ReShade installs against the game executable—not in the usual Sims 4 Mods folder.
Before you install: check whether Sims 4 is using DX9 or DX11
The ReShade installer must be configured for the graphics API and executable that The Sims 4 actually uses. EA forum guidance associates TS4_x64.exe with DirectX 11 and TS4_DX9_x64.exe with DirectX 9. ReShade supports both Direct3D 9 and Direct3D 11, among other APIs.
Check the game’s graphics options and any EA app or Steam launch options before setup. EA’s August 19, 2025 update discusses DirectX 11 and says players whose GPUs are not Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD will continue to use DX9. Renderer availability and defaults can change with updates, so don’t rely on an older tutorial’s choice without checking your current setup. Install ReShade for The Sims 4
- Download ReShade from its official site. Use reshade.me, rather than an installer repackaged by an unknown file host. The site lists supported graphics APIs and the current installer requirement; its page lists .NET Framework 4.8, which may matter if the installer will not run.
- Open the installer and locate the Sims 4 executable. Browse to the game’s installation folder and select
TS4_x64.exefor DX11 orTS4_DX9_x64.exefor DX9, based on the renderer you confirmed above. - Choose the matching graphics API. Select Direct3D 11 for the DX11 executable or Direct3D 9 for the DX9 executable. The available installer labels may change between releases, so follow the API names shown in the current installer rather than relying on old button-by-button instructions.
- Select shader effects if setup offers them. Install the effects required by the preset you intend to use. A preset file does not necessarily include the shader effects it refers to.
- Launch The Sims 4 and open ReShade’s in-game interface. ReShade can create or select presets through its interface. Presets are
.iniconfiguration files; select one there or create your own.
Use a preset without confusing it with shader files
A downloaded preset may refer to effects that were not installed during setup. If the preset loads but its intended effects are missing, add the required effects with the ReShade installer or follow the preset creator’s current installation directions. Get presets from a creator or source you trust; EA says it does not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific Mods or Custom Content in its Sims 4 mod guidance.

ReShade does not go in the Sims 4 Mods folder
EA’s instructions to place conventional mod files in Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods, enable custom content and mods in Game Options, and relaunch apply to ordinary Sims 4 mods and custom content. ReShade is set up for the game executable and graphics API instead, so putting its setup files in that Mods folder is not the installation method described here. EA also notes that ordinary Sims 4 mods are unavailable on console.
Fix a missing ReShade overlay or effects
- The overlay disappeared after changing graphics mode: check whether the game now launches in DX9 or DX11, then configure ReShade for the corresponding executable and API. A setup for one renderer may not load when the game is using the other.
- The overlay appears, but the preset’s effects do not: check whether the preset’s required shader effects were installed. Add missing effects through the installer or use the creator’s current directions.
- The installer will not run: check the current ReShade site for its listed .NET Framework requirement and installation information: ReShade official site.
- You want an automated Sims-focused setup: Shade The Sims describes a third-party installer that detects the Sims 4 location and installs shaders and presets. It is not an EA or official ReShade installer; review its current project information at Shade The Sims before deciding whether to use it.
Platform limits
This procedure is for Windows. The available official EA and ReShade information does not establish a supported Mac installation path, so these Windows executable instructions should not be treated as Mac guidance. It is not a console installation guide either.
