To install New Vegas Script Extender (xNVSE), download a release from the official project page, extract it, and copy its included DLL and EXE files into the Fallout: New Vegas folder beside FalloutNV.exe—not into Data. Then launch with nvse_loader.exe, except when using the FNV 4GB Patcher, which calls for launching FalloutNV.exe.
What xNVSE does
xNVSE expands Fallout: New Vegas’s engine and scripting capabilities. It is a resource that other mods can use, not a standalone game or a gameplay mod. The project describes its purpose in the official xNVSE README.

Check your game edition first
The project README lists Steam and GOG versions as compatible. It lists German No Gore, Xbox Game Pass, and Bethesda.net versions as unsupported. Epic Games Store users are directed to the Epic Games Patcher rather than the standard installation route below.

Install xNVSE
- Download a release asset. Open the official xNVSE releases page and download the archive attached to a release. Do not use GitHub’s “Code” source ZIP as the installer. The releases page showed xNVSE 6.4.9 as its latest release on October 8, 2026; the page may have changed since then.
- Extract the archive. The release notes describe downloading the
.7zasset and moving the extracted files into the game’s base folder. - Find the game’s root folder. On Steam, it is usually
SteamsteamappscommonFallout New Vegas. Confirm the correct folder by looking for bothFalloutNV.exeandFalloutNVLauncher.exe. - Copy the xNVSE files beside the game executables. Copy the included
.dlland.exefiles into that root folder. Do not put them inData, and do not install xNVSE through Mod Organizer 2 as if it were a regular mod. - Launch the game using the appropriate route. Use
nvse_loader.exefor a standard installation. If you have applied FNV 4GB Patcher, launchFalloutNV.exeinstead. The README also notes that the Steam Community option allows launching through Steam’s standard UI.

If xNVSE does not start correctly
- Check the destination. Make sure the files are beside
FalloutNV.exe, not inData. - Check the download. Confirm you used a release asset, not GitHub’s “Code” source ZIP.
- Isolate mod conflicts. If the game crashes, disable other mods and see whether the crash persists. If it does, the project recommends submitting a GitHub issue with a log generated by a Crash Logger; see the xNVSE README.
- Check antivirus quarantine carefully. Release notes warn that antivirus software may remove
nvse_loader.exeornvse_steam_loader.dll. Before restoring or allowing a file, verify that it came from the official release and review your security software’s detection details; do not disable protection indiscriminately.
The project says xNVSE does not modify the game executable on disk and therefore has no permanent side effects.
