Choose a LAMP image when you need a general PHP platform, several applications or sites, or direct control of Apache, PHP, the database and deployment layout. Both options provide a Linux server with the components needed for PHP websites. The difference is where the provider stops: a LAMP image gives you the infrastructure layer, while a WordPress image adds and configures the content-management application for you.
That distinction affects installation time, control, future projects and maintenance. It does not remove the need for updates, backups, access control or performance planning. The sections below separate what each image contains, what you must configure after deployment and which choice fits common projects.

What the two image types actually are
A cloud image is a preconfigured server template. Selecting one creates a virtual machine with an operating system and software that has already been installed and given baseline settings. You still own the resulting server: you choose its size, credentials, domains, data protection and update policy.
LAMP is the application infrastructure
LAMP refers to Linux, Apache, MySQL (or MariaDB) and PHP. It is a neutral runtime rather than a website product. You can install WordPress on it, but you can also deploy another PHP CMS, a framework application, an API or several unrelated sites. The image normally leaves the application structure and much of the web-server configuration to you.

WordPress one-click is an application bundle
A WordPress image combines a Linux/PHP/database stack with WordPress itself and a provider’s preferred web-server settings. The first-login flow is designed to get one WordPress site online quickly. Themes, plugins and WordPress-specific command-line tools are available immediately, but the server is more opinionated about how the application is laid out.
WordPress runs on a LAMP-style runtime, yet the reverse is not true: deploying LAMP does not install or configure WordPress. That single fact explains most of the practical difference between the choices.
What is included in current images
DigitalOcean LAMP 1-Click
DigitalOcean’s current LAMP 1-Click image is based on Ubuntu 24.04. It installs Apache, PHP and MySQL locally by default, with an option to attach a managed MySQL database. The image configures UFW for SSH, HTTP and HTTPS, runs MySQL hardening and includes Certbot for certificate automation. The default web root is /var/www/html. Apache virtual hosts can be added for individual domains, so separate sites can have their own directories and configuration.
These are catalog values and can change. Confirm the image description and package versions in the control panel at the time you create a server, especially if a project requires a particular PHP or database release.
DigitalOcean WordPress 1-Click
The current DigitalOcean catalog lists Ubuntu 24.04, PHP 8.3 running through PHP-FPM, MySQL 8.0, Caddy, WordPress 7.1.2, WP-CLI and a firewall. Its documented first-login flow creates the WordPress administrator account, and HTTPS is enabled automatically during that initial setup. Treat the listed versions as time-sensitive catalog values rather than permanent guarantees.

AWS Lightsail blueprints
AWS Lightsail documents a preconfigured WordPress blueprint and a separate LAMP blueprint. Its LAMP option includes PHP, Apache, MariaDB, phpMyAdmin and Composer. Lightsail also documents a Bitnami LAMP package with ready-to-run Apache, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin. The exact components depend on the blueprint you select, so read the image description before deployment instead of assuming that every LAMP template is identical.

How deployment differs in practice
Deploying a LAMP image
- Create the server and select the LAMP image. Choose the Ubuntu-based image and a size appropriate for the expected traffic, application and database workload.
- Confirm the database arrangement. The DigitalOcean image uses local MySQL by default; select a managed MySQL service if you want the database lifecycle separated from the web server.
- Connect securely. Use the provider’s documented SSH method, retain key-based access where possible and verify that UFW rules allow only the services you intend to expose.
- Prepare the application. Upload or deploy the PHP code, create its database and database user, import the schema and set environment or configuration values. The image does not perform these application-specific tasks.
- Map domains with Apache virtual hosts. Give each site its own document root and host configuration. The default path is
/var/www/html; additional sites can use separate directories. - Enable HTTPS. Use the included Certbot workflow for each public domain, then verify renewal and redirect behavior. A certificate is not a substitute for keeping the application and server patched.
- Test before opening the site. Check PHP error handling, database connectivity, file permissions, scheduled jobs, uploads, redirects and rollback or restore procedures.
This route takes longer because every application has different requirements. The time is exchanged for a layout you understand and can adapt to several projects.

- Create the server from the WordPress image or blueprint. Record the image date and listed component versions for future troubleshooting.
- Complete the first-login wizard. On DigitalOcean, the documented flow creates the administrator account and enables HTTPS automatically during first login. Follow the provider’s current prompts rather than reusing credentials from another site.
- Point the domain and verify TLS. Update DNS as instructed by the provider, then confirm that both the certificate and HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior work for the final hostname.
- Harden the WordPress installation. Remove unused themes and plugins, create separate administrator and editorial accounts, require strong authentication and restrict administrative access where your operating plan allows.
- Set an update and backup schedule. Test a restore before the site becomes important. One-click provisioning does not create a complete disaster-recovery plan.
The wizard eliminates package installation and much of the initial configuration, but it cannot know your editorial workflow, plugin choices, retention requirements or compliance obligations.
Is one-click WordPress faster than installing WordPress on LAMP?
It is usually faster to reach a first working WordPress login because the CMS, PHP runtime, database and web-server defaults are bundled. You avoid separately creating a database, configuring a virtual host and wiring the initial application settings. That is a setup-time advantage, not a promise that pages will render faster for visitors.
After installation, performance depends on the server size, PHP-FPM or Apache configuration, database workload, theme and plugin code, caching, media delivery and traffic pattern. A carefully tuned LAMP deployment can perform as well as or better than an untouched one-click image, while a poorly maintained installation can be slow regardless of its starting template. Choose one-click for reduced configuration work, not as a benchmark result.

Which option gives you more control?
LAMP gives you the broader control surface. You decide how Apache virtual hosts are organized, which modules are enabled, how PHP is configured, where databases live, how deployments are released and whether multiple applications share a machine. That flexibility is valuable for framework applications, APIs, staging environments and sites that need nonstandard extensions.

A WordPress image trades some of that freedom for useful defaults. Its web server, PHP-FPM arrangement, database version and WordPress directory layout are selected to support the bundled CMS. You can still inspect and change server settings, but changes may diverge from the documented image path and make later troubleshooting or migrations harder. If you expect to replace WordPress with another application, add several unrelated sites or use unusual Apache modules, start with LAMP.
Can you run other PHP applications on a WordPress image?
Technically, a WordPress image is still a Linux server with PHP and a database, so an administrator can install additional software. The practical question is whether the image’s Caddy, PHP-FPM, firewall and directory conventions suit that software. You would need to create separate virtual hosts or site routes, isolate files and database credentials, check PHP-version compatibility and prevent one application’s updates from breaking another.
Adding a second application also turns a simple WordPress host into a custom server that you must document and maintain. If the additional application is central to the project, deploying a neutral LAMP image and installing WordPress as one application usually produces a clearer ownership boundary. Keep a WordPress image focused on WordPress unless the extra workload is small, well understood and tested in a separate environment.
Maintenance and security responsibilities
Neither image is maintenance-free. A provider’s template establishes a starting state; it does not assume responsibility for every package and setting after deployment.

- Operating system: apply Ubuntu security updates and reboot when required.
- Web server and PHP: track Apache or Caddy changes, PHP security releases and compatibility with your application.
- Database: patch MySQL or MariaDB, restrict network exposure and verify that backups can be restored.
- WordPress sites: update WordPress core, themes and plugins, remove abandoned components and test updates before production when the site is important.
- Access: protect SSH keys, minimize privileged accounts, review firewall rules and separate application credentials.
- Data protection: keep versioned backups of the database, uploaded media, configuration and secrets in a location independent of the server.
- Observability: monitor disk space, memory, certificate expiry, failed logins, error logs and database health.
The LAMP image makes more of these choices explicit because you configure the application yourself. The WordPress image hides more of the initial work, so keep an inventory of the versions and defaults it installed.
When AWS Lightsail integrations change the decision
Lightsail is a stronger fit when a WordPress project is expected to use adjacent AWS services. AWS documents paths for managed MySQL, Aurora, S3 media offload and a content-delivery network for Lightsail WordPress. Moving the database or media away from the instance can reduce the amount of state tied to one server and provide a clearer scaling path, although each service adds configuration, permissions and separate costs.
Select the Lightsail WordPress blueprint when that integration path and a WordPress-first workflow are the priority. Select the Lightsail LAMP blueprint when you need its PHP, Apache, MariaDB, phpMyAdmin and Composer foundation for an application you will assemble yourself. Do not choose solely because a blueprint lists an extra tool; confirm that the tool’s version and operational model match your deployment standards.

Single brochure, magazine or blog site

Choose LAMP. Apache virtual hosts and separate document roots give you a deliberate way to isolate domains, databases and deployment schedules. A WordPress image can be extended, but its application-focused defaults do not remove the work of multi-site isolation.

Custom PHP framework or API
Choose LAMP. You can select the framework’s required PHP extensions, define the database layout and establish deployment conventions without first undoing WordPress-specific assumptions.
Prototype that may become a WordPress site
Choose WordPress one-click when proving the editorial experience is the main goal. Choose LAMP instead if the prototype is evaluating several application architectures or may become a mixed hosting environment.
WordPress with AWS-managed services
Choose the Lightsail WordPress blueprint when managed database, object-storage media or CDN integration is part of the design. Keep the data-flow and permission model documented before moving production content.

Moving from one image type to the other is possible because both ultimately host PHP and a database, but the configuration is not identical. A WordPress migration must include the database, uploads, configuration secrets, domain and HTTPS behavior, plus any web-server rewrites. Moving from LAMP to a WordPress image may simplify a single-site setup; moving from WordPress to LAMP may make a mixed application server easier to manage.
Before committing, record the PHP version, database engine and version, web server, document root, scheduled tasks, extensions, firewall rules and backup locations. That inventory prevents an image change from becoming a mystery migration and exposes incompatibilities before DNS is moved.
Pre-launch checklist
- Confirm that the image’s operating-system, PHP, database and WordPress versions meet your application’s requirements.
- Decide whether the database should remain local or use a managed service.
- Assign domains, document roots and virtual hosts before publishing content.
- Verify SSH access, firewall rules, least-privilege accounts and administrative authentication.
- Issue and test HTTPS certificates, redirects and renewal.
- Install only the themes, plugins, extensions and packages you can maintain.
- Automate or schedule backups for both database and files, then perform a restore test.
- Set monitoring for storage, memory, errors, certificate expiry and failed authentication.
- Write down the image version and every post-deploy change.
Bottom line
WordPress one-click is the practical default for one WordPress-first project when guided setup matters most. LAMP is the better foundation for custom PHP, multiple applications, multiple domains or teams that need to control the server layout and lifecycle. In either case, the image only determines your starting point: secure access, updates, backups, testing and capacity planning remain your responsibility.
