Voice chat is a separate network service, not an extension of normal Minecraft traffic. A correct installation can still show as disconnected if the UDP port is blocked, the client build does not match the server, or a proxy has not been configured.

First identify the server platform and the Minecraft version it runs. Simple Voice Chat publishes separate builds for Fabric, NeoForge, Forge, Quilt, Bukkit, Spigot, Paper and proxy platforms. Choose the build that matches both your platform and Minecraft version; do not select a file merely because its name contains “voice chat.”
- Access to the server’s file manager or filesystem.
- Permission to restart the server.
- A way to open a separate UDP port in your firewall, router or hosting panel.
- A compatible client component for each player who wants to speak or hear voice chat.
Players without the client component may still be able to join the Minecraft server, but they cannot use the voice-chat features.

Choose the correct installation path

The distinction matters. A mod-loader server expects a mod in mods, while Bukkit, Spigot and Paper load a plugin from plugins. Putting a plugin JAR in a mod-loader directory, or a mod JAR in plugins, will not produce a working installation.
Install Simple Voice Chat on the server
1. Match the download to the server
Open the Simple Voice Chat project listing and select the server file for your exact platform and Minecraft version. A Fabric server needs the Fabric build; a Paper server needs the Bukkit/Paper plugin; a proxy needs its proxy-specific component in addition to the backend installation. Keep the downloaded JAR unchanged unless the project’s instructions explicitly say otherwise.
2. Upload the server component
- Stop the Minecraft server before changing its files.
- For Fabric, NeoForge, Forge or Quilt, upload the matching mod JAR to the server’s
modsfolder. - For Bukkit, Spigot or Paper, upload the matching plugin JAR to the server’s
pluginsfolder. - Check that there is not an older or platform-incompatible copy of Simple Voice Chat in the same directory. Duplicate JARs can make it unclear which build is loading.
If your host uses a web panel, its file manager normally exposes these directories directly. On a self-hosted machine, they are relative to the server installation directory—the folder containing the server’s normal files and launch setup.
3. Restart and confirm startup
Start or restart the server after uploading the JAR. A restart is required for the component to load and create its configuration directory. Read the startup log and confirm that the voice-chat service starts without a compatibility or dependency error before asking players to test.
If no voice-chat startup entry appears, stop the server and recheck the platform, Minecraft version and directory. A file in plugins will not load on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt, and a mod in mods will not load as a Bukkit-style plugin.

Install the client component for players
Every player who will use voice chat needs the compatible client component. The required client installation depends on the player’s Minecraft setup and must match the server’s supported platform and Minecraft version. Install it for each participant before testing.

Installing only the server JAR does not give an unmodified client access to voice features. Conversely, installing a client component without a functioning server service leaves the player unable to connect to voice.
After the client component is installed, launch the same Minecraft version used by the server and join normally. Players who do not install the component may be able to play using text chat, but they will not be able to use Simple Voice Chat.
Configure the voice-chat server
Find the generated file
The first successful restart creates the server configuration. On Fabric, NeoForge, Forge and Quilt, open config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties. On Bukkit, Spigot and Paper, open plugins/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties.
If the file is missing, restart the server once more and inspect the log for a loading error. Also verify that you are looking in the server’s active directory rather than a backup, test instance or similarly named folder.

Keep or change the port
The default voice-chat port is 24454 UDP. You can leave it unchanged when that port is available, or set the configuration’s port property to another unused port. Whatever number you choose must be opened externally on the same protocol and directed to the same server.
Do not reuse the normal Minecraft server port for voice traffic. The configuration reference states that audio packets always use UDP on the configured port, independently of the game server’s other networking, and warns that reusing the Minecraft port can allow query traffic to crash the server. Choose a separate UDP port instead.
Apply configuration changes
- Stop the server before editing the properties file.
- Change only the required value, such as the
portproperty, and preserve the file’s plain-text format. - Save the file and start the server.
- Confirm in the log that the voice service starts on the port you selected.
Open the UDP port
Voice audio does not travel through the ordinary Minecraft connection. The server therefore needs a reachable UDP port in addition to whatever port players use to join the game. The default is 24454 UDP; without opening that port, voice chat will not work.
Self-hosted server
- Allow inbound UDP traffic for the configured voice port in the operating system firewall.
- If the server is behind a home router, create a port-forwarding rule for that UDP port to the server’s local address.
- Make sure the public address players use resolves to the router or host that owns the forwarding rule.
- Restart the voice service after changing the port or forwarding rule.
The external port, protocol and destination must agree. Opening TCP while leaving UDP blocked does not expose the audio service.
Managed hosting
Use the hosting provider’s network or allocation panel to expose a UDP port. Some panels require you to request an additional allocation, select UDP explicitly, or enter the port in a dedicated voice-chat field. Follow the provider’s Simple Voice Chat procedure when one is supplied; managed hosts handle firewall and routing differently from a home server.

If the panel does not offer UDP support or gives no way to assign a separate port, contact the provider before changing the configuration. A locally edited port cannot make an unavailable provider-side port reachable.
Set up the client microphone and speakers
Join the server with the compatible client component installed, then open the voice-chat GUI with V. Enter its settings, choose the microphone and speaker devices you want to use, and run the built-in microphone and speaker tests.

Use the tests before troubleshooting the network. They separate a local device-selection problem from a server-connection problem: a client that cannot record or play the test sound needs its input or output selection corrected, while a client that passes both tests but remains disconnected needs the server, port or compatibility checked.
A particular headset is not required. Any microphone and speaker combination recognized by the client can be selected through the voice-chat settings.

1. Confirm platform and version compatibility
Compare the server’s Minecraft version and platform with the downloaded server component and each player’s client component. A Fabric build is not interchangeable with a Paper plugin, and a build for a different Minecraft version can prevent the service from loading or the client from completing its connection.
2. Check the installation directory
For mod-loader servers, verify the JAR is in mods. For Bukkit, Spigot or Paper, verify the plugin is in plugins. Remove an obsolete or duplicate copy, restart, and look for the voice-service startup entry in the log.
3. Check the configured port
Read the active voicechat-server.properties file and note its port value. If it is not the default, open that exact number as UDP in the provider panel, firewall and router. Testing or forwarding 24454 while the file specifies another port will not work.
4. Check every network layer
For a self-hosted server, inspect the host firewall and router forwarding rule. For a managed server, inspect the provider’s allocation or firewall panel. The port must be reachable from outside the local network; opening it only on the server machine is insufficient when a router or provider firewall sits in front of it.
5. Check proxy configuration
Velocity and BungeeCord deployments require the proxy-specific setup as well as the backend server setup. Installing the backend component alone does not guarantee that the proxy exposes the voice port. Follow the project’s proxy instructions and apply the matching configuration to the proxy and backend.
6. Recheck the client component
If one player remains disconnected while others work, compare that player’s client installation and Minecraft version with a working player’s setup. A player can join the game without the client component, so successful server login does not prove that voice chat is installed on that client.
Common installation mistakes
- Using the wrong file type: a plugin JAR was uploaded to
mods, or a mod JAR was uploaded toplugins. - Skipping the restart: the component cannot create its configuration or start its service until the server loads it.
- Opening TCP instead of UDP: audio uses UDP on the configured port.
- Opening the wrong number: the firewall or forwarding rule still uses
24454after the configuration was changed. - Reusing the Minecraft port: voice traffic should use its own UDP port.
- Testing with an unmodified client: joining the server is possible without voice features, but speaking and hearing require the client component.
- Forgetting the proxy: a proxy network needs its proxy-specific voice setup in addition to backend installation.

The practical choice is determined by the server you already run. Do not switch platforms solely to add voice chat; select the corresponding Simple Voice Chat build and preserve the rest of the server configuration.
Installation checklist
- Server platform and Minecraft version identified.
- Matching Simple Voice Chat server build downloaded.
- Mod placed in
mods, or plugin placed inplugins. - Server restarted and the voice service confirmed in the log.
- Configuration file located in the platform-specific path.
- UDP port
24454opened, or the replacement port opened if you changed it. - Every intended voice user has the compatible client component.
- Each client has selected a microphone and speaker and passed the built-in tests.
- Proxy-specific setup completed where Velocity or BungeeCord is involved.
What to remember
Simple Voice Chat needs two installations and two connections: the server component must match the server platform, and every voice user needs a matching client component. Minecraft gameplay uses its normal connection, while voice audio uses a separate UDP port—24454 by default. Once the correct JAR is in the correct directory, the server has been restarted, and that UDP port is reachable, the in-game V menu can be used to select and test audio devices.
