MariaDB vs MySQL: Which Should You Run on Your VPS in 2026?

MariaDB remains a strong default for many new VPS web workloads, while MySQL is safer for MySQL-certified software, MySQL-specific JSON behavior and Oracle-backed operations. This guide explains compatibility, 2026 lifecycle changes, sizing, migration and testing.

For most new, conventional web applications on a self-managed VPS, choose a currently supported MariaDB LTS when you value broad MySQL protocol compatibility, useful features included in the community server, and low support overhead. Choose MySQL when your application vendor, team, drivers, or operations depend on MySQL-specific behavior, MySQL 8-era JSON semantics, Oracle-backed support, or exact MySQL compatibility. The projects still share clients and wire protocols, but they have diverged enough that a migration must be tested rather than assumed to be drop-in.

The short answer

Neither database is the universal performance winner. The right choice on a VPS is the one that matches your application’s SQL behavior, required features, support policy, and team experience.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Choose MariaDB when… Choose MySQL when…
Your application uses conventional SQL and a MySQL-compatible driver. A vendor explicitly certifies MySQL and does not certify MariaDB.
You want a MariaDB LTS or rolling release with its own feature roadmap. You require MySQL-specific behavior or exact MySQL compatibility.
You need MariaDB’s documented engine choices, such as ColumnStore, MyRocks, or S3. Your workload relies on MySQL 8-era JSON behavior or tooling.
Your team prefers a familiar MySQL-style stack with lower support and licensing overhead. Oracle support, ecosystem integration, or an existing MySQL operations standard is important.
You can test SQL modes, collations, authentication, replication, backups, and rollback before changing engines. Your provider images, monitoring, backup, and disaster-recovery procedures are already built around MySQL.

Pin a supported major branch, verify that your Linux distribution still receives security updates for it, and benchmark your own workload. Marketing claims about speed are not a substitute for measurements on the VPS you will actually run.

Compatibility in 2026: similar clients, different engines

What remains compatible

MariaDB retains high compatibility with MySQL’s network protocol, command-line clients, connectors, and many common SQL statements. MariaDB’s project overview says that “MariaDB Server still retains high levels of compatibility with MySQL, and most popular applications that use MySQL will work seamlessly with MariaDB.” That is why many PHP applications, content-management systems, and ordinary CRUD services can move between the two with little application-code change.

Compatibility is strongest when the application uses portable SQL, standard indexes, ordinary transactions, and a mature connector. A connection string that names a MySQL-compatible host and port will often work unchanged, but the fact that a client can connect does not prove that every query, migration, or replication task is safe.

Where the “drop-in replacement” idea breaks

MariaDB no longer describes itself as a drop-in replacement for every MySQL release. Its documentation explains that the engines have diverged, and Oracle’s migration guidance states that “MariaDB can no longer deliver drop-in compatibility.” Newer storage engines, optimizer behavior, data types, authentication defaults, reserved words, and JSON implementation details can all affect a supposedly simple switch.

Compatibility therefore has several layers:

  • Wire and driver compatibility: can the application establish a session through its current connector?
  • SQL compatibility: do statements, functions, operators, collations, and SQL modes produce the same result?
  • Data compatibility: can tables, indexes, generated columns, routines, events, and triggers be imported without alteration?
  • Operational compatibility: do backups, point-in-time recovery, replication, monitoring, and failover tools understand the target server?
  • Behavioral compatibility: do locking, isolation, query plans, error codes, and JSON comparisons behave as the application expects?

A successful login tests only the first layer.

Feature and workload fit

When MariaDB is the better fit

MariaDB positions its server for read-intensive and high-concurrency applications and offers storage-engine choices beyond the conventional InnoDB-style deployment. In the cited 10.5 comparison, MariaDB documents ColumnStore for distributed analytics, MyRocks for compression-oriented workloads, and an S3 storage engine. Those engines are meaningful only when your application is designed to use them; installing MariaDB does not automatically turn a transactional VPS into an analytics cluster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MariaDB is attractive when you want a MySQL-compatible application stack but prefer MariaDB’s release tracks and feature set. It can also reduce licensing and support complexity for teams that do not need a commercial support contract. Confirm that your framework, ORM, migration tool, and hosting image support the exact MariaDB branch you intend to deploy.

When MySQL is the safer fit

MySQL is the conservative choice when a software vendor, appliance, or managed service explicitly certifies MySQL and treats MariaDB as a different product. It is also safer when the application depends on MySQL 8-era JSON semantics, MySQL-specific optimizer behavior, authentication plugins, or a MySQL-only extension in an ORM or migration tool.

MySQL’s ecosystem and Oracle-backed support matter to organizations that already standardize on Oracle contracts, MySQL monitoring, backup, and replication procedures. Those benefits are operational rather than universal performance guarantees: they reduce integration risk for a MySQL-centered team but do not make MySQL faster for every VPS workload.

Feature checklist before you decide

  • List every JSON function, path operator, generated JSON column, and index used by the application.
  • Record required collations, character sets, SQL modes, time-zone tables, and reserved identifiers.
  • Check whether replication uses GTIDs, row or statement logging, or engine-specific filters.
  • Identify stored procedures, triggers, events, views, and generated columns that are created by migrations.
  • Verify authentication plugins and TLS settings against the connector versions your application supports.
  • Confirm that backup, restore, schema-diff, and monitoring tools name the target engine as supported.
  • Check whether the design depends on a particular storage engine, full-text implementation, or partitioning behavior.

Support and release policy in 2026

Lifecycle policy matters more than the product name. MariaDB publishes community, enterprise, and extended-LTS binaries, with a yearly LTS model alongside rolling releases. The project announced that MariaDB Server 10.6 reached end of life on July 6, 2026, and identified Server 12.3 as its latest LTS in that announcement. A 10.6 package that still installs from an old repository is not therefore a supported production choice.

MySQL changed its versioning approach in July 2026. The reference manual identifies MySQL 26.7.0 as the first valid calendar-versioned release and warns that behavior changes can affect SQL syntax, reserved words, query execution, and performance. A calendar number is not a promise that every upgrade is behavior-neutral; read the release notes and test queries before moving between supported branches.

Performance and sizing on a low-memory VPS

There is no defensible universal speed winner in the available evidence. Vendor pages make directional claims, but no independently controlled, same-version benchmark on identical VPS hardware establishes that MariaDB or MySQL is always faster. A database that wins on one query mix can lose on another because of indexes, cache size, connection behavior, storage latency, and replication settings.

What to measure instead of relying on brand claims

  • Representative latency: capture p50, p95, and p99 response times for the reads and writes your application actually issues.
  • Buffer-pool or cache hit rate: observe whether the working set fits in memory or causes repeated disk reads.
  • Connection count: measure active, idle, and peak connections; an oversized pool can exhaust a small VPS before CPU becomes the bottleneck.
  • Memory pressure: watch resident database memory, swap activity, page faults, and the application’s own footprint together.
  • Replication lag: if you use a replica, record lag during imports, reporting queries, and peak writes.
  • Backup duration and restore time: a fast backup that cannot be restored within your recovery target is not operationally fast.
  • Contention: distinguish database lock waits and I/O saturation from CPU limits imposed by the application or neighboring VPS workloads.

A practical low-memory layout

Reserve memory for the operating system, web server, application workers, and filesystem cache before assigning a database buffer pool. Keep connection limits realistic, use a connection pool in the application where appropriate, and avoid enabling optional engines or plugins you do not use. Put database data and binary logs on storage with predictable latency, and monitor swap rather than assuming that a small swap file fixes an undersized VPS.

Run the same schema, data volume, indexes, application build, and query trace against each candidate. Warm up caches before collecting results, repeat tests after a cold start, and record the exact server branch and configuration. Without those controls, a benchmark mostly measures setup differences.

Migration planning: switching safely in either direction

1. Inventory the source system

  1. Record the exact database version, distribution package, SQL modes, character sets, collations, time-zone tables, and authentication plugins.
  2. Export a schema-only definition and inspect generated columns, views, triggers, procedures, events, partitions, and engine declarations.
  3. Capture real production queries, slow-query samples, transaction boundaries, and connection-pool settings.
  4. Document replication topology, GTID assumptions, binary-log format, backup tooling, monitoring checks, and alert thresholds.
  5. List every application and job that connects to the server, including migration scripts and reporting tools.

2. Build a disposable staging VPS

Use the same operating-system family, storage class, CPU and memory profile, firewall rules, TLS policy, and application release planned for production. Install the target MariaDB or MySQL branch from a repository that still receives security updates. Do not test only an empty database: restore a recent production backup and include enough rows to exercise indexes, JSON fields, and the largest tables.

3. Test application behavior

  1. Run the application’s automated test suite and all schema migrations against the restored target.
  2. Replay representative reads, writes, background jobs, search queries, and report generation.
  3. Compare row counts, checksums for critical tables, null handling, ordering, date arithmetic, and JSON results.
  4. Exercise authentication, TLS, connection retries, transaction rollback, deadlock handling, and timeouts.
  5. Run backup and restore through the same tools used in production, then verify that the restored instance can serve traffic.

4. Choose a cutover method

For a small site, a maintenance window with a final logical backup may be sufficient. For a busy service, synchronize the target through a tested replication or change-capture process, stop writes briefly, apply the final changes, switch the application endpoint, and keep the source untouched until validation completes. The exact replication method must be supported by both chosen versions; do not assume that GTID or binary-log settings transfer unchanged across engines.

5. Keep rollback real

Define the condition that triggers rollback before cutover: data-integrity mismatch, unacceptable latency, failed background jobs, replication errors, or a security-control failure. Keep the old server available, preserve its backups and logs, and rehearse restoring service to it. A DNS change alone is not a rollback plan if clients cache the old address or if writes have diverged.

Deployment checklist for a new VPS

  1. Select a supported branch: confirm the database project’s lifecycle and your Linux distribution’s security-maintenance policy. Avoid MariaDB 10.6 after its July 6, 2026 end of life.
  2. Use a vetted image or repository: verify the image publisher, package signature, default bind address, and included server version before exposing a port.
  3. Restrict network access: bind the server to the private interface where possible, allow only application and administration networks through the firewall, and do not expose the database directly to the public internet.
  4. Create separate credentials: use a dedicated application account with only the required database privileges; reserve administrative accounts for maintenance.
  5. Set character and time-zone policy: choose the application’s intended character set, collation, and time-zone behavior before creating tables.
  6. Configure backups: schedule encrypted, off-host copies, retain multiple restore points, and test a full restore on a separate VPS.
  7. Enable observability: collect CPU, memory, disk latency, connections, lock waits, slow queries, replication status, and backup results.
  8. Document upgrades: pin package sources, record configuration changes, and test a major-version upgrade in staging before production.

After the database is stable, a managed VPS service can reduce patching and recovery work, but verify its exact database images, supported branches, backup retention, geography, and access controls before committing.

Common application scenarios

WordPress and typical PHP applications

Many WordPress and PHP deployments use a subset of SQL that works with either engine. That does not eliminate risk: plugins can create their own tables, assume a particular collation, issue engine-specific queries, or depend on a connector’s authentication behavior. Clone the site, restore its database, run plugin and theme workflows, publish a test post, execute search, comments, scheduled jobs, and media metadata operations, then inspect logs for SQL warnings before switching production.

Vendor-certified business software

If the vendor’s support matrix names MySQL but not MariaDB, treat that as a hard compatibility requirement unless the vendor gives written approval. Support contracts often depend on exact server versions, SQL modes, and backup procedures, so a technically successful installation may still be unsupported.

Analytics or compressed storage

MariaDB’s documented ColumnStore, MyRocks, and S3 options may fit specialized analytics or compression requirements, but they introduce different operational and query-planning considerations. Validate connector support, backup behavior, monitoring, and recovery procedures for the specific engine rather than evaluating MariaDB only as a generic transactional server.

JSON-heavy services

Applications that treat JSON as a primary data model should default to the engine whose functions, operators, indexes, and comparison semantics they were written and tested against. If that is MySQL 8-era behavior, moving to MariaDB requires explicit query and result-set tests; a successful schema import is not evidence of equivalent JSON semantics.

Troubleshooting after a switch

The application connects but queries fail

  • Compare SQL modes and reserved words between source and target.
  • Check collations and implicit conversions in joins, sorting, and unique indexes.
  • Search migrations for engine-specific functions, JSON operators, and generated-column expressions.
  • Confirm that the connector version supports the target authentication plugin and TLS settings.

Queries are slower despite identical indexes

  • Compare execution plans and statistics after analyzing the restored tables.
  • Check buffer-pool size, cache hit rate, disk latency, and concurrent connections.
  • Look for changed cardinality estimates, lock waits, temporary-table spills, or altered SQL modes.
  • Replay the same workload rather than timing one query from an interactive client.

Replication or backups fail

  • Verify binary-log format, GTID configuration, and feature support on both server branches.
  • Confirm that the backup utility recognizes the target engine and captures routines, events, users, and metadata.
  • Test a restore from the actual backup artifact; a completed backup job without a restore test is not proof of recoverability.

Decision framework for your VPS

  1. Start with certification: if a vendor or contractual support matrix requires MySQL, choose MySQL unless you obtain explicit approval for MariaDB.
  2. Check feature dependence: choose the engine whose JSON behavior, storage engines, replication, and authentication match your design.
  3. Check lifecycle: select a currently supported branch, not merely the default package in an old VPS image.
  4. Check operations: favor the platform your team can patch, monitor, back up, restore, and troubleshoot at 03:00.
  5. Measure on representative data: compare latency, memory pressure, connection capacity, replication lag, and recovery time on identical VPS resources.
  6. Rehearse migration and rollback: do not cut over until the target and the return path have both been tested.

For a new, conventional web workload with no MySQL-only dependency, a supported MariaDB LTS is the pragmatic default in 2026. For a MySQL-certified product, JSON-sensitive application, Oracle-supported environment, or team with mature MySQL tooling, MySQL is the lower-risk choice. In both cases, the durable decision is a pinned, supported version with measured behavior and a rehearsed recovery plan—not a claim that one brand is always faster.
