed as a damage or player-collision toggle.

What the setting changes
player_damage controls whether players can inflict damage on one another during a multiplayer session. With the value set to false, a test convoy should no longer let one player damage another player’s truck or cargo through a collision.

The parameter is used by dedicated servers for both Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) and American Truck Simulator (ATS). A host guide from MintServers describes the server configuration file as shared between the two dedicated-server variants, but installation layouts still vary, so verify the file loaded by your own server.
Third-party references commonly list true as the default. Treat that as a reference rather than a guarantee: inspect the value in your own file before changing it, because a host image, template, or previous administrator edit may have changed the default.

Before editing: stop the correct server
- Tell connected players that the server will be restarted.
- Use the host control panel’s Stop action, or stop the dedicated-server process on a self-hosted machine.
- Wait until the panel reports that the server is stopped or the process has exited. Do not edit while the server is still writing its configuration.
- Make a backup copy of
server_config.sii. A simple duplicate in the same folder lets you restore the previous value if another setting is changed accidentally.
Stopping first matters because the active process can save its in-memory configuration during shutdown. If you edit while it is running, your manual value may disappear when the process writes the file again.
Find server_config.sii
The SCS Modding Wiki places the file in the server or game home folder. The exact directory depends on the operating system, installation method, account running the server, and hosting provider.

Host guides give a path such as:
.local/share/Euro Truck Simulator 2/Look in the home directory of the user that runs the dedicated server. A service account, container, or launch script can have a different home directory from your normal login, so searching only your personal home folder may find the wrong file.
Other installations
On other systems, guides describe the game’s Documents or local-share folder. The server’s own home directory is the authoritative location: use the file beside the server’s other configuration data, not a similarly named file belonging to a client installation or a separate profile.

Hosted servers
Most managed panels hide the filesystem path. Open the server’s configuration or settings page after stopping the instance. If the panel provides both a graphical setting and a file editor, use one method consistently and check the resulting file when possible. A panel template may regenerate configuration values on startup, so the panel’s saved value takes precedence over an unrelated local copy.
Change the parameter manually
- Open the server’s
server_config.siiin a plain-text editor. - Search for the line beginning with
player_damage. - Change its value to the Boolean shown by the host guides:
player_damage: false- Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Start the server again from the control panel or launch command.
- Join with a test convoy and verify the result before inviting everyone back.
Use the exact lowercase value false shown above. Do not replace the line with a quoted string, a number, or a second copy of the parameter. If the file already contains a player_damage entry, edit that entry instead of adding another one.
Disable it from a hosting panel
Managed hosts expose the same server variable under different labels. The control may be available only after selecting the dedicated-server configuration rather than a general account setting.

After changing a panel toggle, save the settings and restart the server. Some panels write the underlying server_config.sii only when you press Save or when the server starts; stopping and starting ensures the generated file is loaded.

ETS2 and ATS considerations
The parameter name and Boolean format are intended for the dedicated-server configuration used by both games. The game-specific folder name can differ, however: an ETS2 installation may use an Euro Truck Simulator 2 directory, while an ATS installation can use its own game-home directory.
- Confirm that the server process you restart is the one players actually join.
- If ETS2 and ATS are installed on the same machine, do not assume that editing one game’s profile changes the other.
- If your host offers separate instances, apply the setting to each instance that should run without player damage.
- Use the value shown in the file as the source of truth; third-party guides report defaults, not a promise for every game or server build.
Traffic must also be considered
G-Portal’s guidance notes that traffic must be disabled when player damage is disabled. In practice, that means a no-player-damage policy is not necessarily a no-collision or no-risk policy: non-player traffic can still be relevant to the server’s collision rules unless you configure it separately.

If your goal is a completely consequence-free convoy, review the server’s traffic option in the same configuration area and apply the host’s documented traffic setting. Do not assume that changing player_damage automatically changes traffic behavior; the two controls are separate in the host guidance.
Optional collision-related settings
Player damage is only one of the settings that can affect how collisions feel. These related options have different purposes and should not be substituted for player_damage.

Because the wording and defaults for related variables differ between third-party references, change them only when you understand the behavior you want and have a rollback copy of the file.
Docker and automated server images
If the server runs in a Docker-based convoy image, the image may expose an environment variable instead of expecting a direct file edit. The documented variable is ETS_SERVER_PLAYER_DAMAGE, whose default is reported as true.
For that deployment style, set the variable to the image’s documented false value in the container or compose configuration, recreate or restart the container, and then inspect the generated server configuration. Editing a file inside a temporary container can be lost when the container is recreated; the persistent environment or compose definition is the setting that must survive deployment.
Do not apply the Docker variable blindly to a conventional installation. If your server is not using that image, edit the native server_config.sii or use the host panel instead.

Verify that player damage is really off
- Start the server after saving the change.
- Connect two test players to the same convoy.
- Use a controlled, low-speed contact in a safe area rather than testing at high speed or near other traffic.
- Check both trucks and their cargo before and after the contact.
- Confirm that the server instance you tested is the same instance your community normally uses.
The expected result is that one player cannot damage the other player’s vehicle or cargo through the tested player-to-player collision. If damage still occurs, do not assume the Boolean was ignored; first confirm that the correct configuration file and server instance were changed.
Troubleshooting when the change has no effect
The value reverted after restart
- Stop the server again before editing.
- Check whether the panel regenerates
server_config.siifrom a settings page or template. - Save the panel’s Player Damage or Damage between players option, then restart.
- Compare the file after shutdown and after startup to see which component rewrote it.
You edited a file, but players still take damage
- Confirm the path belongs to the account or container that launches the dedicated server.
- Check for separate ETS2 and ATS instances or multiple server profiles.
- Search the active file for the exact line
player_damage: false. - Make sure the server was actually stopped and started after the edit, not merely refreshed in a browser.
- Run the controlled two-player test again after identifying the active file.
The panel has no obvious damage option
Open its advanced configuration or server-file editor and search for player_damage. If the provider does not expose files, ask its support team which configuration screen writes the dedicated server’s damage variable; do not create a second, guessed configuration file.
Only some collisions behave differently
Separate player damage from traffic, menu ghosting, and teleport-collision behavior. Those systems can have independent settings, so inspect each one before concluding that player_damage failed.
Safe operating checklist
- Schedule the change when a restart will not interrupt a delivery or event.
- Stop the server before touching the file.
- Back up the original configuration.
- Edit only the existing
player_damageentry. - Save as plain text and preserve the
.siiextension. - Restart the correct server instance.
- Test with two players before announcing the change.
- Record the original value so you can restore
trueif the community later wants normal damage.
Restoring normal damage
To reverse the policy, stop the server, change the same line to:
player_damage: trueSave, start the server, and run the same controlled convoy check. If a hosting panel manages the value, enable its Player Damage or Damage between players option instead of editing a generated file directly.
Version and documentation limits
No official SCS parameter table confirming the current-version wording for player_damage was available in the captured documentation, and the dedicated-server wiki material was only partially available. The procedure above follows the configuration format and host instructions that are documented, but labels, defaults, and paths can change between server builds and hosting images. When your installation disagrees with a guide, trust the active file or panel used by your server and verify the result in a test convoy.
