Choose an invitation method
| Method | Best for | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Share link | Inviting someone who is not on your friends list | Anyone who has the link. Minecraft advises against posting it publicly on message boards or social profiles. Minecraft’s share-link instructions |
| Gamertag | Inviting a particular account | The named player you invite through your Friends list. Minecraft’s gamertag instructions |
Invite with a share link
- Launch Minecraft: Java Edition and select Play.
- Select Edit beside the Realm you want to open.
- Open Members, then select Share Link.
- Copy the link or share it through an app, and send it directly to the player.
The link grants access to anyone who holds it. Keep it out of public posts; if you are unsure who can access a link that has circulated, manage access through the Realm’s Members settings.

Invite by gamertag
- In Minecraft, select Play → Edit beside the Realm → Members.
- If the player is not already your friend, select Find Friends, enter their gamertag, press Enter, and select Add Friend.
- In the Friends list, select Invite beside that player’s gamertag.
How the invited player joins
After accepting the invitation, the player launches Minecraft: Java Edition, selects Minecraft Realms, chooses the available Realm, and selects Play. The invited player does not need to buy a Realms subscription to join; the host’s Realms service is the paid hosting option. See Minecraft’s Java Realm joining instructions.
Java invite codes: snapshot feature, not confirmed general availability
Minecraft’s September 2, 2026 announcement described invite codes in a Java snapshot, not as a generally released feature. In that snapshot, a Realm owner could manage up to five codes at a time, set an expiration date when creating one, or delete a code. A player could enter a code on the Join Realm screen to be added as a member; deleting the code would not remove members who had already joined through it. Minecraft Staff said the features were still being developed and might change. Check the current game version before relying on invite codes: Minecraft’s snapshot announcement.
