Yes—but not as fully certified SteamOS hardware. Valve provides an official USB recovery workflow for installing SteamOS on the original Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally, while currently classifying both as beta-compatible devices. As of the latest official release information located for this article, SteamOS 3.8.14 is stable and SteamOS 3.8.22 is a beta/preview build, both released July 3, 2026.
Yes—but with an important qualification: Valve now provides an official SteamOS recovery workflow for installing SteamOS on devices including the original Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally. However, neither handheld is currently in Valve’s narrower “Powered by SteamOS” hardware group. Valve classifies them as beta-compatible devices, so installation is possible without promising complete Steam Deck-level support for every control, firmware, sleep, display, wireless, or power-management feature.

As of the latest official release information located for this article, SteamOS 3.8.14 is the stable release, published on July 3, 2026. SteamOS 3.8.22 was published the same day as a beta or preview build. That distinction matters: the beta may contain newer third-party-handheld fixes, but it should not be treated as the stable default for every Legion Go or ROG Ally.

Valve’s SteamOS support wording now separates two groups:
#1 Best Overall
- Ergonomic Posture Correction: Designed to elevate your laptop to the perfect eye level, this adjustable laptop stand significantly reduces neck, shoulder, and spinal fatigue. Transform your desk into a healthier workstation, ideal for long hours of typing, Zoom meetings, or gaming.
- Unshakable Dual-Rod Stability: Unlike single-hinge models, our stand features a highly engineered dual-support rod mechanism. It perfectly distributes weight to ensure a 100% wobble-free typing experience, safely supporting heavy-duty devices up to 22 lbs (10kg).
- Advanced Thermal Cooling Panel: Maximize your device's performance. The unique geometric heat-vent design on the upper panel provides superior airflow compared to standard solid stands. This continuous heat dissipation prevents your laptop from thermal throttling and hardware damage during intensive tasks.
- Universal 10-16” Compatibility: A versatile computer riser that seamlessly fits all 10 to 16-inch laptops. Broadly compatible with MacBook Pro/Air, Dell XPS, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Chromebook, and large gaming laptops. The anti-slip silicone pads firmly grip your device and protect it from scratches.
- Foldable, Portable & Ready to Go: Maximize your productivity anywhere. The dual-foldable design allows the stand to collapse completely flat in seconds. Easily slip it into your backpack or briefcase, making it the ultimate portable office accessory for business trips, cafes, or hybrid work setups.
- “Powered by SteamOS” hardware: Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Lenovo Legion Go S.
- Beta-compatible hardware: the original Lenovo Legion Go, ASUS ROG Ally, ASUS ROG Ally X, other AMD handhelds, and selected AMD graphics hardware.
The original Legion Go and ROG Ally are therefore not officially certified SteamOS products in the same sense as the devices in the first group. Valve’s SteamOS 3.8 changes nevertheless improve compatibility with recent AMD and Intel platforms, add non-Deck boot-menu support, add Lenovo Legion Go controller support, and introduce preliminary charge-limiting support for Legion Go-family devices.
Those improvements make SteamOS more practical on these handhelds, but compatibility can still vary by model, BIOS revision, firmware, hardware configuration, and update channel. Treat the installation as a beta-compatible experiment rather than a guaranteed replacement for Windows.
Before installing: decide whether you want a replacement or a repair
Valve’s recovery environment offers three materially different choices:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Recovery option | What it does | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Re-image Device | Performs a full factory-style reset. It removes user data, installed games, applications, operating systems, and the existing Windows installation before replacing them with SteamOS. | When you intentionally want a clean SteamOS-only installation and have completed your backups. |
| Repair SteamOS | Reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content. | When SteamOS is already installed but has a serious software or boot problem. |
| Recovery tools | Opens tools for modifying or repairing the boot partition. | When you specifically need boot-partition repair or recovery work and understand the risks. |
Do not select Re-image Device casually. It can erase Windows and all locally stored content. Valve’s documentation describes the destructive behavior; the following backup checklist is sensible preparation rather than a guarantee that every backup method will work.
Back up these items first
- Personal files stored on the handheld.
- Game saves that are not synchronized through Steam Cloud or another service.
- Windows license information and any product keys you may need if you reinstall Windows.
- Device-specific drivers, especially graphics, chipset, wireless, audio, and controller-related packages.
- Recovery media or installation files for Windows if you may want to return to it.
- Any Windows-only software, utilities, launchers, mods, or configuration files you cannot easily download again.
If you are uncertain whether you will prefer SteamOS, do not use the destructive re-image until you have a reliable Windows recovery plan. Valve’s installer workflow should not be presented as a dual-boot installer; the official options cover installation, re-imaging, repair, and recovery, not a one-click dual-boot setup.

What you need to install SteamOS
- The Legion Go or ROG Ally, with its charger connected.
- A USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity.
- A Windows, macOS, or Linux computer for preparing the recovery drive.
- A compatible USB-C adapter or dock if the handheld and flash drive do not connect directly.
- A stable internet connection for updates after the first boot.
Writing the recovery image formats the flash drive, erasing anything already on it. A 16 GB or larger USB 3.0 flash drive is a practical choice: it exceeds Valve’s 8 GB minimum and can be dedicated to recovery media. This is a generic storage requirement, not a Valve-certified accessory.
If your chosen drive uses USB-A and you need to connect it through the handheld’s USB-C port, an optional USB-C OTG adapter or USB-C hub with a USB-A port can provide the connection. It is not mandatory for every setup, and Valve does not require a particular adapter model.
Step 1: Download and write the SteamOS recovery image
- Open Valve’s official SteamOS installation and repair page and download the current SteamOS recovery image.
- Connect a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity to the computer preparing the installer.
- Copy off anything important from that drive. The imaging process will erase its existing contents.
- On Windows, Valve recommends Rufus.
- On macOS or Linux, Valve recommends Balena Etcher. Linux users may alternatively write the image from the command line.
- Choose the downloaded SteamOS image and the correct USB drive in the imaging utility.
- Start the write operation and wait for it to finish. Do not remove the drive while it is being written.
Double-check the selected disk before confirming. Imaging the wrong removable drive can destroy its contents. After the tool reports completion, safely eject the USB drive from the computer.
Step 2: Disable Secure Boot on the original Legion Go
Valve states that Secure Boot generally needs to be disabled on devices other than Steam Deck before they can boot the recovery image. Its example path for the original Legion Go is:
- Power the Legion Go down completely.
- Hold Volume Up, then press the power button.
- When the Novo Button Menu appears, select BIOS setup. You may need to use the touchscreen.
- Select More settings.
- Open Security.
- Set Secure boot to disabled.
- Exit the firmware setup and choose the option to exit while saving changes.
BIOS layouts and labels can change with firmware revisions or regional models. These are Valve’s example labels, not a guarantee that every Legion Go will display an identical menu.
Step 3: Disable Secure Boot on the ROG Ally
For the ASUS ROG Ally, Valve’s example sequence is:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Restart the powered-on ROG Ally.
- During the restart, hold Volume Up to enter the BIOS utility.
- Press Y to switch to Advanced Mode.
- Use the D-pad to open the Security tab.
- Select Secure Boot and set Secure Boot Control to disabled.
- Save the change and exit the BIOS.
As with the Legion Go, firmware updates can alter the exact screen layout. If the labels differ, look for the Secure Boot setting under the firmware’s Security area rather than assuming the device is incompatible.

Step 4: Boot the SteamOS USB recovery environment
- With the handheld powered off, connect the prepared USB drive directly or through a compatible USB-C adapter or dock.
- Start the handheld and open its one-time boot menu.
- Select the USB recovery device.
- Wait for the SteamOS recovery environment to load.
The exact one-time boot-menu key or button combination can vary by device and firmware, so there is no universal key sequence to promise here. If the handheld starts Windows instead, shut it down, reconnect the USB drive, confirm Secure Boot is disabled, and try the device’s firmware boot-menu route again.
Step 5: Select the correct recovery action
Choose Re-image Device only after confirming that you want SteamOS to replace the existing operating system and that your backups are complete. This is the clean-install route and can remove Windows, installed games, applications, and personal files.
Choose Repair SteamOS when your goal is to reinstall or repair an existing SteamOS installation while attempting to preserve games and personal content. It is not a way to preserve an existing Windows installation while adding SteamOS.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Recovery tools only when you need to work on the boot partition or perform a more specific repair. Boot and partition changes can make the device unbootable if used incorrectly.
Keep the handheld connected to power throughout imaging. Do not interrupt the process, close the lid, remove the USB drive, or force a shutdown while the recovery environment is writing the installation.

First boot and updates
After installation completes, allow the handheld to restart into SteamOS. Connect to the internet, sign in to Steam, and install the available SteamOS and Steam client updates before judging compatibility.
For troubleshooting, record:
- The handheld model and storage configuration.
- BIOS or firmware version.
- SteamOS version number.
- Whether the device is using the stable or beta channel.
- Any problem with controls, wireless, audio, display output, sleep, charging, or game performance.
SteamOS 3.8’s release notes specifically mention Lenovo Legion Go controller support and preliminary charge limiting for Legion Go-family devices. The charge-limiting feature initially required Desktop Mode access. These are useful signs of improving support, but they do not establish complete feature parity with Steam Deck hardware.
What may not work like it does on a Steam Deck?
The main risk is not whether the recovery image can start; it is whether every part of the handheld behaves correctly afterward. Beta compatibility does not guarantee identical support for:
- Built-in controls, triggers, gyro input, or special hardware buttons.
- Sleep, wake, suspend, and resume behavior.
- Battery reporting, charging behavior, or charge limits.
- Internal and external display output.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, microphones, and accessories.
- Performance profiles, fan control, and power-management tools.
- Firmware updates or manufacturer-specific utilities.
- Games that depend on Windows-only launchers, anti-cheat systems, or software.
SteamOS 3.8 improves the situation for newer AMD and Intel platforms and adds non-Deck compatibility work, but support can change between stable and preview builds. If a feature is essential to your daily use, test it before deleting Windows—or keep a complete recovery path available.
Should you install SteamOS on your Legion Go or ROG Ally?
SteamOS is most attractive if you want a console-like interface, Steam-focused navigation, and a Linux gaming environment without maintaining a full Windows desktop. It is less suitable if you depend on Windows-only launchers, manufacturer control software, specific anti-cheat support, or guaranteed access to every hardware feature.

The safest approach is:
- Read the recovery choices carefully.
- Back up Windows and personal data.
- Prepare the USB installer correctly.
- Disable Secure Boot only as needed for installation.
- Install the stable release unless you have a specific reason to test beta software.
- Test controls, sleep, charging, wireless, display output, and your main games.
- Keep Windows recovery media if you later decide SteamOS is missing an essential feature.
In short, Valve has made SteamOS installation on the original Legion Go and ROG Ally an official recovery workflow, and SteamOS 3.8 adds meaningful non-Deck improvements. But “installable” is not the same as “Powered by SteamOS”: both handhelds remain beta-compatible rather than fully certified SteamOS products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will installing SteamOS erase Windows on my Legion Go or ROG Ally?
Yes. Valve’s recovery environment includes a Re-image Device option that replaces the existing operating system with SteamOS. It can delete Windows, installed games, applications, and personal files, so back up everything important before proceeding.
Do I need an 8 GB USB drive to install SteamOS?
Valve requires a USB recovery drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Writing the SteamOS image formats the drive and erases its existing contents, so use a spare drive or back up its files first.
Do I need to disable Secure Boot?
Usually. Valve says most devices other than Steam Deck require Secure Boot to be disabled before booting the recovery image. The exact BIOS path can vary by firmware revision.
Can I use a USB-C adapter for the SteamOS installer?
An adapter is optional. If the flash drive uses USB-A and your handheld’s available connection is USB-C, a compatible USB-C OTG adapter or hub can connect the recovery drive. Valve does not require a particular adapter.
Is the original Legion Go officially supported by SteamOS?
Not in Valve’s current hardware classification. The original Legion Go and ROG Ally are listed as beta-compatible, while the narrower “Powered by SteamOS” group includes Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Lenovo Legion Go S.
What is the latest SteamOS version for these handhelds?
As of the latest official release information located for this article, SteamOS 3.8.14 is stable and SteamOS 3.8.22 is a beta or preview build, both dated July 3, 2026. A beta channel may change more frequently and should not be assumed to be the stable default.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You can install SteamOS on the original Legion Go or ROG Ally using Valve’s USB recovery image, but choose Re-image Device only if you are prepared to erase Windows and local data. SteamOS 3.8.14 is the stable version identified for this article as of July 3, 2026; 3.8.22 is a beta/preview build. The handhelds have improving beta compatibility, not guaranteed Steam Deck-level feature parity.
