What you need before installing Froxlor
Froxlor is a server control panel that generates and maintains configuration for web, mail and FTP services. Because it integrates with those system services, its documentation recommends Debian or Ubuntu rather than an arbitrary Linux distribution.
- A fresh Debian or Ubuntu VPS with root or equivalent administrative access.
- A public IPv4 address; add a public IPv6 address if you intend to use IPv6.
- A dedicated fully qualified domain name (FQDN), such as
panel.example.net, reserved for Froxlor. Do not reuse it for a customer website or mail service. - DNS A and, where applicable, AAAA records pointing the FQDN to the VPS before running the installer.
- Firewall and provider security-group rules allowing HTTP and HTTPS, plus any mail or FTP ports you plan to operate.
- Enough disk space and memory for the operating system, the selected web stack, databases and hosted sites.
Use a provider snapshot or an external backup after the initial configuration. That is operational protection, not a Froxlor installation requirement.

Choose the VPS and network controls
When comparing VPS plans, prioritize a provider that gives you true root access, a public IPv4 address and control over reverse DNS. Those capabilities make it possible to set the panel hostname correctly and operate mail services without depending on a provider’s temporary naming scheme. IPv6 is useful only when the provider routes it to the VPS and you can publish a matching AAAA record.
Keep the panel on its own hostname even if the VPS will host many customer domains. A name such as panel.example.net should remain dedicated to administration, certificates and the Froxlor interface. Register the domain and create DNS records before installation; changing the panel name after services and certificates are generated creates avoidable reconfiguration work.

Supported operating systems and software
The current package guide lists these base images:

Froxlor supports Apache2 and nginx. Its stated PHP range is 7.4 through 8.5, with the session, ctype, xml, filter, posix, mbstring, curl, gmp and json extensions. The current database requirement is MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.7.
For hosting more than one PHP version, use PHP-FPM or FCGID. Froxlor’s PHP guidance says multiple versions are not possible with mod_php and advises avoiding it for security reasons. PHP-FPM is enabled by default on new installations.
Do not mix an unsupported operating-system image with a supported repository line. The distribution codename determines which packages APT receives, so verify the image and codename before adding any source. If your provider offers a newer image that is not in the table, wait for compatibility confirmation rather than forcing a nearby codename.
Prepare the VPS and DNS
1. Set the operating-system hostname
Give the server the same FQDN you will use for the panel, for example panel.example.net. On a systemd-based image, set it with:

2. Create DNS records
Create an A record for the public IPv4 address and an AAAA record only when IPv6 routing is configured on the VPS. Check resolution from another machine before installation:

dig +short panel.example.net AAAABoth records must resolve to this VPS. If DNS has not propagated, automatic HTTPS issuance and virtual-host generation can fail.
3. Update the base system
On Debian or Ubuntu, update the package index and apply security updates before adding Froxlor:

apt update && apt upgradeDo not install a competing control panel or preconfigure multiple web servers on the same fresh host. Let one Froxlor installation own the service configuration.
4. Check provider and firewall settings
Allow inbound TCP 80 and 443 at both layers: the VPS firewall and the provider’s security group. Add mail and FTP ports only if you will operate those services. A DNS record can be correct while certificate issuance still fails because a provider-level rule silently drops HTTP traffic.
Option A: the official quick-start installer
The quick-start route is the best fit for a fresh, single-host VPS because it installs a complete default stack and asks guided questions. Run it as root:

If you prefer nginx or need to select a database engine, provide the documented flags before the first run.

Useful quick-start flags

Use the installer’s own help output if you need the exact syntax for combining flags with your release. A typical unattended invocation is:
curl -fsSL https://get.froxlor.org | bash -s -- --unattendedUnattended mode is appropriate only after every required value is supplied and DNS has been verified. A missing hostname, address or service choice can leave a partially configured server because the command does not stop to ask you for a correction. For a first deployment, interactive mode is safer: read each prompt, confirm the selected web server and database, and note any generated values before allowing the script to continue.
Save credentials while the installer is running
The quick-start guide prints the generated database and administrator passwords in the terminal. Copy them into a password manager immediately. They are not displayed again later, and losing them can turn a straightforward setup into a recovery exercise. Do not place those credentials in shell history, a public ticket or an unencrypted text file.
Open the panel
When the script finishes, browse to the dedicated FQDN over HTTPS. If the certificate is not available yet, test HTTP only long enough to diagnose DNS or firewall issues, then return to HTTPS. Review the generated virtual-host and PHP-FPM settings before adding customer domains.
What the default profile provides
The default profile is more than a web server installer. Apache handles HTTP, PHP-FPM executes PHP, MariaDB stores panel and customer data, ProFTPd supplies FTP, and Postfix plus Dovecot provide the mail components. If you do not intend to offer mail or FTP, review those services after installation and restrict their firewall exposure instead of assuming every installed daemon should be public.
Option B: install from Froxlor’s signed APT repository
Choose the APT method when you want Froxlor delivered through the normal Debian or Ubuntu package workflow. First install the transport, certificate and key utilities:

Install the package

apt install froxlorThe package pulls in required components such as the web server. Continue with Froxlor’s general installation flow, including creation of a privileged database account and the web-based requirement check. Confirm that the selected distribution codename and repository path match before troubleshooting package errors.
APT is a good operational fit when your team already tracks package updates and configuration changes through the distribution’s normal tools. It is less of a one-command experience than quick start, but the repository and signed key are explicit and easy to audit. Keep a record of the source file and key location so a future administrator can reproduce the installation safely.
Option C: manual archive installation
The tarball method is a fallback for a custom server layout or a situation in which the package and quick-start paths are unsuitable. It requires a recent Apache2 or nginx installation, PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, and a dedicated FQDN.
- Download the current stable Froxlor archive into the intended web root.
- Extract the archive and remove the downloaded archive so it cannot be served accidentally.
- Set ownership to the account used by the web server, commonly
www-dataon Debian/Ubuntu orapacheon other systems. - Configure the virtual host so its document root points to the extracted Froxlor directory and the dedicated FQDN resolves to it.
- Open the Froxlor path in a browser and complete the requirement check.
- Enter a privileged database account. The installer uses that account to create and remove customer databases and users, then creates an unprivileged Froxlor database user for normal operation.
A typical privileged account can be created in the database server as follows. Replace the sample password with a unique secret before running it:

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;Use the account only for the installation workflow and protect its credentials. Do not copy an example password into production. Because this account can grant privileges and remove customer databases, limit its use to the installer and retain the unprivileged account for everyday panel operations.
Choose Apache or nginx and configure PHP correctly
Apache2
Apache 2.4 is the default selected by the quick-start profile. Pair it with PHP-FPM for the panel and hosted sites. This keeps PHP execution in separate pools and allows different sites to use different PHP versions.
nginx
Select nginx with the quick-start web-server option or configure it in the manual path. nginx passes PHP requests to PHP-FPM; it does not use mod_php.
PHP-FPM and FCGID versus mod_php
When multiple PHP versions are required, create or select the corresponding FPM pools (or use FCGID where appropriate) and assign each hosted domain to the intended version. Froxlor explicitly states that multi-version operation is not possible with mod_php and recommends avoiding it for security reasons.

Verify that the required extensions are installed for the PHP version used by the panel: session, ctype, xml, filter, posix, mbstring, curl, gmp and json. If the installer reports a missing extension, install the matching distribution package, restart the relevant PHP-FPM service and rerun the requirement check.
Do not assume that installing one PHP version’s modules satisfies another version. Every FPM version selected for hosted domains needs its own compatible extension set, and the panel’s requirement check should be treated as the final authority before publishing a site.
Database selection and privileges
Use MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.7, the versions listed by the current compatibility guidance. The installer needs a privileged account initially so it can create the Froxlor database user and later manage customer databases. After setup, use the unprivileged Froxlor account for routine panel operation and keep the installation account protected.
If the database server is remote, confirm that its firewall allows connections from the VPS and that the account’s host restriction matches the connection source. A local database on the same VPS avoids an extra network dependency and is the simplest arrangement for a single-host installation.
Verify the installation before hosting sites
- Sign in through the dedicated FQDN and confirm the administrator password works.
- Check that the panel reports all required PHP extensions and that the PHP version is within 7.4–8.5.
- Confirm the selected web server is active and listening on the expected HTTP and HTTPS ports.
- Open the generated HTTPS virtual host and verify that the certificate matches the dedicated FQDN.
- Create a non-production test domain and confirm that its document root, PHP-FPM pool and database connection behave as expected.
- Review mail and FTP service settings before enabling public accounts; open only the ports you actually use.
- Take a VPS snapshot or external backup once the panel and its first configuration are working.
Do not add customer domains until the generated virtual-host and PHP-FPM configuration has been reviewed. A typo in the panel hostname, an unresolved DNS record or a blocked port is easier to fix before production sites depend on the server.
Keep an installation record
Record the operating-system release, repository path, chosen web server, database engine, panel FQDN and credential location. This small runbook makes later upgrades and recovery easier, especially when more than one administrator manages the VPS. Store the record privately and never include the generated passwords in a shared documentation page.

The repository has no Release file or cannot find Froxlor
Check the operating-system codename with lsb_release -sc, confirm that the Debian or Ubuntu path is correct, and compare the result with the supported-release table. Ubuntu 20.04 (focal) is deprecated in the current package guide, so a new installation should use a supported image instead.
Let’s Encrypt or HTTPS issuance fails
Verify that the dedicated FQDN resolves publicly to the VPS, that inbound HTTP and HTTPS are allowed by both the VPS firewall and the provider security group, and that no other service is answering for the hostname. Correct DNS first, then rerun the certificate step.
The installer reports missing PHP modules
Install the extension package corresponding to the PHP-FPM version selected for Froxlor, restart that FPM service and run the requirement check again. Installing an extension for a different PHP version does not satisfy the panel.
Multiple PHP versions do not appear
Ensure that each version has a working PHP-FPM or FCGID integration and that the domain is assigned to the correct pool. Do not switch to mod_php; Froxlor states that it cannot provide multi-version operation through that module and advises avoiding it for security reasons.

You lost the generated database or administrator password
The quick-start output does not show those credentials again. Check your password manager, terminal log or secure installation record. If no record exists, use the supported Froxlor recovery procedure for your installation rather than deleting databases or repeatedly rerunning the installer.
The hostname resolves to the wrong address
Inspect both A and AAAA records. An old AAAA record can send browsers to an unreachable IPv6 address even when the A record is correct. Remove or correct stale records, wait for DNS propagation, and then retry the certificate and virtual-host checks.

Both routes produce a supported Froxlor deployment when used on a supported Debian or Ubuntu base image. The choice is mainly between guided speed and explicit package control. The manual tarball route offers the most control over layout but also leaves more responsibility for web-server ownership, virtual-host configuration and database preparation.
Version drift to check before deployment
Froxlor’s distribution matrix, PHP and database ranges, repository key, installer flags and release numbers can change. The project’s get-started information currently lists stable release 2.3.15 (2026). Recheck the official compatibility and installation pages immediately before executing commands on a new VPS, especially when the operating-system image is newer than the versions listed here.
