To install PS3HEN, first check your PS3’s exact model and System Software version in Settings → System Settings → System Information. Then confirm that the current PS3HEN installer supports your console and firmware, determine whether the route requires Hybrid Firmware (HFW), and follow the official installer’s on-screen instructions. PS3HEN is a Homebrew Enabler, not the same thing as full custom firmware (CFW).
Before you begin: check the PS3 model and System Software version
On the XMB, open Settings → System Settings → System Information. Record the System Software version and the console model shown on its label or in its system information. Model, region, retail/debug status, and firmware can affect the correct route, so do not start an update based only on a general compatibility claim.

The PS3Xploit project README identifies PS3HEN release 3.6.0 and lists CEX HFW support through 4.93.1. Firmware support can change: check the PS3HEN project README and official PS3Xploit installer and help page immediately before proceeding. Confirm that the listed support matches your console and firmware; do not assume a version number alone establishes that every PS3 is eligible for every modification.
PS3HEN and CFW are different
PS3HEN is a Homebrew Enabler that provides homebrew capability after you enable it from the XMB. The project and community guide describe HEN as useful across PS3 models, particularly models that cannot use CFW. That broad HEN support is not a model-by-model CFW eligibility list.

The PS3HEN README says CFWs can be used for testing but are not recommended. That is not an endorsement or an instruction to install CFW on a particular console.
Choose the HFW path for your installed firmware
The ConsoleMods guide distinguishes these firmware ranges for its procedure. Treat them as a route-selection guide, not a substitute for checking the current official installer directions.

- 4.80 through 4.82: the guide says the HFW update step can be skipped for its procedure.
- Older versions: the guide provides a separate route. Consult its current instructions and the official project pages for the exact steps applicable to your version.
Use the ConsoleMods PS3HEN guide alongside the official project pages. If your firmware, model, or console status does not clearly match the instructions, stop and verify the exact combination rather than selecting a nearby version by guesswork.

Prepare for a USB-based update, if your route needs one
A USB drive is for the USB-based preparation path; it is not mandatory for every browser-based method. The community guide specifies at least 256 MiB of free space and a drive formatted as FAT32 with an MBR partition scheme.

- Format the USB drive as FAT32 with an MBR partition scheme, if using the USB update route.
- Download the HFW PUP file from the destination currently linked by the guide or official project pages.
- Compare the downloaded file’s MD5 checksum with the value shown on that download page. Do not install it if the values differ; download again from the official destination and recheck.
Use the official project destinations rather than a file link copied from an old guide, because supported files and directions can change.
Install PS3HEN
After confirming the supported firmware route and completing any required HFW update, use the PS3Xploit installer’s current instructions. The community guide describes a PS3 browser auto-installer and alternate methods; the right method depends on the firmware and the current installer directions.

- Open the official PS3Xploit installer and help page and follow the instructions for your confirmed console and firmware combination.
- If your path requires HFW, install the verified HFW PUP using the on-screen system update process specified by the guide.
- Run the appropriate PS3HEN installer method and follow the messages displayed by the installer. Do not interrupt the process while it is working.
- When installation completes, return to the XMB and look for the Enable HEN item.
The community guide notes that an installation can fail or the installer can crash, in which case another attempt may be necessary. Follow the current guide’s recovery instructions; do not treat a failed attempt as proof that another firmware or file is appropriate.
Enable HEN and understand what changes after installation
After installation, select Enable HEN from the XMB when you want to use homebrew. The guide says HEN must be enabled after every console start, and that it can be enabled while the console is disconnected from the internet once installation is complete.
