Esseker can still be installed only if you can obtain a compatible copy of its map mod and mission files. The map is a legacy community project: development was abandoned, its historical Steam Workshop item (2462896799) is currently marked removed, and old mission files may not work with a current DayZ server. If you have a matching package, installation requires three separate pieces—the @Esseker mod folder, a signed mission folder in mpmissions, and the corresponding key in keys—plus a mission template and startup parameter.

Before you begin: understand Esseker’s current status
Esseker is not a maintained, current-generation DayZ map. GTXGaming describes development as abandoned and warns that the available mission files are outdated. The historical Steam Workshop listing is marked removed for violating Steam Community & Content Guidelines. That means an old tutorial can describe the correct file layout yet still fail on a modern DayZ build.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProceed only when you have all of the following:
- A legitimate, complete
@Essekermod directory (the historical Workshop item was 2462896799). - A mission package that was built for, or repaired for, the same DayZ server version you intend to run.
- The signing key supplied with that package, normally
Esseker.bikey. - Access to the server root or the host panel’s mod, mission and configuration editors.
If you can obtain only the map files but not a compatible mission, the server may load the mod and still fail during startup or present an unusable world. Treat compatibility as a prerequisite, not as a troubleshooting step after deployment.
What must be installed
Esseker is deployed as separate server components. Keeping them distinct makes diagnosis much easier.

| Component | Typical location | Purpose | Common failure when missing or wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
@Esseker folder |
Server root or host mod directory | Map assets and mod metadata loaded by the server and required by joining clients | Server starts without the map, reports missing content, or clients receive a version/content mismatch |
| Mission folder | mpmissions/dayzOffline.esseker or provider-specific equivalent |
World configuration, economy and spawn data for the Esseker terrain | Startup failure, fallback to another mission, or a server that never reaches the lobby |
| Signing key | Server keys folder |
Allows the server to verify the mod’s signature | Signature or key errors and rejected connections |
| Mission template | serverDZ.cfg or host Config.cfg |
Tells DayZ which mission folder to load | “Mission not found” or a boot failure caused by a name mismatch |
| Startup mod parameter | Command line, launch configuration or host installer | Loads @Esseker at process start |
Map files are present but the server does not load the mod |
The mission name is not universal across providers. One commonly used spelling is dayzOffline.esseker; GTXGaming’s hosted workflow shows dayzOffline.Esseker with a capital E. Use the exact folder name that exists on your server and repeat that spelling, including capitalization, in the configuration.
Back up and stop the server
Do not copy files over a running instance. Stop the DayZ server from the control panel or service manager, then make a restorable backup.
The Tool Desk

serverDZ.cfg(or the provider’sConfig.cfg), launch settings and currentmpmissions. - Back up the
keysdirectory before adding or replacing a key. - If the host supports snapshots, create one before installing the map.
- Record the current DayZ server build so you can verify that the mission package targets the same build.
A backup matters because an incompatible mission can prevent the service from starting, leaving you without a working configuration to compare.
Install the Esseker mod files
Dedicated server or self-managed host
- Obtain the complete, compatible map package. Do not mix an old mission with a newer map archive unless the package documentation explicitly says they are compatible.
- Upload the folder named
@Essekerto the server root, alongside the normal DayZ server folders, or to the mod directory defined by your hosting setup. - Check the resulting path. The project README’s requirement is an up-to-date
@Essekerfolder in the server root; avoid an accidental nested path such as@Esseker/@Esseker. - Open the package and identify its key file. It is usually named
Esseker.bikey, although a mission package can supply a differently named key. - Copy that
.bikeyfile into the server’skeysdirectory. Put the file itself inkeys, not the entire mod folder.
Preserve the directory contents and names supplied by the package. Renaming the mod directory can break a launch parameter or a dependency reference, while renaming the mission directory without changing the template guarantees a mismatch.
Hosted control panel
Many DayZ hosts provide a map-pack installer. If your panel has one, install the Esseker pack through that tool first; it may place the mod and key automatically. You still need to verify the mission files and selected template, because an installer cannot repair a mission that is incompatible with the current DayZ build.
After installation, use the panel’s file manager or SFTP access to confirm that:
@Essekeris in the panel’s active mod location.- The key is in the server
keysfolder. - The Esseker mission directory is directly under
mpmissions.
Upload the Esseker mission
- Locate the mission directory in the compatible mission package.
- Upload it to the server’s
mpmissionsdirectory. - Use the provider’s expected name, normally
dayzOffline.essekerordayzOffline.Esseker. Do not assume the capitalization from another host’s guide. - Open the directory and verify that the mission files are at its top level. A nested path such as
mpmissions/dayzOffline.esseker/dayzOffline.essekerwill not match the template. - Compare the package’s mission files with the DayZ server build. If the package predates a major update, expect to update or repair it before production use.
The mission is not optional map scenery. It defines the offline world that DayZ starts, so the server can have a perfectly valid mod folder and still fail because the mission is absent, nested incorrectly or too old.
Point the server at the Esseker mission
Editing serverDZ.cfg
In a self-managed installation, edit the class Missions block in serverDZ.cfg. A typical template is:
class Missions
{
class DayZ
{
template="dayzOffline.esseker";
};
};
Replace the value with the exact directory name under mpmissions. If your folder is dayzOffline.Esseker, use that spelling instead:
class Missions
{
class DayZ
{
template="dayzOffline.Esseker";
};
};
Keep the quotation marks, braces and semicolons. A syntactically damaged configuration can look like a map problem in the panel log, so validate the file before restarting.

Editing a hosting panel’s Config.cfg
Open the panel’s configuration editor, select the Esseker mission template and enter the exact value shown by the uploaded folder. GTXGaming’s hosted instructions use dayzOffline.Esseker. Save the configuration and restart the service; do not leave the panel’s selector pointing at dayzOffline.chernarusplus or another default mission.
Add Esseker to the startup mod list
The server must load the map mod during startup. On a command-line installation, add @Esseker; to the server’s mod parameter. A semicolon separates it from other entries:
-mod=@Esseker;
If other mods already exist, append Esseker using the same separator format used by your launcher, for example:
-mod=@ExistingMod;@Esseker;
Do not add a second copy of the same folder under a different name. On a hosted panel, the map-pack installer may manage the startup parameter for you. Check the generated launch line or active-mod list rather than adding a manual entry that could load the map twice.

- Confirm the server is stopped while you finish the file and configuration checks.
- Start it with Esseker as the only newly added mod.
- Watch the live console or server log until the process reaches the lobby or shows a normal listening state.
- Join with a client that has the same Esseker Workshop content or compatible package version as the server.
- Spawn, move through several areas, and reconnect once. This catches mission initialization and client-content problems that a successful process start may not reveal.
- Stop the server and save the working configuration before adding any unrelated mod.
Only after a clean Esseker boot should you restore other mods. Add them one at a time, restarting and testing after each addition. GTXGaming warns that other mods may be incompatible; testing individually identifies the offending addition instead of leaving several possible causes at once.

Client requirements and content mismatches
Every joining player needs the same Esseker content lineage as the server. A client using a different Workshop revision, incomplete download or different mission-dependent files can be rejected even when the server itself starts normally.
- Have the player verify that the Esseker mod is installed and enabled in the DayZ launcher.
- Make sure the client’s downloaded files correspond to the server package; do not combine an unrelated repack with the server’s mission.
- Remove stale duplicate copies if the launcher has retained multiple versions, then download the intended package again.
- Test with one clean client before inviting the whole player group.
The historical Workshop counters—84,420 unique visitors, 153,341 current subscribers and 1,488 favorites when captured—describe listing activity, not active players or present-day server compatibility. They do not establish that the removed item is currently downloadable or maintained.

Troubleshoot startup and connection failures
| Symptom | Checks in order | Likely correction |
|---|---|---|
| Server does not start | Read the first error in the server log; compare the template value with the exact folder under mpmissions; verify that @Esseker exists in the active mod path. |
Correct capitalization or spelling, move a nested mission up one level, or restore the missing mod folder. |
| “Mission not found” or immediate return to the service manager | Check that the mission directory is directly inside mpmissions and that the configuration points to that directory, not to a zip file or parent folder. |
Rename the folder only if necessary, then make the template match it character for character. |
| Signature or key error | Confirm the supplied .bikey is in the server’s active keys folder, not inside @Esseker or a backup directory. |
Copy the key delivered with the mission/mod package and restart the server. |
| Missing map, invisible terrain or client mismatch | Compare the client and server Esseker versions; check for incomplete Workshop downloads and duplicate mod copies. | Use the same compatible package on both sides and remove stale duplicates. |
| Failure after a DayZ update | Assume the mission is outdated before changing random launch settings. Compare the server build with the mission package’s supported build and inspect the log for changed class or world-file errors. | Obtain an updated or repaired mission package. If none exists, the legacy map may not be usable on that DayZ version. |
| Works alone but fails with other mods | Stop the server, remove all additional mods, confirm Esseker still boots, then restore additions one at a time. | Leave out the incompatible mod or find a compatible version; do not troubleshoot several new mods simultaneously. |
Hosted-panel recovery procedure
If you use a managed DayZ panel and the first attempt fails, return to a known clean state:
- Stop the server and use the panel’s backup or snapshot feature.
- Run the map-pack installer again only if it reports a missing or incomplete mod; avoid repeatedly reinstalling a mission that is simply too old.
- Upload the updated or repaired mission directory to
mpmissions. - Open the panel’s
Config.cfgeditor and selectdayzOffline.Essekeror the exact spelling of your uploaded directory. - Save, restart and watch the log through the lobby.
- Once it works, add other mods individually and keep a copy of the final configuration.
A panel can simplify file placement and launch settings, but it cannot make abandoned mission code compatible with a newer DayZ executable. If a clean installation fails immediately after an update, the mission package is the primary suspect.
How to decide whether Esseker is practical today
Use these criteria before investing time in a public server:
Best Value
- Dress in style on Nasdara, Sakhal, Chernarus or Livonia with our design. Built to survive in the badlands of dayz in any zombie wasteland so take a day off and dress to impress with our low insulation but high cool Z inspired design.
- Compatible with all PC gamers or console players. Game in comfort for dayz. Also a great gift idea for any discerning online survival gamers.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Maintenance: development is abandoned, so there is no dependable stream of fixes for future DayZ updates.
- Mission compatibility: the available mission must match your exact server build; old files can require repair.
- Acquisition: the historical Workshop listing is removed, so obtaining a complete, legitimate package may be difficult.
- Hosting support: a panel with a map-pack installer and mission-template editor reduces manual work, but does not remove compatibility risk.
- Dependencies and performance: verify the package’s own requirements and test load time, terrain streaming and stability before opening the server to players.
- Community support: expect fewer current fixes and troubleshooting answers than for actively maintained maps.
If any of these checks fail—especially the absence of a matching mission—choose a maintained map rather than exposing players to repeated startup failures.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install Esseker from the Steam Workshop today?
The historical Workshop item is currently marked removed, so availability is not guaranteed. You need a complete, compatible copy of the mod and mission files from a legitimate source; an old item ID alone does not provide a working installation.
Is copying @Esseker enough?
No. The mod folder, mission folder, signing key, mission template and startup parameter are separate deployment items. Omitting any one of them can stop startup or prevent clients from joining.
Why does the folder use lowercase on one server and a capital E on another?
Providers package and name missions differently. dayzOffline.esseker and dayzOffline.Esseker are not interchangeable strings in a configuration; use the exact directory name present on your server.
What should I do after a DayZ update breaks the server?
Check the mission package first. GTXGaming warns that old Esseker mission files may not match current DayZ. Obtain an updated or repaired mission for the new build, or revert to your backup while you evaluate whether the legacy map remains viable.
Can I add other mods before testing the map?
Do not. Prove that Esseker starts and a clean client can join with no other newly added mods, then restore additions individually so an incompatibility is identifiable.
Do Workshop subscriber numbers show that Esseker is active?
No. The published visitor, subscriber and favorite figures are Workshop counters captured at one point in time, not active-player measurements and not evidence of current maintenance.
