Because Hytale is in Early Access, the available categories and technical interfaces can change between builds. The current documentation label is Release 0.7.2, while Update 2 is an important checkpoint for world-generation templates and avatar controls.

What you can customize in Hytale
Hytale has two distinct kinds of customization. Player-facing editing changes the character or the world you are currently playing in. Creator-facing editing changes the definitions that generate worlds, biomes or instances and therefore requires more access and more care.

- Character appearance: Avatar Creator controls clothing, cosmetics, color choices and the visibility of equipped armor. More hand and eyelash options are being added during Early Access.
- Terrain and builds: Creative Mode provides scripted brushes, paintbrushes and a Selection Tool for large terrain passes, detailed shaping and reusable prefabs.
- World generation: The Node Editor edits biome assets, while an instance configuration chooses the generator, structure and spawn information used when a world is created.
- Provider settings: The instance reference includes HytaleGenerator, Flat and Void providers, with an optional seed override for HytaleGenerator.
These layers are related but not interchangeable. A brush can reshape terrain in a live world; it does not replace a biome asset. Editing a biome asset does not automatically make it visitable until an instance points to the generator or structure that uses it.
Customize your character in Avatar Creator
1. Open the Avatar Creator
Start with the Avatar Creator rather than trying to change appearance through Creative Mode. Hytale describes the system as freeform customization that lets players dress characters in styles ranging from modern clothing to rugged adventuring gear. The item range is intended to keep expanding throughout Early Access.

2. Build the look you want
Work through the categories available in your current build. The practical choices include clothing, cosmetic items, color selections and equipment presentation. Since the catalog is still changing, do not rely on a fixed online list of supposedly complete options; a category or item shown in one build may be renamed, moved or expanded in another.
3. Control armor visibility
Update 2 added visibility toggles beside equipped armor slots. These let you keep armor equipped while choosing whether its appearance is shown on the avatar. This is useful when you want the protection or loadout of armor without covering a carefully assembled cosmetic outfit. The toggle affects presentation, not the underlying fact that the item is equipped.
4. Use color-name tooltips
Update 2 also added color-name tooltips in Avatar Customization. When several swatches look similar, hover or focus the color control to identify the named choice instead of guessing from the visual preview. This is especially helpful when recreating a look across characters or after changing a garment.
5. Watch for new hand and eyelash controls
The July 2026 update said that more detailed hand and eyelash options were being added. Treat these as build-sensitive features: if the controls are absent, confirm that the game has updated and check the notes for your installed version before assuming the feature was removed or misplaced.
Why a fixed cosmetic catalog is unreliable
Hytale’s own product information promises a continuously expanding range of avatar items, and the Early Access roadmap covers continuing avatar work. The reliable method is to inspect the Avatar Creator in the build you are actually running, then use the current patch notes to explain differences between screenshots, guides and your interface.
Build and reshape terrain in Creative Mode
Creative Mode is the practical route for changing terrain during play. It gives you immediate visual feedback and lets you combine broad procedural passes with precise manual edits.

Scripted Brushes for fast large-scale forms
Scripted Brushes are asset-defined tools that can be dragged into your inventory. Documented examples include brushes for mountains, grassy paths and procedurally generated ruins. They are suited to blocking out a landscape quickly or repeating a particular kind of formation without placing every block yourself.
Paintbrush for controlled shapes
The Paintbrush can draw geometric forms such as pyramids, cones and squares, along with other shapes exposed by the current asset. Its controls include:
- Material: chooses the block or surface material used by the stroke.
- Density: controls how densely the brush fills the affected area.
- Wall thickness: sets the thickness of hollow or bounded forms where the brush supports it.
- Masks: restrict or filter where the operation is applied.
- Axis locks: constrain movement or drawing to selected axes for aligned construction.
Use the Paintbrush after a broad scripted pass when the terrain needs a deliberate silhouette, a hollow structure or a consistent material transition.
Selection Tool for structures and repeatable edits
The Selection Tool handles three-dimensional selections and the operations that make a build reusable. It supports saving a selection as a prefab, copying and pasting, moving and rotating objects, and regenerating chunks. A prefab is valuable when a ruin, building section or terrain feature must appear in several places with consistent proportions.

Choose the right Creative Mode tool

The useful trade-off is speed versus control. Brushes and prefabs cover large areas quickly; manual placement takes longer but is better for fine details and one-block corrections. Creative Mode is also different from technical authoring: it changes the world in front of you, while the Node Editor and asset files change reusable generation definitions.
A practical Creative Mode workflow
- Enter Creative Mode and create a backup or duplicate of the world before a major terrain pass.
- Use a Scripted Brush to establish the broad landform, path or ruin distribution.
- Switch to the Paintbrush to correct the silhouette, materials, density or wall thickness.
- Apply masks and axis locks when the brush starts affecting neighboring areas or drifting off alignment.
- Select finished structures with the Selection Tool, save useful selections as prefabs, then paste and rotate them where needed.
- Regenerate affected chunks only after checking the selection and keeping a recoverable copy of the world.
Change world generation with assets and Instance.bson
Technical world customization is separate from ordinary building. The official world-generation tutorial requires the operator to be in Creative mode, and the instance configuration determines which generator and world settings are used. Operator access and the correct mode are prerequisites, not optional conveniences.

Back up before editing technical files
Copy the relevant world or instance configuration before changing it. A malformed asset or an incorrect generator reference can prevent the intended world from loading, and a backup is the simplest way to return to a known-working configuration. Keep the original file unchanged and make edits in a duplicate.
What Instance.bson does
An Instance.bson file selects the generator and other world settings for an instance. The documented example uses a HytaleGenerator type, identifies a WorldStructure, and includes a spawn transform. The exact keys in your installed templates should be treated as authoritative; copy the structure of a working instance rather than inventing field names.
An important consequence follows: a generation asset by itself is not necessarily visitable. The instance must point to the generator or structure that uses it. If the world opens with a different landscape than expected, check the instance reference before rewriting the biome.

Update 2 prepared Default_Flat and Default_Void templates. Starting from those templates is safer than deleting unrelated settings from a working instance. For a custom structure test, duplicate the basic instance configuration and change the WorldStructure key to the structure you want to load.
Use SeedOverride deliberately
SeedOverride is optional for the HytaleGenerator provider. Set it when you need repeatable generation while testing a change; leave it out when the normal instance seed behavior is preferable. Record the value you test with so that a later comparison uses the same generated conditions.
Edit biomes in the Node Editor
Open the editor
- Enter the game in the required Creative mode and make sure you have operator access for the tutorial workflow.
- Press B to open the in-game Content Creation menu.
- Choose the Node Editor.
- Navigate to the Biomes directory and open the biome asset you want to inspect or modify.
The Node Editor is the authoring route for biome definitions; it is not the same as selecting a brush in a live world.

Understand biome scope
Each biome is largely self-contained and controls what appears within it. Base Heights is the documented exception, so a change that appears to be a biome issue may instead come from the base-height definition or from the generator and instance that place the biome.
Test a biome change safely
- Duplicate the biome or working asset before editing.
- Change one logical group of nodes at a time so you can identify which edit affected the result.
- Save the asset and test it through an instance that explicitly points to the relevant generator or structure.
- If the result is unchanged, verify the instance reference, generator type and world seed before assuming the biome nodes failed.
- Restore the duplicate when a change produces an unusable result.

Use this division to avoid chasing the wrong setting. If the question is “How do I look different?”, start with Avatar Creator. If it is “How do I sculpt this valley now?”, use Creative Mode. If it is “Why does every new world use the wrong biome or structure?”, inspect the Node Editor asset and the instance configuration together.

Release 0.7.2 documentation label
The current documentation identifies itself as Release 0.7.2. When a menu, template or field in an older tutorial does not match your game, compare the tutorial’s version with the release label shown in the current documentation.
Update 2 changes
Update 2 added or prepared several relevant features: armor-slot visibility toggles, avatar color-name tooltips, WorldGen V2 preparation, and the Default_Flat and Default_Void templates. It is a dated checkpoint rather than a promise that every later build has identical labels or locations.
Early Access means the interface will move
Avatar, world-generation and creator systems are still being expanded. Check the current build and patch notes before assuming that an option exists in every mode or that a documented control has the same name. In particular, the biome workflow explicitly requires Creative mode and operator access; ordinary play does not expose every technical control.
Troubleshooting common customization failures
The armor is equipped but not visible
Check the visibility toggle beside the armor slot in Avatar Customization. Update 2 introduced these controls, so a guide written before that update may not mention them.

A color is difficult to identify
Use the color-name tooltip added in Update 2 instead of relying only on the swatch preview.

A brush does not appear in the inventory
Confirm that you are using Creative Mode and that the brush asset was dragged into the inventory as described for Scripted Brushes. A normal survival-style session does not provide the same creation workflow.
The biome edit has no visible effect
Check three links in order: the saved biome asset, the generator that uses it, and the Instance.bson configuration that selects that generator or structure. Generation assets alone are not necessarily visitable.
The world loads the wrong structure
Open the duplicated instance configuration and verify the WorldStructure key. The documented test method is to duplicate the basic instance and change that key, rather than rebuilding the entire configuration.
The Node Editor or biome workflow is unavailable
Verify operator status and Creative mode first, then open the Content Creation menu with B. The official tutorial does not describe this as an unrestricted option available in every mode.

Future creator support and rewards
Hytale has described a future Mod Browser ecosystem in which players may be able to support mods directly and receive official cosmetics, helping creators earn income. The same update says more details are forthcoming. This is a planned creator-support path, not a live affiliate program, guaranteed payout or currently established reward schedule.
A reliable customization routine
- Identify whether the goal is avatar appearance, live-world construction or reusable world generation.
- Check the current build and documentation label before following version-specific directions.
- Back up the world, biome asset or instance configuration you are about to change.
- Use Avatar Creator for appearance, Creative Mode tools for terrain and prefabs, and the Node Editor plus
Instance.bsonfor technical generation work. - Test one change at a time and confirm that the instance actually references the asset you edited.
- Keep a record of the provider,
WorldStructureand anySeedOverrideused for repeatable testing.
That separation keeps routine building quick while preserving the deeper control available to creators and server operators.
