The quickest way to join a Hytale game is through a friend’s shared single-player world: become Hytale friends, have the host enable Online Play, and paste the generated code under Servers > Join via Code. You do not need a dedicated server for a small group. Use a dedicated server when the world must stay online without its owner, support a larger community, or provide additional configuration.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Hytale servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Choose the connection method that fits your group
Hytale has four practical ways to play together. The right choice depends on how many people need access, whether the owner can stay online, and how much networking work you are willing to do.

| Option | Best for | Setup burden | Availability | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friend share code | A few friends joining an existing single-player world | Low | The host must be online with the world loaded | The host’s network and game session determine whether others can connect |
| Tailscale fallback | CGNAT, double NAT, or a blocked direct path | Medium | Both players must install and sign in to the app | An overlay or relay path can add latency |
| Rented dedicated server | A persistent community world, larger groups, or play while the owner is offline | Low to medium | Depends on the provider and its service status | Recurring hosting cost and provider terms |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | Technical owners who need control and customization | High | Depends on your hardware, power, and internet connection | You manage Java, authentication, updates, firewall rules, and ports |
For a normal get-together, start with the built-in share-code method. It is the path Hytale provides for opening a single-player world without installing a separate server. Move to Tailscale only when direct joining is blocked. Choose a dedicated server when persistence, uptime, or administration matters more than the lowest setup effort.
Before anyone connects
Become Hytale friends first
Add every player as a Hytale friend before trying to share a world. Friend status is required for the normal share flow and enables additional connection methods, including Hytale’s relay fallback when a direct route is unavailable.

Decide who will host
The host is the player whose computer runs the world. That person must keep Hytale open and remain in the world while friends play. If one player’s network repeatedly fails, another friend can host instead; changing the host is often faster than trying to repair a restrictive connection.
Keep the code private
A share code contains the host’s IP address. Send it directly to trusted players; do not post it in a public chat, place it in a public community channel, or show it on a stream. Codes expire, so generate a new one whenever an old code stops working or has been exposed.
How the host shares a Hytale world
- Add the guest as a Hytale friend. Confirm that the guest appears in the host’s friends list before opening the world.
- Load the single-player world. The share controls are available after the world has loaded.
- Press Esc. This opens the pause menu.
- Select Online Play. This is the world’s multiplayer access screen.
- Turn on Allow Other Players to Join. The world remains private until this setting is enabled.
- Set a password if you want one. Hytale lets you choose whether the password is included in the share code. If it is not included, give the password to the guest through a private channel.
- Click Save. Hytale applies the online-play settings and creates the connection information.
- Click Copy to Clipboard next to the share code. Send the copied code privately to the intended players only.
Hytale chooses a route automatically. It prefers a direct connection and uses a relay when a direct path cannot be established. Most home networks require no router changes for this flow; the Online Play status and Network Report tell you when the host’s network needs attention.
How the guest joins with a share code
- Open Hytale’s main menu.
- Select Servers.
- Choose Join via Code.
- Paste the complete share code. Do not remove characters or add spaces.
- Enter the password if it was not embedded in the code.
- Click Connect.
If the code is valid and the host is still online, Hytale negotiates the best available route. A code is not a permanent server address: it expires, and it represents the host’s current connection details. Ask the host for a newly generated code rather than repeatedly retrying an old one.
What share codes do—and their limits
Direct path first, relay when necessary
Hytale attempts a direct path between the two players. If NAT or firewall conditions prevent that route, the game can use a relay. Relay use is automatic; players do not need to select a separate relay server.
Connection candidates are limited
Hytale’s share-code process caps connection candidates at 16. This is a networking limit on the connection attempt, not a promise that a world can support 16 simultaneous players. For a larger or regularly occupied community, use a dedicated server instead of treating a friend world as a permanent public server.

The host controls availability
Friends cannot join while the host’s game is closed, the world is unloaded, or Allow Other Players to Join is disabled. A dedicated server removes that dependency by running the world independently of the owner’s client.
Fix a failed friend-world connection
Work through the checks in this order. The goal is to distinguish an expired code, an account or setting problem, and a network path that Hytale cannot establish.
1. Check the host’s Online Play screen
Return to the host’s world, open Esc > Online Play, and verify that Allow Other Players to Join is still on. Use Copy Network Report on that screen. The report identifies the network condition Hytale sees and is the most useful starting point for a support request or a router diagnosis.
2. Confirm friend status on both accounts
Make sure the host and guest have accepted each other as Hytale friends. A copied code cannot compensate for an incomplete friendship relationship.

3. Regenerate the code
Click Save again in the Online Play screen and copy the newly displayed code. Codes expire, and a code copied before a setting change may no longer represent the active session.
4. Check the Windows Firewall
On Windows, allow Hytale through the firewall on both Private and Public networks. A rule that allows only private networks can fail when Windows has classified the current connection as public. After changing the rule, save Online Play settings again and send a fresh code.

5. Test from a different network
School, office, hotel, and public networks often block peer-to-peer or UDP traffic. Have the affected player try a phone hotspot. If the join works over the hotspot but not on the usual network, the restriction is outside Hytale and must be addressed by that network’s administrator or by using the Tailscale fallback.
6. Try another host
If the original host cannot establish a usable route, have the other player load the world or a copy of it and generate the code. Symmetric NAT and some ISP configurations can prevent one household from hosting even when it can join someone else.
Understand NAT, router, and ISP failures
Double NAT
Double NAT means two routers sit between the computer and the internet, commonly an ISP gateway plus a personal router. If port forwarding is required, the relevant port must be forwarded on both devices. Alternatively, put the provider gateway into bridge or modem mode so that only one router performs NAT. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so record the current configuration before changing it.
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT)
With CGNAT, the ISP shares one public address among multiple homes. Traditional port forwarding cannot create an inbound path through the ISP’s shared address. Ask the ISP for a public IPv4 address if it offers one, or use Tailscale as the overlay fallback.
Symmetric NAT
A symmetric NAT can prevent a direct peer route and force Hytale to use its relay. Relaying may increase ping even when the join succeeds. If the resulting latency is unacceptable, try the other player as host or move the group to a dedicated server.
ISP and institutional filtering
Some providers, workplaces, schools, and public Wi-Fi networks filter gaming traffic. This is not fixed by repeatedly regenerating a code. Test a different connection, ask the network operator whether gaming traffic is permitted, or use Tailscale where policy allows it.

Use Tailscale when direct joining is blocked
Hypixel Studios describes Tailscale as a free app that creates a private connection between computers and works around most router and firewall problems Hytale cannot solve by itself. It is a backup path, not a requirement for ordinary home networks.
- Install Tailscale on both computers. Each player signs in to the app.
- Confirm that both devices appear in the same Tailscale network. Use the app’s device list to verify that each computer is online.
- Have the host reopen the Hytale world. Open Esc > Online Play, confirm the join setting, and click Save again.
- Generate a new share code. Do not reuse the code created before Tailscale was connected.
- Send the new code privately. The guest joins through Servers > Join via Code as usual.
Tailscale can bypass CGNAT, double NAT, and many local firewall obstacles, but the overlay path may be slower than a direct connection. If performance is poor, compare the result with another host or a dedicated server rather than assuming the game world itself is the problem.

Persistent worlds and offline owners
A dedicated server keeps running when the owner closes the game. That makes it suitable for a persistent survival world, a scheduled community, or friends in different time zones.

A dedicated process does not also have to render the owner’s client. Hypixel Studios lists better performance, uptime while the owner is offline, more configuration options, and reliable connectivity without the host’s router problems as key advantages.
Provider-hosted servers
Hypixel Studios’ Launch Verified list names Nitrado, Apex Hosting, GPORTAL, Shockbyte, and Dathost. A provider normally supplies the hardware, network connection, maintenance, and a one-click installation workflow. Plans, regions, player limits, support, and availability change, so check the provider’s current terms before paying.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives you control over the machine, files, updates, and network settings, but you are responsible for every part of the service. It is the most flexible option and the one with the highest administration burden.

Self-host a dedicated server: requirements and network settings
Hardware and software requirements
- Architecture: x64 or arm64 device.
- Memory: at least 4 GB of RAM, according to the 2026 Hytale Server Manual.
- Java: Java 25 is required.
- Authentication: the server must be authenticated before players can use it.
- Transport: Hytale uses QUIC over UDP.
The 4 GB figure is the documented minimum, not a performance guarantee for every world, mod set, or player count. Leave operating-system headroom and monitor the machine once players are active.

Bind address and port
The documented default bind is 0.0.0.0:5520. A router-hosted server should forward UDP 5520 to the server computer’s local address. TCP forwarding is not required for Hytale’s server traffic. If you select another port with the server’s --bind option, forward that custom UDP port instead and give players the matching address and port.
Authentication window
The server manual documents a 900-second authorization window for device authentication. Complete the authentication process within that window; if it expires, restart the authorization attempt rather than troubleshooting player connections first.
What players need to enter
Players connect through the client’s server interface using the server’s current reachable address and port. A private LAN address works only for devices on that network. Friends connecting over the internet need the public address (or the provider’s assigned hostname) and the forwarded UDP port.
Dedicated-server troubleshooting
The server is running but nobody can join
- Confirm the server is authenticated and still running.
- Check that the server is listening on the expected bind address and UDP port.
- Verify the operating-system firewall allows the selected UDP port.
- Confirm the router forwards UDP, not only TCP, to the correct local machine.
- Check whether the ISP uses CGNAT; if so, ordinary inbound forwarding will not work without a public address or an overlay network.
Players can join locally but not from the internet
This usually indicates a public-address, port-forwarding, firewall, or CGNAT problem rather than a Hytale account problem. Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a phone network, because a device inside the same LAN may not support hairpin NAT.

Residential public addresses can change. Give players the new address and port, or use a hosting provider that supplies a stable endpoint. Do not publish a changing residential address in a public channel; treat it as private network information.
Friend world or dedicated server?
| Question | Choose a friend world when… | Choose a dedicated server when… |
|---|---|---|
| How many people? | You are playing with a small, trusted group. | You expect a larger or changing player community. |
| Does the owner need to be online? | Everyone can play during the host’s session. | Players need access while the owner is away. |
| How much administration? | You want almost no server maintenance. | You need configuration, scheduled uptime, or file-level control. |
| What if networking fails? | Try relay, another host, or Tailscale. | Use the provider’s network or administer forwarding and firewall rules yourself. |
| What does it cost? | No separate dedicated-server service is required. | Rented hosting has an ongoing fee; self-hosting has hardware and connectivity costs. |
The practical progression is simple: start with a share code, diagnose the Network Report if it fails, use Tailscale for a blocked direct path, and adopt a dedicated server when the world needs independent uptime or broader administration.
Safe sharing checklist
- Add players as Hytale friends before generating access.
- Enable Allow Other Players to Join only for the session you intend to host.
- Use a password for groups that need an additional gate.
- Send codes privately and never display them on a stream or public screenshot.
- Regenerate a code after changing Online Play settings or after a code has been shared too widely.
- Revoke access by turning off Online Play, changing the password, or closing the world.
Bottom line
For a few friends, Hytale’s built-in share code is the correct first choice: friendship, Online Play, a private code, and Servers > Join via Code are all that is normally required. Network reports, firewall checks, a different host, and Tailscale address the common failures. A dedicated server—rented or self-hosted—is the durable answer for persistent worlds, larger groups, owner-offline access, and advanced configuration.
