Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, though they cannot attach to the new console. Older docks, power accessories and memory cards have important limitations, too. Check a game’s current Nintendo eShop or product listing before buying or relying on it.
Can you play Nintendo Switch games on Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital games released for Nintendo Switch. Some games may not be supported or may have compatibility limitations. Nintendo also offers free updates and paid upgrade packs for selected titles that add content or improve performance on Switch 2; those are title-specific rather than a requirement for every game. Nintendo’s overview of Switch game compatibility explains the baseline.

Nintendo’s consolidated game compatibility list says its status information was current as of June 5, 2025. Nintendo directs players to each game’s product page or eShop listing for the latest status. The company says its checks involve starting games and conducting limited testing, and that compatibility status may change if issues are found. Treat the dated list as guidance, not a guarantee that every game or feature has been exhaustively tested.

Examples of documented exceptions
Nintendo’s list identifies Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unavailable because the Switch 2 console cannot fit inside the Toy-Con VR Goggles. It also names the apps Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll and InkyPen as unavailable. The page links separate lists for games with issues that can block progress, including startup problems, and for issues resolved or expected to be resolved through updates. Because that page is dated, check the current listing for any game you plan to play.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Some titles start and play but need an original Joy-Con for a particular feature. The examples below are Nintendo’s named exceptions, not proof that every other title has been individually tested without issue:
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 do not attach to the Ring-Con or fit the leg strap; use original Joy-Con for those accessories.
- 1-2-Switch: Games that use the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
- Game Builder Garage: IR Motion Camera Nodon and IR-Light Nodon use requires an original right Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 do not fit the leg strap, and Soccer Shoot-Out requires original Joy-Con. Nintendo says the leg strap can be used with Switch 2 when original Joy-Con are connected wirelessly.
- WarioWare: Move It!: Microgames using the IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
- Everybody 1-2-Switch!: Joy-Con 2 force feedback vibration is reduced compared with original Joy-Con, which may make the hidden-controller minigame harder.
- Nintendo Labo kits: Physical fit depends on the Toy-Con. Nintendo describes the experience as different from the original for Toy-Con 01 and 03, while Toy-Con 02 can be played with original Joy-Con.
For a third-party-published game, Nintendo advises contacting the publisher for specific compatibility information. Its compatibility support page provides more detail on game and accessory limitations.
Which original Switch accessories work with Switch 2?
“Works” can mean several things: wireless pairing, physical fit, game-feature support, charging, or docked use. Check the relevant column before keeping an accessory as your only option.

| Original Switch item | Switch 2 compatibility | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con | Pairs wirelessly; does not attach | Charge using an original Switch console or a compatible original Joy-Con charging accessory. Some games or legacy accessories require these controllers. |
| Switch Pro Controller | Pairs wirelessly | Nintendo says it can charge through a USB connection on the Switch 2 dock. |
| NES, SNES, N64 and SEGA Genesis controllers | Pair wirelessly for compatible games | Game support is required; charging details vary by controller. |
| Original Switch dock | Not compatible | Use a Switch 2 dock for TV mode. |
| Original Switch AC adapter | Limited | Can charge Switch 2 when connected directly for handheld or tabletop use, but cannot power it while docked. |
| HDMI cable supplied with original Switch | Not compatible | Nintendo says the cable standards differ and recommends using the cable supplied with Switch 2. |
| Conventional microSD card | Not for Switch 2 game storage | Can display screenshots and videos captured on Switch, but cannot save or load Switch 2 digital games or save data. |
| microSD Express card | Compatible for expanded storage | Switch 2 requires this format for game storage expansion; Nintendo states support for cards up to 2 TB. An internet system update is required the first time you use one. |
| Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter | Compatible in TV mode | Connect it to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock. |
| Joy-Con Strap, Grip, Charging Grip, Wheel, Leg Strap, Ring-Con, AA Battery Pack and two-way charging stand | Not compatible with Joy-Con 2 | Some can still be used with original Joy-Con and compatible games; Ring-Con and Leg Strap have specific game uses. |
Nintendo’s accessory compatibility guidance covers the listed items. For the microSD distinction, see its microSD and microSD Express support article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will your old Switch SD card work on Switch 2?
A conventional microSD card from Switch is not usable for storing or loading Switch 2 digital games or save data. It can still be inserted to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch. To expand Switch 2 game storage, use a microSD Express card; Nintendo states that Switch 2 supports capacities up to 2 TB and requires an internet system update the first time the card is used.
A microSD Express card can also be used with an original Switch, but that console reads and writes it at ordinary microSD speeds. The card’s faster format does not make the original console operate at microSD Express speeds.

Can you use an old Switch dock, charger or HDMI cable?
The original Switch dock and the HDMI cable bundled with that console are not compatible with Switch 2. Use the Switch 2 dock and its supplied HDMI cable for TV mode.
The original Switch AC adapter has a narrower use: connect it directly to Switch 2 to charge the console in handheld or tabletop use. It cannot provide power to Switch 2 while the console is docked. Nintendo says the Switch 2 AC adapter can be used with either console generation, but the original adapter cannot power the Switch 2 dock. Nintendo’s console and accessory differences guide explains the hardware distinctions.
How to identify which controller or accessory you have
Original Joy-Con attach to the original Switch using rails. Joy-Con 2 connect to Switch 2 magnetically. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but Joy-Con 2 cannot pair wirelessly with an original Switch. A grip or charging grip works with its corresponding controller generation, not both.
The consoles and docks carry their respective logos; Nintendo describes the original dock as squared and the Switch 2 dock as having rounder edges. The Switch 2 AC adapter consists of a separate wall plug and USB-C cable, while the original Switch adapter is a single unit. If uncertain, use the product labeling and Nintendo’s hardware comparison guide before connecting or purchasing replacement gear.
