To join a Counter-Strike 2 community server directly, use its complete address in IP:PORT format. You can paste that address into the developer console with connect IP:PORT, or add it through CS2’s Community Server Browser or Steam’s Game Servers window. The port is part of the address; an IP address without the port is incomplete.

What you need before connecting
Ask the server operator or copy the address from the server listing. It should look like 144.48.106.196:27035: a numeric IP address, a colon, and a port number. Copy every character. Do not remove the colon, replace the port with a guess, or assume that the server uses a standard port.

IP:PORTvalue supplied by the operator or listing. - CS2 installed and updated: the client and server must be compatible enough to complete the connection.
- Password, if required: private servers will request credentials from the operator.
- Steam running: this is required for Steam’s Game Servers window and for
steam://connectlinks.
There are two practical workflows. The console is fastest when you already have the address. The browser is easier when you want to save the server, refresh its listing, or select it from Favorites on later visits.
Method 1: Join with the CS2 developer console
The console method sends the connection command directly to CS2. It avoids searching through a server list, but the developer console must be enabled first.

Enable the developer console
- Launch CS2 and open Settings.
- Choose the Game section.
- Find Enable Developer Console and set it to Yes if it is disabled.
- Close the settings screen. Press the key assigned to the console; on many keyboard layouts this is the
~key. The physical key can differ by layout or by your own key binding.
If nothing opens, return to the Game settings and verify the setting, then try the key that produces a tilde or backtick on your keyboard. A keyboard-layout mismatch can make the console appear unavailable even when it is enabled.
Enter the address
- Copy the server’s full address, including its port.
- Open the console and type
connect IP:PORT. - Replace the placeholder with the supplied values. For example, type
connect 144.48.106.196:27035. - Press Enter. CS2 will attempt to leave the current session and connect to that server.
Do not add spaces around the colon. The command is one line, with connect followed by one complete address. If the server owner supplied a hostname rather than numbers, use the complete host-and-port value exactly as provided and retain the same command structure.

Private servers require a password supplied by their operator. You can enter the connection first and type the password when CS2 prompts you. Some server documentation also uses a combined console command:
connect <IP:Port>; password <password>
Replace both bracketed values with the real address and password. The semicolon separates the connection command from the password command. A password that has expired or been changed by the operator will still produce a failed connection, so obtain the current credential rather than repeatedly retrying an old one.

When the console route is the best choice
- You have a verified address and want the fewest clicks.
- You are testing whether a particular address works without relying on a server-list entry.
- The server is not visible in a browser but the operator confirms that it is online.
- You want a command you can reuse from chat, a note, or a server announcement.
Method 2: Join through CS2’s Community Server Browser
CS2 includes a community-server browser that lets you add an address, save it, and connect from the resulting entry.
- From the CS2 main menu, click Play.
- Select Community Server Browser.
- If CS2 displays a confirmation dialog, accept it to open the browser.
- Click the + button to add a server.
- Enter the complete
IP:PORTaddress. - Confirm the entry, select the server in the list, and click Connect.
Use the browser’s Favorites function when you expect to return. Saving the address means you can select it later instead of retyping the IP and port. If the entry is missing after you add it, refresh the list and check that the address was entered exactly as supplied.

What the browser is useful for
- Saved access: Favorites keep a known address available for repeat visits.
- List controls: refresh controls can update whether a server is currently listed.
- Visual confirmation: the server appears as an entry that you can select before connecting.
- Less command-line work: you do not need to remember console syntax once the address is saved.
The browser does not repair an incorrect address. If the operator supplied a wrong port or the server is offline, refreshing the list will not make that endpoint reachable.
Method 3: Add the server in Steam’s Game Servers window
You can also add a CS2 server from the Steam client. This is useful when you want the address stored in Steam’s Favorites rather than only in the in-game browser.

- Open the Steam client.
- Click View in the top-left menu.
- Choose Game Servers.
- Switch to the Favorites tab.
- Click the + button at the bottom of the window.
- Enter the server’s complete IP and port.
- Click OK.
- Click Refresh so Steam queries the saved entry.
- Double-click the server in the list to connect.
Keep the Steam client open while the connection begins. If the server does not appear after refreshing, remove and re-add the entry after checking every character in the address, especially the port.
Console versus browser: which route should you use?

Neither route is inherently a faster network connection. They are different ways to submit the same server address. Choose the console for directness and the browser for saved entries and visible refresh controls.
Using a steam://connect link
Some server-list pages provide a link that starts with steam://connect/. With Steam already running, clicking it can hand the address to Steam and start the connection flow.
- Start Steam before clicking the link.
- Approve the browser’s request to open Steam if your browser displays one.
- Wait for Steam and CS2 to process the handoff.
- If nothing happens, copy the server’s complete IP and port and use the console or browser method instead.
A protocol link is only a shortcut. It does not validate that the server is online, and it depends on the browser-to-Steam handoff working correctly. Verify the address before troubleshooting the link itself.

Troubleshooting CS2 connection problems
Work through the branch that matches what you see. Start with the address because a missing port or a single mistyped character prevents every connection method from working.

- Open Settings > Game and set Enable Developer Console to Yes.
- Press the configured console key again. The common key is
~, but keyboard layouts vary. - If you changed key bindings, use the key currently assigned to the console rather than assuming the default.
- Use the Community Server Browser or Steam Game Servers as a temporary alternative while you correct the binding.
CS2 says it cannot connect immediately
- Re-copy the address from the operator or listing instead of typing it manually.
- Confirm that the value contains both an IP and a port in
IP:PORTform. - Check that there are no quotation marks, extra spaces, or line-break characters in the console command.
- Try the other route: paste the same address into the browser, or issue the console command if the browser failed.
- Ask the operator whether the server is currently online and whether its address or port has changed.
There is no single universal fix for every network, firewall, or server-side failure. If the exact address is correct and both routes fail, the operator needs to confirm the server’s status and access requirements.
The server does not appear in Favorites or after a refresh
- Open the saved entry and compare it character by character with the supplied address.
- Make sure the port was entered after the colon; an IP without a port is not a complete CS2 direct-connect address.
- Click Refresh in Steam’s Game Servers window, or refresh the CS2 Community Server Browser.
- Remove a malformed favorite and add it again with the verified address.
- Use the console command to test the endpoint directly.
A server can be reachable by direct address without appearing in a public list, so absence from the browser is not conclusive proof that it is offline.
The connection stalls, times out, or disconnects
- Confirm with the operator that the server is running and accepting players.
- Try again with the exact address copied fresh from the listing.
- Switch between the console and browser methods to rule out a failed menu or protocol handoff.
- Check whether the server has a current password or other access requirement.
- If other servers work but this one does not, report the failed address and the time of the attempt to the operator; the problem may be on that server’s side.
Repeatedly retrying an old address or password cannot resolve a server that has moved, shut down, or changed its access settings.

A password prompt appears
That prompt normally means the server is private or protected. Obtain the current password from the server operator or community announcement and enter it when CS2 asks. If the supplied password fails, request a new one rather than changing the address at random.

The Steam link does nothing
- Confirm that Steam is already open.
- Approve the browser’s request to open the Steam protocol.
- Copy the underlying address and run
connect IP:PORTin CS2’s console. - Alternatively, add the address through View > Game Servers > Favorites > +.
This separates a protocol-handoff problem from a server-availability problem. If the pasted address also fails, investigate the address, server status, or password.
A reliable repeat-visit workflow
For a community you visit regularly, use one direct test and then save the working endpoint.
- Obtain the current address and password information from the operator.
- Test the endpoint once with the console command so you know the syntax and port are correct.
- Open CS2’s Community Server Browser or Steam’s Game Servers window.
- Add the same
IP:PORTvalue to Favorites. - On later visits, refresh Favorites, select the saved entry, and connect.
- If the favorite stops working, compare it with the operator’s latest announcement before deleting or recreating it.
This workflow keeps a convenient saved entry while preserving the console as a direct diagnostic path when the listing or protocol link misbehaves.
Address and password safety
Only use server addresses and passwords supplied by a source you trust. Treat a password as private access information, and do not publish it in a public chat unless the operator explicitly intends it to be public. If an unfamiliar server asks for information unrelated to joining the game, stop and verify the request with its operator.
When sharing a connection instruction with another player, include the entire address in code formatting, such as 144.48.106.196:27035, so the port is not accidentally omitted. If the endpoint changes, distribute the new complete value rather than telling players to modify only part of an old address.
