The complete joining procedure
- Press K to open the Terminal.
- Open the Factions tab.
- Check your current status. You cannot join a different faction while you are still a member of another one, so leave your existing faction first if necessary.
- Select the faction you want to join from the list.
- Click Join to submit your application.
- Contact the faction through chat if the group expects applicants to introduce themselves, then wait for a leader or founder to accept the request.
The final step is important: clicking Join does not complete membership immediately. It creates a request that must be approved.

What you need to do before applying
Leave your current faction
The official faction instructions require you to leave your current faction before joining another. If the Join control is unavailable, or an application does not proceed, verify that your character is not already listed as a member elsewhere. Leaving is also required before you can create your own faction.
Choose the correct multiplayer group
Factions are a multiplayer organization system for cooperative groups. The list may contain several groups with different rules, acceptance policies and diplomatic relationships. Read the faction name and any available description carefully before sending an application, particularly on a server where membership affects access to shared ships, bases or other grids.

Know that approval is required
Joining is not an automatic self-service action. The documented rule is that players may ask to join any faction, but a leader or founder must accept the request before the player becomes a member. Plan for a waiting period if the faction’s leadership is offline.
Opening the Factions menu
Keyboard path
Use the documented keyboard workflow: press K, then select the Factions tab. The Factions screen is where the game exposes the player-faction system, including existing groups and the controls for joining or creating one.

The cited official documentation establishes the keyboard path for the PC interface. It does not establish exact controller mappings for console platforms. If you are playing with a controller, use the platform’s equivalent command for opening the Terminal and then look for the Factions tab; do not assume a particular button combination from the keyboard instructions.
Selecting a faction and sending the request
Read the group’s expectations first
Faction choice is a social and access decision rather than a universal ranking exercise. Before applying, consider whether the group accepts new players, how it handles shared blocks and grids, how much authority leaders retain, and whether its diplomatic stance suits the way you intend to play.
Submit one clear application
With the target faction highlighted, choose Join. This submits your request to that faction’s leadership. If the group uses chat for recruitment, send a short message identifying your player and explaining why you want to participate. Chat contact is not a replacement for the Join command; the application still has to be sent from the Factions screen.
Do not treat the button as confirmation
A successful click means that an application has been submitted, not that your status has changed to member. Until a leader or founder confirms the request, you remain outside the faction and should not assume that faction permissions apply to you.

Why you are still not in the faction after clicking Join
Your request is waiting for approval
The most common explanation is that the application is pending. Only a faction leader or founder can accept it. Wait for an authorized player to review the request and, when appropriate, use chat to notify the group that you applied.
You are still in another faction
A player must not currently belong to another faction when joining a different one. Reopen the Factions tab, confirm your membership status, leave the old faction, and submit the new application again if needed.
The leadership has not seen the request
Faction acceptance depends on the people running that group. A leader may be offline, may be reviewing applications later, or may require an introduction in chat. These are social steps rather than additional controls in the Join process.
The request was not accepted
Clicking Join does not guarantee approval. If the group declines the application, ask about its recruitment rules or choose another faction whose expectations match your plans. There is no universal faction ranking in the official documentation; the server and each group’s rules determine which option is suitable.

What changes once you are accepted
Acceptance changes your status from applicant to faction member and enables faction-level cooperation. The documented permissions differ by rank.

Members can share access to owned blocks and grids with other faction members. This is the practical reason many players join: a faction can coordinate around common ships, stations and other structures instead of treating every player as a separate group.

Faction-shared blocks and grids
Membership alone does not mean that every object in the world automatically becomes available to every faction player. The documented benefit is access to blocks and grids that are shared with the faction. When a member cannot use a particular ship or station, first check whether that object has actually been shared at the faction level and whether the player is already accepted as a member.
Protection from faction weapons
The official description says a documented member rank is not targeted by faction weapons. This is a faction relationship rule, not a guarantee of safety from every weapon in the game or from players outside the faction. Treat it as protection within the faction’s own weapon-recognition rules.

Leadership authority
Leaders and founders have powers ordinary members do not: they can approve applicants, invite players and kick existing members. If you are waiting for acceptance, need a new player added, or have been removed, the relevant decision belongs to someone with one of those leadership roles.
How faction membership helps with a ship or base
Use faction sharing for cooperative access
The faction system is designed to let members share access to owned blocks and grids. After acceptance, coordinate with the owner or a leader so the relevant ship, station or base is shared with the faction. The documented result is that faction members can interact with those shared objects instead of requiring every player to work independently.
Separate membership from ownership
Becoming a member does not automatically transfer ownership of your personal ship or base. Membership provides the faction relationship through which access can be shared; ownership of the underlying blocks and grids remains a separate consideration. Agree with your group on which assets should be shared before relying on them during cooperative work.
Check access after approval
If another member still cannot interact with a grid after being accepted, verify two conditions: the player is listed as an accepted member, and the grid or its relevant blocks have been shared with the faction. A pending application or an unshared object will not provide the expected access.

Creating your own faction
If no existing group fits, create one from the same menu:
- Press K.
- Open Factions.
- Choose Create.
You must leave any faction you currently belong to before founding another. Creating a faction makes you its founder, giving you the documented leadership controls to invite players, confirm applicants and remove members. Before inviting anyone, decide what access you intend to share and what rules you will use for accepting or removing players.

The official material does not rank factions globally, so choose by practical criteria that you can verify on your server.
Acceptance policy
Ask whether applications are open, who reviews them and whether the group expects a chat introduction. A faction that rarely checks requests may be a poor fit if you need immediate cooperation.
Membership permissions
Confirm what the group actually shares with members. The documented system supports access to faction-shared blocks and grids, but each faction decides which assets it makes available. Clarify whether new members receive access to communal ships, bases or only selected projects.
Shared-grid access
Discuss how the group labels and shares cooperative grids. Knowing who owns a ship and which faction members may interact with it prevents confusion when several players work on the same structure.

Leadership trust
Leaders and founders can approve applications, invite players and kick members. Joining therefore means trusting the people who control membership and faction access. Consider whether the leadership communicates clearly and explains its rules before you apply.
Diplomatic stance
The Factions screen supports declaring war or peace. Ask how the group handles those diplomatic choices before joining, because its stance can shape your multiplayer relationships and the situations in which faction members cooperate or oppose other groups.
Multiplayer context: factions, war and peace
Player factions organize cooperative groups in multiplayer. From the Factions screen, players can found or join factions and declare war or peace. Joining is therefore more than adding a label to your name: it places you inside a group with shared-access rules, leadership decisions and a diplomatic position.
Before accepting an invitation or application approval, make sure you understand whether the faction is operating peacefully, preparing for conflict or maintaining a specific relationship with another group. If your play style depends on avoiding conflict, diplomatic policy should be part of your decision rather than an afterthought.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Factions tab is missing
- Open the Terminal with K and look for the Factions tab rather than a general inventory or control panel.
- If you are using a controller, remember that the documented source specifies the keyboard workflow and does not establish console button mappings.
Join is unavailable or does nothing
- Confirm that you are not still a member of another faction.
- Select the intended faction in the list before using Join.
- After clicking, allow time for a leader or founder to review the application.
You clicked Join but your status did not change
- Check whether the request is awaiting approval; Join submits an application rather than granting instant membership.
- Contact the faction in chat if its leaders need an introduction or notification.
- Wait for an authorized leader or founder to confirm the request.
You were accepted but cannot use a ship or base
- Verify that your application was accepted, not merely submitted.
- Ask the owner or leadership whether the relevant blocks or grid were shared with the faction.
- Remember that membership does not automatically transfer ownership or make every object available.
You want to switch factions
- Leave your current faction.
- Open K > Factions.
- Select the new group and submit Join.
- Wait for its leader or founder to accept the application.
A reliable joining checklist
- You opened the Terminal with K.
- You selected the Factions tab.
- You left any previous faction.
- You selected the intended group.
- You clicked Join.
- You understand that the request is pending until a leader or founder accepts it.
- You contacted the group in chat when appropriate.
- After acceptance, you confirmed which blocks and grids are shared with faction members.
- You reviewed the group’s leadership structure and diplomatic stance.
Following those checks avoids the two most common misunderstandings: assuming that Join grants instant membership and assuming that membership automatically opens every ship or base. The official Factions system requires approval, and cooperative access depends on faction-shared objects.
