How to Install SteamOS on the ROG Ally X for Better Handheld Gaming

SteamOS can give the ROG Ally X a console-like experience, but support is beta and a clean installation erases Windows. Here is the safe installation and rollback process.

Yes, you can install SteamOS on the ROG Ally X using Valve’s official recovery image—but the Ally X is currently listed as beta-compatible hardware, not a fully certified “Powered by SteamOS” device. SteamOS may deliver a more console-like interface, simpler suspend/resume, and better frame pacing in some games. It is not a guaranteed FPS or battery-life upgrade.

The clean-install option, Wipe Device & Install SteamOS, erases Windows, installed games, applications, and local files. Back up your data and prepare Windows recovery media before you begin.

Should you install SteamOS on the ROG Ally X?

SteamOS is a gaming-focused Linux operating system with Steam Game Mode, Desktop Mode, Steam Input, Steam Cloud, and Proton for running many Windows games. Valve’s current support information distinguishes fully supported devices such as the Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go S from beta-compatible hardware. The ROG Ally and ROG Ally X appear in the beta category, so installation is possible but hardware support may be incomplete or change between releases.

SteamOS is a good fit if you:

  • Mostly play games from Steam.
  • Want a controller-first interface instead of the Windows desktop.
  • Value quick suspend and resume.
  • Prefer fewer Windows background processes.
  • Are comfortable troubleshooting Proton, Linux software, and beta hardware support.

Stay with Windows if you depend on Xbox Game Pass PC, Windows-only applications, ASUS Armoury Crate SE, proprietary performance controls, vendor firmware tools, certain third-party launchers, or multiplayer games whose anti-cheat does not support Linux. SteamOS is not a drop-in replacement for every Windows gaming service.

Full replacement versus dual boot: replacing Windows is simpler and gives SteamOS the entire internal drive, but it is destructive. Dual boot preserves Windows for incompatible games and utilities, but requires partitioning and bootloader management. Unless Valve provides current official Ally X dual-boot instructions, treat dual boot as an advanced, community-supported project rather than the standard installation path.

What “improved performance” means

SteamOS can improve the handheld experience and may improve performance in some games, but it is not a universal FPS upgrade. Results depend on the game, Proton version, graphics driver, kernel support, power profile, resolution, refresh rate, and graphics settings.

Possible benefits include:

  • A direct boot into Steam Game Mode.
  • Controller-focused navigation and Steam Input.
  • Fewer Windows background tasks.
  • Potentially smoother frame pacing in particular games.
  • Convenient shader caching and suspend/resume.

Other games may perform worse, fail to launch, or lose features because of Proton, DRM, anti-cheat, launchers, codecs, mods, or missing vendor utilities. Battery life, fan noise, temperatures, and input latency also require game-by-game testing. Do not compare Windows running at 30 W with SteamOS using an unknown power profile and call the result a software improvement.

What you need before starting

  • ROG Ally X connected to AC power.
  • A second computer for downloading and writing the image.
  • A USB flash drive of at least 8 GB; a larger reputable drive is more practical.
  • A USB-C hub or adapter with power delivery if necessary.
  • A keyboard and mouse.
  • A second storage device for backups, not the Ally X’s internal SSD.
  • Your Steam account credentials and two-factor authentication method.
  • Windows recovery media or an ASUS recovery option.

Back up everything you may need

Save Documents, Downloads, screenshots, recordings, game saves, emulator files, configuration files, and non-Steam game data to another device. Back up legally obtained emulator BIOS files and ROM metadata where applicable. Export or record custom controller layouts, macros, Armoury Crate profiles, TDP settings, and fan settings.

Cloud saves are not a complete backup. Some games do not support Steam Cloud, and Proton prefixes or non-Steam launcher data may not be restored automatically. Also save browser passwords, authenticator recovery codes, product keys, and your installed-games and launcher list.

If Windows device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, save the recovery key. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page is available at microsoft.com/software-download/windows11. Keep the recovery media and backups disconnected until needed.

Download the official SteamOS recovery image

Use Valve’s current SteamOS installation and repair page. Check its current device-support information and download the stable recovery image offered there. Do not use an old image copied from a forum, video description, or unofficial mirror, and do not assume that a Steam Deck image provides complete Ally X driver support merely because it boots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SteamOS versions and image filenames change. As a point-in-time reference, Valve’s August 7, 2026 announcement referenced SteamOS 3.8.16 as stable and 3.8.25 as beta. Use the stable image currently supplied by Valve rather than hard-coding either version.

Create a bootable SteamOS USB

Windows: Rufus

  1. Download Rufus from its official website.
  2. Insert the USB drive.
  3. Open Rufus and select the SteamOS recovery image.
  4. Confirm that the selected target is the USB drive—not an internal or backup disk.
  5. Start the write process and accept the warning that the USB will be formatted.
  6. Safely eject the drive after Rufus reports completion.

Verify the target drive carefully. Choosing the wrong disk can destroy its contents.

macOS or Linux: Balena Etcher

  1. Install Balena Etcher.
  2. Choose the SteamOS recovery image.
  3. Select the USB drive.
  4. Flash and verify the image.
  5. Eject the USB safely.

Linux command line

Valve documents this command pattern:

bzcat steamdeck-recovery-4.img.bz2 | sudo dd if=/dev/stdin of=/dev/sdX oflag=sync status=progress bs=128M

/dev/sdX is a placeholder. Replace it with the correct USB device identifier after checking with your distribution’s disk utility or commands such as lsblk. Do not paste the placeholder literally, and do not guess. A wrong identifier can overwrite an internal drive.

Disable Secure Boot on the Ally X

Valve’s current instructions indicate that most non-Steam Deck devices need Secure Boot disabled before restoring the image from USB. Secure Boot protects the boot chain, so disabling it reduces that protection. Record the original setting and change nothing else unless the current Valve or ASUS instructions specifically require it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Shut the Ally X down completely.
  2. Enter UEFI/BIOS using the current ASUS-approved method for your firmware version.
  3. Open the Security or boot-security section.
  4. Disable Secure Boot.
  5. Save the change and exit.
  6. Open the boot menu and select the USB device in UEFI mode.

Valve’s support page includes an example for the ROG Ally, but button sequences and menu labels can vary across ASUS firmware revisions. Do not assume the original Ally instructions are guaranteed to match your Ally X.

Boot the recovery environment

  1. Connect the recovery USB before powering on, if possible.
  2. Connect AC power. If the Ally X has only one usable USB-C connection, use a powered USB-C hub or adapter.
  3. Use the current ASUS method to open the boot menu.
  4. Select an entry labeled similarly to EFI USB Device.

A wired keyboard can make firmware and recovery navigation easier. If the USB does not appear, shut down and try again rather than selecting an unknown internal disk.

Install SteamOS

The recovery environment presents several choices. Read the target-drive information and stop if the internal SSD is missing or its capacity looks wrong.

Wipe Device & Install SteamOS

This is the clean replacement option. It erases Windows, existing operating systems, installed applications, games, partitions, and local user data. Select it only after confirming that your backups and Windows recovery plan work.

Repair SteamOS

Repair is intended to reinstall or fix SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content where supported. It is not normally the starting option for replacing Windows.

Reimage Device

Reimage restores the device image and erases user data. Treat it as destructive.

Complete first boot

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Sign in to Steam and complete two-factor authentication.
  3. Allow SteamOS to download and install updates.
  4. Restart after major updates.
  5. Confirm that the internal SSD is detected at approximately its expected capacity.

Before evaluating games, test the touchscreen, sticks, triggers, buttons, speakers, microphone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, vibration, gyro, rear buttons, sleep/wake, and external display output. Check the display’s native resolution and refresh-rate options. Also test SD-card behavior, dock compatibility, and external controllers.

Game Mode is the console-style interface. Desktop Mode is useful for software unavailable in Game Mode, including some launchers, tools, mods, and configuration utilities. You may need to set a desktop password depending on the current build or software you install.

Configure games and performance

Start with a controlled baseline. For a Windows-versus-SteamOS comparison, use the same game build, resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset, frame limiter, brightness, and power setting. Record average FPS, 1% lows, frame pacing, fan noise, temperature, and battery drain if you want meaningful results.

  • Test one native Linux game and one Proton game.
  • Test a demanding AAA title and a lightweight game.
  • Use per-game performance profiles where available.
  • Set a frame cap appropriate to the display and game.
  • Allow shader compilation and first-launch processing to finish.
  • Test FSR or other upscaling options instead of assuming they always help.
  • Prefer the stable update channel unless you intentionally want beta software.

Valve’s SteamOS announcements have documented version-specific issues. For example, an August 2026 beta announcement noted a composition-related performance issue in some cases when FSR was enabled in beta, while stating that the issue was fixed in stable SteamOS 3.8.16. Check current release notes before diagnosing a performance change.

Check Proton and game compatibility

Proton runs many Windows games on SteamOS, but “Playable” is not the same as identical to Windows. Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility status and recent community reports on ProtonDB. Community reports are useful clues, not guarantees.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Kernel-level or unsupported anti-cheat.
  • Third-party launchers and DRM.
  • Mods, overlays, and external tools.
  • Games requiring Windows codecs or services.
  • Non-Steam games that require Desktop Mode.

Test at least one multiplayer game, one non-Steam game, and one title using a third-party launcher before deciding that SteamOS meets your needs.

Ally X features to validate

The Ally X is not a Steam Deck. Features that depend on Windows software or ASUS-specific support may behave differently. Test:

  • Performance-mode and TDP controls.
  • Fan curves and thermal behavior.
  • BIOS and firmware update procedures.
  • RGB lighting, gyro, haptics, and vibration.
  • Button remapping and rear-button behavior.
  • Battery charge limits.
  • USB-C display output and docks.
  • SD-card access.
  • Sleep and wake reliability.

Do not assume every Ally X feature is supported or unsupported without checking the current SteamOS build and device-specific documentation. If Armoury Crate SE or ASUS controls are essential to your use, Windows remains the lower-risk choice.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely causes First response
USB is not detected Bad flash, incompatible hub, Secure Boot, or boot-menu issue Recreate the USB, try another drive or adapter, connect AC power, and check UEFI.
Installation fails Corrupt image, storage issue, insufficient power, or USB disconnect Keep power connected, recreate the media, and retry with a known-good drive. Stop if the SSD is not detected.
Black screen or boot loop Boot-entry, display-initialization, incomplete-install, or beta-support issue Power down fully, re-enter the boot menu, and retry the recovery environment.
Wi-Fi, audio, or controls do not work Incomplete update or beta hardware support Install current stable updates, reboot, and test again.
A game will not launch Proton, launcher, DRM, anti-cheat, mods, or Windows dependency Check compatibility, try an appropriate Proton version, and remove variables such as overlays.
No TDP controls Missing ASUS utility equivalent Check current supported Linux tools; return to Windows if the controls are essential.

For broader recovery guidance, use Valve’s SteamOS recovery and troubleshooting documentation.

How to return to Windows

If SteamOS does not meet your needs, use the Windows or ASUS recovery media prepared before installation. A clean SteamOS installation normally means the original Windows partition is gone, so rollback may require a full reinstall rather than a simple switch.

  1. Boot the prepared Windows or ASUS recovery media.
  2. Reinstall Windows and restore required drivers.
  3. Reinstall ASUS utilities, including Armoury Crate SE if desired.
  4. Restore personal files and game saves from your backup.
  5. Confirm Windows boots correctly before re-enabling Secure Boot.

For ASUS-specific product and support information, use the ROG Ally X support destination.

Alternatives to Valve’s SteamOS image

Bazzite is a Fedora-based gaming distribution with handheld-focused features and an active community. It may provide device-specific conveniences, but it is not Valve’s SteamOS. ChimeraOS is another console-style Linux option with its own hardware support and update behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If compatibility is more important than changing operating systems, keep Windows and configure Steam to launch automatically into Big Picture mode. You can also improve the Windows experience by updating ASUS and AMD drivers, removing unnecessary startup applications, choosing an appropriate power profile, limiting FPS, adjusting resolution or upscaling, and checking frame-time data.

Final verdict

Install SteamOS on the ROG Ally X if you want a Steam Deck-like interface, primarily play Steam games, and accept beta-level hardware support and game-by-game troubleshooting. Keep Windows if Game Pass, launchers, competitive anti-cheat, ASUS utilities, or guaranteed compatibility matter more. In either case, treat backups and recovery media as mandatory: the installation is recoverable only if you have the tools and data needed to rebuild the device.
