Install a DayZ Workshop mod through Steam
1. Open the DayZ Workshop
- Open Steam and select Community or the game’s Workshop link.
- Open the DayZ Workshop for the DayZ title, not a Workshop page for another game.
- Use the search box, browse categories, or open the collection link supplied by the server administrator.
DayZ Workshop listings can be categorized as Animation, Character, Economy, Environment, Equipment, Mechanics, Sound, Props, Terrain, Vehicle, Weapon, or Dependency. Category labels help narrow a search, but they do not prove that an item works on your chosen server.
If you are starting from a server browser listing, write down the exact server name before searching. Similar titles can belong to different operators, maps, or mod packs. Server announcements and the operator’s published collection are more useful than choosing a mod solely from a screenshot or subscription count.

Read the current description, supported map or server context, change notes, and dependency information. A mod can be perfectly valid yet unusable on a particular server because the server runs a different map, version, or mod collection. Look for required companion items and any instructions from the author or server operator.
Do not treat a high subscription count, a recent screenshot, or a familiar name as a compatibility guarantee. The item page is the authoritative place for its current requirements and update status.
Pay attention to whether the listing is a dependency rather than a playable feature by itself. A dependency may be required by another item and still need its own subscription and download. If the description names a map, economy package, weapon pack, or framework, compare that information with the server’s own requirements before adding it.
3. Select Subscribe
On the item’s Workshop detail page, click Subscribe. Steam’s Workshop documentation says subscribed content is, in most cases, available the next time the game starts. The subscription records your interest; it does not necessarily mean every file has finished downloading at that instant.
Repeat this step for every required item. If a server publishes a collection, open each listed item and subscribe to all required entries rather than assuming one subscription includes its dependencies automatically. Keep the Workshop page open long enough to verify that the button changes to the subscribed state.
4. Wait for Steam to finish downloading
Keep Steam running and allow the Workshop download to complete. Check Steam’s Downloads view for active, queued, paused, or failed transfers. A game launch performed while files are still arriving can leave DayZ with an incomplete collection.
- Do not launch immediately just because the Workshop page says you are subscribed.
- Resume paused downloads and make sure Steam is not waiting for another game update.
- Leave enough disk space for the initial files and later update packages.
- If several large items are subscribed, wait until the queue is idle before opening DayZ.
- If an update starts while DayZ is open, close the game and let Steam finish before testing the server again.
A subscription and a completed download are two different checkpoints. The first tells Steam to track the item for your account; the second gives the launcher the files it needs to load. Treat the Downloads view as the completion check, especially after subscribing to a large collection.
Load the subscribed collection in the official DayZ launcher
1. Start DayZ through Steam
Launch DayZ from your Steam library. The official DayZ store description says mods can be managed directly from the game launcher. Steam may finish a final Workshop synchronization as the game starts, so do not close the launcher while it is still processing content.
Starting through Steam also keeps the game, account, and Workshop subscriptions in the same supported path. If you have more than one Steam account on the computer, confirm that the account launching DayZ is the one that subscribed to the items.
2. Review the mod list
Use the launcher’s mod-management area to view the Workshop content available to your client. The exact visual label can change with launcher updates, but the function is the same: inspect the subscribed items, their availability, and the collection enabled for the current launch.
If an item is not listed, return to Steam and verify that you subscribed to the correct DayZ Workshop entry and that its download completed. A subscription made under a different Steam account will not appear in the account running DayZ.
Read the launcher’s status indicators instead of assuming that every subscribed item is ready. An entry may be present but unavailable because Steam has not completed an update, a dependency is absent, or the selected server does not accept that combination.

Select the mods required for your intended session. For a server connection, the enabled set must match the server’s required set, including dependencies. For a local or private play session, enable the set appropriate to that session rather than every item in your library; a larger list makes conflicts and diagnosis harder.
Use the launcher’s available warnings to identify content that is missing, unavailable, or not ready. Start the game only after the required entries show as available. If you switch servers, review the selection again instead of assuming the previous server’s collection is suitable.
Keeping separate, deliberate selections also makes later troubleshooting easier. When only the target server’s items are enabled, a missing dependency or incompatible entry is easier to identify than when dozens of unrelated Workshop items are active.
Join a community server with its required mods
Community servers control which mod collection their players need. The reliable order is to identify the server, subscribe to its requirements, wait for downloads, and then let the official launcher load that same collection.

- Choose the destination server. Record its name, address, map, and any published mod list or collection.
- Compare the list with Workshop pages. Confirm each item’s current title, author, dependencies, and update notes. Similar names can refer to different entries.
- Subscribe to every required item. Include dependency entries explicitly listed by the item or server operator.
- Finish all Steam downloads. Check the Downloads view rather than relying only on the Subscribe button.
- Open DayZ’s launcher. Confirm the same items are present and enabled for the planned server.
- Connect only after the collection is ready. If the server has updated its requirements, leave the game, allow Steam to synchronize, and review the launcher again.
DayZ’s Steam listing describes thousands of mods and community-run servers, so server-specific requirements are normal rather than an exception. A mod that works on one server may be rejected by another because server operators choose their own combinations and versions.

Do you need to copy files into an @ folder?

Manually moving, renaming, or copying Workshop directories can make the launcher’s state differ from Steam’s state. It can also leave outdated files in place when an item changes. The same warning applies to downloading an archive from an unrelated website simply because it has a familiar mod name. Client installation versus DayZ Tools and server files
