Back up or download the current world first, then use the procedure for your hosting model—self-hosted Java, Bedrock Dedicated Server, Java Realm, Bedrock Realm, or a local Bedrock save. A seed can reproduce terrain, but it cannot restore builds, inventories, advancements, or other progress.

Choose the result you actually want
Before changing a file or pressing a reset button, decide whether you need a new world, an old world, or only a regenerated dimension. These operations are not interchangeable.

A reset is destructive when it replaces the only copy of a save. Treat a download or dated server-directory copy as your recovery point, and do not discard it until the replacement has been tested by an operator and a player.
Back up the world before touching it
Dedicated servers
- Tell players the server will be offline and wait for them to leave. Never remove or rename world files while the server is writing to them.
- Use the server console or hosting panel to save and stop the server cleanly. A normal shutdown lets the game finish writing chunks and player data.
- Copy the entire server directory, or at minimum the active world directory, to a dated location outside the live server. Include the date and whether it was taken before a reset.
- Keep the copy unchanged. If the new world has missing chunks, incorrect settings or an accidental overwrite, stop the server and restore this copy rather than trying to reconstruct files.
Third-party control panels use different labels and file managers. Their “reset,” “reinstall” or “new world” buttons may also remove configuration files, so read the provider’s current documentation and verify exactly what the button affects.

Realms and local worlds
Download the current Realm world before replacing or resetting it. Realm backups are not retained indefinitely, so an old automatic backup should not be treated as a permanent archive. For a local Bedrock world, export or copy the save using the platform’s save-file tools before attempting a restore or recreation.
Reset a self-hosted Java Edition server
Java servers identify the active save with the level-name value in server.properties. The value normally matches the world-folder name in the server directory.
Generate a brand-new Java world
- Stop the server cleanly and make a dated backup of the entire server directory.
- Open
server.propertiesand note the exactlevel-name. Do not change it unless you intentionally want the server to use a different folder. - Rename the active world folder, for example by adding
-old-2026-10-14, or move it outside the server directory. Renaming is safer than deleting because it leaves a quarantine copy available for recovery. - Start the server with the original
level-namestill configured. Because that folder is absent, the server generates a new world using the configured world settings. - Join with an operator account and check the spawn area, gamerules, difficulty, permissions, datapacks and version. Confirm that a new player can join before announcing the reset as complete.
- Stop the server again before making any further file changes. Keep the old folder until the new save has passed your checks.
If you want a particular seed, set it before generation. In Java, the seed is normally specified in server.properties with level-seed; leave the setting unchanged only if you want the server’s normal random generation. A seed reproduces terrain-generation inputs, not the old save’s buildings or player data.
Replace the world with an existing Java save
- Stop the server and preserve a dated backup of both the current world and the replacement save.
- Move the current folder out of the server directory or rename it.
- Place the replacement folder in the server directory and rename it to exactly the value of
level-name. Matching capitalization and punctuation matters on case-sensitive systems. - Check that the replacement folder contains the save’s expected files and subdirectories rather than an extra enclosing folder created by an archive program.
- Start the server, verify the world and player data, and watch the console for errors before allowing normal play.
Do not restore only selected files unless you understand the save format and have another backup. Mixing region, dimension and player-data files from different points in time can create missing terrain, duplicated progress or load errors.

Reset a self-hosted Bedrock Dedicated Server
Bedrock Dedicated Server stores active worlds under the server’s worlds/ directory. Microsoft identifies the active folder by the level-name value: that value is the folder name the server loads.
Create a new Bedrock world
- Stop the Bedrock server cleanly and copy the entire server directory, including
worlds/, to a dated backup location. - Open
server.propertiesand recordlevel-name. - Inside
worlds/, rename the folder matchinglevel-nameor move it outside the live server directory. Keep it as your rollback copy. - Start the server. With no folder matching
level-name, Bedrock Dedicated Server creates a new world inworlds/. - Stop and restart once more after checking the new world. Confirm that the generated folder name still matches
level-nameand that the server starts without a world-load error.
Load an existing Bedrock save
- Stop the server and back up the current save.
- Copy the replacement world folder into
worlds/. - Set
level-nameto that folder’s exact name, or rename the folder to match the existing setting. - Start the server and test spawn, inventories and permissions. If anything is wrong, stop it and restore the dated copy.
Bedrock and Java save formats are not interchangeable by simply moving a folder. Use a conversion process appropriate to the edition if you are deliberately moving a world between editions; a normal reset procedure should stay within the same edition.

Roll back a Java Edition Realm
A rollback is the right choice when you want the Realm as it existed at a known time. It is not a fresh-world reset: restoring a save also restores the builds, items and other progress present in that save, while removing changes made afterward.
- Open Minecraft Realms and select the Realm.
- Choose Configure.
- Open World Backups.
- Find the timestamp representing the state you want and select Restore.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then enter the Realm and check several known locations, inventories and recent builds.
Ask players which timestamp contains the desired state before restoring. If you are unsure, download the current world first so that the pre-rollback state remains available as a separate copy.

Start a completely new Java Realm world
Download the current Realm world before using its world-replacement controls. Realm replacement can discard progress, and available backups may eventually expire. After the download, use the Realm’s configuration controls to replace the active world with a new one, select the desired world settings or seed when prompted, and verify the result before inviting players back.
Reset a Bedrock Edition Realm
Bedrock Realms expose the reset actions in the Realm Hub rather than through server files.
- From Play, enter the Realm Hub.
- Open the World tab.
- Select Download World and save the current world if there is any chance you will need its builds or player progress.
- Choose the action that matches your goal: Replace World loads another existing world, while Reset World removes the current world from the Realm’s active slot and replaces it with a brand-new world.
- Confirm the prompt, wait for the operation to complete, and join the Realm to check the generated spawn and settings.
Use Replace World when you already have a prepared save. Use Reset World only when losing the active world’s progress is intentional. A downloaded copy is the practical recovery path if the decision changes later.
Recreate a Bedrock local world from the same seed
Seed recreation is useful when you want the familiar terrain layout but a clean progression. It does not restore construction, inventories, maps, pets, achievements or other state stored in the old save.

- Open the original world and copy its seed from the world settings, or obtain it from a backup of the save. Record the complete value, including a minus sign if present.
- Return to the Bedrock world list and choose Create New World.
- Choose Create New World again to open the detailed creation screen.
- Open Advanced settings and paste the seed into the seed field.
- Match any relevant generation options, such as world type, difficulty or experimental features, then create the world.
- Explore the new spawn and compare a few landmarks. Identical seed values do not guarantee identical results when generation options, edition versions or experimental settings differ.
The same workflow can be used for a new server world: record the seed, configure it before the first generation, and do not copy the old world’s region or player-data files afterward.

Java stores dimension data in separate folders inside the world save. The community maintenance convention identifies DIM-1 as the Nether and DIM1 as the End. Removing one folder causes that dimension to regenerate the next time it is entered, while the overworld and the other dimension remain in the save.
- Stop the server cleanly and make a complete, verified backup of the world.
- Confirm that the folder is the Java save used by
level-name, not an old quarantine copy. - Rename the dimension folder rather than deleting it: rename
DIM-1for a Nether reset orDIM1for an End reset. Add a date so it cannot be confused with the active folder. - Start the server and enter the affected dimension. The game generates fresh dimension terrain.
- Check portals, farms and transport routes. Structures and player builds inside the removed dimension are gone from the active world, so warn players before performing this operation.
This procedure is for Java save maintenance. Do not apply these folder names to a Bedrock world, and do not remove a dimension folder while the server is running.
Fresh world, seed recreation or rollback: a decision guide

Common failure modes and recovery
The server creates another new world every time
Check that the folder name and level-name match exactly and that the folder is in the correct location. On Bedrock Dedicated Server, the folder must be under worlds/. Look for an accidental nested path such as worlds/MyWorld/MyWorld/, then stop the server before correcting it.

The old world appears after a reset
The server may still be pointing at the original folder, or a control panel may have restored it automatically. Stop the server, inspect server.properties, and verify which folder’s modification time changes when the server starts. Do not delete the backup while diagnosing the path.
The world loads but builds or inventories are missing
This usually means a fresh world or an older backup was loaded rather than the intended current save. Stop the server, preserve the mistaken state as a separate copy if needed, and restore the verified backup whose timestamp contains the missing progress.
A Realm reset cannot be undone
Check whether you downloaded the world before resetting and whether an appropriate Realm backup still appears in the backup list. Backups are not permanent; if neither a download nor a suitable backup exists, the removed progress may not be recoverable.
A dimension reset causes missing portals or farms
Anything built in the removed Java dimension belongs to that dimension’s data and will not return after regeneration. Restore the pre-reset backup if those builds matter. If only the Nether was reset, overworld and End data should come from the same original save.
Players remain connected during maintenance
Stop the server and confirm its process has actually exited before renaming or copying files. A panel showing “stopping” is not proof that all file handles are closed. Starting the server again before the copy is complete can produce a partial backup.

- The server or Realm starts without world-load errors.
- The expected seed, edition and generation settings are in effect.
- Spawn coordinates and a few distant chunks generate normally.
- Operator permissions, whitelist settings, difficulty and gamerules are correct.
- For a rollback, a known build and player inventory match the chosen timestamp.
- For a same-seed world, old builds and inventories are absent by design, while terrain landmarks are comparable.
- For a dimension reset, portals connect correctly and the untouched dimensions still contain their original builds.
- A dated backup or downloaded world remains outside the active save and can be identified without guesswork.
Once these checks pass, tell players precisely what changed: a new world, a restored timestamp, a same-seed recreation or a single-dimension regeneration. That distinction prevents players from assuming that a familiar seed means their old progress still exists.
