The officially supported path covers Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go S. Valve has also improved support for some AMD-powered handhelds, including the ROG Ally and original Lenovo Legion Go, but compatibility remains device-specific.
Important: On an arbitrary desktop tower or laptop, installing SteamOS is experimental. The computer may boot successfully while still lacking working graphics acceleration, Wi-Fi, audio, controls, sleep, battery reporting, or external-display support.

The safest procedure is to back up the target device, download the current SteamOS recovery image from Valve, write it to a blank USB drive, boot the target computer in UEFI mode, and choose the recovery action appropriate for your hardware. A reimage can erase Windows, personal files, and existing partitions, so do not begin until you have a verified backup and a way to recover the original operating system.

| Target hardware | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Steam Deck | Officially supported. Valve’s recovery process is primarily intended to repair or reimage Steam Deck software. |
| Lenovo Legion Go S | Officially supported as a SteamOS device. Valve’s SteamOS updates include device-specific controller, power, firmware, and interface work for this model. |
| ROG Ally, original Legion Go, and some other AMD handhelds | Valve has improved compatibility and has provided a path for owners interested in testing SteamOS, but support depends on the exact model, firmware, and hardware revision. |
| Custom desktop PCs and laptops | Experimental unless Valve has specifically listed the exact hardware. Do not assume that a successful boot means the entire computer is supported. |
SteamOS is an Arch Linux-based operating system with a console-style gaming interface, Desktop Mode, Steam integration, and Proton for running many Windows games. It is optimized for gaming rather than guaranteed to replace every Windows desktop function. Hardware support is especially important because Valve’s compatibility work has been focused on handheld components such as AMD graphics, integrated controls, power management, firmware, and suspend behavior.
What you need before installing
- A compatible target device: ideally a Steam Deck or Lenovo Legion Go S, or an AMD handheld with documented SteamOS compatibility.
- A complete backup: copy personal files and make sure you can reinstall or restore the operating system currently on the device.
- A current official SteamOS recovery image from Valve’s SteamOS or support documentation.
- A blank USB flash drive for the recovery media. Writing the image will destroy the drive’s existing contents.
- A USB port capable of booting external media. Handhelds and compact PCs may require a USB-C to USB-A adapter if the installation drive uses a standard USB-A connector.
- A wired keyboard and mouse if you need to navigate firmware settings or Desktop Mode. They are useful, but not mandatory on every supported handheld.
- A stable internet connection for updates and hardware testing after the first boot.
- Access to the device’s one-time boot menu or UEFI firmware settings.
Do not choose a USB drive based on an assumed image size. Valve can change the recovery image, so use a drive with enough space for the current download and treat it as disposable during the writing process.
If you want to experiment without touching Windows, a separate NVMe SSD or another internal drive is an optional but much safer target than overwriting the drive that contains your working installation. It is not required for SteamOS, but it can make rollback substantially easier.

Understand the difference between recovery, repair, and reimaging
The current official workflow is based on a SteamOS recovery image rather than the old-style generic Linux installer described in some older guides. The recovery environment may provide several actions, including a destructive reimage, a repair or reinstall option, and access to a desktop environment. The labels and available choices can vary by device and image version.
A reimage is the dangerous option: it is intended to restore the target device to a known SteamOS state and can rewrite partitions or erase the operating-system drive. A repair option may preserve more data, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed way to preserve Windows or personal files. Read every warning in the recovery environment and verify the target disk before confirming.
Booting the recovery USB successfully is also not proof that a permanent installation will work perfectly. It only demonstrates that the machine can start the recovery environment. Graphics, wireless networking, controls, audio, suspend, and power management may still fail after installation.
How to install SteamOS from the official recovery image
-
Back up the target device. Save documents, game saves, photographs, browser data, and anything else you cannot replace. If Windows is currently installed, create the recovery media recommended for that computer or confirm that you have a separate Windows installer. A SteamOS reimage may remove the existing operating system and its partitions.

- ✅2. Holding the "Option" key , and Power On
- ✅3. it will appear startup menu, choose USB drive from startup menu
- ✅4. After that, the installation will begin.
-
Check the exact hardware before downloading. Confirm the model name, processor, graphics hardware, wireless chip, storage arrangement, and current firmware. For a Steam Deck or Legion Go S, follow Valve’s device-specific recovery guidance. For an AMD handheld, look for the exact model rather than assuming that all AMD devices are equivalent. For a desktop or laptop, treat the installation as unsupported unless Valve explicitly lists the system.
-
Download the latest official recovery image. Use the SteamOS recovery image and instructions linked from Valve’s current SteamOS or support pages. Avoid old Steam Deck images, legacy BIOS guides, unofficial mirrors, and community-modified installers unless you specifically understand why you are using them. Valve’s May 2025 SteamOS announcement identified the updated recovery image as the route for repairing supported devices and testing SteamOS on compatible AMD handhelds.
-
Write the image to the USB drive. On the operating system you are currently using, open a reputable image-writing utility, select the SteamOS recovery image, select the correct USB drive, and start the write process. Double-check the destination: choosing the wrong disk can erase it. Do not remove the drive until the utility reports that writing has completed. The USB drive’s existing files will be destroyed.
-
Shut down the target computer and connect the USB. On a handheld with only USB-C ports, connect the drive through a suitable adapter or hub. If you are using a desktop, connect the drive directly to a rear motherboard USB port when possible. Disconnect unnecessary external storage so that the recovery environment presents fewer possible target disks.

Open the one-time boot menu. Turn on or restart the computer and press the boot-menu key or manufacturer-specific button combination. There is no universal key across PCs and handhelds, so use the device manufacturer’s instructions. Select the UEFI entry for the USB drive if more than one entry appears. If the USB is absent, enter UEFI firmware setup and check external-USB boot settings.
-
Start the SteamOS recovery environment. Allow the recovery image to load. Depending on the target device, you may see options for reimaging, repairing or reinstalling SteamOS, clearing local data, or entering a desktop environment. Do not choose a destructive reimage until you have confirmed the backup and the correct target disk.

Choose the installation or repair action appropriate to your goal. If you are restoring a supported SteamOS device, follow Valve’s recovery instructions. If you are testing an AMD handheld, understand that the procedure may be experimental and that some components may require later updates. On an arbitrary desktop PC, stop if the recovery environment does not clearly identify the intended target or if the process would overwrite a valuable Windows installation without a tested recovery plan.
-
Wait for the process to finish. Keep the device connected to power and do not interrupt the process while it changes partitions or installs the operating system. When prompted, remove the USB drive before restarting so that the computer does not repeatedly boot into recovery.

Complete the first boot and update SteamOS. Connect to the internet, sign in to Steam, and allow all available system and firmware updates to install. Valve continues to publish device-specific fixes involving bootloaders, controllers, graphics, audio, displays, wireless hardware, power behavior, and firmware. A newly installed image may not contain the newest fixes.
-
Test the hardware before committing to the setup. Check the built-in display, GPU acceleration, speakers, headphone output, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, controls, touch input, suspend and resume, battery reporting, external displays, and at least a few of your most important games. On a desktop, also test keyboard and mouse input, multiple monitors, storage, and sleep behavior.
Instructions by device type
Steam Deck
Steam Deck is the reference platform for SteamOS. Use Valve’s official recovery procedure when you need to restore or reimage the Deck. The main risks are still data loss and selecting a destructive recovery option without a backup, rather than basic hardware compatibility.
Lenovo Legion Go S
The Legion Go S is an officially supported SteamOS device. Use the current image and device-specific instructions rather than adapting an old Steam Deck tutorial. Keep the handheld connected to power during recovery and update it fully after the first boot, because controller, power, firmware, and interface behavior can depend on the installed release.

ROG Ally, original Legion Go, and other AMD handhelds
Valve has improved SteamOS support for AMD-powered handhelds beyond the Deck, including the ROG Ally and original Legion Go. These devices provide the strongest experimental path outside Valve’s reference hardware, but “AMD-powered” is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Controls, buttons, gyro sensors, display modes, audio, wireless networking, power limits, sleep, and firmware can vary by model.
Keep the original recovery media and operating-system backup for the handheld. If SteamOS boots but an essential feature is missing, returning to the manufacturer’s operating system may be the most practical solution.
Desktop towers and laptops
Valve’s public support language does not establish broad official support for arbitrary x86-64 desktop PCs and laptops. A desktop may boot the recovery image, but the result can be incomplete or difficult to maintain. Nvidia graphics, hybrid graphics, unusual Wi-Fi or audio chips, laptop power management, proprietary firmware, nonstandard storage controllers, and multi-monitor configurations are particularly important compatibility risks.
Do not treat a successful installation on one custom PC as evidence that SteamOS will work on another. If your main goal is a general-purpose Linux desktop with broad PC hardware support, a Linux gaming distribution designed for general computers may be a better starting point.

What happens to Windows and dual boot?
Do not assume that the current SteamOS recovery-image workflow will create a Windows-and-SteamOS dual-boot menu. Older community documentation for earlier SteamOS generations described expert installation modes and dual-boot procedures, but those instructions do not automatically apply to the current recovery-image process.
For a beginner, the safest options are:
- Use a separate test drive. Install SteamOS on an additional SSD while leaving the Windows drive disconnected or untouched. This reduces the chance of selecting the wrong disk and gives you a simpler rollback path.
- Use a spare computer or handheld. This avoids risking the machine you rely on for work or school.
- Test the recovery environment first. A USB boot can reveal obvious display or input problems, although it cannot guarantee that the installed system will behave correctly.
- Attempt dual boot only with a verified backup. Device-specific or community-supported procedures may be required, and bootloader changes can leave either operating system inaccessible until repaired.
If preserving Windows is non-negotiable, do not select a reimage on the Windows system drive. A separate SSD is safer than hoping an automatic installer will preserve existing partitions.

Troubleshooting SteamOS installation problems
| Problem | What to try | What it may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| The USB does not appear in the boot menu | Recreate the USB, confirm that the image-writing utility completed successfully, try another USB port, reconnect through a different adapter, and check UEFI external-boot settings. Select the UEFI version of the USB entry when available. | Corrupted media, an incompatible port or adapter, disabled USB boot, or a firmware configuration issue. |
| The device boots the USB but the controls do not work | Connect a keyboard and mouse if possible. Confirm the exact model and check current SteamOS release notes for device-specific controller support. | The recovery environment or installed release may not yet support that controller layout, firmware revision, or input device. |
| Black screen or no graphics acceleration | Try another display connection, remove external monitors, check whether the GPU is supported, and test the system with a basic display setup. Do not assume that a Windows graphics driver problem can be fixed with a Windows driver utility inside SteamOS. | GPU incompatibility, hybrid-graphics behavior, display initialization, or missing hardware support. Nvidia desktop support should not be assumed. |
| Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or audio does not work | Use Ethernet or a compatible temporary USB adapter if available, install all SteamOS updates, and check the release notes for the exact hardware. | A missing or incomplete driver, device-specific regression, firmware issue, or unsupported chip. |
| Boot fails after installation | Check UEFI boot entries and confirm that the internal drive is selected. On supported devices, use Valve’s official recovery process. If you changed a dual-boot configuration, be prepared to restore the relevant bootloader or operating system. | A missing boot entry, bootloader problem, interrupted installation, or unsupported storage and firmware configuration. |
| The installation loops or reports corrupted media | Re-download the official image, recreate the USB with another writing method, try a different USB drive, and use another port or adapter. | Damaged download, unreliable installation media, writing-tool failure, or a recovery-image issue. The target hardware is not automatically at fault. |
| Games do not run after SteamOS installs | Check each title’s Steam compatibility information, Proton behavior, anti-cheat requirements, launcher dependencies, and controller configuration. Test one game at a time after system updates. | Proton compatibility is title-specific. SteamOS supports many Windows games, but no claim that every Windows game works is accurate. |
SteamOS game compatibility after installation
SteamOS uses Proton to run many games built for Windows. Valve says SteamOS supports tens of thousands of games, but that does not mean every title works identically to its Windows version. Steam’s Verified program communicates compatibility at the individual-game level.
Before replacing Windows, check the games you actually play. Pay attention to whether a title is Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or untested, and look for requirements involving third-party launchers, kernel-level anti-cheat, unsupported video codecs, unusual input devices, or multiplayer services. A computer can be perfectly usable as a SteamOS desktop while still being a poor fit for one important game.
Should you install SteamOS on your PC?
Install normally if:
- You have a Steam Deck or Lenovo Legion Go S.
- You have a device-specific recovery procedure and a backup.
- You are comfortable restoring the original operating system if a feature does not work.
Test cautiously if:
- You own an AMD-powered handheld such as an ROG Ally or original Legion Go.
- You can use a spare drive or spare device.
- You have confirmed that controls, graphics, wireless, audio, suspend, and the games you care about are supported.
Consider another Linux gaming distribution if:
- You want to install on a general desktop tower or laptop with no device-specific Valve support.
- You rely on Nvidia, hybrid graphics, unusual peripherals, or complex multi-monitor and power-management features.
- You need a broad general-purpose desktop operating system rather than a gaming-focused interface.
Do not install generic PC-maintenance or driver-update software as a prerequisite. SteamOS is Linux-based, and its normal maintenance path is the built-in SteamOS update system. A third-party Windows cleanup utility is not a substitute for hardware compatibility, firmware updates, or Valve’s published fixes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install SteamOS on any Windows PC?
Not with official support. Valve’s current public support scope centers on Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go S, with improved compatibility for some AMD handhelds. An arbitrary desktop or laptop may boot the recovery image, but its graphics, wireless, audio, controls, power management, or bootloader may not work correctly.
Will installing SteamOS delete Windows?
It can. A reimage may rewrite the operating-system drive, remove Windows, and erase personal files or partitions. Back up the computer first, and use a separate SSD if you want to experiment without risking your Windows installation.
Can I dual-boot Windows and SteamOS?
Dual boot is not guaranteed by the current recovery-image workflow. Older guides may describe installation methods from earlier SteamOS generations. A device-specific or community-supported procedure may be necessary, and it should only be attempted with a verified backup and recovery plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do I need a USB drive to install SteamOS?
The current official recovery workflow uses a recovery image written to removable USB media, so a blank USB flash drive is the central installation item. Devices with USB-C-only ports may also need an adapter or hub.
Will every Steam game work on SteamOS?
No. Proton runs many Windows games, but compatibility is title-specific. Use Steam’s individual compatibility information and Verified program, and check games that depend on third-party launchers, anti-cheat, or unusual hardware before replacing Windows.
The Bottom Line
The accurate answer is not that SteamOS installs on every PC. Use Valve’s current recovery image on a Steam Deck or Lenovo Legion Go S, or test it cautiously on a compatible AMD handheld. On a desktop tower or laptop, treat the process as experimental, protect your existing installation with a backup or separate SSD, and be prepared for hardware features that do not work.
