What a separate managed database means for WordPress
WordPress still needs a MySQL or MariaDB server to store posts, users, settings, comments, plugin data, and other site records. The database does not have to run on the same machine as the WordPress files. A managed design places PHP, the web server, and the WordPress directory on one host while a cloud provider operates the database instance elsewhere.

This arrangement is suitable for production when the managed endpoint is reachable from the web host and the supplied credentials are valid. The browser installer, WordPress updates, plugins, and themes continue to use the same database connection; only the location of that server changes.
WordPress production support is for MySQL or MariaDB. A service advertised as “MySQL-compatible” still needs to provide a version and behavior that WordPress supports. The WordPress FAQ states that MySQL or MariaDB database servers are required to power a WordPress site.

Version and transport requirements
WordPress’s current requirements guidance, retrieved in 2026, recommends the versions below. Older releases may continue to run, but they are out of support and can expose a site to security vulnerabilities.

The WordPress Hosting Handbook lists MySQL 8.4 as an LTS release with an April 2032 end-of-life date and MariaDB 11.8 as an LTS release with a June 2030 end-of-life date. Those lifecycle dates are handbook listings, not a promise that every host offers those exact branches. Confirm the available version, upgrade policy, and end-of-life date in the service you select.

Plan the connection before creating anything
Keep the application and database close
Run PHP and the WordPress files on the web host, and create the managed database in the same region or private network where practical. Every request that reads or writes WordPress data crosses this connection, so unnecessary geographic distance adds latency and makes a network outage affect the site.
Choose private or public access deliberately
A private endpoint, virtual network, or equivalent private route is preferable when your hosting arrangement supports it. A public endpoint can work, but the managed service must restrict access to the web host’s approved source address and database port. Do not treat a hostname and password as a substitute for network controls.
Record the connection details
Before editing WordPress, collect the exact database name, database username, password, hostname, port, and any TLS requirements. Record whether the provider gives a read/write endpoint, a private DNS name, or a failover endpoint. A copied value with an extra space, wrong port, or wrong endpoint can produce the same generic connection error as a firewall problem.

Create the managed database and WordPress account
- Provision a MySQL or MariaDB instance. Select a supported engine version, region, storage size, availability option, and maintenance policy. Wait until the provider reports that the instance is running.
- Create a database dedicated to this site. A separate database keeps the site’s tables and lifecycle easier to identify and restore. Follow the provider’s naming and character rules.
- Create a dedicated database user. Do not reuse a personal administrator account or an account shared by unrelated applications.
- Grant the permissions WordPress needs. The account must be able to complete the initial schema installation and the normal schema changes required by WordPress core, plugins, and themes. Apply the least privilege that fits your update and maintenance process, using the managed service’s role controls.
- Save the exact values. Copy the database name, username, generated password, hostname, port, and TLS instructions into a secure password manager or deployment secret store. Do not place them in a public repository or support ticket.
Managed services often expose separate administrative and application credentials. Use the application account in WordPress and keep the high-privilege administrative account for controlled database administration.
Allow the web host to reach the database
Network access is part of the installation, not an optional hardening step. Configure the managed service firewall, private endpoint, virtual network route, security group, or approved source-address rule so the web host can reach the database listener. Permit only the required source and port.
Azure’s WordPress guidance describes Flexible Server integrated into a virtual network, illustrating why routing and access controls must be planned together. The same principle applies to other providers: a database can be healthy and the password can be correct while the application still cannot connect because DNS, routing, or an access rule blocks the path.
Check the path in this order
- Resolve the managed hostname from the web host. Private endpoints may require the provider’s private DNS configuration.
- Confirm that the hostname resolves to the intended region or private address, not an old instance.
- Verify that the outbound database port is allowed by the web host’s network policy.
- Verify that the managed service allows the web host’s source address, subnet, virtual network, or security group.
- Confirm that the instance is running and accepting connections.
If the provider requires encrypted database traffic, follow its TLS setup and certificate-validation instructions before running the WordPress installer. HTTPS for visitors protects browser traffic; it does not automatically configure encryption between WordPress and the database.
Configure wp-config.php
Download the WordPress package and copy wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php, or let the browser installer create the file. Replace the database placeholders with the values from the managed service:

DB_HOST is the database hostname, not the WordPress site URL, an HTTP URL, or an IP address copied from an unrelated service. If the provider supplies a non-default port, append it to the hostname. WordPress documents the format with an example such as mysql.example.com:3307.

Protect the configuration
- Keep
wp-config.phpreadable by the PHP process but not downloadable as a static file. - Use a unique, long database password and rotate it through a planned maintenance procedure.
- Keep production credentials out of source control, screenshots, and copied support logs.
- If you change the password or endpoint later, update the managed service and
wp-config.phpas one coordinated change.
Upload WordPress and run the installer
- Place the files. Upload the WordPress files to the desired document root or subdirectory and preserve their filenames and directory structure.
- Check the configuration. Confirm that
DB_NAME,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD, andDB_HOSTexactly match the managed service. Include the provider’s port when it is not the default. - Open the site URL. Visit the document-root URL in a browser. If the database connection succeeds and the files are readable, WordPress displays its installation form.
- Complete the form. Enter the site title, administrator username, administrator password, and administrator email address. Use a unique administrator password that is not reused for the database account.
- Finish installation. WordPress creates its tables in the managed database and redirects you to the login screen when setup completes.
If the installer reports that it cannot establish a database connection, stop changing WordPress files and troubleshoot the connection path first. Repeatedly rerunning the installer will not fix a blocked port, wrong endpoint, or invalid account.
Verify the finished installation
After logging in, perform a short acceptance check before installing plugins or importing content:

- Open the front page and an administrator screen over HTTPS.
- Create a temporary draft, save it, and confirm that it remains after a refresh.
- Upload a small media file and verify that the request completes without a database error.
- Check the managed service’s connection, CPU, storage, and error metrics while loading the site.
- Confirm that the database account used by WordPress has the intended privileges and is not an unrestricted administrative login.
- Make a backup and document how to restore it before the site receives important content.
How to compare managed database providers
The WordPress Hosting Handbook lists the following services as known to perform well with WordPress. It also notes that WordPress does not regularly test every listed service, so the list is not a ranking or a guarantee for a particular plan.

Microsoft describes Azure Database for MySQL as a fully managed database-as-a-service offering and publishes a WordPress deployment example. Treat that documentation as an implementation example, not as a universal ranking of providers.
Use these decision criteria
- Compatibility and lifecycle: Choose a maintained MySQL or MariaDB version that meets WordPress’s requirements and your plugin support matrix.
- Network topology: Prefer private connectivity where practical; otherwise require strict firewall rules and a documented source address.
- Backups and recovery: Check automated backup retention, point-in-time recovery, export options, and whether you can rehearse a restore.
- Region and latency: Place the database near the web host and your principal users when the architecture permits.
- Scaling: Compare storage growth, compute changes, connection limits, read or write options, and high-availability behavior.
- Cost and responsibility: Compare the provider’s billing model and identify which tasks remain yours, including WordPress updates, credential rotation, testing, and restore validation. The official material cited here does not establish current prices.
Troubleshoot connection failures systematically
WordPress’s handbook recommends checking database information, user permissions, and server availability. Work through the following sequence so each test eliminates a different class of failure.
1. The hostname or port is wrong
Compare DB_HOST character by character with the provider’s current endpoint. If the service specifies a port, use hostname:port. Remove accidental spaces, a URL scheme, or a path. If the provider recently failed over the instance, verify that you are using its current endpoint rather than an old node address.
2. DNS or routing cannot reach the endpoint
Resolve the hostname from the web host, then inspect private DNS, virtual-network routes, and outbound firewall policy. A private endpoint that resolves only inside the provider network will not work from a web host on an unrelated network until routing and DNS are connected.
3. A firewall or security group blocks the request
Check both sides: the managed service must allow the web host’s source address or network, and the web host must permit outbound traffic to the database port. Temporarily broadening access can help isolate a rule problem, but restore a narrow allow-list immediately after the test.

4. The credentials or database name are invalid
Re-enter the exact database name, username, and password from the managed service. Watch for copied whitespace and case differences. Confirm that the account belongs to the intended instance and that the database actually exists there.
5. The account lacks required privileges
A connection can authenticate while installation fails when the account cannot create or alter the WordPress schema. Review the account’s grants in the managed service and provide the permissions required for installation and routine WordPress updates.

6. TLS settings do not match
If the service requires encrypted connections, confirm that WordPress’s database client path follows the provider’s TLS requirements and trusts the required certificate authority. A successful DNS lookup does not prove that the encrypted handshake will succeed.
7. The managed instance is stopped or unhealthy
Check the provider status page and the instance dashboard for stopped, restarting, maintenance, storage, or connection-limit conditions. Wait for a running state before changing application configuration.
Operate the two-part installation safely
Backups are still your responsibility
A managed provider may automate backups, but you still need to know the retention period, recovery-point objectives, export method, and restoration procedure. Test a restore into an isolated instance and verify that WordPress can connect to the restored database before relying on the backup in an emergency.
Plan upgrades as a compatibility change
Database engine upgrades, PHP upgrades, and WordPress updates can affect one another. Confirm that the target MySQL or MariaDB version is supported by the WordPress release and by your plugins and themes. Schedule maintenance, take a recoverable backup, and monitor the application after the change.
Watch connections and latency
Separate hosting introduces a network hop and a provider connection limit. Monitor connection counts, query or request latency, storage growth, and error rates. If the site outgrows its initial tier, evaluate the provider’s documented scaling and high-availability options instead of changing DB_HOST ad hoc.
Document recovery details
Keep an access-controlled record of the endpoint, port, database name, account owner, TLS requirements, firewall source, backup location, and restore steps. When staff or infrastructure changes, this record prevents a working site from becoming unmaintainable because no one knows which network rule or endpoint it uses.
