Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe fix depends on what “lag” means in your case. If only the picture stutters, troubleshoot the device, graphics settings, drivers, mods, and background programs. If everyone’s actions are delayed, check the server’s TPS and MSPT. If actions are delayed only for you, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and test the route for latency, packet loss, and jitter.
Do not start by changing DNS, adding RAM, or lowering random settings. Establish a baseline, restart the complete connection path, remove competing traffic, run network tests while the problem is active, and profile the server before making server-side changes.

Minecraft “lag” is not one problem. Low FPS and stuttering are usually client-performance issues; a server that cannot keep up has tick lag; delayed actions usually indicate high latency; rubber-banding and disconnects can indicate packet loss or jitter. The correct fix depends on which symptom you are actually seeing.
Start by checking whether the problem affects one player or everyone, one server or every server, and whether it is visual stutter, delayed interaction, rubber-banding, or disconnection. Then test the connection in order: restart the complete path, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, stop competing downloads and uploads, test the router and server route, and only then change server settings or escalate to the host or ISP.

What kind of Minecraft lag do you have?
| What you notice | Most likely category | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| The picture stutters, FPS drops, chunks render slowly, or the game freezes while other players seem normal | Client performance | Your device, graphics settings, drivers, mods, thermal state, memory pressure, or another local application is struggling. This is not usually a ping problem. |
| Everyone’s actions are delayed, mobs stop and then move suddenly, redstone pauses, or the server console reports long ticks | Server tick lag | The server is taking too long to complete its game loop. On Paper, 20 TPS is the target and the server generally needs to keep each tick below 50 milliseconds. |
| Interactions are consistently delayed, but the world simulation itself appears normal | High ping or latency | Packets are taking too long to travel between you and the server. Distance, ISP routing, congestion, Wi-Fi, and VPNs are common contributors. |
| You move backward, blocks break and reappear, inventory actions fail intermittently, or you are disconnected | Packet loss | Some packets are not reaching their destination. A connection can still browse the web while losing enough game traffic to cause serious problems. |
| The game works normally for a while, then suddenly rubber-bands or catches up | Jitter or intermittent loss | Latency is varying sharply, often because of Wi-Fi interference, congestion, an overloaded router, or an unstable route. |
These categories can overlap. A server under heavy load can make every player experience delayed actions even when their ping is low. Conversely, one player can have high ping to a perfectly healthy server. FPS, TPS, ping, packet loss, and jitter are different measurements.
Fast troubleshooting for players
1. Establish a baseline before changing anything
Write down the answers to these questions:
- Does the issue happen on one server or every server?
- Are all players affected, or only one player?
- Is it continuous, or does it happen at particular times?
- Does the in-game indicator show high latency, if your edition or server provides one?
- Is the symptom visual stutter, delayed interaction, rubber-banding, slow chunk loading, or disconnection?
- What were you doing when it happened: exploring new terrain, entering a mob farm, using a redstone machine, or simply standing still?
This baseline prevents a common mistake: changing graphics settings to treat a network problem, or changing server memory to treat a Wi-Fi problem.
2. Restart the complete connection path
Close Minecraft completely. Sign out and back in if the session appears stuck, restart the computer or console, and power-cycle the modem and router. Wait for the router to reconnect fully before launching the game again. Mojang lists these steps among its recommended checks for crashes, lag, and multiplayer connection problems in its Minecraft lag troubleshooting guidance.
This can clear a transient game process, a stale session, exhausted router resources, or a temporary connection fault. It will not permanently repair a distant congested route or an overloaded server, so continue testing if the symptom returns.
3. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
For a computer or console close enough to the router, temporarily test with a direct Ethernet connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical option for this comparison. The purpose of the test is to remove the local wireless link as a variable—not to reduce the physical distance to a remote Minecraft server or guarantee lower ping through an overloaded ISP route.
If Minecraft becomes stable over Ethernet but not over Wi-Fi, investigate wireless interference, signal strength, router placement, the wireless band, and other devices using the same access point. If both connections show the same problem, the fault is more likely to be beyond the Wi-Fi link, on the device, at the server, or along the ISP route. Mojang specifically recommends trying Ethernet for Java multiplayer troubleshooting, and Microsoft also recommends comparing Wi-Fi with a direct wired connection in its Java multiplayer guidance.

4. Remove competing traffic and filtering variables
Pause game downloads, cloud synchronization, video uploads, live streams, torrents, and other large transfers. Also close applications that are consuming CPU, memory, or disk time if the symptom is visual stutter. Mojang recommends checking currently running programs for bandwidth use.
For a controlled test, temporarily disconnect from a VPN and test again. If a third-party firewall or antivirus product performs network inspection, test with that inspection excluded or paused one variable at a time. Restore protection immediately after the test; do not leave a firewall or antivirus disabled as a permanent “lag fix.” Mojang warns that VPNs, firewalls, and antivirus software can block or slow Minecraft connections in its multiplayer troubleshooting article.
5. Update the game, drivers, and add-ons
Install the current available Minecraft update for your edition and update the graphics driver from the device or GPU manufacturer. Temporarily disable shaders, resource packs, add-ons, and mods, then test an otherwise unchanged world or server. Mojang recommends updating the game and graphics drivers, closing other programs, disabling add-ons or mods for testing, and adjusting video settings when diagnosing crashes and lag.
If the problem disappears with a clean, unmodded setup, add changes back one at a time. A mod that adds entities, automation, chunk loading, or graphical effects can create a local FPS problem—or contribute to server workload if it changes what the server must process.

Windows network tests: separate Wi-Fi problems from route problems
These commands diagnose the connection; they do not repair it. Run them in Windows Command Prompt while Minecraft is affected if possible, and compare results over several minutes. Replace the placeholders with your router’s address and the server’s hostname or IP address.
Find and test the default gateway
First run:
ipconfig
Find the Default Gateway under the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter. Then test it:
ping <router-address> -n 50
A stable gateway result suggests that the device-to-router link is behaving consistently during the test. Repeated timeouts, large variation, or sudden spikes point toward the Wi-Fi link, network adapter, Ethernet cable, router, or local interference. Fix that local segment before blaming the Minecraft server.
A stable gateway does not prove that the internet route is healthy. It only makes a local connection problem less likely.

Test the Minecraft server address
ping <minecraft-server-address> -n 50
Compare this with the gateway results:
- Gateway unstable and destination unstable: investigate Wi-Fi, the local adapter, the router, or the cable first.
- Gateway stable and destination consistently high: distance, ISP routing, congestion, or server geography may be responsible.
- Gateway stable and destination intermittently timing out: investigate packet loss, route instability, filtering, or the server’s availability.
- Ping fails but Minecraft connects: do not assume the game is losing packets. Some networks or hosts block or deprioritize ICMP ping replies.
Microsoft cautions that ping alone does not prove application-level connectivity. Minecraft may be listening on a particular TCP or UDP port even when ICMP replies are blocked. When appropriate, test the actual listening port with a port-aware tool such as Telnet or PsPing, following Microsoft’s TCP/IP troubleshooting guidance.
Use pathping while the problem is happening
pathping <minecraft-server-address>
Allow pathping to complete its statistics phase. The first trace is not the final result. The command measures latency and reported loss across intermediate hops, helping show whether a problem begins near your network or farther along the route. Microsoft documents pathping in its Windows command reference.
Interpret the output carefully. Loss reported at one intermediate router is not automatically proof that the router is dropping your Minecraft traffic: that device may simply deprioritize or rate-limit ICMP replies. Loss that continues through subsequent hops and reaches the destination is more significant. Repeat the test during an active lag episode if possible.
Packet loss can result from congestion, local firewall or policy filtering, exhausted device resources, route failures, expired sessions, or MTU problems. It can also affect an application even when ordinary websites appear to work. If the route test implicates the ISP, save timestamps and results rather than repeatedly changing Minecraft settings.

- Lower the workload temporarily. In Minecraft’s video settings, reduce render distance and graphics quality, and disable shaders or demanding visual effects. In Bedrock, use the equivalent video settings available on your platform and version.
- Test without mods, add-ons, and resource packs. A clean test distinguishes the base game from a changed installation.
- Update the graphics driver and game. Reboot after a driver update if requested by the installer.
- Close local applications. Check whether browsers, recording tools, overlays, cloud sync, downloads, or security scans are consuming CPU, GPU, memory, disk, or bandwidth.
- Check heat and throttling. If performance starts normally and deteriorates after several minutes, thermal throttling or power-management behavior may be involved.
Do not treat render distance or FPS as a measure of server health. Lowering render distance may make your screen smoother while doing nothing for another player’s delayed interactions or for a server that is missing ticks.
If Windows still has local cleanup or stability problems after these checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional tool for PC cleanup and performance investigation; it does not repair Minecraft server lag, high ping, or packet loss.
Java memory allocation: change it cautiously
More Java heap is not automatically better. Mojang’s Java guidance says allocation should match the system’s available RAM, warns that systems with 4 GB of RAM or less may need a lower allocation for stability, and recommends not exceeding roughly half of available RAM on 64-bit systems. This guidance concerns the Java client; it is not a universal dedicated-server configuration.
If you change the Java launcher’s -Xmx value, leave enough memory for Windows, the launcher, graphics software, drivers, and other applications. A larger heap cannot fix high ping, packet loss, a bad route, or a server’s low TPS. Back up important worlds before changing launcher or server JVM arguments, and avoid copying random JVM flags from “FPS boost” guides without a reproducible reason.
If everyone is affected: diagnose server tick lag
Use this branch when all players experience delayed actions, mobs and redstone pause, the console reports severe tick warnings, or the server’s TPS falls. The most useful evidence is server-side TPS, MSPT, profiling data, logs, and host resource usage—not a player’s ping alone.
Understand TPS and MSPT
On Paper, the normal target is 20 ticks per second. MSPT means milliseconds per tick: the time the server needs to complete one game tick. To sustain 20 TPS, the server generally needs to keep MSPT below 50 ms. A rising MSPT or falling TPS indicates that the server’s simulation workload is too large for the available processing time.
TPS is not ping. A player can have low ping to a server with poor TPS, or high ping to a server whose simulation is healthy. Paper’s command documentation explains the relationship between TPS and MSPT. Paper also describes a tick taking 10 seconds or more as severe lag; a warning of that scale calls for profiling and log investigation rather than a cosmetic settings change.

Profile during the lag, not after it
On Paper 1.21 and later, spark is bundled and is the preferred profiler. Paper says that Timings is unmaintained, difficult for beginners, deprecated, and disabled by default in 1.21. Start a timed profile from the server console or an authorized in-game account:
/spark profiler start --timeout 600
For an intermittent problem, profile only long ticks:
/spark profiler start --only-ticks-over 100 --timeout 300
If you run the command from a server console, follow that console’s command syntax; the leading slash is normally used in-game. The resulting spark report can identify expensive plugins, entities, chunk operations, or other work on the server’s main thread. Capture it while players are reproducing the problem. Paper’s profiling documentation explains the current workflow.

When Paper prints a severe tick warning, examine the associated stack trace and compare it with the spark report. Do not assume that the warning identifies the ultimate cause by itself: it shows that the current tick took too long, while the profile helps show what consumed the time.
Investigate the workload the profile identifies
- Entities and mob farms: Large numbers of mobs, animals, dropped items, villagers, or other entities can increase tick work. Find the area or farm responsible before removing anything, and make a backup before destructive changes.
- Redstone and block updates: Complex clocks, farms, observers, pistons, hoppers, and other update-heavy builds can put sustained work on the main thread.
- New chunk generation: Several players exploring in different directions can create generation and loading spikes, especially on slower storage or a constrained host.
- Plugins and mods: A plugin or mod that performs expensive synchronous work can dominate a profile. Update it, configure it, or give the developer the spark report rather than blindly removing unrelated plugins.
- World saves and storage: Slow disks, save activity, or a host with overloaded storage can create pauses that look like general server lag.
- CPU limits: Minecraft’s main simulation thread can be limited by the host’s single-thread performance, a shared-host allocation, or a hosting-panel CPU cap even when total CPU usage looks deceptively low.
- Memory pressure: Check the actual host and panel limits, garbage-collection behavior, and whether the process was killed. Paper notes that an out-of-memory kill can occur when a hosting panel’s memory limit is too close to the configured Java heap limit.
- Network capacity: If MSPT is healthy but players in one location experience loss or delay, investigate the host’s uplink and route rather than adding RAM.
Test view-distance and simulation-distance as controlled experiments
Paper defines view-distance as the radius, in chunks, of world data sent to clients. simulation-distance is the radius, also in chunks, within which living entities are updated by the server. They are radii, not diameters.
Lowering these settings can reduce chunk transmission and simulation work, but it also reduces the visible and active world range. It is not a universal cure for an expensive plugin, entity buildup, redstone workload, storage bottleneck, or poor CPU allocation. Paper documents these settings in its server.properties reference.
Use a controlled test:
- Record the current values, TPS, MSPT, spark findings, player count, and workload.
- Lower one setting modestly rather than changing several settings at once.
- Restart the server or use the configuration method documented for your software and hosting panel.
- Reproduce the same activity—ideally the same world area, number of players, and exploration or farm workload.
- Compare MSPT, TPS, spark data, chunk-loading behavior, and what players actually experience.
Paper also documents per-player chunk-generation and chunk-load controls in its global configuration reference. These controls can reduce bursts during exploration, but setting them too low may trade a sharp spike for slower world loading. Change them only after you understand the hosting workload.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not solve every server problem by adding RAM
Heap size is only one resource. More allocation cannot make a slow CPU execute plugins faster, repair storage stalls, improve a network route, or remove packet loss. Excessive heap allocation can also leave too little RAM for the operating system and other services.
Before changing server JVM arguments, back up the world, check the host’s real memory limit, and review logs for garbage collection or out-of-memory events. If a panel enforces a limit, the panel limit—not merely the Java -Xmx value—determines whether the process can remain alive.
When the server is healthy but players still lag
If spark shows normal server work and MSPT stays comfortably below the 50 ms target while one player has delayed actions, the server is probably not the primary cause. Compare the affected player with others:
- One player, one location: test that player’s Wi-Fi, Ethernet connection, device, VPN, firewall inspection, router, and ISP.
- Several players using the same Wi-Fi: investigate the access point, local congestion, interference, and other household traffic.
- Players in one geographic region: suspect provider routing, peering, or server geography. Players elsewhere being normal is evidence against a universal Minecraft setting.
- Everyone at a particular time: compare server MSPT with route tests and host resource graphs. A busy host, ISP congestion, or scheduled backup can create a time-dependent pattern.
If only one player has high ping or packet loss, giving the server more RAM will not repair that player’s route. If every player has high latency but the server’s ticks are healthy, consider where the server is hosted and how the affected players reach it.
Java, Bedrock, and LAN checks
Java server compatibility
Java multiplayer requires a compatible client and server version. Modded servers also require compatible mod loaders, mods, and configurations. If the problem is that a player cannot join at all rather than that an established session is lagging, verify the edition, release version, mod set, and server software before investigating ping.

For a self-hosted Java server, Mojang’s server setup guide covers the Java requirement, server.properties, and the server port. Changing home-router settings or exposing a home public IP has security implications. Do not casually forward a port without understanding router rules, host firewall rules, authentication, software updates, and what service is exposed to the internet.
Bedrock multiplayer
For Bedrock, make sure all participants are updated to the latest version available for their platform. Console multiplayer may also require the relevant platform’s online multiplayer subscription. These are access and compatibility issues, not ordinary high-ping fixes. Mojang lists edition, update, and platform checks in its Bedrock multiplayer connectivity guidance.
Java LAN play on Windows
LAN Java play requires all players to be on the same local network. If a Windows host is not discoverable, Mojang documents checking the network profile and, where appropriate, setting the connection to Private so local discovery is allowed. Do this only on a trusted home or local network—not on an untrusted public network. A Private profile is not a cure for high ping to an internet server.

What not to recommend as a “lag fix”
- Changing DNS: DNS mainly affects finding the server’s address. It normally does not lower the ongoing latency of the game route or repair packet loss.
- Adding RAM automatically: RAM does not fix packet loss, ISP routing, Wi-Fi interference, or a main-thread CPU bottleneck.
- Confusing render distance with server health: client render distance affects what your device renders; server
view-distanceandsimulation-distanceaffect server work and data delivery in different ways. - Disabling security permanently: firewalls and antivirus tools should be restored after a controlled test and configured correctly rather than left off.
- Declaring packet loss from one missed ping: ICMP may be blocked or deprioritized. Look for a repeated pattern, destination loss, and matching in-game symptoms.
- Copying random JVM flags or registry tweaks: change one evidence-based variable at a time and keep a rollback path.
- Choosing a universal distance, TPS, or RAM value: suitable settings vary with hardware, player count, world complexity, edition, server software, and version.

For operators whose diagnostics confirm a CPU, storage, uplink, or geographic-routing limitation in self-hosting, managed Minecraft server hosting can be a reasonable option to evaluate. It is not a fix for a player’s bad Wi-Fi or a local device problem, and moving providers should follow evidence from TPS, host metrics, and route tests rather than being the first response.
Verification checklist: prove that the fix worked
A fix is credible only when the symptom improves under a comparable workload. Re-test as follows:
- Use the same Minecraft edition, version, server, and world area.
- Repeat with a similar player count and the same activity—for example, the same farm, redstone build, or exploration route.
- Test during the same time window if the issue is time-dependent.
- For a player-side fix, compare the gateway test, destination latency or loss, and in-game behavior.
- For a server-side fix, compare TPS, MSPT, spark results, host resource usage, and player reports.
- Change one major variable at a time whenever practical.
- Keep the original settings and test results so you can roll back a change that only appeared to help.
If several things changed together—such as a router reboot, a graphics update, and a server-distance change—describe the result as an improvement that coincided with those changes, not proof that one particular setting caused it.
For source material, see Mojang’s client lag guidance, Java multiplayer troubleshooting, Microsoft’s packet-loss diagnosis, and Paper’s server troubleshooting documentation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: identify whether the failure is FPS, server ticks, latency, packet loss, or jitter before changing settings. Stable gateway tests and an Ethernet comparison isolate the local network; pathping helps investigate the route; Paper’s TPS, MSPT, and spark data identify server workloads. Change one variable, reproduce the same workload, and verify the result.
