Check your WordPress, PHP and database versions first, and make a backup before changing a live store. The dashboard ZIP method is simpler; FTP/SFTP is the practical fallback for upload limits, permissions problems or hosting configurations that block the installer.

What a manual WooCommerce installation is
WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin, so manual installation means putting the plugin files into WordPress and then activating them. It does not mean buying or connecting a physical product. The software is distributed as a downloadable .zip file.
There are two supported ways to do this:
- Dashboard ZIP upload: upload the intact ZIP through the WordPress plugin installer.
- FTP/SFTP directory upload: extract the ZIP on your computer, upload the resulting plugin directory to the server, and activate it from WP-Admin.
WooCommerce documentation describes both routes. The first should be your default when you have administrator access and the upload control works. The second bypasses dashboard upload limits and is useful when your hosting configuration prevents WordPress from accepting the ZIP.

Check requirements before you install
Have the right access
For the dashboard route, you need a working WordPress site and an account that can install and activate plugins. For the server route, you also need FTP or SFTP credentials and permission to write to the site’s wp-content/plugins directory.
If you administer a managed WordPress site, your host may disable plugin installation or server-file access. In that case, an administrator or host must perform the installation; repeatedly retrying the upload will not bypass a policy restriction.
Download the official ZIP
Download WooCommerce as a plugin .zip from WooCommerce or WordPress.org. Keep the archive intact if you are using the dashboard upload method. If you are installing a WooCommerce Marketplace extension rather than the core plugin, download that extension’s ZIP from the account area where its subscription or download is provided.
Do not rename the archive to make it look like a theme, and do not upload a theme ZIP or an unrelated compressed file. The installer expects a WordPress plugin package.
Core plugin versus a Marketplace extension
The core WooCommerce plugin and a Marketplace extension are separate downloads. The core package comes from WooCommerce or WordPress.org. An extension is obtained from the account area associated with its subscription or purchase, then installed through the same ZIP upload process or the same server-directory process. Make sure you have selected the package intended for this particular site; installing an extension does not install the WooCommerce core plugin automatically.
Check PHP, WordPress and database compatibility
WooCommerce’s current requirements guidance recommends PHP 8.3 or later and states that WooCommerce works with PHP 7.4 or newer. It recommends MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.6 or newer. The exact minimum WordPress and PHP versions depend on the WooCommerce release, so check the published version matrix immediately before installation.

These are compatibility thresholds, not recommendations for a new production server. The recommended PHP version is 8.3 or greater, and the recommended database versions are MySQL 8.0 or greater or MariaDB 10.6 or greater. Compare the requirements with the versions actually running on your site rather than the versions installed on your personal computer.
When checking the database, identify whether the host uses MySQL or MariaDB and record its actual version. A site can meet the PHP requirement while still running an older database release. The version matrix is tied to each WooCommerce release, so do not assume that a package downloaded today has exactly the same minimums as an older package already stored on your computer.

Back up a live store and prefer staging for changes
Before installing or changing WooCommerce on a production site, make a restorable backup of the WordPress files and database. For a version change or a site that already handles orders, test the change on a staging copy first. WooCommerce’s update guidance treats backup and staging as prudent operational controls because plugin changes can affect the store’s code and data.
A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Confirm where the backup files are stored and which copy contains both the database and WordPress files. If a host supplies staging, use that copy to test the installation and activation before repeating the steps on the live domain.

This is the normal manual route. You upload the package yourself, but WordPress still handles unpacking and placing the files.
- Download the package. Obtain the official WooCommerce
.zipfile. Leave it as a ZIP; do not extract it for this method. - Sign in to WordPress. Open your site’s WP-Admin dashboard with an account allowed to install plugins.
- Open the plugin installer. Go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
- Choose the upload control. Select Upload Plugin. This opens the ZIP upload form.
- Select the archive. Click Choose File and select the WooCommerce ZIP you downloaded.
- Start installation. Click Install Now. WordPress uploads and extracts the package into the plugins directory.
- Activate WooCommerce. When WordPress reports that installation has completed, click Activate. If you leave the installer without activating, the files may be present but WooCommerce will not run.
- Complete initial configuration. On first activation, WooCommerce opens its Setup Wizard. Follow the prompts for the basic store configuration, then save the choices the wizard requests.
What a successful dashboard installation looks like
After activation, WooCommerce appears as an active plugin under Plugins > Installed Plugins, and the first activation takes you into the WooCommerce Setup Wizard. If the package installed but the activation link is no longer visible, open Plugins > Installed Plugins, find WooCommerce, and activate it there.
If the installer returns you to the plugin list without showing the wizard, check the plugin’s status first. A listed but inactive plugin needs activation; a listed and active plugin has completed the file installation step, and you can look for WooCommerce’s setup prompt in WP-Admin.
Why you should not extract the ZIP first for this method
The dashboard upload flow is designed to receive the ZIP and unpack it. Uploading an extracted folder through the ZIP form will not follow the documented workflow. Keep the archive intact until WordPress has accepted it.
Method B: Install by FTP or SFTP
Use this method when Upload Plugin is missing, the dashboard rejects a correctly downloaded archive, your host imposes a file-size limit, or a server policy prevents WordPress from writing the files. WooCommerce and WordPress documentation describe manually uploading the plugin directory to wp-content/plugins.
- Download the official ZIP. Start with the same WooCommerce package used for the dashboard method.
- Extract it locally. Unzip the archive on your computer. The extracted package should contain a plugin directory named
woocommerce. - Connect to the server. Open an FTP or SFTP client and sign in with the credentials supplied by your host. SFTP is generally the server-file connection referenced in WooCommerce’s guidance.
- Find the WordPress installation. Locate the site’s
wp-content/pluginsdirectory. The correct location is the plugins directory belonging to the WordPress installation you intend to use. - Upload the plugin directory. Transfer the extracted
woocommercedirectory itself intowp-content/plugins. The final path should be equivalent towp-content/plugins/woocommerce, with WooCommerce’s plugin files inside that directory. - Wait for the transfer to finish. Do not close the client while files are still transferring. A partial directory can appear on the server but fail during activation.
- Activate in WordPress. Sign in to WP-Admin and go to Plugins > Installed Plugins. Find WooCommerce and click Activate.
- Run the Setup Wizard. Complete the basic store configuration shown after first activation.
Avoid the nested-directory mistake
WordPress scans plugin directories directly under wp-content/plugins. If you upload a parent folder that contains another woocommerce folder, the effective path can become wp-content/plugins/woocommerce/woocommerce. When that happens, WooCommerce may not appear in the Plugins screen. Open the transferred folders and make sure the plugin’s main files are in the first woocommerce directory beneath plugins.

Do not upload the whole WooCommerce source repository
A source checkout is not the same thing as the distributable plugin ZIP. WooCommerce’s developer documentation says the plugin lives inside the repository’s plugins/ directory. If you are working from source, place or symlink the actual plugin directory correctly; do not copy the entire monorepo into wp-content/plugins and expect WordPress to discover it as one plugin.
Check the remote destination before and after copying
Hosts sometimes contain more than one WordPress installation, especially when several domains or staging sites share an account. Identify the installation whose dashboard you will use for activation, then locate that installation’s own wp-content/plugins directory. After the transfer, browse the remote directory and verify that the woocommerce folder is directly inside it. This simple check prevents a complete upload to the wrong site from being mistaken for an installation failure.

Finish the first activation
Use the Setup Wizard for the initial store configuration
Activation is the point at which WooCommerce becomes executable, not the end of store setup. The first activation opens the WooCommerce Setup Wizard. Follow its prompts for the basic store configuration appropriate to your site, and complete the requested steps before treating the installation as finished.
The wizard is separate from the file-transfer method. Whether you used the dashboard ZIP upload or FTP/SFTP, the activation and initial configuration happen in WP-Admin.
Confirm the plugin is active
- Open Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Locate WooCommerce and confirm that its status is active.
- If it is listed but inactive, click Activate and complete the wizard.
- If it is not listed, return to the server-path checks in the troubleshooting section rather than uploading another copy into a different directory.
What the manual installation costs
The installation procedure itself uses a downloadable software ZIP. There is no central physical Amazon product that substitutes for WooCommerce, and a computer accessory, book or unrelated tool does not answer the installation need. You need a working WordPress site, the appropriate WooCommerce package and either WP-Admin access or server credentials. If you use a Marketplace extension, its download comes from the account area associated with that extension.
Hosting is a separate operational choice. WooCommerce’s getting-started material directs store owners to hosting choices and recommended hosts, but the installation steps here do not require a particular host. If your provider blocks plugin installation or server-file access, contact the host or a site administrator rather than trying to bypass its policy.

“Upload Plugin” is missing or the upload fails
A missing upload control or a failed upload can result from administrator restrictions, server permissions, PHP or hosting upload limits, or a host configuration that disables plugin installation. Use the FTP/SFTP method instead if you have server access: extract the official ZIP, upload the woocommerce directory to wp-content/plugins, and activate it from the Plugins screen.
The ZIP is rejected
Redownload the official package and try again. Confirm that the file is a WooCommerce plugin ZIP, not a theme, a different extension, or an archive that was damaged during download. For dashboard installation, select the ZIP itself with Choose File; do not select an extracted folder.

The files are present but WooCommerce is not listed
Check the directory hierarchy on the server. The documented target is wp-content/plugins, with the WooCommerce plugin directory directly inside it. Correct a nested path such as plugins/woocommerce/woocommerce, and make sure you did not upload the archive’s outer container instead of the actual plugin directory.
Activation reports a compatibility problem
Compare the site’s WordPress and PHP versions with the WooCommerce release matrix, then check the database engine and version. WooCommerce recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, supports PHP 7.4 or newer, and recommends MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.6 or newer. A site running below a release’s stated minimum must be updated or matched with a compatible WooCommerce version before activation can be reliable.
A production version change feels risky
Stop and use the backup and staging safeguards rather than experimenting on the live store. Test the installation or version change on staging, verify the result, and keep a restorable backup before applying the same change to production.
The FTP/SFTP transfer did not complete
Review the client’s transfer queue and confirm that the complete woocommerce directory reached the server. Reconnect to the correct WordPress installation, check that the destination is its wp-content/plugins directory, and then look under Plugins > Installed Plugins. Uploading to a different WordPress installation on the same server will not make the plugin appear on the site you are viewing.
The wrong package was downloaded
Separate the core plugin from extensions and themes before retrying. A Marketplace extension ZIP belongs to the extension that supplied it; the core WooCommerce ZIP comes from WooCommerce or WordPress.org. If the archive is not intended to be a WordPress plugin package, do not force it through the WooCommerce installer.

Choose the dashboard ZIP upload when
- You have WordPress administrator access.
- Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin is available.
- The official ZIP is within your host’s upload limits.
- You want WordPress to extract and place the files for you.
Choose FTP/SFTP when
- The upload control is unavailable or blocked.
- The ZIP exceeds a dashboard or server upload limit.
- WordPress cannot write plugin files but your server account can.
- You need to replace a failed or incomplete dashboard transfer with a direct file upload.
The server route gives you more control but also gives you more opportunities to select the wrong WordPress directory or create a nested folder. For most administrators, the dashboard method is the safer first attempt; FTP/SFTP is the documented fallback when the dashboard cannot complete the job.

- WordPress is running and you have administrator access, or you have server access sufficient to write to
wp-content/plugins. - You downloaded the official WooCommerce ZIP and selected the correct package for your intended installation.
- Your PHP, WordPress and database versions meet the current WooCommerce requirements matrix.
- You made a backup and, for a live version change, prepared a staging test.
- For dashboard installation, you kept the ZIP intact.
- For FTP/SFTP installation, you extracted the ZIP and uploaded only the
woocommerceplugin directory directly underwp-content/plugins. - WooCommerce appears under Plugins > Installed Plugins and is active.
- You completed the Setup Wizard after first activation.
Once those checks are complete, WooCommerce has been manually installed through a supported WordPress workflow. If the dashboard route was blocked, the FTP/SFTP directory method achieves the same result without relying on the automatic plugin uploader.

Can I install WooCommerce without using the automatic installer?

Should I unzip WooCommerce before uploading it in WP-Admin?
No. Keep the official .zip intact for the dashboard upload route. WordPress extracts it after you click Install Now. Extract the package only when using the FTP/SFTP directory method.
Where exactly do I put the extracted WooCommerce folder?
