To sell recurring products in WooCommerce, install and activate the WooCommerce Subscriptions extension, then create the offer under Products > Add New. Choose Simple subscription for one plan or Variable subscription for tiers or variations. Set the recurring price and schedule, decide on trials, sign-up fees, expiration, renewal-date alignment, gifting, shipping, and one-time purchase options, then test the entire checkout and renewal path on a staging site before publishing.

What WooCommerce Subscriptions adds to a store

WooCommerce by itself creates one-time orders. The WooCommerce Subscriptions extension adds a subscription product type and the recurring-order logic needed to charge customers on a schedule. WooCommerce documentation states that the extension supports subscription plans on simple, variable, bundle, and composite products. This guide focuses on the product setup screen and the decisions that affect what customers pay, when they pay, and how the subscription ends.

A subscription has two financial moments: the initial signup payment and later renewal payments. The initial checkout can include the first period’s recurring price, a one-time sign-up fee, shipping, and taxes. A renewal order is then generated according to the schedule you configure. Whether that renewal is charged without customer action depends on the payment gateway, not just on the product settings.

Prerequisites and a safe setup order

Install the required extensions

  1. Install WooCommerce on the WordPress site and complete its basic store settings, including currency, tax treatment, shipping zones, and customer-account behavior.
  2. Install and activate the WooCommerce Subscriptions extension. It must be active alongside WooCommerce before subscription product types appear in the editor.
  3. Install and configure a payment gateway that documents support for the recurring payment method you intend to use. Check specifically for saved or reusable customer payment methods and automatic subscription renewals.

Do not begin with a live product if you have not confirmed the gateway’s recurring capabilities. A gateway can accept the first checkout yet be unable to charge future renewals automatically. In that case customers must pay each renewal manually from a payment link or from their account.

Use staging for the first complete test

Create a staging copy of the store and test the path a real customer will follow: product page, cart, checkout, account creation, the subscription record in My Account > Subscriptions, cancellation or suspension, a failed-payment scenario, and a renewal order. Use a gateway’s test mode where available, but also verify the production gateway’s documented behavior before launch. A subscription that looks correct in the editor can still fail at renewal if token storage, webhooks, or gateway permissions are incomplete.

Create the subscription product

Open the product editor

  1. In WordPress, go to Products > Add New.
  2. Enter the product name, description, images, category, and other normal WooCommerce details.
  3. In the Product data selector, choose the subscription type that matches your offer.

Choose Simple subscription or Variable subscription

Product type Use it when How pricing is configured
Simple subscription There is one recurring plan with no customer-selectable variations. Set the recurring price and subscription options once for the product.
Variable subscription Customers need tiers, sizes, durations, or other variations, and each variation needs its own subscription terms. Create attributes and variations, then configure the recurring price and relevant subscription options per variation.

For example, a single monthly membership is usually a simple subscription. Separate Basic, Standard, and Premium tiers are better represented as a variable subscription when each tier has a different recurring price or schedule.

Enter a purchasable recurring price

Enter the amount customers will pay for each recurring period. If the subscription price field is empty, the product is not purchasable. Enter 0 when the subscription itself should be free. A zero-priced subscription can still require careful account and payment handling if it later changes to a paid renewal or includes other charges.

Keep the recurring price distinct from any one-time sign-up fee. The recurring amount is what appears on each renewal; the sign-up fee is collected only at initial signup.

Set the billing period and renewal schedule

Choose an interval and period

WooCommerce Subscriptions supports daily, weekly, monthly, and annual periods. The interval can be set from 1 through 6. The resulting schedule is shown as a phrase such as “every 3 months.”

Configuration Customer-facing meaning
Every 1 day Charge once per day.
Every 1 week Charge once per week.
Every 1 month Charge once per month.
Every 3 months Charge quarterly.
Every 1 year Charge annually.
Every 6 months Charge twice per year.

Choose the shortest interval that matches the value you deliver. A monthly plan is not automatically equivalent to a quarterly plan divided by three: the renewal date, trial timing, shipping frequency, and total number of payments can all differ.

Use a storewide plan or a product-specific plan

Depending on the store configuration, you can apply a general subscription plan or define a custom plan for the product. A custom plan can specify the frequency, free-trial length, sign-up fee, expiration, discount, and renewal-date alignment. Use a custom plan when this product’s commercial terms differ from your normal subscription offer; otherwise a consistent storewide plan reduces configuration mistakes across products.

Align renewal dates when the business needs a common billing day

By default, a subscriber’s renewal cadence follows the initial payment and the interval selected. The product settings can optionally align renewals to a specified day. Date alignment is useful when a service is delivered on a calendar schedule or when your operations team needs renewals grouped on a predictable day. Explain the first-charge date and subsequent renewal date clearly on the product page so a customer does not mistake an aligned schedule for an immediate second charge.

Configure trials, sign-up fees, and the first charge

Free trials

Enter a free-trial period when customers should receive access before the first recurring charge. Billing begins after the trial according to the plan’s interval and any configured renewal-date alignment. State both the trial length and the date or event that ends it in your product copy.

A trial can create a special payment state. If checkout totals zero and no payment method is collected, the subscription can move to On Hold when the trial ends while it waits for the first renewal payment. Test this path with the selected gateway and decide whether your checkout should collect a payment method even when the initial amount is zero.

One-time sign-up fees

A sign-up fee is charged once at initial signup. It is separate from the recurring subscription price and is not added to later renewal orders. Use it for onboarding, equipment, activation, or another cost that occurs only when the subscription starts. Make the fee visible near the recurring price and in the checkout total.

Combining a trial and a sign-up fee

You can configure both options. In that case the customer may pay the one-time sign-up fee at checkout, receive the trial access, and begin recurring billing when the trial ends. Verify the exact checkout total and the first renewal date in staging, because a zero recurring amount and a nonzero fee produce a different payment flow from a completely free checkout.

Decide whether the subscription expires

Indefinite renewal

Subscriptions renew indefinitely by default until the subscriber or a store manager cancels them. This is the appropriate setting for memberships, maintenance, or access that continues until someone actively ends it.

Fixed payment count

Enable expiration when the plan should end after a defined number of total payments, then enter the total-payment count. The count includes the initial signup payment, not just renewals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Configured total payments What happens
1 The initial signup payment is the only payment; the subscription expires without a renewal.
12 monthly payments One signup payment plus 11 monthly renewals, then expiration.
6 quarterly payments One signup payment plus five quarterly renewals, then expiration.

Before publishing a fixed-term offer, write down the intended number of customer charges and compare it with the value entered in the expiration field. If you mean “12 renewals after signup,” the field must contain 13 total payments, not 12.

Choose optional purchase, shipping, and access rules

Gifting

Enable gifting when the purchaser should be able to buy the subscription for another person. Confirm how the recipient is identified, who receives account and renewal messages, and who can cancel or manage the subscription. Test both purchaser and recipient views before enabling the option publicly.

One-time purchase alongside the subscription

You can allow customers to buy the product once instead of subscribing. This presents a choice between a recurring purchase and a single order. Set the one-time price so it is intentional relative to the recurring price, sign-up fee, and expected commitment; do not assume WooCommerce will create a sensible comparison automatically.

One-time shipping

Enable one-time shipping when a physical item should be shipped only at signup rather than with every renewal. This is useful for an initial kit or device followed by a digital or service subscription. If the product needs a new shipment on each renewal, leave one-time shipping disabled and test the shipping lines on a renewal order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscription limit

Under Advanced, set a subscription limit when a customer should be allowed only one active subscription for that product or another defined maximum. Use this for licenses, memberships, or limited allocations where duplicate active subscriptions would be a mistake. Test the behavior with an existing subscriber and a second checkout.

Complete the ordinary WooCommerce product settings

A subscription product still needs the same operational details as a one-time product:

  • Inventory: define stock management and backorder behavior for physical goods.
  • Taxes: apply the correct tax class and display settings for the customer’s jurisdiction.
  • Shipping: assign shipping classes and confirm whether shipping is charged at signup, on every renewal, or only once.
  • Virtual or downloadable status: mark the product appropriately when no physical fulfillment is required, and configure download permissions if files are included.
  • Descriptions and images: show the recurring amount, interval, trial, sign-up fee, first-charge timing, expiration, and cancellation terms where customers can see them before checkout.

For a variable subscription, repeat these checks for every variation. A variation with a missing price or incompatible stock rule can be unavailable even when the parent product appears complete.

How renewal payments work

Automatic renewals

Automatic renewal requires a payment gateway that supports the recurring method and can save or reuse the customer’s payment method. During signup, the gateway stores the authorization or token according to its documented process. When a renewal order is due, WooCommerce attempts the charge without asking the customer to repeat checkout. Confirm the gateway’s support for automatic renewals, saved payment methods, and mixed carts if your store combines subscription and one-time products.

Gateway support is method-specific. A provider may support automatic renewals for one payment method but require manual payment for another, so test the exact method customers will use rather than relying on the gateway’s general name.

Manual renewal payments

When automatic renewal is unavailable or disabled, WooCommerce can send the subscriber a payment link for each renewal. The customer can also pay from the My Account area. Make sure renewal emails are enabled, contain a working link, and identify the amount and due date.

Manually created subscriptions

For a subscription created by an administrator rather than through the normal customer checkout, the first order may be pending. Once the customer pays that pending parent order, the subscription status switches to Active. WooCommerce then creates a renewal order when the next payment is due according to the billing schedule configured for the subscription. This sequence is useful for migrated subscribers, phone orders, or accounts created by staff, but it should be tested with the same gateway and email settings as a normal signup.

Compare plans before publishing

If your store offers more than one subscription, compare the choices using the same fields customers will use to decide:

Decision Questions to answer
Billing interval Is the plan daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual? Is the interval from 1 through 6 configured correctly?
Renewal-date alignment Does billing follow the signup date or a specified calendar day?
Recurring versus one-time cost What is charged each period, what is charged once, and is a one-time purchase available?
Trial and first charge How long is access free, and exactly when does the first recurring payment occur?
Term length Does the plan renew indefinitely or expire after a fixed total number of payments?
Renewal method Can the chosen gateway charge automatically, or will the customer receive a payment link?
Product structure Is one simple plan enough, or does each tier or variation need separate terms?
Shipping Is shipping collected on every renewal or only with the initial order?

Present these differences on the product page and at checkout. Customers should not need to infer whether “annual” means one payment for a year, twelve monthly payments, or a trial followed by an annual charge.

Pre-launch test checklist

Customer-facing checkout

  • Open the product page as a logged-out visitor and verify the recurring amount, interval, trial, fee, expiration, shipping, and one-time option.
  • Add the product to the cart alone and alongside a one-time product if mixed checkout is allowed.
  • Complete signup with a new account and confirm the initial order total, tax, shipping, and payment-method behavior.
  • Check the confirmation email and the subscription record under My Account > Subscriptions.

Lifecycle events

  • Advance or simulate the first renewal and confirm that the renewal order is generated on the expected date.
  • For automatic renewals, verify that the gateway reuses the saved method and records a successful payment.
  • For manual renewals, verify the email payment link and the customer’s account payment path.
  • Trigger a failed payment and check the resulting order and subscription status, customer notification, and recovery path.
  • Test customer cancellation, suspension, and reactivation permissions.
  • For an expiring plan, count the initial payment and each renewal until the subscription reaches its intended end.

Administrative checks

  • Inspect the parent order, renewal orders, taxes, shipping lines, and payment method metadata.
  • Confirm that renewal-date alignment, trial timing, and expiration are represented correctly in the subscription record.
  • Repeat the test for each variable variation and each payment method you will advertise.
  • Move the tested configuration to production only after the complete path succeeds on staging.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

The product cannot be purchased

Check that the recurring price is not blank, a valid variation is selected, stock rules do not block purchase, and the product is published. A blank subscription price makes the product not purchasable; use 0 for an intentionally free subscription.

The first payment succeeds but renewal is not automatic

Review the gateway’s support for the selected recurring method and confirm that the customer’s payment method was saved for reuse. If the method does not support automatic charging, configure and communicate manual renewal payments instead of promising automatic billing.

A trial ends with the subscription On Hold

This can occur when the initial checkout total was zero and no payment method was collected. The subscription is waiting for the first renewal payment. Collect a usable payment method at signup when the gateway supports it, or provide a clear manual-payment path and test the resulting email.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The term expires earlier than intended

Recalculate the expiration field as total payments, including signup. Twelve monthly total payments produce one initial payment and 11 renewals. Increase the configured count when the business promise is 12 renewals after the initial charge.

Shipping appears on the wrong orders

Check the one-time-shipping option and inspect an actual renewal order. A physical subscription that needs recurring shipments must retain shipping on renewals; an initial kit followed by digital access may need one-time shipping instead.

Publish with clear customer terms

After staging tests pass, publish the product with plain-language terms near the purchase controls. State the recurring price and period, any sign-up fee, trial length, first-charge timing, renewal-date rule, expiration or indefinite-renewal behavior, shipping frequency, and how customers cancel or pay a manual renewal. Keep the same terms in confirmation and renewal emails. This alignment prevents a customer from seeing one schedule on the product page and a different schedule in the order or account screen.

The core setup is complete when a customer can purchase the intended plan, see it in My Account > Subscriptions, receive the correct renewal treatment from the selected gateway, and reach the documented end or cancellation state without staff intervention.
