What you need before installing
Undead Legacy changes enough of the game that the server, clients, loader files, and save data must be treated as one versioned installation. Gather these items before touching the server:

- A dedicated 7 Days to Die server (Steam app 294420 is the separate dedicated-server tool documented by the 7D2D Wiki in 2026), or a control-panel/Docker host.
- The exact UL archive for the game branch you intend to run.
- Enough memory for the intended population. The 7D2D Wiki lists about 6 GB RAM for a small vanilla server and 10–16 GB for an overhaul or larger group; actual needs rise with map size, view distance, players, and other settings.
- Permission to stop the service, edit its XML configuration, replace files, and select the correct Steam branch.
- A backup of saves and configuration. Switching between stable and experimental UL lines can make a rollback necessary.
Allow room for the dedicated-server files, the complete UL archive, logs, backups, and at least one additional world copy. A modded server may also need more memory than a small vanilla instance, so size the machine for the group rather than the minimum launch requirement. If you rent a host, compare the memory allocation and backup policy, not only the advertised player slot count.
Do not start by copying files. First decide the branch and write down the exact game build, UL build, operating system, and launch method. Every player must reproduce that combination.

Choose and pin a compatible version
Stable versus experimental
UL downloads are tied to particular 7 Days to Die branches. The cited table recorded these pairings when it was checked:

These are not permanent requirements. Before installation, verify the current UL compatibility table and download page, then select the corresponding 7 Days to Die branch in Steam. A server that silently updates to the normal default branch can stop accepting clients even when the UL files have not changed.

Experimental can provide the newer UL line, but the benefit comes with more frequent compatibility checks and a greater chance that a second archive part or matching client update is required. Do not choose a branch simply because its number is higher.
Pin the dedicated server and clients
- In SteamCMD or the host panel, select the 7 Days to Die branch that the UL release specifies. Steam app ID
294420identifies the dedicated server tool. - Record the full build number shown by the server and by one clean client installation.
- Install the same UL line and build on every player’s PC. Do not mix an experimental client with a stable server, or vice versa.
- Turn off automatic branch changes until you deliberately upgrade all machines and test a backup copy of the world.
When using SteamCMD, install or update the dedicated-server tool first, then select the required branch rather than allowing the default branch to decide for you. With a control panel, look for an explicit branch or build selector; if the panel hides that choice, ask the provider which build it installs before uploading UL.
Version matching comes before firewall, port-forwarding, or gameplay troubleshooting. A connection failure caused by a branch mismatch cannot be fixed by opening more ports.
Back up the server and stop it
Stop the service before replacing or extracting files. Copy the complete save directory, the server configuration XML, and any launch scripts to a separate location. Keep the backup outside the directory that will receive the UL archive so an update or cleanup cannot overwrite both copies.

For a hosted service, download a copy rather than relying only on a provider’s internal snapshot.
Plan on a fresh world for the overhaul. UL’s total conversion can depend on its own item, block, progression, and world definitions; a vanilla save may fail to load correctly or may retain incompatible data. Preserve the old save rather than testing it in place. Create the new world only after the loader starts successfully.
Install the complete UL archive on Windows
Find the server root
The server root is the directory containing the dedicated-server executable and its normal configuration folders. Extract the archive directly into that directory. After extraction, the top level should contain the UL loader and mod folders beside the executable—not inside a newly created folder such as UndeadLegacyUndeadLegacy.
Before starting, open the directory and check the top level visually. If you see one folder containing all UL files, open it and move its contents up one level. This simple nesting mistake is one of the most common reasons a server starts without any mods.

Expected Windows layout
The Windows package documented by the UL installation guide contains these top-level entries:
BepInExModsdoorstop_config.iniwinhttp.dll
Keep all of them. UL is not a Mods-only upload: BepInEx provides the loader, Doorstop starts it, and the DLL/configuration files connect the loader to the game process. Uploading only Mods leaves the server looking vanilla.
Do not merge an older BepInEx directory into the new archive file by file. Replace the installation with the complete archive for the selected release, while retaining only configuration files you intentionally need. Mixing loader versions can produce misleading startup errors.
Disable EAC in the server configuration
Open the server’s XML configuration and set the EAC property to false:

Check the setting after every major update. A provider, launcher, or configuration reset can restore the default, leaving the files apparently correct while UL fails to initialize for clients.
Start with the supplied loader files
Use the normal Windows server executable together with the supplied UL/BepInEx files. Do not remove winhttp.dll or replace the loader configuration with a vanilla copy. On startup, the console should show BepInEx initialization before the game finishes loading; a completely vanilla console usually means the files are in the wrong directory or the loader DLL is missing.
Keep the first successful startup log. It gives you a baseline for later upgrades and makes it easier to distinguish a loader failure from a world or network problem.
Install the complete UL archive on Linux
Extract into the server root
Stop the service, then extract the Linux archive into the directory containing the dedicated-server executable. The documented Linux layout includes:

Make the supplied script executable if your file transfer method did not preserve permissions, and run that script for UL. A plain vanilla start script can bypass Doorstop and launch an unmodded server even though every UL file is present.

Use the same service account that owns the server files where possible. If one account extracts the archive and another runs the service, verify that the service can read the loader files and write its logs and save directory.
Apply the Mono library mapping when required
The cited Linux guide notes that some installations need this mapping in the Mono configuration:
<dllmap dll="dl" target="libdl.so.2"/>Add it only to the appropriate Mono configuration file for that installation, preserving the surrounding XML. If the server fails before BepInEx loads, check the path, permissions, library availability, and this mapping before changing gameplay settings.
Launch and verify
Run run_bepinex_server.sh from the server root. Watch for BepInEx startup messages and UL assemblies being loaded. If the script exits immediately, inspect its permissions and the first error in the terminal; do not switch back to the vanilla script as a workaround, because that masks the loader problem.
For an automated service, point the service definition at the UL script, not at a separate vanilla command retained from the original server setup. Test a manual launch once so you can see the complete error output before putting the process back under a supervisor.
Install UL on every client PC
Each player needs the same UL line and exact build as the server. Install the client archive into that player’s 7 Days to Die game directory using the layout and files supplied for the selected release. The client must also run with EAC disabled. Use the game’s launcher or launch configuration to disable EAC before joining; enabling EAC on even one client prevents UL from running correctly.
Have players close the game before replacing files, keep a copy of their original game directory or use Steam’s file verification to return to vanilla later, and avoid letting Steam update the client to a different branch after UL is installed. A client that reaches the server list but is rejected at connection time is often on the wrong game build or UL build rather than suffering a network fault.
Give the group a short installation checklist containing the selected game branch, UL line, exact build, EAC state, and server address. Asking everyone to install “the latest UL” is unsafe because latest can differ between stable and experimental channels.
Players who switch between vanilla and UL should keep separate installation copies or be prepared to restore the vanilla files before launching an unmodded game. Running file verification can remove mod files, so use it deliberately and reinstall the complete UL archive afterward.
Create a new UL world
- Confirm the server starts with BepInEx and UL messages visible.
- Stop it and confirm the save backup is complete.
- Remove only the new-world target you intend to replace; keep the backup and any existing vanilla saves elsewhere.
- Start the server and generate a fresh world using the UL installation.
- Join with one fully matched client before inviting the rest of the group.
Do not assume that a vanilla save can be upgraded safely. If you must test one, make a separate copy and treat any successful load as experimental rather than proof that future updates will remain compatible.

Have one player test spawning, inventory access, the interface, and movement before the rest of the group joins. Frozen movement, a vanilla interface, or missing UL items at this stage indicates an incomplete installation, not a world-generation setting to ignore.
Check networking after the loader works
Networking should be tested only after branch, loader, and EAC settings match. The 2026 7D2D Wiki guide lists these default ports:

Dashboard or Telnet ports may also be configured. Confirm the current game’s defaults before exposing ports, especially if your host panel changes them. Forward the selected ports to the server’s private address, allow them through the operating-system firewall, and use the same values in the server configuration and connection instructions. Do not expose an administration port publicly unless you have secured it.
Test locally first, then from a second network. If local clients work but remote players do not, investigate forwarding, firewall rules, and the public address only after the version and EAC checks have passed.

Control-panel installation
Managed hosts can remove file-transfer and service-management work, but they still require version discipline. Host Havoc’s documented sequence is representative: stop the service, open the panel’s Non-Workshop Mods installer, select Undead Legacy, disable EAC, install the chosen release, and restart. Confirm the provider offers the exact UL/game branch you need; a one-click button that installs a different build is not compatible merely because it has the same mod name.
Ask about RAM allocation, automated backups, branch selection, restore access, and whether support can pin a specific UL release. Hosting has an ongoing monetary cost but can reduce administration time; verify current commercial terms directly because plans and supported builds change.
Docker
Docker-7DaysToDie exposes environment settings for UL, including UNDEAD_LEGACY=YES and UNDEAD_LEGACY_VERSION=EXP or STABLE, plus update controls. Persistent mounts are essential: Didstopia’s Docker server documentation separates server files from save and configuration data so a container replacement does not erase the world. Back up before changing the UL line; the Docker documentation specifically warns that switching stable and experimental requires a backup.
Keep the save and configuration mounts outside the disposable container layer. Record the image version, environment values, and mounted paths with each backup so a rebuild restores the same branch rather than silently selecting a new one.

There is no useful physical accessory to buy for this installation. The relevant spending choices are server hardware or hosting, storage, and administrative time. A free self-managed server can still cost more in maintenance time than a managed plan for a group that wants one-click restarts and backups.

The server starts as vanilla
- Check that
BepInEx,Mods, and the loader files are directly beside the server executable. - Confirm you extracted the complete archive, not just
Mods. - On Linux, run
run_bepinex_server.sh; on Windows, retain the supplied DLL and configuration files. - Read the startup log for BepInEx initialization. No loader messages indicate a path or launch problem, not a gameplay configuration issue.
“Subquake_Items.ulm” is missing, movement is frozen, or the interface is vanilla
The UL guide attributes this combination to a missing second part of the experimental archive. Download every required archive part for that release and copy each part into the server root, then repeat the same complete installation on clients. Do not mix files from a different UL line.

Players cannot connect
- Compare the exact 7 Days to Die branch and build on server and client.
- Compare the UL line and build, including whether each is stable or experimental.
- Confirm EAC is false in the server XML and disabled in every client launch.
- Only after those checks, test firewall rules, port forwarding, and the server address.
Files are one directory too deep
Move the contents of the extracted folder up one level so BepInEx, Mods, doorstop_config.ini, and the platform-specific loader files sit directly in the server root. Restart with the correct script and inspect the log again.
You want to switch stable and experimental
Stop the server, make a dated backup of saves and configuration, and record the current build. Change the game branch and UL line together, install the matching archive on every client, and test a copied world first. Docker-7DaysToDie explicitly warns about backing up before this transition; the same precaution applies to manual installations.

Check the first error rather than the final shutdown message. On Linux, verify script permissions, the server-root path, required libraries, and the Mono mapping when applicable. On either platform, confirm the archive is complete and that an old loader directory was not merged with the new one. Restore the last working backup if the failure began immediately after a branch change.
Maintenance checklist
- Before every update, copy saves, configuration, and the current UL archive or release notes.
- Update the dedicated server and all clients as one change, never one machine at a time during an active session.
- Keep stable and experimental files in separate backup directories so they cannot be accidentally combined.
- After an update, verify BepInEx startup, UL loading, EAC state, and a test connection before opening the server to the group.
- Retain the previous working build until the new world and client connections have been tested.
- Review memory use as the player count, map size, or overhaul settings grow; the 10–16 GB guideline is for an overhaul or larger group, not a promise for every configuration.
The reliable installation pattern is therefore consistent: select a documented pairing, pin it, copy every loader component to the server root, disable EAC on both sides, launch through the UL loader, and use a backed-up fresh world. If any one of those conditions is missing, fix it before investigating less likely causes.

A panel can simplify stopping the service, installing the mod, and restarting, while manual hosting provides more control. Confirm the provider’s exact UL/game build, RAM allocation, backup policy, and current terms.
