On a Debian 12 (Bookworm) amd64 VPS, the reliable way to install the newest MySQL release exposed for Debian is to configure Oracle’s MySQL APT repository, select the release series you intend to operate, refresh APT metadata, install mysql-server, verify the systemd service, and run mysql_secure_installation. The Bookworm repository index checked on 19 August 2026 listed MySQL 9.7 LTS as its newest LTS entry, alongside 8.4 LTS, 8.0, Innovation, and MySQL tools.

What you need before installing

This procedure targets a 64-bit Debian 12 (Bookworm) server using systemd. Confirm the operating system and architecture before changing package sources:

cat /etc/os-release
uname -m

The release information should identify Debian GNU/Linux 12 (Bookworm), and the architecture should be x86_64 (the Debian amd64 build). You also need an account with sudo access and enough free disk space for the server, client, common database files, and your data.

Take a backup or snapshot before a production installation or an upgrade. Record the MySQL series you choose. Oracle’s repository keeps installations and upgrades on the selected major series, so documenting that choice prevents a later administrator from selecting an unintended branch.

Which MySQL series is “latest”?

“Latest” is not a permanent product label. It means the newest series currently published for your distribution by the repository you are using. The Debian Bookworm repository index observed on 19 August 2026 contained these entries:

Series Repository entry How to interpret it
9.7 mysql-9.7-lts The newest LTS entry visible in the checked Bookworm index.
8.4 mysql-8.4-lts An older LTS line that may be preferable when your application has been qualified on 8.4.
8.0 mysql-8.0 The 8.0 release line, retained for compatibility with software that has not moved to a newer series.
Innovation mysql-innovation A faster-moving series for environments prepared to adopt changes more frequently.
Tools mysql-tools Repository tooling rather than the database-server release line.

Check the repository’s current Bookworm index when you publish or perform the installation. If its contents have changed, treat the newest exposed series as the current “latest” and write down the date and selection. Do not select a lower series merely because it is familiar: Oracle states that in-place downgrading through the MySQL APT repository is unsupported.

Add Oracle’s MySQL APT repository

Oracle distributes MySQL for Debian as .deb packages through its APT repository. The repository configuration package adds the source and presents a menu in which you choose the Debian distribution and MySQL series.

  1. Obtain the repository configuration package

Download the current MySQL APT configuration .deb package from Oracle’s MySQL download area using a browser or transfer it to the VPS. Keep the file in a directory you can access with sudo. The exact filename changes as Oracle publishes new revisions.

  2. Install the configuration package

From the directory containing the downloaded file, run:

    sudo dpkg -i ./mysql-apt-config_*.deb

The wildcard lets the shell use the versioned filename you downloaded. If more than one configuration package is present, remove or move old copies first so that you install the intended revision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Select Debian Bookworm

When the configuration dialog opens, choose the Debian 12 (Bookworm) distribution. Do not select Debian 11, Debian testing, Ubuntu, or another distribution for a Bookworm VPS; repository metadata must match the operating system.

  4. Select the MySQL release series

Open the MySQL server-series entry and select the branch you plan to run. For the index checked on 19 August 2026, that means mysql-9.7-lts for the newest listed LTS. Choose mysql-8.4-lts, mysql-8.0, or mysql-innovation only when compatibility or release-policy requirements justify it. Leave the tools component enabled if you need Oracle’s packaged tools.

  5. Confirm and exit

Accept the configuration and allow the package to write the APT source information. The selected series is now the branch APT will use for the server package.

If you are configuring an existing MySQL installation, compare the selected branch with the installed branch before proceeding. Choosing a lower branch can create an unsupported downgrade attempt.

Refresh package metadata before installing

Oracle marks an APT metadata refresh as mandatory after repository configuration. Run:

sudo apt-get update

Read the output rather than ignoring warnings. A successful refresh should fetch metadata for Debian Bookworm and the MySQL series you selected. If APT reports a missing Release file, an unsupported distribution, or a signature problem, stop and correct the repository configuration before installing the server.

Install the MySQL server

Install the package with the documented command:

sudo apt-get install mysql-server

This package installs the MySQL server, client, and common database files. APT may ask you to confirm the additional packages and disk usage. On a new VPS, accept the prompt only after checking that the proposed packages come from the intended Bookworm and MySQL sources.

Package configuration can ask how the local root account should authenticate. If you leave the root password blank, Oracle documents socket peer-credential authentication for local Unix-socket access. That is different from allowing unauthenticated remote access; it means local access is tied to the operating-system account and socket credentials.

Verify that systemd started MySQL

Oracle documents that the server starts automatically after installation on systemd-enabled systems and is enabled for startup on reboot. Check its current state:

systemctl status mysql

Look for an active running service. The same unit can be controlled with:

sudo systemctl start mysql
sudo systemctl stop mysql
sudo systemctl restart mysql
systemctl status mysql

Use start when the service is stopped, restart after a configuration change that requires a reload through a full service restart, and status when diagnosing a failure. Do not repeatedly restart a service that is failing without reading the status output and the relevant system logs.

Run the initial hardening procedure

After the service is running, launch Oracle’s interactive hardening utility:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo mysql_secure_installation

The utility can set or revise root credentials and remove insecure default settings. Answer each prompt according to your deployment’s access model. If you intentionally kept socket peer-credential authentication, document that decision instead of assuming a blank password means the account is ready for password-based clients.

Run the utility again later if you need to revise root authentication or repeat the removal of insecure defaults. It is an administrative step, not a substitute for application-specific accounts and least-privilege grants.

Confirm the installed client and selected package state

The server package includes the client. Confirm that the client command is present and record the reported release:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

mysql --version

Store the output alongside the VPS change record, together with the date, Debian release, architecture, and selected APT series. The repository follows the major series chosen during setup; keeping this record makes later maintenance decisions auditable.

For a socket-authenticated root account, local Unix-socket access is performed using the operating-system credentials described by Oracle. If you instead configured a root password, use the password-based method you selected during package configuration and hardening. Do not assume that one authentication mode can be used with the other.

Troubleshoot common installation failures

“Unable to locate package mysql-server”

  • Run sudo apt-get update again and inspect whether the MySQL repository was actually contacted.
  • Reopen the APT configuration package and verify that Debian Bookworm, not another distribution, is selected.
  • Check that a MySQL server series is enabled. Selecting only the tools component does not provide the server package.
  • Confirm that the VPS architecture matches the repository packages. This procedure targets amd64.

Once the source is corrected, refresh metadata before retrying sudo apt-get install mysql-server.

The repository configuration dialog shows the wrong series

Exit without installing if the available choices do not match your compatibility requirement. The repository index can change over time. Record the available entries and choose a supported branch no lower than the one already installed on an existing server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service is not active after installation

Run systemctl status mysql and read the failure reason. A package installation that completed but left the service stopped should be investigated before application configuration continues. Use sudo systemctl start mysql only after correcting any reported configuration, storage, or dependency error.

Root login fails after installation

First determine whether the account uses socket peer-credential authentication or a password. A blank password during package configuration can result in socket authentication for local Unix-socket access. Run mysql_secure_installation if you need to set or revise credentials, then use the matching authentication method.

You selected a lower release by mistake

Do not attempt an in-place downgrade through the MySQL APT repository. Oracle explicitly documents that this operation is unsupported. Stop, take a verified backup, and plan a supported migration path rather than forcing APT to replace the installed series with a lower one.

Upgrade MySQL later without changing series accidentally

For an installation managed by Oracle’s repository, the documented upgrade flow is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm which MySQL major series is selected in the APT configuration and compare it with the version currently installed.
  2. Refresh repository metadata:
sudo apt-get update
  1. Install the server package again:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server

APT then applies available updates within the configured series. Oracle notes that the server restarts after an APT update, so schedule upgrades when a restart is acceptable and verify the service afterward with systemctl status mysql. Recheck the client version and your application before declaring the maintenance complete.

Changing from one major series to another is a release-selection decision, not an ordinary patch update. Review application compatibility, take a backup, and avoid selecting a branch lower than the installed one because repository-managed in-place downgrades are unsupported.

Installation choices compared

Decision Option Advantages Risks or limits
Package source Oracle MySQL APT repository Provides Oracle’s Debian packages and lets you select a MySQL major series such as 9.7 LTS, 8.4 LTS, 8.0, or Innovation when listed for Bookworm. You must maintain the repository configuration and keep the selected series documented. In-place downgrades are unsupported.
Package source Debian-native packages Uses Debian’s own archive and package-maintenance workflow. The exact MySQL series and release timing depend on the Debian archive; they are not established by the Oracle Bookworm index described here.
Release policy LTS series A suitable choice when you value a longer-lived, stable major line and predictable application qualification. Choosing an older LTS can mean deliberately not using the newest series exposed by the repository.
Release policy Innovation series Provides a faster-moving release path for teams prepared to evaluate changes frequently. Requires more active compatibility and upgrade planning than an LTS branch.
Server state Clean installation No existing MySQL data or series constrains the initial selection. You still need to choose the series carefully because later downgrading is unsupported.
Server state Upgrade Retains the existing installation while APT applies updates in the configured series. The service restarts during an APT update, and changing major series requires additional compatibility planning.
Root authentication Socket peer credentials Local Unix-socket access is tied to operating-system credentials rather than a stored root password. Password-based clients cannot be assumed to work; document the authentication mode and use the matching local access method.
Root authentication Configured password Provides password-based root authentication when that is required by your operating procedure. The credential must be protected and maintained; configure or revise it through the documented hardening utility.

Post-install checklist

  • Debian 12 (Bookworm) and amd64 were confirmed before repository setup.
  • The Oracle APT configuration package was installed and Bookworm was selected.
  • The intended MySQL series was recorded, including whether it was 9.7 LTS, 8.4 LTS, 8.0, or Innovation.
  • sudo apt-get update completed after repository configuration.
  • sudo apt-get install mysql-server installed the server, client, and common files.
  • systemctl status mysql shows the expected active state.
  • mysql_secure_installation was completed for the chosen root-authentication model.
  • The output of mysql --version, package state, date, and selected series were saved with the VPS change record.
  • Any future upgrade plan accounts for the automatic service restart and avoids unsupported in-place downgrades.

Bottom line

For Debian 12 Bookworm, configure Oracle’s MySQL APT repository first, select the newest series actually listed for Bookworm on the day you install, refresh APT, install mysql-server, verify systemd, and run mysql_secure_installation. On the 19 August 2026 index used for this guide, that newest listed LTS was MySQL 9.7; your installation record should preserve the date and series so later upgrades remain deliberate.
