Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallSteam works on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS through Ubuntu’s APT repository, Valve’s own Debian package or APT repository, Snap, and Flatpak. For most gaming PCs, start with Ubuntu’s native APT package because it offers conventional filesystem access and Debian-style integration. Choose Snap for the simplest Ubuntu-managed setup, or Flatpak if you already use Flatpak and prefer application isolation.
Install one format first rather than installing APT, Snap and Flatpak simultaneously. Multiple installations can create duplicate launchers, separate libraries and confusing troubleshooting.

Choose an installation method
| Method | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
Ubuntu APT (steam-installer) |
Most Ubuntu gamers | Conventional integration and broad filesystem access | May require Multiverse, multiarch and first-run dependencies |
| Valve .deb or APT repository | Users wanting Valve’s direct package source | Valve-supplied launcher and device rules | More manual setup |
| Snap | Beginners and Ubuntu-first users | Simple installation and automatic updates | Sandbox permissions can affect drives and hardware |
| Flatpak | Existing Flatpak users | Isolation and an independent distribution channel | Flathub’s Steam package is community-maintained, not Valve-supported |
Ubuntu describes Snap applications as sandboxed and automatically updated, while traditional .deb applications use ordinary package management and have conventional system access. That does not make one format universally faster: performance depends on drivers, storage, Proton, the filesystem and the game.

Before installing Steam
- Use a supported 64-bit installation of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat).
- Have a working internet connection for the bootstrapper, client updates and game downloads.
- Install working graphics drivers, including Vulkan support where required by Proton games.
- Keep enough free storage for Steam, shader caches and your games.
- Use an account with
sudoaccess. - Expect Steam to use 32-bit components. Many Steam games and graphics libraries still need the
i386architecture.
Native Linux games do not require Proton. Windows games may work through Proton, but compatibility is specific to each game, launcher, anti-cheat system and configuration.
Method 1: Install Steam with Ubuntu APT
Install Ubuntu’s package
Ubuntu’s repository package is named steam-installer. The multiverse repository may already be enabled, but running the following setup is a practical way to check and enable it:
sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
sudo apt update
sudo apt install steam-installer
steam-installer is a launcher/bootstrapper rather than a complete, permanently bundled Steam client. It can install related packages such as Steam libraries, device rules and 32-bit graphics dependencies. The first launch may download the current Steam client or request additional dependencies.
Start it from the application menu or run:
steam
If add-apt-repository reports that Multiverse is already enabled, continue with apt update. Avoid adding duplicate repository entries manually.
Ubuntu’s APT documentation provides background on package installation and repository management.
Install Valve’s downloaded .deb
Valve publishes a Linux launcher package from its Steam for Linux launcher page. After downloading it, use APT from the directory containing the file:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./steam_latest.deb
The ./ is important: it tells APT that this is a local file. Your browser may save the package under a different filename, so check with:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ls -lh ~/Downloads
APT is preferable to dpkg -i here because it can resolve dependencies. If a previous operation left dependencies incomplete, run:

sudo apt --fix-broken install
sudo apt install ./steam_latest.deb
Valve’s package is a bootstrapper containing a minimal Steam installation, the self-update mechanism and Steam device rules. It is distinct from Ubuntu’s steam-installer package.
Advanced: use Valve’s APT repository
Valve also documents an APT repository. This route is more direct but is best suited to readers comfortable managing repository keys and architectures:
sudo install -d -m 0755 /usr/share/keyrings
wget -O- https://repo.steampowered.com/steam/archive/stable/steam.gpg
| sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/steam.gpg >/dev/null
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/steam-stable.list >/dev/null <<'EOF'
deb [arch=amd64,i386 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/steam.gpg] https://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ stable steam
deb-src [arch=amd64,i386 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/steam.gpg] https://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ stable steam
EOF
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo apt install
libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64
libgl1-mesa-dri:i386
libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64
libgl1-mesa-glx:i386
steam-launcher
Repository key locations and package instructions can change, so check Valve’s current repository page before applying this advanced method. Do not add both Ubuntu’s and Valve’s Steam packages casually; choose the source you intend to maintain.

Method 2: Install Steam with Snap
Using Ubuntu App Center
- Press the Super key and open App Center.
- Search for Steam.
- Select Steam and click Install.
- Authenticate when prompted.
- Launch Steam from the applications overview.
Ubuntu’s App Center primarily presents Snap applications. It does not directly install Flatpak applications.
Using the terminal
sudo snap install steam
snap list steam
snap run steam
Snap is a convenient Ubuntu-integrated option with automatic updates, but its confinement can affect hardware inspection, recording, voice chat or libraries on other drives. These interfaces are optional troubleshooting steps, not mandatory commands for every installation:
sudo snap connect steam:system-observe
sudo snap connect steam:hardware-observe
sudo snap connect steam:audio-record
The first two can help with system and hardware detection. audio-record is relevant to voice chat or recording features. Inspect the current connections with:
snap connections steam
Method 3: Install Steam with Flatpak
Flathub’s Steam application ID is com.valvesoftware.Steam. Flathub identifies this package as community-maintained and says it is not officially supported, affiliated with or verified by Valve.
Recommended Free Tools
Install Flatpak and GNOME’s Flatpak integration:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install flatpak gnome-software-plugin-flatpak
Add Flathub once:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
Install and launch Steam:
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam
These steps follow Flathub’s Ubuntu setup instructions.

Give Flatpak access to an external library
Flatpak applications cannot automatically access every location on your system. Grant access only to the library directory:
flatpak override --user
--filesystem=/mnt/games/SteamLibrary
com.valvesoftware.Steam
Replace the example path with the actual mount point, then restart Steam. Do not grant access to your entire home directory or filesystem without a specific reason. See Flathub’s Steam page for the package’s permissions and status.
Complete Steam’s first-run setup
- Launch Steam and sign in or create an account.
- Allow the client to update.
- Confirm that the Store, Library and Settings pages load.
- Connect a controller before launching a game if you plan to use one.
- Install a small free or already-owned game before moving a large library.
For games stored on another drive, confirm that the drive is mounted and visible to your chosen package format. NTFS and other Windows-oriented filesystems can introduce permission, case-sensitivity, symlink or Proton-prefix problems; they can work, but are not always as trouble-free as a native Linux filesystem.
Enable Proton for Windows games
In Steam, open Settings and find the Steam Play or Compatibility area; exact labels can vary with Steam client updates.
- Enable Steam Play for supported titles.
- Enable Steam Play for all other titles if you want to test unverified games.
For one game, right-click it, choose Properties, open Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select a Proton version.
Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer, not an emulator, and it does not guarantee that every Windows game will work. Check the exact game on ProtonDB for reports about launchers, anti-cheat, multiplayer, codecs, controllers and launch options. Ubuntu’s Proton configuration guide covers Steam Play setup.
Controllers, graphics and storage
Controllers
Connect the controller before launching the game, then open Steam’s controller settings and confirm that it appears. Enable the relevant Steam Input support when a game needs it. Big Picture mode or the game’s controller configuration can help distinguish client detection problems from game-specific mapping problems.
Graphics and Vulkan
Black screens and crashes often involve the GPU driver, Vulkan stack, Proton version, overlays or game-specific settings. Installing Steam successfully does not prove that the graphics stack is ready for every game.

External libraries
Native APT installations generally have the least packaging-specific filesystem friction. Snap may need additional access or may behave differently with external mounts. Flatpak requires a narrowly scoped filesystem override. If a Snap game fails from another drive, test the same game from Steam’s default storage device first, as Ubuntu recommends in its Steam troubleshooting documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting
APT cannot find Steam
apt policy steam-installer
sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
sudo apt update
sudo apt install steam-installer
If there is still no candidate, check the release and architecture:
. /etc/os-release
echo "$PRETTY_NAME"
dpkg --print-architecture
Ubuntu derivatives may use different repositories or package names, so do not assume that every derivative matches Ubuntu 24.04.
APT reports broken dependencies
sudo apt --fix-broken install
sudo apt update
sudo apt install steam-installer
dpkg --print-foreign-architectures
If 32-bit support is absent, enable it and refresh package metadata:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
The downloaded .deb will not install
Check the actual filename, architecture and package candidates:
ls -lh ~/Downloads
dpkg --print-architecture
apt policy steam-installer steam-launcher
Then install the local file with APT:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./steam_latest.deb
Snap installs but does not launch
snap run steam
sudo snap connect steam:system-observe
sudo snap connect steam:hardware-observe
snap connections steam
snap info steam
snap list steam
The first command exposes terminal output. Restart after changing graphics or Steam-related packages. Ubuntu lists these checks in its Snap and Steam troubleshooting guidance.
Flatpak cannot see the library
flatpak list | grep -i steam
flatpak override --user
--filesystem=/mnt/games/SteamLibrary
com.valvesoftware.Steam
Restart Steam after changing the override and make sure the path is the mounted library directory, not merely the drive’s device name.
A Proton game crashes or shows a black screen
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- Try Proton Experimental.
- Try another stable Proton version.
- Disable overlays and unusual launch options.
- Confirm that the GPU driver and Vulkan stack are working.
- Check ProtonDB for the exact game.
- Test without an external drive or custom filesystem.
- Collect Steam and game logs before requesting support.
There are duplicate Steam launchers
Check which formats are installed:
apt policy steam-installer steam-launcher
snap list steam
flatpak list | grep -i steam
Choose one installation, remove the others only after confirming where your game libraries and saves are stored, and then launch Steam again from the remaining package.

Remove Steam safely
Removing the application is not necessarily the same as deleting the Steam library or user data. Back up saves and confirm library locations before deleting anything.
Snap
sudo snap remove --purge steam
The --purge option avoids creating a potentially large automatic Snap snapshot containing Steam data. Ubuntu warns that such snapshots can include the game library.
Flatpak
flatpak uninstall com.valvesoftware.Steam
flatpak uninstall --unused
Remove unused runtimes only if you no longer need them for other Flatpak applications.

Remove only the package you actually installed:

If you installed Valve’s package instead, use steam-launcher rather than removing both package names blindly:
sudo apt remove steam-launcher
sudo apt autoremove
Do not remove steam-devices if another Steam installation or another application still needs its device rules.
Final recommendation
For a conventional Ubuntu 24.04 gaming setup, install steam-installer from Ubuntu’s Multiverse repository first. Use Valve’s .deb or APT repository when you specifically want Valve’s direct package source. Choose Snap when simple Ubuntu-managed updates and confinement matter more than unrestricted filesystem access. Choose Flatpak when you already use Flatpak and are comfortable granting explicit access to external libraries.
Whichever route you choose, test the client with a small game, confirm your controller and graphics stack, and configure Proton only for games that need it.

Is Steam available on Ubuntu 24.04?
Yes. Ubuntu 24.04 supports Steam through Ubuntu APT, Valve’s .deb or APT repository, Snap and Flatpak. These are separate packaging choices, so install one first rather than all of them.
Why does Steam need 32-bit libraries?
Steam and many games still use 32-bit components, including 32-bit graphics libraries. Valve’s repository instructions therefore enable the i386 architecture and install both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics packages.
Can I install Steam on an external SSD?
Usually, but the result depends on the filesystem, mount options and package permissions. Snap and Flatpak may need explicit access, while NTFS can cause Proton permission or compatibility problems. Test the default Steam storage location first.
Can I switch from Snap to APT without redownloading games?
Often, if the new installation can access the existing library directory, but package sandboxes and filesystem permissions can prevent immediate detection. Keep the library intact, install the new format, add its library location in Steam, and remove the old package only after verifying the games appear.
